Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2022

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to school for Term 2. I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break with family and friends. It is always nice to switch off the alarm and have a more relaxed start to the day. I enjoyed some beach, fishing and family time.

Daily in my classroom walk throughs, I see students engaged in their learning. Our amazing staff have built positive relationships and high expectations for EVERY student to be a learner and make progress in their learning.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS =

GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 1.

The ELSS ANZAC assembly was an amazing event that brought our students, staff and community together. We hosted Blake Wright, Lieutenant of the 25th/49th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment, to address the students was a moving tribute to the current and past service men and women. I am proud to share that our students showed respect during this event.

The below photo shows our school staff, student and families marching together at the Beenleigh ANZAC service. We are partners in learning! Thank you to everyone involved.

Celebrations-

We have celebrated student effort and attitude to many different aspects of development. From student of the week, safe/respectful/learners, attendance, positive behaviour, sporting achievements, academic, kindness and having a growth mindset are just a few. Congratulations to those students but also congratulations must go to the families that support schooling, trust the ELSS processes and prioritise education.

School Uniform and attendance-

Thank you to the amazing families that have prioritised full school uniform and high attendance rates. We still have students out of uniform attending school. From coloured socks and shoes to incorrect shorts, hats and coloured jackets. Girls who wish to wear tights or leggings must wear their shorts/skirt over the top. Please reach out if you are under hardship for support. We are happy to work with you to ensure your child/ren are wearing the correct uniform with pride, displaying self-confidence and a sense of belonging to our wonderful school. Our uniform goal is to have 100% students in full school uniform.

Our whole school attendance percentage is sitting at 88% for term 1. Our target of 93% is based of research for student learning and growth. Every day missed is critical teaching and learning that promotes growth and development. Attendance figures are discussed at Parent/Teacher interviews and appear on report cards.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy term. Students have slipped back into learning seamlessly, and it is encouraging to see so many wide-eyed, happy faces when I enter classrooms.

Student Council Fundraiser

This Term our enthusiastic student council will host two fundraisers.

The first is for the Children’s Cancer Foundation on Friday May 20. They are inviting students to dress up like a pirate, bring their treasure (gold coin donation) and raise money for kids’ brain cancer research. Pirate Day is a fun way to raise awareness and much needed funds for childhood brain cancer research.

Pirate Day was established by the Colgan Family to support childhood brain cancer research following the diagnosis of their son Conor when he was 5 years-old. In 2022, Pirate Day will be managed by The Kids’ Cancer Project with funds raised going towards research into finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood brain cancer.

Dress up and donate a Gold Coin to help research for Kids’ Cancer!

Our second fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 17. We will send more information home closer to the date requesting donations of chocolates for this much-loved stall.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2022!

Please mark Friday June 17 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

We are asking for families to donate Chocolates for the Student Council Lob-A-Choc stall and baked goods for our cake and coffee stall. Please watch out for letters which will be sent home soon.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome to the second term of the school year. As I walk through the classrooms I see smiling students engaged in learning. The teachers work hard to make the learning meaningful and fun.

Though I am enjoying our long weekends I know that many parents are experiencing difficulties in getting their children back into the routine of coming to school – some children ( and parents) are even demonstrating signs of anxiety. The Australian Government supports the Raising Children Network – and there are so many ideas for parents to help their children in the area of anxiety, such as using the STEPLADDER approach --

https://raisingchildren.net.au/toddlers/health-daily-care/mental-health/anxiety-stepladder-approach

They have also developed a free app - for families to use – available on Google Play or App store

From the classrooms

The prep children are learning about the seasons and the weather – In science they are

choosing how to dress appropriately for different types of weather - In English they are learning and practising their sounds and experimenting with how to write sentences.

The year one classes are learning how to read and write facts

Reading O’clock and Half past on an analogue clock. They made clocks to show set times during warm ups.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video .

Go for Gold Day

Students are working hard to achieve enough tokens to attend ‘Go for Gold Day’ which is our rewards day at the end of each term. With so much on offer it is sure to be an amazing day.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 1 - 4 Term 2:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 1: To start the Term, all teachers revisited our school expectations – I am Safe, I am Respectful, I am a Learner.

Week 2: I am safe when I use Talk, Walk, report to resolve problems. Staff revisited the messages deliverd during our say no to bullying day, teaching students strategies to deal with conflict.

Week 3 & 4: Staff will explicitly teach how to use Zones of Regulation to help students know how to regulate their feelings, energy and sensory needs in order to keep themselves and other safe.
