Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2022

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

Our mission to Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance is seen daily in my walk throughs into classrooms. Some inspirational work from our teachers to increase student learning and growth. Students are on tasks, engaged in their learning and wanting to improve. I have received amazing feedback from families which I share frequently with all our staff at ELSS. We are partners in learning.

Some of our recent events- Book Fair, Book Parade, Prep Transitions, STEM it Day, Evacuation Drill, Teacher Aide and Support Staff appreciate day, Student Free Day (school closed 2nd Sep)

Reading is a super power! It was a great celebration across the school for Book week and Book Parade. The displays, learning and costumes on Friday was engaging. It was wonderful to share the Book Parade with family members onsite. Lots of photos and laughs as we highlighted different characters from many books. I love the commitment from all ELSS staff to our dress up. Great role modelling and showing students/families that our work is serious but we don’t need to be serious all the time.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our fantastic teacher aides here at Edens Landing State School. Our teacher aides take on many roles, all aligned to improving student academic and social outcomes. Our Teacher Aides and Support Staff share the same role at ELSS- Change a kid’s life.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 2. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture.

School events Coming up- Vision screeners for Prep, Catch up photos, RU OK day? Year 5 camp, STAR of the school, Parent/Teacher interviews, Student council dress up day, Principal tour, Rewards Day.

Remaining 2022 ELSS events- Magic of Music Concert, Colour Run and Carols.

Reminders-

  • STUDENT FREE DAY - FRIDAY 3 SEPTEMBER: Reminder- Please note that this Friday 3 September is a Student Free Day across Queensland. ELSS will be CLOSED, students will not be attending school on this day. Only YMCA will be open for bookings.
  • Please focus on students arriving to school on time and not leaving early as these impacts learning for your child and all students in the class.
  • Uniform reminder notes will be sent home to families of students who are still out of uniform. We have worked closely with the P&C to build a strong focus on pride and unity through our uniform. We welcome any family to discuss financial hardship if this is a barrier to full school uniform. We are happy to support and help. We are partner in learning.
  • Look out for an end of term Pizza and Disco for students who have an attendance rate 95% or above and 0 major behaviour incidents in this term. Reminder to stay home if sick or any symptoms.
  • SeeSaw/Email communication: Communication between home and teachers is a crucial feature of Partners in Learning. Please ensure this communication is kept between work hours and allow for a 24-hour response time by staff.

Attendance at ELSS – Our school goal is 90%. As you can see from the image below, our community has work to do and a clear focus on coming to school on Fridays is required.

STEM It Day 2022

What an amazing Day the students had. A huge thank you to all of the staff and parents/carers who made the day a huge success.

Student Council Fundraiser Week 10

From the Year 3 Team

Science Assessment Year 3 - Heat it up!

Year three are studying how the heat affects properties of materials. They will be conducting class investigations into how different trays affect how an ice cube melts in the sun over a variety of different times -3 minutes, then 6 minutes, then 9 minutes etc. They will conclude which was the best tray that protected the ice from melting.

You could try this at home with a variety of materials too! …and have some fun Science talks with your children at the same time!

From the Year 4 Team

In science this Term, Year 4 students will be studying the observable properties of materials. Descriptive vocabulary is explored as well as the suitability of materials for different purposes. Students will design clothing for a monster travelling to different locations. Students will use observation, fair testing, prediction, design, and justification, to arrive at the most suitable selection of materials for their design.

From the Year 5 Team

Our students have been assessed on their understanding of how light behaves. They devised an investigation on how to make a beam of light travel through a maze and planned a solution using mirrors. Then, in small groups, they had fun testing their solutions before individually recording and reflecting on their findings.

From the Year 6 Team

This term in Science, Year 6 students will participate in a hands-on Science Day where they will conduct a range of experiments about reversible and irreversible changes. Students will use the knowledge gained to plan an investigation where they will be assessed on their ability to identify variables to be changed and measured, describe potential safety risks, identify improvements to their methods and construct texts to communicate their ideas and findings

From the Arts Teacher

Year 1: Students make and share artwork using familiar stories to create a book in Book Creator. They use story principles, composition, sound and technology in their media.
Year 2: In groups, students respond to, make and perform dance sequences that demonstrate fundamental movement skills and communicate ideas about a season.
Year 3: Students collaborate to explore and make backgrounds and puppets for a media presentation of a humorous poem.
Year 4: Students collaborate to plan and make a cultural mask with realistic and symbolic representations.

From Japanese Teacher

Year 5 Semester 2 - How do we celebrate?

In semester 2, students will create a short informative and descriptive text about Japan’s famous Cherry Blossom Festival. They will choose 4 photos which illustrate different aspects of the celebration and caption these with simple sentences to share the facts they have learned in the target language. Students will need to demonstrate knowledge of unit specific vocabulary and correct use of familiar verbs and their associated particles.

Year 6 Semester 2 – Tabemasho (Let’s Eat)

In semester 2, students will demonstrate knowledge they have learned about the language and culture associated with sharing meals in the target language. They will plan and rehearse a restaurant dialogue to communicate their needs and wants in a simulated restaurant ordering situation. Students will prepare with a scaffolded script and may refer to illustrated menus and the classrooms learning wall for support.

Deputy Principal’s News

Last week I watched a program about Em Rusciano, an Australian Comedian who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. It prompted me to share some information on this subject.

Children come to school because they enjoy learning, and socialising. If you have barriers to accessing these fundamentals then sometimes school is no longer becomes positive. We work with parents, carers and health professionals to explore the barriers to learning or socialising. Sometimes parents are asked to take their child to a doctor, optometrist, paediatrician, or psychologist as we need more information to work towards developing a plan to help your child to learn.

Over the past so many years of my career I have seen a diagnosis change a child’s life – understanding the barriers and working with the strengths always improves outcomes – and happiness.

Many young children I know have been diagnosed ADHD. ADHD is a medical condition usually diagnosed in childhood but that often lasts into adulthood, characterised by “a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development”.

They are generally children who are happy, creative, spontaneous and with high levels of energy – they want to please you and have lots of friends, however they also may experience difficulty in keeping on task, keeping in their own personal space and filtering what they say.

There are so many interesting famous people with ADHD: inventors like Thomas Edison; scientists like Albert Einstein; singers like Justin Timberlake; athletes like Michael Phelps.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might behave in challenging ways, and sometimes need a personalised plan will include strategies to guide your child towards appropriate behaviour. Such a plan might include; strategies to encourage good behaviour; social skills to help your child get along with others; strategies to manage your child’s energy levels and tiredness; strategies to support your child in the classroom.

Prep

In prep science we are learning how different toys move.

This week we made our own spinning toys and investigated how they

Year 1

In Science, Year 1 are learning about habitats of animals, how they meet the needs of living things and predict how changes can affect those living things.

Year 2

Year 2 Science Assessment

Students design a toy that will move with a push or pull, and describe a change to the toy and how it affects the toy’s movement. They pose an investigation question and make a prediction about the toy’s movement. Students represent and communicate observations and ideas.

There are two parts to the assessment

Part A: Make a toy that moves with a push or pull

Students will:

  • make a toy that is moved by a push or a pull
  • draw a labelled picture of their toy and how it moves
  • observe and record how the toy moves.

Part B: Change the way your toy moves

Students will:

  • list some changes that might affect the way their toy moves
  • pose a question to investigate how they could change the way their toy moves
  • describe any changes they will make to your toy
  • predict what will happen
  • observe and describe how their toy moves differently
  • explain why the changes they made to their toy make it move differently.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes. Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

This term students are working towards a giant slide and fairy floss as part of a day of exciting events and activities.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Weeks 9-10 Term 3: I am a learner when I actively participate in learning activities.

Students that regularly participate in class are constantly involved with the material and are more likely to remember a greater portion of the information. Active class participation also improves critical and higher-level thinking skills. Students who participate in class have been exposed to the learning well enough to be able to adopt the introduction of new concepts. This level of thinking goes beyond simple comprehension of content, and can also improve memory. Participation can also help students learn from each other, increasing comprehension through cooperation.

Tuckshop News

As we approach the end of the term, stock is being run down for the holidays. Flexischools will reflect what is available over the coming weeks.

SUSHI WEDNESDAY

Sushi is available to order for every Wednesday of the term EXCEPT for the last Wednesday of the term and the first Wednesday of the term.

All orders are to be placed on Flexischools by Tuesday, 12 noon. As the Sushi is ordered from an outside company, orders cannot be cancelled after 12 noon Tuesday, as the order is placed just after the cut off time. If the minimum order is not reached, any orders placed will be cancelled.

If you order Sushi for your child/ren and they are absent from school on the day, please contact the tuckshop (0482 175 646) to arrange collection. The Sushi orders can be kept until Thursday if your child is away on the Wednesday but after Thursday if they are not collected, they will be disposed of.

Information and reminders will be on our Facebook page regularly about Sushi Wednesday.

Children absent from school

If you have ordered tuckshop for your child and they are not attending school on that day, PLEASE call the tuckshop DIRECTLY on 0482 175 646 by 8.30 am to have their order cancelled. PLEASE DO NOT contact the office staff to ask them to pass on a message to the tuckshop. PLEASE DO NOT leave a message on the absentee line/email that you want tuckshop cancelled. If you do not contact the TUCKSHOP by 8.30 am your order will stand and will not be cancelled.

If your child’s order has been cancelled you will have to reorder when you want them to have tuckshop, there is no ability to hold over orders.

Tuckshop relies on volunteers to run. If we do not have the volunteer base to carry out daily tuckshop tasks, then menu items have to be streamlined to accommodate the amount of help we have. There are no special skills required to help in the tuckshop. Some of the jobs you may be asked to do are, make sandwiches/wraps, process bags, help pack food into bags and class tubs, wash up, staple bags, filling fridges and freezers. This list is not exhaustive but gives you an idea of what sort of things you might be asked to do to help. If you think you can help on a regular basis, please contact the tuckshop. The only requirement from the school is you complete the mandatory training in the office prior to starting to help. Anyone other than the parents of a child ie grandparents, aunts/uncles must apply for and have Working with Children (Blue) card before starting.

If you have not signed up for Flexischools or need help registering please pop up to the tuckshop on Wednesday morning between 8:30 am – 9:00 am for us to help you set Flexischools up or email the tuckshop at tuckshop@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au or message the P&C Facebook page from the link below.
