HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

It is hard to believe we have just passed 100 days of schooling in 2022! This is a big milestone for our Prep students for their first 100 days of Prep. It is also a time for all families to reflect on your child’s progress at school over the first 100 days. I ask parents to consider attendance, behaviour, uniform, effort and academic results. As school staff we reflect and then make adjustments accordingly, I encourage families to do the same. The recent report card is a good start, I will also be sending out further data sets to those families of parents who require additional support.

100 day celebrations- Prep and their year 6 buddies!

Some of our recent events- Loganlea SHS extension days, Level 2 strings workshops, Life education sessions, Prep transitions.

Students attended a two day intensive String workshop at Crestmead State School, developing their skills on their instrument. They played a range of pieces including Russian March, Lament, Little Belle's Waltz, Cowboy Lane, Fairytale Suite, Baby Shark and Backstreet Boogey. There were over 70 students at the workshop and it was a fantastic opportunity to join with students from other schools to create music together.

Please note- Ekka Show Day Public Holiday, a reminder that Monday 8 August is the City of Logan's Ekka Show Day Public Holiday. School closed.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 2. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture.

School events Coming up- Life education continues, Prep Transitions, Kokoda Challenge, Jeans for Genes day, P&C meeting, Year 5 Science incursion, school MUSICAL, Principal Tour, Good mental health rocks workshop.

Remaining 2022 ELSS events- Magic of Music Concert, Colour Run and Carols.

Reminders-

  • FINAL WEEK*** 2022 school opinion survey is being emailed from The Department of Education. We use this survey, P&C meetings and our end of year survey to shape our work and planning for the school’s future. Make sure you have your say, it is vital that your voice is heard as we are partners in learning.

  • Please focus on students arriving to school on time and not leaving early as these impacts learning for your child and all students in the class.
  • Meeting with any ELSS staff member is supported by appointments. If you wish to meet with a teacher, please contact them directly. If you wish to meet with a member of the Administration team, please contact office during business hours or email office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au
  • Uniform reminder notes will be sent home to families of students who are still out of uniform. We have worked closely with the P&C to build a strong focus on pride and unity through our uniform. We welcome any family to discuss financial hardship if this is a barrier to full school uniform. We are happy to support and help. We are partner in learning.
  • Look out for an end of term Pizza and Disco for students who have an attendance rate 95% or above and 0 major behaviour incidents in this term. Reminder to stay home if sick or any symptoms.
  • Whole school attendance in 2022 is still below average at 89%. Shout out to Year 4 who are leading the way. Our school goal is 93%. I would encourage everyone in the school community to promote regular attendance at school. Whilst I acknowledge the difficult time at present with COVID and flu, students should seek to maximise their attendance at school when they are feeling healthy and well.

Prep

This term we have celebrated 100 days of prep – a very special day for our youngest – and now 100 days brightest! CC visited along with Mr Curran. The year 6 students then helped their buddies with a variety of activities. Our Adopt -a- cop Mitch also visited during the activities with the senior students.

This term in English, the preps are learning to identifying and use rhyming words in songs and sentences.

This term in maths, the preps are learning to recognise teen numbers and develop their 1:1 correspondence.

Next year preps have also been visiting – some during the interview, and others when our local Kindy classes come to join in our classes and then explore our school. Mr Tuckett got to read his favourite story “Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy” to some of the Kindy Kids – which they all thoroughly enjoyed.

Hints for Parents – Sleep and relaxation

We strive to making the connections between home and school to help our children to achieve their best. At Edens Landing we use the Zones of regulation to have children recognise and label their feelings, and help them develop tools to have them in the Green Calm, Learning Zone so they can focus on learning.

One of the triggers that may cause stress for us all is the lack of sleep; or the ability to be able to relax in order to sleep at night. For some great information please follow the link:

https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/parenting-in-pictures/sleep-relaxation

Year 1

This Term in English the children will be assessed on writing sentences about a character, setting and event for a story. Over the course of the term they will visit different worlds (settings) to create their own character and event. They will demonstrate their ability to write sentences that contain capital letters, ending punctuation and spelling tricky words correctly. They will have the opportunity to experiment with the use of adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and interesting words to make the story more entertaining for the reader. Here are some of the worlds we have visited so far!

Year 2 English Assessment

Students will create a new narrative featuring a familiar animal character, Paddington Bear with an image that matches the text. Students will begin by planning their imaginative narrative using a story map or picture sequence to support the development of the writing process. Students will then draft their imaginative narrative following a narrative text structure:

  • Orientation – who (characters), when, where (setting)
  • Complication/problem
  • Resolution

Students will have access to:

  • bump it up wall samples and co constructed success criteria
  • learning walls created throughout the unit
  • tricky words
  • conferencing with teacher

Students will then be given the opportunity to edit their work for spelling, punctuation and text structure etc. Finally, students will create an image that reflects their imaginative story.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Weeks 5-6 Term 3:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Kokoda

Last Saturday our Kokoda Team showed how far they’ve come by hiking either 18Km or 30Km in preparation for their Kokoda Challenge events on the 13th of August.

At 6:15am , they were waiting at a cold ELSS carpark to head out to hike the steep hills of D’Aguilar National Park to complete their final training session. It was a tough day with a few spills on the way but the rugged and at times slippery terrain wasn’t enough to stop our determined and resilient kids to finish their hike in 9 hours and 23 minutes.

A highlight of the day was the mateship shown to help support each other during times of doubt and fatigue. Hands on the back of each other’s packs and words of encouragement were evident as they inched their way forward to reach their goals.

We’re all looking forward to crossing the finish line on the big day as it has been a long journey after the event was postponed for a couple of months to due to extreme weather conditions. The commitment, determination, and resilience our students have shown is something we can all be proud of.

Well done Kokoda Kids!

Sporting Achievement Shout Outs

Congratulations to Leonard who successfully participated in Queensland State Combined Karate Tournament during the holidays and won a gold medal in category Kata. Well done Leonard!

Our school would love to hear about any sporting achievements your child/ren have made. It could be as simple as competing at a ballet performance, player of the match, a new personal best or an action shot playing a game. We are always looking to celebrate student success. Please send photo and a short comment of their achievement to kodon30@eq.edu.au.

Social Work Support Services

Social Work Support Services – here to support your family

We’ve reached the halfway point of the term and again it feels like “where on earth has that gone”?

I’m with you – life is so crazy busy these days and the pace only seems to be quickening.

So how do we continue to raise our family’s and feel hopeful in the midst of the many competing pressures and demands?

How can we maintain the pace and show up in meaningful ways with our kids, family and community?

How can we take care of ourselves while taking care of others at the same time?

The answer can’t be written in one simple sentence but the conversation can continue and we can be part of it.

I’m here at ELSS every Wednesday to Friday and if you would like to come and have a chat about how things are going for you, please don’t hesitate to call the office and make a time.

Take care,
Andrew Rienecker – Social Worker

Tuckshop News

SUSHI IS BACK!!!

Sushi is now on a Wednesday and our first Sushi Day is 17 August 2022. We will start with weekly ordering but may have to move to fortnightly or monthly if the orders are low and minimum order numbers are not met.

All orders are to be placed on Flexischools by Tuesday 16 August, 12 noon. As the Sushi is ordered from an outside company, orders cannot be cancelled after 12 noon Tuesday, as the order is placed just after the cut off time. If the minimum order is not reached, any orders placed will be cancelled.

If you order Sushi for your child/ren and they are absent from school on the day, please contact the tuckshop (0482 175 646) to arrange collection. The Sushi orders can be kept until Thursday if your child is away on the Wednesday but after Thursday if they are not collected, they will be disposed of.

Information and reminders will be on our Facebook page regularly about Sushi Wednesday.

Children absent from school

If you have ordered tuckshop for your child and they are not attending school on that day, PLEASE call the tuckshop DIRECTLY on 0482 175 646 by 8.30 am to have their order cancelled. PLEASE DO NOT contact the office staff to ask them to pass on a message to the tuckshop. PLEASE DO NOT leave a message on the absentee line/email that you want tuckshop cancelled. If you do not contact the TUCKSHOP by 8.30 am your order will stand and will not be cancelled.

If your child’s order has been cancelled you will have to reorder when you want them to have tuckshop, there is no ability to hold over orders.

Tuckshop relies on volunteers to run. If we do not have the volunteer base to carry out daily tuckshop tasks, then menu items have to be streamlined to accommodate the amount of help we have. There are no special skills required to help in the tuckshop. Some of the jobs you may be asked to do are, make sandwiches/wraps, process bags, help pack food into bags and class tubs, wash up, staple bags, filling fridges and freezers. This list is not exhaustive but gives you an idea of what sort of things you might be asked to do to help. If you think you can help on a regular basis, please contact the tuckshop. The only requirement from the school is you complete the mandatory training in the office prior to starting to help. Anyone other than the parents of a child ie grandparents, aunts/uncles must apply for and have Working with Children (Blue) card before starting.

If you have not signed up for Flexischools or need help registering please pop up to the tuckshop on Wednesday morning between 8:30 am – 9:00 am for us to help you set Flexischools up or email the tuckshop at tuckshop@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au or message the P&C Facebook page from the link below.
