Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2022

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.

HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations

WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS community,

Term 1 of education in 2022 at ELSS has thrown many challenges through health and floods. We are at our best as a school when we work together. There are many stories of families taking the time to speak with a classroom teacher to work through concerns and issues. I know my staff value community engagement and were delighted with the high number of families at Parent Teacher interviews last week. Well done to all.

Each day I am reminded of our great school and community as I spend time in classroom seeing students connected to their teacher and the learning. Let continue to work TOGETHER as partners in learning for every student to ‘SOAR TO SUCCESS’

This newsletter is a celebration of learning. Our mission is to engage, inspire and empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance. This is our visual message in the community-

I would like to celebrate our student leaders across the school. Our captains, PBL, Sports, Flag monitors and Student Council. This photo is of our year 3-6 student council, along with Mrs Bright. They provide student input and voice in school planning. Thanks to Mrs Blair for leading this work.

High Expectations and Positive Relationships are the foundations of our school at ELSS. Students are learning the national curriculum and also learning important social skills. It is these social skills that are explicitly taught every day, that set students up to be learners. It is your family social skills that we build from and the curriculum knowledge that we develop for you to build from. This is why I communicate that we are ‘Partners in Learning’.

The ELSS Annual Improvement Plan and Investing for Success continues to focus on improving literacy for ALL students. At the beginning of 2022, we took the time to celebrate our work in high impact strategies that reflected growth in our students English Level of Achievement. Our target for Semester 1, 2022 is to sustain 75% of students achieving A-C English. Our recent NAPLAN results confirmed our academic growth by closing the gap by 50% for ELSS and the National average. Well done everyone.

The Term 2 calendar is very full and jam packed with learning experiences for our students. The first 3 weeks are all 4-day weeks due to public holidays. This makes attendance even more important for your child for key teaching and learning time. I will share the current attendance rate and behaviour data with the community next term.

I wish you all the very best for a relaxing and enjoyable Easter holiday doing the things you love with the ones you love.

Yours in Education

Deputy Principal’s News

Term 1 has certainly gone by quickly. I would like to wish all of our families a happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back safe next term.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

Student Council Fundraiser

A huge thank you to the families and friends of Edens Lansing State School who helped to make this the most successful Easter Raffle ever! We gave away 58 prizes and raised $744.00.

This money will be a wonderful boost to our Kitchen Garden program which benefits all students at Eden’s Landing State School.

NAPLAN 2022

Each year, students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This year these tests will be done between May 10 and May 20. There will be catch up sessions across this time frame for any student who misses a test.

Students at ELSS will also complete a practise test on Wednesday March 30. The practise test will give students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the online format of the tests.

Please read the information provided to inform parents about the process and privacy protection.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child and NAPLAN, please speak to your child’s teacher.

End of term celebration:

Your children and their teachers have been working hard to learn new and exciting things this term. Here are some of the Term celebrations from Years 3 to 6 and the Specialists.

From the Year 3 Team - Year 3 having fun learning.

3R: We loved going outside to find living and non-living examples in the school garden. This was part of our science unit. We used a magnifying glass to discover a world of micro beasts and tiny wonders.

3V: In Science we’ve been investigating the characteristics that make things living and non-living. We’ve also had fun making funny (but correctly punctuated) sentences!

3D: We have enjoyed exploring length in Mathematics, using metres and centimetres to measure items in our classroom. We even measured the height of each other. We also enjoyed making posters to explain why some numbers are odd and some are even.

3S: We enjoy writing time and are improving our sentences with capital letters, full stops and ensuring there is a subject, an interesting verb group, and that our sentences make sense!

From the Year 4 Team

This term the year 4 students have enjoyed weekly Mathematics rotations. They have been applying the knowledge they have learnt during their Mathematics lessons in engaging small group activities and learning games. They have completed various rotations on place value, multiplication and division, fractions and measuring mass.

From the Year 5 Team Eureka! Year 5 Found Gold!

Year 5 students have been learning about one of Australia’s best known and most exciting periods in history, the Australian gold rush. Students enjoyed the opportunity to take a trip to the past and visit ‘Eureka Town – 1854’. The excursion gave students an opportunity to learn about what life was like on the Australian gold fields. Throughout the day, they experienced the hardships and the excitement of the gold rush through role play and storytelling. After being bailed up by a notorious local bushranger, students tried tent making, mapping activities, panning for gold, bartering at the general store and finally they purchased a miner’s license and had the opportunity to strike it rich!

From the Year 6 Team

This term, Year 6 have been settling in to the very important role of being the Seniors of the School. We have had our badge ceremony for our School, PBL and Sports Captains and our School Captains have also attended a Leadership camp at Runaway Bay Sports and Leisure Centre. Although our learning has been disrupted by Co-Vid and the floods, our Year 6 students have really enjoyed participating in hands-on activities in Mathematics, Science and HASS. We are finding that the approach of “Learning Through Doing” is helping our students make stronger connections to the curriculum and they can more easily see how it relates to real life. Students are already looking forward to Term Two and are busy researching and creating artefacts for our HASS Pop-Up Museum Event. We are finding this project to be very valuable, as we work in groups to study how and why Australia federated and learn about how the three levels of Government work.

From the H.P.E Team

Cross country was once again a highlight of term 1. More information in Mr. O’Donnell’s article.

The Kokoda kids completed a tough 21 kms in 8 hours and 45 minutes. They had to battle warm conditions as well as three tough hills. An amazing effort was shown by all 24 kids.

Deputy Principal’s News

This term has genuinely flown by and the community has worked together to overcome the difficulties of a delayed start and flood closures to help our children do the very best and Soar to Success!

As I walk through classrooms I see children enthusiastically engaged in learning - from learning letters and writing words to retelling stories with yoga in Prep; thinking mathematically and scientifically in Year 1 and mathematics and writing stories in Year 2 they are genuinely proud of their work.

Have a safe Easter break and come back refreshed for more adventure!

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL from the video below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLM2lxTOMio

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 1 & 2 Term 2:

Week 1

Reteach of the school expectations I am Safe, I am Respectful, I am a Learner. This will cover both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.

Week 2 & 3 I am Safe when I use Talk, Walk, Report to resolve conflict.

Students are explicitly taught this strategy for dealing with conflict.

  1. Talk: use a firm voice and tell the person to stop and state the school expectation being breeched.
  2. Walk: If the behaviour continues, walk away from the situation. Go to a safe space, walk towards a staff member and ask the adult for help to resolve the problem. Stay calm.
  3. Report: If the behaviour continues, tell the person on duty at break times or classroom teacher during learning times.

Sometimes, students may need to go directly to Report when the problems are dangerous or persistent. All staff members on duty wear a fluorescent vest with STAFF written on the back. This makes it easy for students to locate the closest adult to support them.
