Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

Edens Landing State School Spirit is alive and well throughout the school. From sport, arts, learning and engagement, students are showing Safe, Respectful and Learner positive behaviours. We are receiving positive feedback from the community and continue to have new enrolments from the area. Thank you to everyone who plays their part to make this a great school. I look forward to coming together for the BUSHDANCE on Friday June 17.

Some of our recent events- Reconciliation week, State-wide soccer cup, Junior Sports Day, u8’s Day, Music excellence strings, Senior Sports Day, Japanese speaking competition. These photos display to engaged, inspired and empowered learning opportunities at ELSS.

Coming up- Strings concert, BUSHDANCE + 25-year celebration. Kokoda Challenge, P&C meeting, Regional music camp, Star of the school, REWARDS day.

COVID-19. –We still need to be vigilant. Any students with symptoms are to be sent home with a RAT. Please respect our office staff as they communicate with families during this difficult time.

We have celebrated student achievement at parade, daily staff acknowledge positive student behaviours with tokens and direct praise. Let’s not forget the 1000’s of high fives and thumbs up to students for encouragement. We have also given consequences and re-teaching to a small number of students who are still yet to display SAFE and RESPECTFUL behaviour. We do not tolerate physical or verbal misconduct.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 1. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture. Each fortnight I will share improvement strategies that we have actioned. An action for Curriculum Access is the use and development of the 3rd teacher. Researcher Lyn Sharratt outlines the classroom space and think about that learning environment as the third teacher. The first teacher is of course the parent, the second teacher is the teacher in the classroom, but the third teacher is that learning space and how is that learning space is designed to support the students in the classroom. And is it really a space that students own as well as the teacher. At ELSS we are exploring how EVERY student can use the 3rd teacher to support teaching and learning with the goal of creating assessment literate learners.

For the majority of our families, a huge thanks for role modelling respect by sending their child/ren to school in full school uniform (outlined in student code of conduct on website), on time, ready to learn. I urge all families to keep toys, coloured jackets and jewellery at home. Reminder that staff will direct students to put these items in their bags straight away- Pokémon cards, poppers, Beyblades, plush toys, necklaces, bracelet and multi coloured jackets (only school jacket or plain navy blue will do!). The school takes no responsibility for the loss of these items at school as they are not part of our uniform or resources. If you have financial hardship with school uniform, we are always ready to assist.

Staff Learning Activities – ELSS staff are committed to BETTER and are active in Professional Learning Teams- English curriculum. Alignment to goal of 75% of students achieving C or above in English for semester 1&2. Planning. Moderation. Cross school moderation. School Improvement with Sharratt 14 parameters. Warm Up PD. Clarity Club. Watching others Work. Inclusive teaching of reading (ITOR). Zone of Regulation sharing. YXL Pedagogy PD. Oral Language

Celebrations- Each term ELSS conducts an Evacuation drill and Lockdown drill. Our staff and students are respectful and complete these risk management activities successfully. This ensures everyone is familiar and knows their job in the event these are live.

A reminder below for all of us-

BUSH DANCE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

Please mark Friday June 17 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance.

Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Thank you to the staff and families who have already donated chocolates for this much-loved stall. We are asking for families to donate Chocolates (any size or shape is great) for the Student Council Lob-A-Choc stall and baked goods for our cake and coffee stall. If you missed the letters which were sent home soon, please ask your child’s teacher for details.

From the Year 3 Team:

Mathematics Assessment Term 2

The teachers and students have enjoyed many maths lessons and activities this term. They have worked a lot around numbers to 1000, and sometimes going beyond these numbers-just for fun! The class can quickly say if a number is odd or even- a skill they should show by the end of the year! Well done 3s!

The assessment coming up will just focus on the learning they have done for example: Calculations like addition and subtraction with a heavier emphasis on multiplication). They will need to calculate and explain how they reached their answer. Neatness on writing their digits is encouraged as well as learning the skill of checking their work for the correct answer.

You can assist your child with practicing some multiplication tables: the x2, x5, x10 are a good place to start for these. Singing them can be an option too! Whatever way your child learns best for this is necessary and important.

From the Year 4 Team:

Mathematics Assessment Term 2

In Mathematics this term, students have been learning and applying Year 4 number, algebra and measurement concepts. Students have been working on reading, writing and partitioning numbers up to the tens of thousands and exploring number sequences. They have also been using appropriate strategies to answer multiplication and division facts and worded problems.

Throughout the term, they have been finding unknown quantities in addition and subtraction number sentences and investigating fractions on number lines, mixed numbers and equivalent fractions.

In measurement, students learned how to identify and compare acute, obtuse and right angles as well as measuring the length and comparing the area and volume of objects and spaces.

From the Year 5 Team:

Mathematics Assessment Term 2

In year 5 Mathematics this term, students have been assessed on our major number units of factors and multiples, decimal place value, inverse operations and missing addends. We have also assessed our students understanding of angles and how to measure them, and 2 Dimensional shapes, through maths groups activities.

From the Year 6 Team:

In Maths this Term Year 6 have been expanding their knowledge of numbers by learning triangular numbers and the formula to work these out. They have worked on solving problems using the relationship between angles and working on their understanding of vertically opposite angles. They have been working with fractions and decimals and making connections when converting measurements.

From the Specialist Team:

Japanese

This semester, Year 5 students will be assessed on their ability to locate specific information in a spoken text and identify behaviours and values associated with Japanese society. They will share information about their personal identity in a short, spoken self-introduction.

Year 6 students will also be required to locate specific information from a familiar text (postcard) Students will apply their knowledge of language patterns relating to location (where), participants (who) and means (how), to answer questions about her movements and construct some simple sentences about her plans for the following week. Students will also be asked to demonstrate their growing knowledge of hiragana text

Deputy Principal’s News

Asking the right questions to find out how our children are going at school can be tricky.

“How was your day?” It’s a question we often get a very mediocre “mmm OK” answer to..

How do we really know what our children are experiencing during the day – both academically and socially? What questions can we ask to find out – without being too intrusive.

Sometimes asking more specific questions helps children zone in on the positive interactions and learnings they have experienced throughout the day

Here are some alternatives to explore –

Raising Children -

  • What’s the news from school today?
  • What was fun?
  • What did you like best at school today

https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/school-learning/school-homework-tips/talking-about-school

Scholastic Books -

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.
  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
  • Did any of your classmates do anything funny?

https://www.scholastic.com/parents/school-success/10-questions-to-ask-your-child-about-his-day-school.html

A Parenting blog -

  • What games did you play at recess?
  • What was the funniest thing that happened today?
  • What was the nicest thing you did for someone else?

Under 8’s celebrations

This week our Prep-Year 2 children had an amazing time celebrating Under 8’s day. The students explored the theme ‘Play in a changing world’. Students were enthusiastic to participate in many fun activities and had a wonderful time playing and creating with their peers.

Prep

This term in Prep our maths we have been counting to ten and connection numerals to quantities in number. We have also been comparing capacity of different containers and matching activities to days of the week.

Year 1

In Mathematics this term, Year 1’s have been learning to measure and order objects based on length and capacity using informal units. Students are required to measure accurately, order objects and explain their choice of informal units.

Year 2 - Term 2 - Mathematic Concepts we are learning -

  • Investigate number sequences, initially those increasing and decreasing by twos, threes, fives and tens from any starting point, then moving to other sequences up to at least 500.
  • Group, partition and rearrange collections up to 500 in hundreds, tens and ones to facilitate more efficient counting. Eg.

  • Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies.
  • Explore the connection between addition and subtraction up to 100 including missing addends.
  • Describe patterns with numbers and identify missing elements.
  • Using a calendar to identify dates, months and seasons.
  • Area using informal units
  • Recognising two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional object
  • Representing chance

Sporting Achievement Shout Outs

Our school would love to hear about any sporting achievements your child/ren have made. It could be as simple as competing at a ballet performance, player of the match, a new personal best or an action shot playing a game. We are always looking to celebrate student success. Please send photo and a short comment of their achievement to kodon30@eq.edu.au.

Hats

Over the course of the year, lessons will be held on the oval. It is essential that your child/ren has a suitable school hat for all lessons. PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 9-10 Term 2:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 9: Last week of I am safe when I use Talk, Walk, Report to solve problems.

In week 9 teachers will unpack the final part of Talk, Walk, Report with students.

Report

Speak to the teacher on duty

Look confident

Bystanders should be upstanders and support and report.

Week 10: Last week of I am safe when I play school-approved games.

In week 10, teachers will be reviewing the correct area in which to play and the games which are appropriate for school situations.
