Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

There is a great buzz around the school as I talk to parents at drop off/pick up, engage with students in classrooms/playground, and learn alongside staff in rooms/meetings. All stakeholders have contributed to our great school. I thank the parents that completed the community INPUT survey as this form’s important opinions into our strategic planning. The feedback is clear-

Keep- Our amazing culture and opportunities.

Polish- Even more communication to families.

Phrases that sums up ELSS- ‘Amazing’ ‘Community’

World Teachers day celebration is on Friday 28th October- Happy World Teachers’ Day to my amazing teachers at ELSS. I am very proud of you all. Thanks for your hard work to Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to do more and be more. Daily I see your commitment to our students and community. We are a great school because we have great teachers leading our great students. Special shout out to those parents that thanked their teacher or brought in food for our morning tea.

Many budgets within our school funding are based on enrolments. It is at this time of the year that families are advising that they are moving away from the area and a change of school is necessary. If you are planning to leave our school for the 2023 school year, I ask that you advise the office in writing as soon as possible and complete our Exit Form to ensure we have the most up to date enrolment information. Please share this with friends who are leaving or those you may know are enrolling. If your circumstances change over the upcoming months and a change of school is necessary please let us know.

Our students across the school are soaring to success with their growth and learning. The Leadership Team are in classroom daily. Our teachers use a range of teaching strategies for every child’s learning growth. Here is evidence-

Congratulations to one of our past students, Jonty Hasenkam who was selected as a 2022 Australian Olympic Change-Maker Award recipient, following a nomination by Windaroo Valley State High School!

The Australian Olympic Change-Maker program recognises students who demonstrate the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities.

Jonty also received the 2022 ACE Person of the Year Award, a Bronze Award for district cross country and a gold award for QLD stae Athletics.

Jonty represented his school at the south coast regionals at Qld State Athletics two weeks ago I high jump, javelin and received a silver medal in pole vault with a PB of 3.8m.

He also competed in the Chemist Warehouse Australian Championships in March this year for under 17s Pole Vault placing 6th in Australia.

This is a clear example of how ELSS prepares students for future success through effort and attitude. We are proud to see our past students soaring to success.

This year we will run a ticket system for purchasing food and glow sticks etc. $2 a ticket, available from the Kitchen (the same as Bush Dance).

From the Year 3 Team

Reading:

We are going to read an information text that has a labelled diagram about an insect and answers a series of questions about it. It will inform us more about a particular insect. It means that the children have to read and think about their responses to select the correct answer.

You can assist your child with reading any information text (that is in a child friendly -form from a library book or on the internet). Ask them some questions with answers that they have to think about with their general world knowledge- not just straight from what they have read. A question starter like: Where have you read about another insect that did this? What other ways could this insect have protected itself? will assist your child.

Writing:

We are writing an information report about an insect we have learnt about in class. The Year 3s will have a choice to write about from: ant, bee, or a butterfly.

You could assist your child by researching these insects at home or from your local library- or even from the back yard! Point out what these insects are doing and ask your child to tell you what they know about them. The more they talk about what they will write about, the better their final writing outcome.

From the Year 4 Team

In English this term we have been exploring a range of humorous poems and the word play within that makes them entertaining. We have been practising using alliteration, onomatopoeia, spoonerisms, neologisms, nonsense words and puns to add humour to our poetry writing. Students have been interacting with our class Bump It Up Wall and English learning wall to help guide them during practise writes.

From the Year 5 Team

This term in English, our students will demonstrate their understanding of persuasive texts by creating a convincing text arguing for or against the statement, "Students should attend school six days a week." This topic is sure to create some great discussions.

In addition, there will be a reading comprehension task to determine the students' understanding of a persuasive discussion text.

From the Year 6 Team

This term in English, students will be creating written information report that explains natural disasters for their final Year 6 English assessment. They will choose to write a report about either an earthquake or a volcano. Students will brainstorm, plan, draft and edit their report before publishing their final report.

From the HPE Team

Prep-This term, students will demonstrate practices and protective behaviours to keep themselves safe and healthy in different situations.

Year 1-This term, students will demonstrate basic fundamental movement skills within tennis activities and games.

Year 2-This term, students will examine health messages from a breakfast cereal and also describe how to keep themselves healthy and physically active through lifestyle choices.

Year 3-This term, students will investigate how emotional responses vary and will use decision-making and problem-solving skills to understand how to interact positively with others.

Year 4-This term, students will perform basic golf movement skills and elements of movement to perform a shot.

Year 5-This term, students will perform specialised AFL skills such as kicking and passing and will combine movement concepts and strategies in game situations.

Year 6-This term, students will perform specialised volleyball skills such as digging, setting, serving and spiking. Students will combine volleyball movement concepts and strategies in game situations. Students will demonstrate fair play and skills to work collaboratively during volleyball activities and games.

For the past few weeks we have been explicitly teaching, and acknowledging the children for using kind words.

It is interesting talking to some of our younger students about using our manners. In one conversation in prep a child asked me why we say sorry. It had not really occurred to me that some children do not see the need to say ‘sorry’ or ‘thank-you’ as they do not understand how their words and actions affect others. We teach manners to our children to help them develop empathy and the understanding that if we want others to be kind to us, we need to be kind to others.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS

Prep

This term in prep, students are writing personal recounts of events that have happened to them. Over the last couple of weeks, the Prep students have been engaged in a variety of fun experiences ranging from exploring the garden, to growing plants and going on their first school excursion. The students then had the opportunity to write about their experiences and discuss what they liked and did not like about the experiences.

In Prep/1A we are learning to write a procedure to tell someone how to do something. This week, as a class, we have been creating a procedure on how to make fairy bread. We have been focusing on writing simple steps that start with a capital letter, have finger spaces and end with a full stop.

Year 1

This term we have been learning to write sentences with rhyming words.

We have been learning how to identify and write words that rhyme.

We are able to use our success criteria to identify what we need in our sentences. We are able to use our bump it up wall to improve our work and use verbal or written feedback to bump up our work.

We have been learning to work together in small groups showing teamwork in creating sentences with rhyming words.

Year 2

This term in English year 2 students are learning to write and present procedures. A procedure details the steps or instructions to do or make something and gives you a list of ingredients, materials, utensils or equipment needed. Students will choose ideas from Roald Dahl’s book George’s Marvellous Medicine and create a procedure for George to make something for his Grandma. They will then use their written procedure to create a multimodal presentation (such as a poster or performance) and present it to their peers.

We have invited other teachers and staff to try our instructions. Mr Curran tried to cut the bread with his hand!

So we had to re-write our instructions to tell him to use a knife!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes. Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

Weeks 5 and 6 Term 4: I am a respectful when I listen to and follow instructions

Following directions is one of the most important social skills that children develop. Be it in the classroom, at home with the family or on the sporting field, a child who can listen, understand and then follow instructions and directions will go a long way.

We all know that children don’t always follow directions so it is helpful to know how to teach children so that they understand the why following directions is such an important skill to have.

Children don’t follow directions for a number of reasons.

They may not be paying attention when the direction is given or they may not understand some or all of the language used. They might find it hard to see the reason for the direction or perhaps they find it hard to remember what is said or the order of things they are being asked to do.

It may just be that the directions were poor.

To help give your child the best chance of following directions, here are some things you can do.

Gain your child’s attention

To help, try to remove as many distractions as possible; use a signal if necessary rather than raising your voice; wait until your child or children have shown that they are attending; call your child or children by name; make eye-contact and don’t hand out equipment or other things before giving the direction.

Give clear directions to follow

Organise your directions in a sequence to avoid confusion. Ensure that you give verbal instructions using your child’s vocabulary level not your own. Include no more than two directions at a time. Repeat directions as many times as necessary in a calm, positive manner and provide a physical demonstration if necessary. Routine directions can also be displayed visually.

Check for understanding

Ask your child or specific children to repeat the directions and/or demonstrate the directions.

You’ll be able to understand if there are issues following directions if those same directions aren’t clearly spoken back to you.

Monitor your child’s progress and provide feedback

Keep an eye on how quickly and efficiently your child or children complete set tasks. If in a classroom situation, keep moving around the classroom, providing continual feedback to groups and individual children.

Remediate if necessary

Even with the best directions, there may be children who don’t follow directions for some reason. Check to see who is having problems and repeat/reteach if necessary. Help your child complete directions if necessary.

If your child’s order has been cancelled you will have to reorder when you want them to have tuckshop, there is no ability to hold over orders.

Tuckshop relies on volunteers to run. If we do not have the volunteer base to carry out daily tuckshop tasks, then menu items have to be streamlined to accommodate the amount of help we have. There are no special skills required to help in the tuckshop. Some of the jobs you may be asked to do are, make sandwiches/wraps, process bags, help pack food into bags and class tubs, wash up, staple bags, filling fridges and freezers. This list is not exhaustive but gives you an idea of what sort of things you might be asked to do to help. If you think you can help on a regular basis, please contact the tuckshop. The only requirement from the school is you complete the mandatory training in the office prior to starting to help. Anyone other than the parents of a child ie grandparents, aunts/uncles must apply for and have Working with Children (Blue) card before starting.

If you have not signed up for Flexischools or need help registering please pop up to the tuckshop on Wednesday morning between 8:30 am – 9:00 am for us to help you set Flexischools up or email the tuckshop at tuckshop@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au or message the P&C Facebook page.

Edens Landing Police Beat

The most wonderful time of the year is almost here! Christmas is just around the corner. Every child deserves to experience some Christmas magic. Unfortunately, some children may not be able to.

This year, Edens Landing Police Beat is asking for your help.

YFS is a locally run Logan based charity, that provides support to vulnerable children. This could be children who are victims of domestic violence situations, homelessness and other vulnerabilities. YFS have been providing support to the Logan community since 1983.

Edens Landing Police Beat’s Christmas Light Display will be operating every night from 1st November 2022 from 6pm.

We are asking for your help and generosity in gift donations that will be donated to YFS, to provide children who may be in a vulnerable situation this Christmas season, and spread a little bit of that Christmas magic to them. Gift donations may be left under the Christmas tree at Edens Landing Police Beat drop off point, which will be delivered to YFS throughout the Christmas period so that they can give these children some positive Christmas experiences. The following requests have been made by YFS, to allow for an effective process:

Please do not wrap the gifts, as they need to be checked for suitability by YFS as to how best distribute (Gift bags are suitable). Please no weapons, or mock weapons. Please only new items in packaging (for health and safety reasons).

While donations will be accepted during the light display each night, you may also make donations at any time during the day at the Edens Landing Police Beat.

For more information on YFS and the work they do, or if you are in a vulnerable situation and in need of assistance, please check out their website at YFS.org.au.

We thank you for any contribution you can make to help these vulnerable children’s Christmas experience, and hope you enjoy the light display this year at Edens Landing Police Beat.

Merry Christmas,

Senior Constable Mitch Collins.
