Principal’s News

Hi ELSS community,

I hope this finds you safe and healthy. No matter what challenges come our way, we will continue to Soar to Success as a community together. Our kindness is extended from the classroom learning to writing letters of support to flood affected people, fundraising for assistance, sending out learning resources to students and staying connected.

It is wonderful to have parents back onsite, hold school assemblies, face to face parent teacher interviews, also have training and clubs start back up. We thank Mr Steve and Mr Kaleb for preparing our grounds and the cleaning team who work hard for our school.

Our communication systems of text message, email, Facebook and seesaw are being used with the ever-changing directives and advise. Thanks for your support of the school’s communication.

As our enrolments continue to grow, it is a reminder to acknowledge that ELSS is an enrolment managed school and can only enrol student who live in catchment at the time of enrolling. We are now reaching capacity for the number of classrooms we have at the school. Over the last 7 weeks I have turned away over 30 families who want to come to our great school but live out of catchment. I am proud of the school we have created, we even have some current enrolled families drive up to 30 minutes to come to our great school every day due to the positive culture and student learning opportunities. Well done to all the community for being partners in learning and creating a great school. This picture tells a thousand words-

ONLY 4 MORE WEEKS TO FILL OUT THE SURVEY

International Women’s Day

We acknowledged International Women’s Day, where we celebrate women’s achievements and reinforce a commitment to women’s equality We have so many women here at Edens Landing State School who are caring, strong and supportive. They show inspirational leadership and are wonderful role models to our students. Here are our 4 fantastic school captains who are leading the way across the school. Girl power #IWD #BreakTheBias

Updates

At ELSS we have an attendance and punctuality policy that aligns with Education Queensland’s state-wide initiative ‘Every Day Counts’. We are committed to ensuring a 95% attendance rate for all students. Be reminded learning starts at 8.50am every day. Look out for more 95&0 pizza disco parties!!

School uniform policy- White socks and Black Shoes. Part of the reason for high expectation in student uniform is- Safety, cost, confidence, school spirit, saves time, reduce distraction, encourages discipline and high school ready.

We are all very aware that coronavirus has been and is circulating within our broader community. We acknowledge and thank many families doing the right thing in getting tested and isolating if positive. The school has a supply of RATs to be sent home with students who are referred to sick bay with symptoms. Testing and isolating if positive is helping to reduce the spread of the virus at school.

Thank you for testing and isolating if positive or close contact. This is important at this time.

This is a great school. It is an exciting time to be partners in learning at ELSS. I value your input so please reach out to the school to share.

All of our classes are well into their learning for this term. Below is an outline of the work being covered in each year level.

Year 3

English:

Narrative: Students are learning to use descriptive language to write an engaging narrative.

Kumiko and the Dragon by Briony Stewart is the text we are studying.

Mathematics:

  • Exploring place value to 1000
  • Quick recall of single-digit addition and subtraction facts
  • Measuring, ordering and comparing length

Deputy Principal’s News

What an interesting start to our school year!

Though our teaching time has been disrupted, the children are well on their way to demonstrate new learning. At times, some children get very anxious about coming to school and it can be very stressful for everyone to work through this, especially if meltdowns or tantrums occur. What if playing games can help your child to develop self-control?

Executive functioning is a fancy way of talking about how your brain works to help us with organising our thoughts, controlling our emotions, and problem solving. We are not born with these skills, they are developed and practised.

Parents are well aware of younger children who are developing these skills can sometimes overwhelmed with all the sensory information and are prone to having tantrums or melt downs.

We can help our children develop and practise their brain skills by playing memory games and giving them personal challenges – and having fun along the way!

Check out the fantastic ideas to develop executive functioning skills from infancy through to adolescence.

https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/activities-guide-enhancing-and-practicing-executive-function-skills-with-children-from-infancy-to-adolescence/

Even though it was raining a couple of weeks ago, the year 1 children got to meet CC as part of a shared experience so they can write a recount. They acted out parts of the story “We’re going on a Bear Hunt” by tiptoeing and stomping around the school until CC met them in the Hall!

Each child got to give CC a high five before returning to the classroom to write up their stories.

In the meantime the Prep students wrote their first sentence— complete with a capital letter and full stop.

From the classrooms – What the students are learning this term ---

Prep –

English – The children are learning to demonstrate their comprehension of stories through retelling a familiar story

Book of the week- The Three Little Pigs

This week we are learning to sequence events from the Three Little Pigs to retell the story. We are learning to add characterisation to stories as we act them out.

In Phonics we are learning the most common sounds in order to make/ read whole words. The order of learning the sounds assist in making words as soon as possible s a t p i n c k e h r m d g o u

Maths

At the moment we are learning to sort objects according to various sorting rules, counting and recognising numerals, recognising 2D shapes and measuring and comparing the length of objects.

This week we are learning to represent the number 4 in different ways.

And we are learning to sort objects by hefting weight.

HASS: We are learning about our families and stories about our families past. How do we know things happened in the past? (photos, stories and artefacts) The children will share some stories about their families past. This might be about a family holiday, for example. Science: Our theme is Materials. We will discover the properties of different materials (waterproof, strength) by conducting simple experiments.

Tricky words – the

Science – Materials

Exploring the materials used in the Three Little Pigs. What would work better? Why?

Year 1

In English this term students will write a sequenced recount of a familiar event or experience including when, who, did what and they will also share their feelings about the event. Students will cover letter and sound knowledge through Heggerty’s and Jolly Phonics.

During reading experiences students will:

  • Predict next events and character reactions
  • Respond to questions about characters actions, qualities, and characteristics by expressing an opinion about the character
  • Make connections between print, illustration and diagrams
  • Analyse and evaluate characters actions or events in a story through discussion

In Maths this term the students will be focussing on the following topics:

  • Number and place value - count numbers in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100.
  • Represent and order teen numbers (using ten frames, paddle pop sticks and number lines)
  • Identify, continue and describe growing patterns
  • Represent and solve simple addition problems
  • Chance - describe the outcomes of familiar events using the terminology of “will, might or won’t”

In Science this term students will be investigating the purpose and properties of materials and apply these to create a boat that floats and carries weight.

In HASS this term students will be involved in identifying, describing and sequencing personal and family events and describe continuities and changes in aspects of daily life over time.

Year 2

Year 2 is embedding an English block. Students will cover letter and sound knowledge through Heggerty’s and Jolly Phonics. Students will participate in daily writing where they will begin to identify and compare similar characters from a range of texts. Students will also be asked to read texts and predict outcomes, compare texts and answer questions based on literal and implied meaning.

In Mathematics, students will be exploring the following concepts:

  1. Location: interpreting simple maps of familiar locations
  2. Measurement: Length: students will be asked to measure, compare and order objects using informal units
  3. Number: Group numbers into tens and ones and partition collections up to 1000, investigate number sequences that increase and decrease in twos, threes, fives and tens and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies
  4. Patterns: identify missing elements of a pattern and describe a variety of patterns

In Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), we will be investigating the inquiry question of ‘How are people connected to their place and other places?’. Students will be exploring the location and significant features of places and consider how people are connected to these and why they should be preserved.

In Science, we will be exploring the different properties of a range of materials and investigating the effects of combining different materials.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 7 & 8 Term 1:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. Due to the missed week last week, we will be revisiting I am a Learner when I do the fast five in week 7.

Week 8 will feature I am safe and a Learner when I Transition quickly and quietly around the school.

What is a Transition at School?

Put simply, a classroom transition is the process of moving from one lesson, space, or event to another during the course of the school day. They happen several times a day and often involve moving locations and collecting or swapping books and equipment.

Some examples of classroom transitions are:

  • moving from carpet time to desk work
  • rotating from one small group activity to another
  • shifting between learning areas
  • coming back into lessons after lunch
  • attending or returning from a specialist lesson
  • going to another area of the school, such as the library, hall, or kitchen/garden

School Representative Sport

Over the course of the year, students have the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting trials. This is offered to students who are born in 20010, 2011 and 2012 and are wanting to excel in their chosen sport/s and represent at a higher level for example Pacific Rim, South Coast and Queensland School Sport.

It is expected that any child wishing to undertake these trials has experience and demonstrated skills and knowledge in the chosen sport, generally having participated at club level.

All information needed to attend the trial will be handed out closer to the date. Please note that some sports have age and gender restrictions due to safety and number of teams being selected. A nomination note has recently been sent home and this must be returned as soon as possible as trials for certain sports have started. If your child hasn’t received one and interested in pursuing this pathway, they must collect a form from the office.

Interschool Sport

Unfortunately, due to the recent floods, fields won’t be available for use. It has been decided to cancel gala sport. This is unfortunate but we look forward to the next round in term 4.

Representative News

Congratulations to Billy-Rose, Hannah, Lyncoln, Seth, Khloe and Lincoln who recently competed at district swimming carnival. All students swam incredibly well and gained a lot of experience from the meet. Well done!

Congratulations to Nixon who was selected the U11 Beenleigh Zone Rugby League Team.

Sporting Achievement Shout Outs

Our school would love to hear about any sporting achievements your child/ren have made. It could be as simple as competing at a ballet performance, player of the match, a new personal best or an action shot playing a game. We are always looking to celebrate student success. Please send photo and a short comment of their achievement to kodon30@eq.edu.au

Kokoda

Kokoda is back!

What a great turnout to our first hike for the year. 21 kids hiked 15kms in 5 hours through Daisy Hill State Forest. Our Kokoda Kids did amazingly well in very warm conditions, all of them pushing on to the end despite how tough it was. It was great to see the support they had for each other to ensure their teammates finished. This Saturday we’ll venture out into the hills of the Gold Coast Hinterland where kids and adults will really need to dig deep to finish this one.

Running Club

This term, a running club will commence. This activity is offered to any student in grades P-6 who is interested in developing and improving their fitness. Sessions will be held by Mr Vergers on Wednesday mornings from 8:00am to 8:30am. If your child wishes to take part in the running club program, please complete a form and return it to the office.

Hats

Over the course of the year, lessons will be held on the oval. It is essential that your child/ren has a suitable school hat for all lessons. A note will be issued to students who fail to bring a hat to lessons. If your child/ren is unable to take part in a lesson due to an injury or medical reason, please provide a note.

School Sport Dates

Senior Sports Day (3-6): 3 June
Junior Sports Day (P-2): 2 June

Cross Country

The school cross country – fitness day will be now be held on Friday 18 March. This is a really enjoyable day that gives all students from prep to grade 6 the opportunity to participate in a fun-filled race around our school grounds. At Edens Landing, it is our expectation that all students will participate in this event. If your child is unable to compete in the race for health reasons a note of explanation must be provided to their class teacher.

Students must have a water bottle, hat, asthma puffer (if required) applied sunscreen and wear closed in running shoes. As our school will be celebrating Harmony Day on this date, students are still encouraged to wear orange in support of this day. Normal school uniform rules will apply for those not coming to school in orange attire.

Students from prep – year 2 will compete against their own year level. Students from grades 3-6 will compete in age groups according to year born.
