Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

I hope you have heard about our Kokoda Kids and staff who demonstrated courage, perseverance, endurance and mateship in the 18-kilometre and 30-kilometre trek for the Kokoda Challenge. Thanks to Mr Hopkinson and his team. A great display of character.

Similarly, our Musical students and staff have demonstrated their talent, commitment and team work in the two amazing performances of the Jungle Book. Thanks to Mrs Gebauers and her team. A great display of character.

Whether it be Jeans or Genes day, Science Week or daily learning- our school is making great strides to SOAR to SUCCESS. In the last 12 months alone, we have won the regional commendation for our Culture, Mrs Hitmough was named Teacher of the year for TEACHx awards, we are the only PBL demonstration school in all o south east region for our learning and now we have a teacher named as finalist in the Queensland community service award…. Watch this space

Some of our recent events- Life education continues, Prep Transitions, Kokoda Challenge, Jeans for Genes day, P&C meeting, Year 5 Science incursion, school MUSICAL, Principal Tour, Good mental health rocks workshop.

The school has received phone calls from members of the community about issues during before and after school at the basketball court across the road. ELSS students and older students are being rude to adults, vaping and playing rough. I ask parents to have these tough conversations about behaviour, also remember the school supervision times are from 8.30am inside the gates and 3.15pm at the gates.

Our teachers to an amazing job to create learning experiences daily that engage, inspire and empower EVERY student. To celebrate science week, the year 5 staff designed some amazing activities, see below-

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 2. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture.

A great job by the ELSS community by raising $507.15 for Jeans for GENES day!!! We have sent this to the organisation and received a big THANK YOU.

School events Coming up- Book Fair, Book Parade, Prep Transitions, STEM it Day, Evacuation Drill, Teacher Aide and Support Staff appreciate day, Student Free Day (school closed 2nd Sep)

Remaining 2022 ELSS events- Magic of Music Concert, Colour Run and Carols.

Reminders-

  • Please focus on students arriving to school on time and not leaving early as these impacts learning for your child and all students in the class.
  • Uniform reminder notes will be sent home to families of students who are still out of uniform. We have worked closely with the P&C to build a strong focus on pride and unity through our uniform. We welcome any family to discuss financial hardship if this is a barrier to full school uniform. We are happy to support and help. We are partner in learning.
  • Look out for an end of term Pizza and Disco for students who have an attendance rate 95% or above and 0 major behaviour incidents in this term. Reminder to stay home if sick or any symptoms.
  • Shout out to Year 6 who are leading the way for attendance at 90%. Our school goal is 93%. I would encourage everyone in the school community to promote regular attendance at school. Whilst I acknowledge the difficult time at present with COVID and flu, students should seek to maximise their attendance at school when they are feeling healthy and well.

Speech Pathology Week (21-27 August)

This week we celebrate Speech Pathology Week (21-27 August). An opportunity whereby we recognise the contribution of the 76 Speech Language Pathologists working in South East Region schools.

Speech Language Pathologists support inclusive education by working collaboratively with the school team, alongside the student and parent to identify and assess student needs, plan and design differentiated high impact teaching strategies and reasonable adjustments that support students with speech language communication difficulties to access and participate in the classroom. Being able to communicate with confidence not only enables students to connect with learning, but develop and strengthen social connections that will support them in their future educational, health, social and emotional outcomes.

More broadly, Speech Pathology Week offers a platform to raise awareness for the 1.2million people in Australia who have a communication disability. Communication disability affects a person's ability to understand and be understood by others. Whilst communication disabilities can be largely invisible, unseen and out of sight, Speech Language Pathologists strive to highlight communication as a basic human right.

Speak to your Speech Language Pathologist about how they can support your school team. The regional Team of Senior Advisors for Speech Language Therapy are also available to assist and can be contacted via email - TherapyServices.SER@qed.qld.gov.au.

Maths Assessment Year 3

We are looking at a number of different areas of mathematics for our assessment this term.

The students are currently graphing results from surveys we conduct in class -like our favourite ice cream or pets we have at home. We then graph our results using our squared maths book.

We have examined one-kilogram weights and done some investigating around objects that are more/less than one kilogram.

Our addition practise is learning how to use a jump strategy- this involves a knowledge of where numbers are on a number line.as well as knowing how to add the different place values, e.g. 41+ 21= 41 + 20 and then put on the 1

Another example:

From the Year 4 Team

During mathematics lessons this term we have been exploring place value (tens of thousands), multiplication and division facts, data analysis, time, chance and probability, fractions and measurement (capacity). Students have been engaging in daily mathematical warmups and weekly maths rotations to help solidify their learning and put their skills into context.

It is encouraged students continue using their knowledge and apply it in real world situations. Some suggestions for at home are:

  • Practising reading analogue clocks and discussing time-based word problems (e.g. ‘if we leave the house at 8:20 am and it takes us 15 minutes to drive to school, what time will we arrive at school?’)
  • Practising times tables in the car on the way to or home from school
  • Using fractions and measuring capacity in the kitchen (e.g. using measuring cups to follow a recipe)

From the Year 5 Team

In Mathematics this semester, our students will be assessed on their ability to calculate the area and perimeter of rectangles and the volume of regular 3D shapes using the appropriate units of cm/m/km, cm2/m2/km2 and cm3/m3.

Area of a Rectangle:

Further assessments will include solving problems using all four operations (+, -, x, ÷), with a strong focus on division.

We will also be monitoring students’ understanding of chance and probability concepts including expressing the probability of outcomes using mathematical language and fractions.

From the Year 6 Team

This term in Maths, Year 6 students are working on a range of mathematical concepts including;

  • Working on solving problems involving all four operations including the use of brackets and order of operations.
  • How to compare fractions, locate and represent them on a number line and solve problems with them involving addition and subtraction.
  • Adding and subtracting decimals and use estimation to round and check the reasonableness of their answers.
  • How multiply and divide decimals by powers of ten and other whole numbers. They are investigating and calculating percentage of discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items.
  • Interpreting and use timetables
  • Constructing simple prisms and pyramids.
  • Connecting decimal representations to the metric system and convert between common metric units
  • Investigating combinations of translations, reflections and rotations.
  • Interpreting and compare a range of data displays including side-by-side column graphs.

Students are practicing these concepts in a range of activities including warm ups, lessons, hands on practise and rotational games and activities

Deputy Principal’s News

As I walk around through the school and see the work the children are doing I am full of pride. Our school is filled with positive attitudes and genuine enthusiasm for learning. They know what they are learning, why they are learning it, and how they can make it better.

Safely walking to and from school.

Safety of our children is paramount. Though they may feel confident walking to and from school, we need to be vigilant and actively supervise children walking near roads and driveways. Even children who seem to know all the road safety rules won’t necessarily remember to follow them.

Prep interviews are now happening. This morning I met young Noa, who is keen and ready for prep next year.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes. Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

This term students are working towards a giant slide and fairy floss as part of a day of exciting events and activities.

Weeks 7-8 Term 3:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Weeks 7-8: I am a Learner when I am on time for school and class.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CHILD TO ARRIVE AT SCHOOL ON TIME?

There are many benefits your child will gain from arriving on time to school and class.

Did you know?

  • The likelihood of success in learning is strongly linked to strong participation in school programs which is linked to arriving on time.
  • It is very important for children to develop habits of arriving on time at an early age, beginning from the time they start school.

Some Gains for Your Child

Arriving on Time for School and Class:

  • Makes sure that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day when they are most alert.
  • Early morning learning activity is often reading or writing; your child can lose so many opportunities to learn these critical life skills.
  • Helps your child to learn about routines and commitment.
  • Gives your child time to greet their friends before class and this can reduce the possibility of disruptions in the classroom.
  • Class disruption can make your child feel uncomfortable and can upset other children.
  • Arriving on time every day makes children feel good about themselves

HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL ON TIME?

Are these some reasons why your child does not get to school on time?

  • Your child won’t go to bed at night or get out of bed in the morning
  • Your child can’t find their clothes, books, homework, school bag….
  • The school lunches are not ready
  • Homework’s not done
  • Your child is slow to eat breakfast
  • Your child is watching TV late at night or when they should be getting ready for school
  • It’s your child’s or someone else’s birthday
  • There is a test or presentation at school today
  • Your child is screaming or not letting go of you.

Things to Try

Here are some suggestions based on setting regular routines:

  • Have a set time to go to bed
  • Have a set time to be out of bed
  • Have uniform and school bag ready the night before
  • Make lunches the night before
  • Have set time for starting and ending breakfast.
  • Set a time each day for homework. Try straight after school with the TV off so your child can relax for the rest of the night and have a reward when finished.
  • Turn the TV on for set times and only if appropriate.
  • Be firm that children must go to school.
  • Give your child lots of positive encouragement and acknowledge they are organized and get to school on time.
  • Be firm; a birthday does not equal a holiday.
  • On arrival, look for some of your child’s friends and encourage your child to go and play with their friends.
  • Once settled leave quickly.

REGULAR ROUTINES ARE IMPORTANT

HPE News

Last Saturday 27 Kokoda Kids crossed the finished line of the Brisbane Kokoda Challenge. A big achievement to not only finish the event but to also commit to the training that began in February.

Here are some amazing statistics:

There have been 14 training hikes since February.

For the students who trained for the 30km event and made it to training for everyone, they hiked close to 280km!

For those that completed the 18km challenge they weren’t far behind with around 250km!

Add the challenge to that and their total hiked kilometers are approx. 310km and 270km, that’s an average of about 20km each hike!

In another way, the 18km students hiked from Edens Landing to Maryborough QLD.

The 30km students to Hervey Bay QLD.

While these statistics are incredible, the most amazing aspect of their journey was the support each Kokoda kid had for each other during the times when one of their mates was struggling with fatigue. The gentle hand on their back and words of encouragement to get them up that next hill was often enough to have them continue their journey.

Thankyou to everyone who helped during the hikes your time and support was invaluable. Look forward to seeing many of you in 2023!

Happy hiking.
Mr. Hopkinson.

Community News

Queensland Road Safety Week is approaching and we are asking all Queenslanders to join us in support of this week. It is a chance for all of us to be involved in making our roads safer, including those around our schools, especially for our kids. In 2022, we’re celebrating the many ways Queenslanders keep our roads safe every day.

This year’s theme is ‘everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe’.

We’re all getting busier and often multi-task to get through the day, even when using the road. It is especially important to be road safe around our schools and remind parents to:

  • Put Road Safety first every day
  • Follow school zone speed limits
  • Obey parking signage, especially in drop off and pick up zones
  • Never double park
  • Obey the directions of school crossing supervisors at all times.

Some suggested messages to share:

  • We support Road Safety Week
  • We pledge to put Road Safety first
  • Safer Queensland roads are our top priority
  • Road Safety is everyone’s responsibility, so let’s make sure everyone gets home safely

Communities, schools, sporting groups and workplaces are encouraged to support the week through sharing information or by simply promoting Queensland Road Safety Week via electronic VMS’s, school newsletters, letters to parents, website and social media reminding parents the importance of being road safe around schools.

There are several road safety week resources to help raise road safety awareness in your school community, which you may wish to print and use during class time, or send on electronically to parents for children to use at home.
