HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

Jingeri is the local Yugambeh language word for greeting. Edens Landing State School is a great place to learn and play! Our school continues to be a busy hive of activity as we move to the middle of term 2. COVID continues to impact staffing as we continue to deliver teaching and learning. Student absences are impacted however we all must remain focused on the COVID safe practices. School Principals continue to provide a snapshot of positive cases and close contacts to the Department of Education. A reminder to stay at home if unwell or with symptoms, particularly as we head into the cooler months.

Learning starts at 8.50am. There is a concerning trend of students arriving late. I ask all families to address this and ensure students are on time. Arriving late impacts learning time, daily notices and class greeting with routines and messages.

Thanks to the P&C for organisation of the mother day stall. We had a great connection from families to purchase gifts and involvement in the raffle. Huge thanks for everyone working together to make our school great.

Hands on learning is an element of our Pedagogical approach to Teaching and Learning. A great example is year 5 planting sweet corn. They are exploring time, prediction and stages of growth.

NAPLAN, Year 6 camp, Lockdown drill, Hearing tests and art therapy are a few of the school activities over the last 2 weeks. Another reminder for our P&C meeting, Monday 5.15pm on the 16th of May. Your feedback during these meetings is highly valued.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 1. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture. Each fortnight I will share improvement strategies that we have actioned. An action for Curriculum Access is the development of the 3rd teacher in every classroom. The 3rd teacher is the physical walls in the classroom that are used to display teaching and learning. Our staff are using learning walls, Bump it up walls, anchor charts and other visuals to support EVERY student to access the curriculum and learning. You can ask your child about their learning walls and Bump it up walls to hear more.

Celebrations-

We have celebrated student effort and attitude to many different aspects of development. From student of the week, safe/respectful/learners, attendance, positive behaviour, sporting achievements, academic, kindness and having a growth mindset are just a few. Congratulations to those students but also congratulations must go to the families that support schooling, trust the ELSS processes and prioritise education.

It’s that time of the year again to celebrate the people committed to educating your child/ren and nominate staff for ELSS 2022 Qld College of Teachers Awards. The link is below, followed by an outline on both teaching and non-teaching awards with categories.

Deputy Principal’s News

The wet weather has not dampened the enthusiasm of our wonderful staff and students. NAPLAN is well underway and everyone is working hard to make the experience a great one for our Year 3 and Year 5 students.

Student Council Fundraiser

This Term our enthusiastic student council will host two fundraisers.

The first is for the Children’s Cancer Foundation on Friday May 20. They are inviting students to dress up like a pirate, bring their treasure (gold coin donation) and raise money for kids’ brain cancer research. Pirate Day is a fun way to raise awareness and much needed funds for childhood brain cancer research.

Pirate Day was established by the Colgan Family to support childhood brain cancer research following the diagnosis of their son Conor when he was 5 years-old. In 2022, Pirate Day will be managed by The Kids’ Cancer Project with funds raised going towards research into finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood brain cancer.

Dress up and donate a Gold Coin to help research for Kids’ Cancer!

Our second fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 17. We will send more information home closer to the date requesting donations of chocolates for this much-loved stall.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2022

Please mark Friday June 17 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Thank you to the staff and families who have already donated chocolates for this much-loved stall. We are asking for families to donate Chocolates (any size or shape is great) for the Student Council Lob-A-Choc stall and baked goods for our cake and coffee stall. If you missed the letters which were sent home soon, please ask your child’s teacher for details.

From the Year 3 Team.

Science assessment Term 2

Year three are studying how the sun rotates around the earth and need to show on their assessment how this changes the length of a shadow. They will show in diagrams how a tree’s shape will change according to the time of the day!

They have used a torch (pretended it was the Sun!) and shone it on a world globe when they were studying the sun. they could practice this at home on a large basket/soccer ball. See how the light from the ”sun” changes as you slowly rotate the ball around the light source!

From the Year 4 Team

In Science this term, students will be exploring the causes and effects of weathering and erosion. With guidance, students will be conducting investigations to identify the natural processes and human activity that causes change to Earth’s surface. They will also reflect on what we can do to slow down or prevent weathering and erosion.

Suggestions on what you can do at home:

  • Go for a walk around the local park or at home and observe where erosion has occurred. Discuss how we could prevent erosion there.
  • Water plants in your garden and watch where the water flows. Discuss where the water flows off to and the material it collects as it flows down. Compare this to watering a patch of grass – where does the water go?
  • At home, at the park or during a car trip, can you spot things that have been put up to prevent erosion?

From the Year 5 Team

Science: In Science this term, we are studying the different states of matter; solids, liquids and gases. In particular, we are discussing how adding or taking away heat helps to change matter from one state to another. Our final task will involve a group investigation around the topic of how temperature affects the viscosity of different liquids. Individually, students will then write a scientific report to explain the results of their investigation and what they have learned. We are greatly enjoying all the experiments that we have been conducting this term.

From the Year 6 Team

In Science this term, students are asked to analyse requirements for the transfer of electricity in a circuit and describe how energy can be transformed from one form to another to generate electricity. They will also use scientific knowledge to assess energy sources selected for a specific purpose.

Do you know what all of these symbols mean?

Learning about our feelings

We all experience being frustrated, confused, anxious and even angry. How we act when we feel these big emotions is what we are teaching our children to do when they feel them. Being mindful of the strategies we personally use to keep calm when we are faced with stressful events is the first step to teaching our children to develop their own set of strategies.

Our teachers have been spending the last few weeks teaching our children of how we look and feel when we are in our different Zones and strategies to calm us if we get frustrated or annoyed. Once children can identify their feelings, we can work on the strategies to get us all back to our Green learning Zone.

Ideas to help your child at home with Gross Motor skills.

Gross motor skill development involves the large muscles in the arms, legs and torso. Gross motor activities are important to everyday physical activities like walking, running, throwing, lifting, kicking, etc. Gross motor abilities also form the basis for fine motor skills and relate to body awareness, reaction speed, balance and strength.

Children who have not developed their core skills will experience difficulties in sitting still, standing for more than a few minutes, balancing while dressing, and fine motor skills such as writing.

Parents can have fun with their children developing and practising gross motor skills at home:

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 5 - 6 Term 2: Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 5 & 6: I am respectful when I use the Work it Out Wheel to solve conflict.

Last year the school installed two large Work it out Wheels for students to use when they are out in the school grounds. This is a great resource in very conspicuous spaces so students can see it as they move around the school. The wheel helps students to think about the choices they can make when they are dealing with problems with peers.

Teachers will take all students to the Work it out Wheels over the next two weeks to explicitly teach how it can be used and to practise with their friends.

Kokoda

Sacrifice, Commitment, Endurance and Mateship are the values instilled by our Diggers in the Kokoda Campaign. They are also the values our Kokoda Kids have called upon to accomplish goals that many people would consider almost impossible to achieve for kids of their age.

It has been an amazing experience to witness the remarkable transformation in our Kokoda Kids. In the last few weeks alone, they have covered 64 kms in three hikes in terrain that will test many fit and experienced adults. In that time, they have pushed on despite fatigue, heat, rain, and leaches to finish their hikes. To achieve their goals, they had to work together to encourage and support each other during times where doubt and fatigue become their enemy.

On Saturday they will continue to challenge themselves when they will head out to D’Aguilar National Park to complete a 30km training hike as they wrap up their preparations before the big event on the 28th of May.

Well done Kokoda Kids!

Sporting Achievement Shout Outs

Our school would love to hear about any sporting achievements your child/ren have made. It could be as simple as competing at a ballet performance, player of the match, a new personal best or an action shot playing a game. We are always looking to celebrate student success. Please send photo and a short comment of their achievement to kodon30@eq.edu.au

Hats

Over the course of the year, lessons will be held on the oval. It is essential that your child/ren has a suitable school hat for all lessons. A note will be issued to students who fail to bring a hat to lessons. If your child/ren is unable to take part in a lesson due to an injury or medical reason, please provide a note.
