STUDENT COUNCIL- DAY FOR DANIEL

Edens Landing State School Student Council will once again support this important day on 28 October. Students are invited to wear red to signify the day as our school walks around the block to raise awareness of this important message. Please look out for the flyer with all of the details. We ask students to bring a gold coin to donate to this very worthwhile charity.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

From the Year 3 Team

English: What you ever wanted to know about INSECTS but were afraid to ask! We will be investigating a HEAP of facts about them as we develop our understanding about information texts.

Be prepared for some “flying facts” to come home. We will study the creatures under the headings of: Appearance/ Habitat/ Interesting facts.

Mathematics:

We will continue to discuss numbers to 10,000. Your child will work out next numbers in patterns, which place value the digits are in as well as writing the numbers in various ways.

Times tables are being learnt, so that by the end of the year we can know, for sure, our 2x,3x,5x and 10x. This is great to practice in the car as you drive to school.

Science:

What happens to the properties of materials when we change their properties. Solids, Liquids and gas -chemical sciences, are the focus for this term. …. Who doesn’t like melted chocolate? We will study how we know what makes a gas, what makes a liquid and what makes a solid -so that we can define each of these scientific categories using scientific language.

Deputy Principal’s News

I am really embracing the modern way society is looking at mental health. Once we would try to hide our struggles and consider ourselves a failure if we needed help.

During Mental Health week we were able to share our stories, examine strategies and celebrate our strengths and weaknesses in regards to our own health in a wholistic way.

It is important that parents and carers look after their physical and mental health so we are better equipped to help the children we serve. Like they tell us in the safety talk on an airplane – put your own mask on before helping others.

From the classrooms

Prep

English - this term in English preps are learning to write a recount about real events. We are also learning to read and comprehend short texts. Children are experimenting with sentence writing in their daily writing

Maths- this term in maths preps are learning to sequences and identify missing numbers to 20 forwards and backwards. We are also learning to make simple inferences from data we have collected.

Science - we are leaning about living and non-living things and their needs.

In Prep/1A we are learning to write a procedure to tell someone how to do something. This week, as a class, we have been creating a procedure on how to make fairy bread. We have been focusing on writing simple steps that start with a capital letter, have finger spaces and end with a full stop.

Year 1

In English

We are learning to write simple sentences with rhyming words.

We are learning to perform a reading of a poem created in class to our peers

In Maths

We are learning to describe 2D shapes. We are learning to recognize and classify familiar 3D objects using obvious features.

We are learning to carry out simple addition and subtraction problems using counting strategies. We are learning to recognise, model and write numbers to 100, locate numbers on a number line and explain partitioning of numbers.

In Science –

We are learning to describe objects and events from our everyday lives and to describe changes in the local environment.

Year 2

English – Procedure:

We are learning to read and write procedures using steps with action verbs. They help us follow instructions, recipes, manuals and play games step by step. Our goal will be to create a multimodal procedure for our own episode on Edens Landing TV.

Mathematics – Number, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability:

We are learning to:

  • Recognise, model, represent and order numbers to 1000
  • Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies
  • Recognise and represent multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays (using visual and concrete materials)
  • Create displays of data using lists, table and picture graphs and interpret them

Science – Water Works

We are learning how water is essential to life. As humans, we not only drink water, we also use it for cooking, hygiene, recreation and agriculture. Australia is a dry continent with an expanding population, and how we use water has become increasingly important. Water is a precious resource.

The Water works unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. It provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of, and appreciation for a precious natural resource. Through investigations, students explore how water is used, where water comes from and how to use it responsibly.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes. Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Weeks 3 and 4 Term 4: I am a Respectful I show kindness to others

Why Should We Teach Kindness at School?

There are as many benefits to being the recipient of kindness as there are arguments for being kind. Simply stated:

  • Kindness alleviates stress and lessens the pressure to perform.
  • It creates happy, relaxed individuals who genuinely care about one another, the classroom and the school.
  • Kindness helps children feel as though they belong. It increases self-esteem and helps them realise their vast potential.
  • In a kind and caring environment, children feel more willing to share their true thoughts and feelings.
  • They develop better focus and longer attention spans.
  • It reduces bullying.
  • A school that is ruled by kindness improves individual mental health and promotes feelings of well-being and gratitude.

For these reasons, the staff at Edens Landing State School always emphasise and reward acts of kindness in and out of the classroom.

Seven ways Parents can help to teach children to be kind

Kindness is not to be confused with how well you are liked, but rather how you perceive your behaviour toward others. It’s about your ability to empathise, be compassionate and express genuine feelings.

1. Demonstrate kindness through everyday actions.

Young children learn by imitating behaviours. By demonstrating kindness through your own actions, your children will copy and learn from you. Showing acts of kindness expands your child’s awareness beyond their family. They include:

  • Holding open a door for someone else.
  • Checking in on a neighbour’s well-being
  • Donating goods towards a charity.
  • Calling a family friend to see how they’ve been going.

2. Teaching children kindness begins with teaching them about their emotions.

Encourage children to build relationships with others and regulate their emotions through their own self-control and mindfulness. Children love to express their feelings through movement, music and dance. Mirror-play also teaches children about self-awareness, empathy and emotions.

3. Teach children to name and talk about their emotions.

Young children may not yet have the ability to describe the way they’re feeling. You can help them find the words to express their feelings by naming the way they feel. They may be able to empathise and recognise those same feelings in others.

It’s essential to be able to talk about your feelings. When your child is angry or sad, ask them why. Try to get them to open up about their feelings. Let them know you’re listening and share how you’re feeling too.

Helping children make sense of their feelings and recognise those same feelings in others can help them to build positive relationships and friendships with other children. It also provides them with the tools to feel confident when expressing themselves in groups.

4. Promote kindness in children by helping them read cues in others

Have an open dialogue with your child about the way other people feel or seem to feel. People don’t always react or show feelings in the same way. Our tone of voice and the way we reveal our expressions and body language may have subtle differences.

Empathy is about learning how to read those differences. When you watch a television show or read a book together, you can discuss what feelings a character might be expressing and how this makes your child feel.

Mindfulness can help your child be aware of their surroundings including other people without judging.

5. Be empathetic towards your child’s feelings.

Be aware of your own responses towards your child’s emotions. It’s not about feeling sorry but a genuine way to connect with your child and understand what they are going through. Don’t ignore their feelings but take an interest and validate how they feel. Watch for verbal cues but also ask how they are feeling.

6. Show compassion and interest in others.

Be aware and show compassion for those around you. Let your child see that you are emotionally available and that you want to make a positive difference in the lives of others. One way to show compassion is to volunteer with a local community group to do charity work. Involving the whole family also broadens your child’s sense of self-identity and belonging.

7. Teach empathy to children by encouraging emotional sharing.

Children should feel safe to show their feelings even when it is a negative emotion. Teaching children kindness means creating a safe and secure environment for your child by being open and receptive to their feelings.

When your child demonstrates empathetic behaviour towards someone else, praise them for their compassion. Take notice of genuine acts of kindness. To promote repetition of their empathy and kindness provide positive feedback.

You can encourage your child to think about others by asking them questions like:

  • Do you think our neighbour would like this extra bread?
  • Do you think your brother would like to play with your toys too?
  • Your sister has an ‘owie’. Should we get her a band-aid?
  • Daddy’s not feeling well. Do you think we should make him chicken soup?

Teaching children kindness is a kindness in itself. Help them learn about their feelings, get them to talk about how they feel and acknowledge your child when they are being respectful and kind towards others.
