Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2022

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

It’s time to celebrate our wonderful school-

BUSHDANCE-A huge community event of over 1000 members of the Edens Landing State School partners. Staff, Student and families joined together to celebrate our culture and connection. Great dancing to all the families.

Negative behaviour- Negative behaviour recorded in One School has reduced by over 50% from last year. Congratulations to students who are making good choices and showing more kindness to others. This means we are successful as partners in learning and school/home has high expectations for EVERY student.

PBL demonstration school- ELSS was featured across the state for our amazing culture and commitment to positive relationships between staff and students. We are making a difference in the learning and future options for our students. Please see a state-wide video featuring our great school-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIFSH_5mnSA

STAR of the school- 29 students from across the school were celebrated for their positive character to others and their learning.

Student of the Week- Across term 2, nearly 300 students were celebrated for their attitude and effort for our expectations of Safe, Respect and a Learner.

Some of our recent events- Strings concert, BUSHDANCE + 25-year celebration. P&C meeting, Regional music camp, Star of the school, REWARDS day.

Coming up- NAIDOC week, Kokoda Challenge,

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 1. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture. Each fortnight I will share improvement strategies that we have actioned. An action for Culture is giving tokens for the correct behaviour to students when staff see it. The research outlined that when students are rewarded in the moment for positive behaviour, it can become a habit and develop a positive culture. Our students are celebrating their positive behaviour on REWARDS day. The tokens are free and frequent when staff catch students in the act of the positive behaviour that meets our expectations of SAFE, RESPECTFUL, LEARNER.

For the majority of our families, a huge thanks for role modelling respect by sending their child/ren to school in full school uniform (outlined in student code of conduct on website), on time, ready to learn. I urge all families to keep toys, coloured jackets and jewellery at home. Reminder that staff will direct students to put these items in their bags straight away- Pokémon cards, poppers, Beyblades, plush toys, necklaces, bracelet and multi coloured jackets (only school jacket or plain navy blue will do!). The school takes no responsibility for the loss of these items at school as they are not part of our uniform or resources. If you have financial hardship with school uniform, we are always ready to assist.

Each day I am reminded of our great school and community as I spend time in classroom seeing students connected to their teacher and the learning. Let continue to work TOGETHER as partners in learning for every student to ‘SOAR TO SUCCESS’

Thank you for your support to live out our mission, vision and expectations-

Mission – Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance

Vision – Positive Relationships and High Expectations for EVERY student succeeding.

Expectations – Safe, Respectful, Learner

Motto- Soar to Success

Have a safe, happy and healthy school holiday!

Yours in Education

Principal.

Edens Landing Police Beat

Bush Dance

We had 4 sworn officers including dog squad, 22 recruits, 1 Police Dog, and 1 PLO (cultural unit officer).

There were different vehicles on display including the Mobile Police Beat which is fully powered by solar and rechargeable battery, the MPB is a fully functional police station on wheels.

We had a dress up like a police officer station, and running the breath testing demonstration for the kids and also bullet proof vests on display.

We don’t often have many opportunities to be able to show off some of our equipment and capabilities so was a great way to let the community have an inside look to what we do and foster growing relationships with the people who we serve.

Term 2 has certainly gone by quickly. I would like to wish all of our families a happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back safe next term.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

BUSH DANCE Thank you!

It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying themselves at our 25th Anniversary Bush Dance. Thanks to the generous donations from our staff and families. This money will go a long way to supporting the students of ELSS.

End of term celebration:

Your children and their teachers have been working hard to learn new and exciting things this term. Here are some of the Term celebrations from Years 3 to 6 and the Specialists.

From the Year 3 Team - Year 3 having fun learning.

3R: The class loved going outside to find words relating to our senses: see, hear, and touch when we were writing a poem about the playground.

3V: In Maths, we enjoyed making fraction strips to explore halves, quarters and eighths. We also went outside to explore symmetry in the environment. Students loved the realisation that we are symmetrical.

3D: The class enjoyed cooking and eating popcorn to practise using our five senses. We also enjoyed a pretend trip to the beach to observe what we could see, hear, and feel. This helped us to write a sensory poem about the beach.

3S: There is something fun in playing a barrier game with a friend. You have to identify a target by following directions-and you learn some great mapping skills along the way.

From the Year 4 Team

Year 4s had an opportunity to perform “How to Make Pancakes”. They were nervous, but once they got into their role, it was so much fun for them! Earning through doing is a huge part of our teaching at Edens Landing State School and students love this approach.

From the Year 5 Team

Year 5 Switch on to Science!

Does temperature affect the viscosity of liquids?

Our Year 5 students have been busy developing their science skills and working in groups to design their own scientific investigations. Together they have planned their experiments, made predictions, organised materials and recorded their observations. Students then wrote their scientific report to explain the science behind the results of their investigation.

From the Year 6 Team

This semester, Year 6 students have been busy learning about the Federation of Australia and how this has formed the way our Government functions today. Students have worked in groups to create a Museum display that contains artefacts relating to Federation and Australia’s Parliament. On Friday, 17th of June, the Year 6 cohort proudly presented their Pop-Up Museum for the rest of the school to enjoy. They happily discussed the various artefacts in their display with the visitors to the museum. The students have thoroughly enjoyed working on this inquiry and being able to learn in a hands-on manner.

From the H.P.E Team

This term we celebrated sports with our Junior and Senior sports days.

From the Japanese teacher, Mrs Sanderson.

On Friday 3rd June, a small group of Year 6 students represented Edens Landing State School in Windaroo Valley State High School's Annual Japanese Speaking Competition. This year is the first time that primary school representatives have been invited to participate. Nastaran Gholomi, Parehuia Hokianga and Te Pairi Te Rangi represented our school proudly and delivered their rehearsed speeches with confidence, receiving many complements from staff and parents in attendance. The competition was adjudicated by Dr Leigh Kirwin, senior Japanese lecturer from Griffith University who awarded first place in our division to our very own Te Pairi. Congratulations to all three students for the effort and enthusiasm you put into this valuable learning experience.

Deputy Principal’s News

What an amazing semester we have had. I love walking through the classrooms to see the progress the children have made so far this year. It is probably most noticeable in prep where they have learned all 42 sounds of our English language to make and spell words, and some are writing sentences!

I have started conducting interviews for next years Prep classes. If you have a young child or know of anyone who is eligible to start Prep next year please contact the office 38260333 to arrange an appointment. Prep is the foundation year of a child’s schooling journey and extremely important that they come prepared to be Learners!

Teachers on Leave

Next term we have 2 of the lower school teachers taking some leave from our school – Miss wells to have a well-deserved holiday, Miss Ambrose to explore a role as a support teacher.

I would like to introduce Miss Shabbir and Miss Obermeier to our school. I am sure our community will give them a warm welcome. Each will give a little more information about themselves in our first newsletter next term.

The holidays are upon us and a great time to continue their progress in seeing themselves as Safe, Respectful and Learners! Our PBL system of explicit teaching of the expectations and rewarding children with targeted praise, along with our token system has definitely made a positive impact on everyone. Parents and caregivers can do something similar at home with rewards charts – for some helpful ideas are on the Raising Children Website

How-to: 5 Steps for Brain-Building Serve and Return

Child-adult relationships that are responsive and attentive—with lots of back and forth interactions—build a strong foundation in a child’s brain for all future learning and development. This is called “ serve and return ,” and it takes two to play! Follow these five steps to practice serve and return with your child:

  1. Notice the serve and share the child's focus of attention.
  2. Return the serve by supporting and encouraging.
  3. Give it a name!
  4. Take turns…and wait. Keep the interaction going back and forth.
  5. Practice endings and beginnings.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 1-2 Term 3:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 1-2: The first two week of Term 3 will see teachers reminding students about maximising learning opportunities. This will be including the following two school rules.
