Principal’s News

It has come to my attention of late that the Stop, Drop and Go Zone at the front of our school is experiencing safety and traffic congestion issues in the afternoons. My concerns have been mirrored by the parent community, our teaching staff and our local adopt-a-cop Police officers, Luke and Jade.

To address these issues and increase the safety of the 2 minute Stop, Drop and Go Zone for our students and community members, we are going to trial a Stop, Drop and Go Registration system for the rest of the school year.

If you use the zone to pick up your child in the afternoon you will need to register and agree to the conditions of use, by returning the attached form to the office. Once registered you will receive a name card, which will have your child’s family name on it, to display on your car windscreen visor. You may request a 2nd name card if you have more than one person or more than one vehicle that collects your child.

How does the Stop, Drop and Go Zone and Registered Name Card operate?

  1. Students are to wait in the appropriate area on the school grounds for their parents/carers to arrive at the Stop, Drop and Go Zone.
  2. Parents should ensure that they have a registered name card placed on their sun visor, attached by two elastic bands and ensure it is visible for teachers supervising the Stop, Drop and Go Zone. Parents/carers are requested to stay in their car at all times.
  3. Students should be listening for their family name (the one displayed on the registered name card) to be called by teachers and can then proceed to the awaiting vehicle in the Stop, Drop and Go Zone.
  4. NO PARKING in the Stop Drop and Go Zone! Cars will be asked to move on after 2 minutes if their child is not ready to be picked up.
  5. In the mornings the same rules apply – parents/carers are to remain in their car while children get out of the car. Please do not use the Stop Drop and Go Zone if you need to park and assist/walk your child to class in the mornings. The same rule applies to our general carpark – if you are not parking and getting out of your vehicle to drop off your child then please use the Stop, Drop and Go Zone.
  6. I thank you for your assistance in making our Stop, Drop and Go Zone a safer place.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2017

At the end of this term our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Notes have gone home in the next 2 weeks informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 5th December. This year we are holding the event at the school to reduce the cost to parents and to offer graduating students a dance after the ceremony.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 6th of December. This year we will once again be heading to Brisbane’s South Bank Parklands to go to the movies (Son of Big Foot), have lunch and a quick swim. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students. Please fill out the permission forms which have been sent home and utilise the payment options indicated to ensure your child’s place on the day. If you don’t have the note, please see attached or contact the office.

Making the early years count - a wonderful imitative from the Queensland Government

Did you know 90 per cent of a child’s brain development takes place in the first five years?

Babies and young children are developing both physically and mentally at a rapid rate in the early years. They are learning every day, through every experience. From day one, parents and families play a vital role in providing love, attention and interesting experiences to stimulate a child’s development. As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher, and there are so many ways to make the early years count.

On The Early Years Count home page you can find information and activities specific to your child and family, based on age, relationship, location and activity preferences. If you’d prefer to look around and see what else is here, you can check out the five ways to get started for tips and information on supporting your child’s early learning and development through play, care, encouragement, numeracy (read & count) and literacy (talk & listen) or sort by age to find content relevant to your child.

2018 Classes

We are currently working on 2018 staffing and classes. Please ring the school office if you know your child will not be attending ELSS next year. If we are kept informed it often avoids the inevitable Day 8 class changes in 2018 when DET calculate staff vs student ratios that may have changed over the holiday period.

Our Teachers Thank You

On the 27th October we celebrated World Teacher's Day. We had a wonderful morning tea with food supplied by the parents and carers. The food was amazing! Our sincere thanks to all who helped on the day and it was much appreciated by all of our wonderful staff. Edens Landing is lucky to have such a dedicated school community.

Before School Procedure

A reminder that the preferred before school arrival time for students is 8.15 - 8.30am. On arrival ALL students are to sit in the hall. At 8.30am the Prep to Year 2 students move to the Junior Covered Area. At 8:45 the students will then move to their classrooms to begin their learning. The YMCA is available for before school care if parents are required to drop their children off for work reasons earlier than 8am.

READY, SET, WRITE

All students have been participating in our Ready, Steady, Write program across the school.

Every day after second break students participate in 10 minutes of writing in response to a stimulus. The purpose of this is to increase student’s enjoyment of writing and writing stamina.

It has been wonderful to walk around the school and see everyone engaged in writing.

PREP

The aliens crashed into Prep H’s classroom last Monday. They left a huge mess and underwear was strewn everywhere. The site had to be secured and made safe by Ms Grant and Mr Steve before the children could clean it up.
The children then decided that people needed to be told about this event, so they wrote letters to Constable Jade, Mrs Quigley, their parents, Mr Steve, Mrs Grant and Spider girl. This formed the letter for their assessment. The writing in these letters was amazing, with children writing for a purpose to inform others.

YEAR ONE

This term Year 1 have been exploring persuasive writing. We have been trying to persuade Miss Pinner to get us a class pet, wear free dress, to be the teacher for the day and to give us extra iPad time. We love learning how to use persuasive language.
