The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 1. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture. Each fortnight I will share improvement strategies that we have actioned. An action for Curriculum Access is English and Mathematic warm ups across the school. Every day, our teachers lead students in revision of literacy and numeracy concepts in warm up sessions of up to 15 minutes. The purpose of warm ups is to:

  • consolidate previously taught skills
  • automatise learning so that the answer is known within the click of a finger, without time spent thinking
  • move learning into long-term memory so that it is retrievable in the future, not forgotten

Warm ups cater for the range of students in the class with different parts the focus for different students

Today a READER, tomorrow a LEADER! This statement makes clear the importance of reading and students discovering a love for reading is very important. Student Council Fundraiser

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Children’s Cancer Foundation on Friday May 20. It was wonderful to see our crew of pirates raising awareness and much needed funds for childhood brain cancer research. Our school community raised $482.20. Thank you.

Our second fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 17. If you are able to help us on our stall on the night, please let the office know.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2022!

Please mark Friday June 17 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Thank you to the staff and families who have already donated chocolates for this much-loved stall. We are asking for families to donate Chocolates (any size or shape is great) for the Student Council Lob-A-Choc stall and baked goods for our cake and coffee stall. If you missed the letters which were sent home soon, please ask your child’s teacher for details.

From the Year 3 Team:

English Assessment

This term the year 3s have studied Poetry. They have giggled and appreciated the fun play on words in poems. They have heard the variety of moods that are in the poems we have read/been read to.

They have two assessments to complete for English:

  1. Poem Bubbles Students will read this to their teacher and then answer some multiple choice and sentence responses about the poem to demonstrate their decoding and comprehension skills.
  2. Write a poem using their senses about the school garden. Students will use the knowledge they have gained over the course of the term, including using good describing words, to write their own sensory poem in verse form.

How can you support your child?

  • Reading lots of interesting poems would encourage them to understand the form that a poem has- and how it is different to a narrative
  • Name some plants, etc you would find in a garden and practice describing -what they look like, how they smell, and how they would feel.
  • Why not visit your own back garden or go and explore someone else’s!

From the Year 4 Team:

In English this term we have been learning how to write a procedure. We have been reading different procedural texts to understand that there are various types of procedures. We have also been exposed to ‘real world’ experiences to aid us in our writing, for example, cooking in the kitchen.

In week 4, students made chocolate crackles and week 6 they made scrumptious pancakes. These experiences will help students when writing their own procedures at the end of the term. We all had so much fun!

From the Year 5 Team:

Year 5 are doing two English assessments this term. The first is our written Scientific Report. Students will be conducting an investigation into a property of liquid and explaining what they have learnt about the process. They will be assessed on their understanding of the structure and language features of this report, along with their spelling, grammar, punctuation and editing skills.

Our second assessment is a reading comprehension task. Students will be reading a narrative passage and answering 'Right There', 'Think and Search' and 'Author and Me' questions to show their understanding of the events, characters, setting and author's intent of the text.

From the Year 6 Team:

This term, Year 6 are learning to write a magazine article that includes an image and a catchy headline to capture an audience’s attention. The students will research about a topic of their choice and then present a point of view in their magazine article. Each child's article will then be compiled into a class magazine.

From the Specialist Team:

The Arts

Year 1: Students will create a painting of a crazy critter or marvellous machine using a number of 2 Dimensional shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, circle, oval)

Year 2: Students describe what happens in drama they make, perform and view identifying some elements of drama (role, space, voice, movement/action, facial expression)

Year 3: Students will design and create a hand puppet using a number of different paper craft techniques they have learnt.

Year 4: Students compare a number of commercials and identify the persuasive techniques used in those advertisements and explain why they are persuasive referring to images, sound, text, special effects and music.

Deputy Principal’s News

We are more than halfway through the term and it is amazing to see how much the children have learned so far this year. For our younger students the greatest learning is around regulating big feelings – such as frustration, anxiety and excitement. At Edens Landing SS we use the Zones of Regulation to help our children develop the language and skills to help them be in the Green – Learning Zone. As partners in education I encourage families to use the Zones at home. These links may help.

Junior Sports and Under 8’s activity day

This coming week is going to be busy – we have decided to make our Junior Sports Day a fun day by finishing with Under 8’s activities. Parents and sibling s are welcome to participate.

From the classrooms

Prep

This term for English in prep, students are describing animals using words, phrases and sentences. They are also reading CVC words and familiar words and phrases.

Year 1

This term Year 1 students are writing a retell of a familiar story. They will sequence their ideas and write about the beginning, middle and end of the story. Students will also share a preference for a character with a reason.

Year 2

Task:

To use factual language features and informative text structures to create a multimodal information report about a chosen animal that includes an image that supports the meaning of the written text.

Include:

  • a title
  • headings to organise the information (classification, appearance, habitat, diet, reproduction)
  • factual information about the topic
  • noun groups to add detail
  • topic-specific vocabulary
  • simple sentences and compound sentences using co-ordinating conjunctions to connect ideas.

To engage the children in their learning, the Geckoes wildlife incursion and chicken egg hatching has been very successful.

Helping children to cope with stressful world news.

It is hard to avoid children being exposed to the news of traumatic events from around the world. The ABC have an article to help parents with ways to help children cope with and process disaster-related news coverage

  1. Do limit viewing time, but don't try to keep it a secret
  2. Be with them when they are seeing or reading stories
  3. Remind them good things happen too
  4. Provide comfort and affection
  5. Distract them with a game or new activity

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 5 - 6 Term 2:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 7 & 8: I am safe when I use Talk, Walk, Report to solve problems.

Over three weeks, teachers will unpack each part of Talk, Walk, Report with students.

Talk Friendly

Speak clearly and calmly
Use eye contact
Say “Stop it, please.”

Talk Firmly

Speak clearly
Say “STOP! I don’t like it.”
Use confident body language and an assertive voice
Restate, I said …
Say, “If you don't stop, I am reporting it to the teacher.”

Walk Away

Walk away confidently
Stand tall, head high
Walk towards an adult on duty

Report

Speak to the teacher on duty
Look confident
Bystanders should be upstanders and support and report.
