NAPLAN week

This week our year 3 and 5 students completed NAPLAN testing. Students were well prepared by our team of expert teachers and made us proud as they did their best over the course of the week.

Thank you to parents and caregivers who helped support their children by ensuring their children had a good night’s sleep the night before each test and a good breakfast each morning. NAPLAN reports will be available later in the year.

BUSH DANCE 2019!

Please remember that Friday the 21 June is the date for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance, we have the Ran Tan Bush Band coming back to perform and there will be entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Entry will be a gold coin donation as was the case last year.

A huge THANK YOU to the very generous families who have already started to send in donations. Your support will ensure the night will be a very successful one.

URGENT: We desperately need jars for our jar stall. Clean jars without the label and items to go in them please. Suggestions: Lollies, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Bottles can be left at Mrs. Gibson’s office. If you don’t have a jar, just send in the items and we will put them in jars for you.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the teachers run stalls and activities. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know.

The Student Council are once again running the Lob-A-Choc stall on the night. This was a huge success last year with everyone lining up to take a turn, if we get enough chocolate bars we will be able to run two stalls to reduce the time standing in line. In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

For those who did not attend last year, this is how the ‘Lob a Choc’ works. It involves setting up blocks of chocolate (a variety of big and small) randomly on a wire grid. Customers stand behind a line and throw coins, trying to land them on the chocolate blocks. If they are successful, the chocolate is theirs. Under some blocks of chocolate there will be a ‘golden ticket’ which offers the winner a bonus prize. All funds raised through this stall will go directly to our kitchen garden program.

In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff are always amazing at baking up a storm. Last year we had many families donating baked items which was a much appreciated addition to our stall. Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods is asked to let their child’s classroom teacher know or simply deliver the goods to Mrs Gibson’s office in the morning on the day.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

NEWS FROM THE KITCHEN GARDEN

Currently, Coles is offering containers through Flybuys. The kitchen is in desperate need of containers for storage in each kitchen space. If you do not need the containers, please consider using your credits to get the 1.4 & 1.5L containers for our kitchen. They are the perfect size for little hands to manage.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our explicit teaching of behaviour expectations will continue throughout the year, focusing on the Rule of the Week – each week teachers explicitly teach lessons which focus on a selected aspect of school expectations.

Teachers will be discussing these with students and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule or strategy.

Week 4 & 5 – Managing Emotions strategy- Self-talk, talk to an adult.

This week rule of the week for weeks 4 & 5 is about ‘Self talk and talk to an adult’. As Adults, we have always role modelled what self-talk sounds like as we prompt our children through their daily lives. We often us phrases such as “You can do it buddy!” “Think positive”, “You will be okay or alright” etc. Now, it is time for our children to grow and be encouraged to do the self-talk on their own while learning and using the language required to talk to an adult about how they feel using positive words rather than inappropriate actions.

Here are some of the strategies teachers will be using with students.

  • Take 5 breathing at the video below.
  • Self-talk strategies:
      -  Use self-talk - teach a simple, positive message your student can say to himself/herself in stressful situations. For example, “Stop and calm down,” “Stay in control,” “I can handle this.”
      -  Tear your anger into little pieces - tell your student to draw or write what is upsetting him/her on a piece of paper. Then tear it into little pieces and “throw the anger away.” He/she can also use the concept by imaging that his/her anger is slowly leaving him/her in little pieces. Make sure you provide scratch paper!

Deputy Principal’s News

School is a great new adventure for most children, and play is one of the keys to working out how to get along with others and fit in. It’s also central to your child’s overall development and wellbeing.

Children need to experiment with what is it means to be social – they have to learn how to make friends and how to deal with disappointment when games don’t go their way.

Here are play ideas and games for kids in the early school years.

Chappy News

Hi Everyone,

Next week from the 19th to the 25th is known as Chappy Week and during the week I will be involved in some Fundraisers. On Tuesday night the 21st at Holmview Mcdonalds will be having McChappy Night where 10% of sales between 5.30pm and 8pm both instore and drive through will go to the Chaplaincy services of Edens Landing, Cedar Creek, and Windaroo primary and high school. I will be at the store myself on Tuesday night hope to see some of you there.

I thought that I would give you small snapshot about who Chaplains are and what Chaplains do. If you are interested I have copies of the 2019 SU QLD School Chaplaincy Snapshot in my office.

The average age of an SU Qld school chaplain is 43years of age. The minimum requirements for a chaplain are Cert IV in Youth work. 86% of chaplains exceed the minimum qualifications.

School chaplains provide social, emotional and spiritual support, enhancing a school’s overall wellbeing strategy and contributing to their educational goals. On average chaplains spend 47% of their time on social, emotional and spiritual support. 17% on educational support, 14% role modelling and mentoring, 9% on extra-curricular activities, 7% on Community development and 6% on team contributions.

The top 5 issues students talk to chaplains about are 16% friendship/peer issues, 13% school behaviour, 12% bullying/harassment, 8% family breakdown and 5% mental health. Every year SU Qld chaplains have 153, 240 formal conversations and 388,960 informal conversations with students. They have around 5,211 pastoral conversations every week with school staff which makes up 24% of their pastoral care conversations, so in an average 3 day week a chaplain would have 9 pastoral conversations. With parents/ carers they have 3,025 conversations every week which makes up 14% of their pastoral conversations. So in an average 3 day week a chaplain would have 5 pastoral conversations.

I hope this quick snapshot has helped you to understand what school chaplains do.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS.

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Tuckshop News

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we are a cash only over the counter service.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during play time (1pm – 1.25pm) to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have had a few children this term coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
