WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to 2021! I had a great Christmas and time with the family, we went camping and spent time at the beach. We are ready to SOAR to success together. I will start the newsletter with my goal-

“My personal goal is to create a school culture where students enjoy coming to school, engage in the learning process and set themselves up as successful young people ready to thrive at High School; developing character through curriculum learning”

A huge welcome to our new 100 Prep students and families. I saw the tears, nerves and excitement on your faces on Day 1. Throughout the first week, I saw every student and every class engaged and learning. Well done to families and teachers for being partners in learning. We value the parents commitment to school success and trust in the school process. WELL DONE. Below picture is of ELSS students on the journey to be engaged, inspired and empowered.

Introduction-

Our wonderful junior Deputy Principal, Ms Grant, is current on family leave. We are pleased to appoint Wendy Williams in the position whilst Ms Grant is away. Many parents know Mrs Williams as she has been our Guidance Officer for 2 years.

We have 3 new staff at ELSS, warm welcome to-

Kristy-Lee Hill- Our new Business Manager.
Steven Zhang- Our new computer technician.
Andrea Munro- Our new Guidance Officer.

Let’s Celebrate-

New shade sails, concrete play markings, new equipment, removed old buildings and the countdown to our $300,000 brand new fully inclusive Senior Playground.

Our 4 specialist areas across the school for student success are; Health and Physical Education, Technologies, ARTS and Japanese.

Reminder-

Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety. To support this we have a wonderful before and after school care provider onsite YMCA.

Stop Drop and Go area at the start of each year in EVERY school requires patience and understanding. New families learning the system, students learning our processes and lots of traffic. Stop Drop and Go is designed for quick movement of students. No parents or drivers to get out of the vehicle. If you need to do this then the Stop Drop and Go area is not for you. Outside the school gates is council land supported by Queensland Police. The carpark is council operated and it’s not within our operations. They are well aware of the communities concerns with the area however their plan is to educate parents and students about other modes of transport to school. We have various bike racks that the community can use.

The ELSS P&C is a great opportunity to further being a partner in learning. I hope to see many of you at the next meeting. We are looking executives but also families to attend and work together. A huge thanks to the 2020 P&C team, throughout a difficult year we communicated and worked together for support. Volunteers are the backbone of our P&C. We would love to see some new faces in 2021.

2021

Our three school wide expectations are:

At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER.

Our school motto and expectations link closely, students can SOAR to success daily-

S- Safe

O- On time and on task

A -Attitude and effort

R- Respect

Families can help this through our STEPS to success at school: Had sleep – Breakfast - Healthy food - On time - In uniform - Ready to learn.

At ELSS we have an attendance policy that aligns with Education Queensland’s state-wide initiative ‘Every Day Counts’. We are committed to ensuring a 95% attendance rate for all students.

Operations-

Please see the current Week 3 ELSS COVID safe guidelines. If you have a question or concern please reach out. This email was sent on Wednesday 3 February or see below attachement.

School uniform policy- White socks and Black Shoes. Please support this with your next purchase of socks and shoes to align with the school uniform policy. There are actually no changes from the 2018 policy however, I will be encouraging families/students to meet with guidelines. Part of the reason for high expectation in student uniform is- Safety, cost, confidence, school spirit, saves time, reduce distraction, encourages discipline and high school ready.

Message-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

I love our school! We have so much to be thankful for. All staff are fully committed to creating opportunities for your children to succeed. We can celebrate our diverse community, students and staff. We are a great school when everyone works together to make it great.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning families to another wonderful year at Edens landing State School. I hope you all had a fun filled holiday break. Edens Landing State School focuses on building better learning environments for all students through innovative and exciting curriculum and actively teaching our students appropriate behaviour that allows them to get their needs met in efficient and socially acceptable ways, as well as rewarding students for demonstrating appropriate behaviour. We achieve this through Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework which you can read about in this newsletter.

Uniforms

Thank you to our amazing families who have sent their children to school, in full school uniform. It has been pleasing to see our students returning to school wearing their school uniform with pride. For those who are not sure of school expectations it is outlined below.

Girls: Shorts, skirt or skorts in navy blue. School shirt. Black school shoes with short white socks.
Boys: Shorts in navy blue. Black school shoes with short white socks.
All students: If hair touches the collar, students are to tie their hair up. All fringes must be out of eyes (trimmed or pinned). Ribbons, headbands and bows/hair ties are to be school appropriate and in school colours. Jo-Jo bows (or other large items) are not part of our school uniform, even if they are in the school colours.

Watches, stud or sleeper earrings and medical alert items are the only permissible jewellery. Culturally significant pieces permitted where appropriate.

Hats must be worn for all outside activities. Our school hat is reversible so can be worn for sports days and competitions. If a school-hat is not purchased from the uniform shop, a navy blue wide brimmed hat is required. Caps are not sun-safe so are not appropriate for school use.

From the Year 3 Team

Our Year 3 students are very excited to be playing in their new area. Mr Russell is spending time with our Year 3 students teaching them how to play new games in the beautiful space they now have as their own.

From the Year 4 Team

Our budding Year 4 students have already started their novel study. They are very excited to be reading “How to Train Your Dragon.” They are keen to embark on this adventure as they follow the characters on their quest to be the best they can be. Please ask your children about the book they are reading and discuss the development of each of the characters.

From the Year 5 Team

Our Year 5 students have started the year full of enthusiasm. They have already shown their teachers that they are ready and eager to learn. The Year 5 Teachers are planning and organising their excursion to the Planetarium on Tuesday 9 March. Further information will be coming home this week outlining payment details. This is an important aspect of both Term 1 and 2 learning so it would be great to see all students attend.

From the Year 6 Team

Year 6 is a very exciting year for students, with lots of special opportunities available to them. School Leaders were announced last year, with our badge ceremony being held on assembly early this term.

Seniors received their senior shirts at the end of 2020 and look wonderful wearing them with pride. If you missed ordering a shirt last year and would still like to purchase one, please contact the office as we have a few extras (in limited sizes) left.

This year our seniors will attend their Leadership Big Day out this term and Camp at the end of the year. These are both wonderful opportunities for students to challenge themselves and develop skills they didn’t know they could. Additionally information will be sent home closer to the events.

Deputy Principal’s News

A great start to 2021! Children are settling into the routines and demonstrating their eagerness to learn and share their successes. I have been able to walk through classrooms and observe engaged, inspired learners, well done to everyone!

Homework, Home reading and Student Planners.

Very soon all children in the lower school will be starting home reading. This year we are encouraging the children to choose their own book – either for enjoyment, or to practise their reading skills.

We are investing a considerable amount of money from the Student Resource Scheme to purchase books and resources for reading, including home reading.

It is important that parents write the title of the book in the Student planner / diaries and return them EACH DAY, so your child can choose another book if needed.

We have introduced The Student Planner as an avenue for children and parents to plan and record homework tasks, as well as an avenue of communication between the teacher and parents.

Each week the children will be recording the “PBL Rule of the Week” which they are explicitly learning about in class. Parents can use this information to have conversations about the rule so that it is reinforced at home.

If you have chosen not to participate in the Student Resource Scheme then you will need to purchase the Student Planner from the office for a cost of $15.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
FOR LEARNING AT ELSS

What is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)?

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools develop safe and supportive learning environments.

Schools which implement the PBL framework make sure all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and establish clear and consistent boundaries. Staff take a proactive, preventative approach to ensure all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. Student outcomes are monitored so identified students can receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access intensive support to enable them to engage successfully at school.

PBL and Bullying Prevention

PBL is based on the belief that all students should have access to the supports needed to prevent the development and continued use of problem behaviours, including bullying. PBL places emphasis on the behaviour rather than the student, therefore, labels such as “bully” or “victim” are considered unhelpful, with the focus instead directed towards describing behaviour specifically and in relation to the setting in which it occurs (for example, “name calling in the playground before school”).

PBL takes a school-wide approach to bully prevention by teaching:

  • what bullying looks like
  • what to do before and when bullying behaviour is seen
  • how to teach others what to do
  • how to reduce the effectiveness of bullying through establishment of a positive school environment.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 1, 2, 3 and 4 Term 1:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. To start the year all teachers will be revisiting our school expectations – I am Safe, I am Respectful, I am a Learner.

Office News

2021 Student Resource Scheme

Invoices for 2021 Student Resource Scheme were generated November 10 2020, if you have not received your invoice via email please contact the office.

The scheme for this year was approved at the last P&C Meeting to remain at $200 per student, which provides exceptional value for money. If families were to purchase the individual items via other methods the total cost could be between $780-$990 per student.

Families who wish to alter their SRS participation preference for next year, either to opt in or opt out, must complete a new Participation Agreement Form. These forms are available from the school website or the office.

Instrumental Music participation follows the same process, so if your child currently has instrumental music lessons at school or hires a school instrument and you wish to change the participation option for 2021, a new PAF will need to be completed and returned to the school office asap.

Information documents are available from the school office and the website.

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

The payment window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities. Payment information and a hyperlink are on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. The hyperlink makes the payment process very easy, providing a simple and quick link to the payment portal for that individual invoice.

Chappy News

Hi everyone,

For the new families here at Edens Landing State School, I am the school chaplain. My name is Tricia Quattromani and I started here in 2015 and work at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My role here at school is to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to staff, students and their carers/parents.

This support is given in various ways, for example it could be through having one on one conversations, being a listening ear, breakfast club, parent’s afternoon teas or running programs. One of the programs that I run here at school is the YMCA Breakfast Club Program. This program is supplied with all the food needed, such as bread, cereal and milk by the YMCA Kingston through donations. This program is free and will be starting up again next Tuesday 9 of February from 8.30am to 8.45am on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the kitchen. Breakfast is important to get our brains working and ready to learn and I am excited to be able to get this program going again this year.

SUPA Club is a spiritual support program for years 4 to 6 students that I run within the school on Thursdays at second break. This program is available to students who wish to learn more about the bible and is a program that requires parent permission to join. Permission forms will be sent home with students who express their interest.

If you would like to know more about any of these programs, to find out more about what I do or would like to contact me about anything else, please feel free to email me on Pquat0@eq.edu.au.

Cheers,
Chappy Tricia

Next P&C meeting held February 15 at 6.15pm in the Admin Staffroom.

Tuckshop News

Welcome back everyone and a big WELCOME to all our new families to our school community.

The only way of ordering lunches for your children is our online platform, Flexischools. Please do not send cash or bag orders with your children. This year second break has been included in where you order first break. This means you do not have to go and place another separate order once you have ordered first break. Just scroll down and find the SECOND BREAK section in first break to order. It will still need to be picked up from the tuckshop by the children at second break (1 pm) First break orders are still collected by class tuckshop monitors.

There have also been some price increases due to supplier price rises. Last year during the peak of COVID most of my suppliers saw large price increases of raw materials and products and did not increase prices. Unfortunately, they have had to pass on the inevitable price increase to customers this year.

The tuckshop menu is in the process of being completed and will hopefully be sent home in the next couple of weeks. Please keep an eye out in your child’s bag for this. When this has been handed out, I will post on our Facebook page. Any information regarding Tuckshop will be posted on our Facebook page, so do not forget to find it and like it for all your updates.

Please be aware of the amount of food you order for your children for first break. They have a limited time to eat and keeping hot and cold food that is ordered, prepared, and served at the correct temperature for the 11am break until second break, could potentially lead to illness. Hot food and sandwiches are only prepared for first break.

Flexischools cut off is 8.00 am the day of service, please have your orders in before this time. If you have ordered lunch for your child and they are absent from school on the day you have ordered, please contact the TUCKSHOP on 38057999 to let me know by 8.30 am to either cancel or hold over the order for another day. If no contact or late contact is made the order will stand and no refund or hold over of the order will be available. Please do not contact the busy office staff nor leave a message on the absence line, the absence line is for absences ONLY.

Flexischools IOU feature. If your child has forgotten their lunch and you are contacted by the office and wish the tuckshop to supply lunch for your child, you will receive a note from the tuckshop letting you know how much you owe. You can then pay that amount on the flexischools IOU feature. For example, if your bill comes to a total of $6.80 then click onto the IOU icon and select the different denominations to the amount of $ 6.80 (3 x $2 and 4 x .20 c) that amount then is transferred to the tuckshop and your bill is paid. I receive confirmation each time an IOU is paid. It is a fast and simple way to know your bill is paid and as the tuckshop is not accepting money, it is an ideal way to pay.

I have had a few people ask why they cannot find the specific lunch menus whether it be before school, first break and IOU.

If you are using the Flexischools App

  • scroll down to FOOD.
  • swipe across to find the appropriate menu.
  • click on ORDER for any of the 3 different FOOD selections or click PAY on the IOU section

If you are using the website, this is what it will look like. Use the arrow at the side to click across to select the correct service.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registration has been completed you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any Flexischool account questions, Flexischools has a great FAQ section or you can contact them via email. At the current time, their phone lines are not in operation, you can find email contact information on their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
