Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2021

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.

HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations

WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

As we approach the finish to 2021, it is timely to remember the ‘GROWTH’ seen within the school and in the community. I have seen growth in student learning, teacher practice, staff leadership, parent support and student engagement. We need to stay the course and continue to be partners in learning.

Thank you for your support to live out the Edens Landing Way-

Mission – Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance.
Vision – Positive Relationships and High Expectations for EVERY student succeeding.
Expectations – Safe, Respectful, Learner
Motto – Soar to Success

The Queensland Department of Education asked me to conduct a school review on another school on the north side of Brisbane. After spending 3 days interviewing, interrogating data, compiling reports and observing- I have a renewed appreciation for all aspects of our school (people, processes and facilities). ELSS is on a great journey and we should feel confident with our progress. I know that for our school to be better, I need to be better and I was in the learning pit over the 3 days. The school asked ELSS to share our Bump It Up Walls strategy, Positive Behaviour for Learning processes, Bullying No Way expilcit teaching of respect and our communication strategies.

The colour run was a highlight of the year for many staff, students and families. Just over $21,000 raised for upgrades to HPE department. Just look at the smiles on the faces below.

Our staff work extremely hard to engage our students in classroom learning and inspire students in various educational activiites. Please see the Magic of Music and Learn to Swim photos.

Last chance to advise about enrolments- away from the area and a change of school for catchment. If you are planning to leave our school for the 2022 school year, I ask that you advise the office in writing as soon as possible and complete our Exit form to ensure we have the most up to date enrolment information. Please share this with friends who are leaving or those you may know are enrolling. If your circumstances change over the upcoming months and a change of school is necessary please let us know.

Reminders-

  • Small number of students are still arriving to school not in full school uniform with black socks or coloured shoes and jumpers.
  • BUS and BASKETBALL COURTS- Students are to be supervised, in school uniform, when across the road in the basketball courts before and after school. We have received reports of students being rude to other children and adults. Further reports about negative behaviour on the school bus. Mitch, our adopt-a-cop, has spoken with numerous students to speak and act respectfully.
  • BULLYING- NO WAY is EVERYDAY at ELSS. ELSS process for how our students are to respond to an incident: TALK-WALK-REPORT. If you have concerns of an incident, please contact your child’s classroom teacher, if needed it will progress to Deputy Principal. Thanks for your support of the process. Edens Landing SS does not tolerate Bullying.

Attendance, Uniform and celebration-

Our 95% & 0 Pizza Party Disco is only a week away. All students with 95% and above attendance and Zero negative behaviours for term 4 will be invited to celebrate. We had 412 students last term.

Whole school attendance is sitting at 89%. Our goal is 93% as every day represents missed learning.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Deputy Principal’s News

As this is the last newsletter entry from me this year, I would like to thank our wonderful families and their beautiful children for the hard work and support you all give. It is a great feeling knowing we are all partners in your child’s learning. Have a wonderful break.

YEAR 3 NEWS

Our Year 3 little scientists have been investigating what happens when you add heat to solids. Our courtyard is an amazing outdoor learning space which is well utilized by our upper school classes.

YEAR 4 NEWS

Year 4 students have been exploring friction and how changing the type of surface makes a difference to how objects act.

Terrifying Trouble!

I have a gorgeous pet monkey,
Who is very nice and pretty,
Please don't tell her it's a joke!
Oh no, I feel a slight small poke,
I told you not to tell,
You can't keep secrets very well.

I turned my back, just to see,
That it wasn't my monkey, it was a bee!
It chased me all along,
So I found a trap to make it go BONG!
I guess you really didn't tell,
Well you do keep secrets very well.

But wait, I hear a sound,
Sounds like rattling on the ground,
I ran to the hallway, just to find
That my mad monkey was just behind,
Her ugly smell was so grotesque,
So I went and hid under my desk.

She soon found where I was hiding,
'Cuz I chuckled to find out what she was riding,
So I escaped, to find a new spot,
But before I hid, I tied a big knot,
But when she was following me,
She has encountered a buzzing bee.

She was really distracted for a while,
But then I was confused why her face had a smile,
I went back, hoping for the best,
Only to find out that the bee did the rest,
Her skin was as dry as my jokes,
And her hair looked like a hundred strokes.

After that, I felt very free,
Knowing that she had let me be.
That was a big, scary trouble,
I did not plan to burst her bubble!
To calm her down, I gave her a flower,
But wait, it wasn't a flower, it was flour!

Courageous Corgi by Sierra

My pup is a courageous corgi,
And I named him Brave Borgi.
The only thing he’s scared of,
Is the sound splish, splash, splosh,
And going for a wash!

He HATES big bubble baths,
And the brand of doggy shampoo, Carths.
But when I get out the doggy toy kit,
He starts to enjoy it.

But after a while he doesn’t want to stay,
And starts rudely running away.
Brave Borgi now has fuzzy fur.
Now he’s happy,
I DIDN’T KNOW HE COULD PURR!

He starts singing, ‘ Taglarbool gool!’
Now he’s courageous and cool!
He’s as cool as a pug in a pool.
I GTG (Got To Go)! He’s so hungry,
He’s about to drool.

YEAR 5 NEWS

"Year 5 students have been busy this week putting into practice everything they learnt about light at the Science Immersion Day last week. Their final task was to use reflective materials to investigate how to get light rays to go around a maze. They worked in groups and had many interesting discussions about reflection, absorption and refraction and how to bend light."

YEAR 6 NEWS

The Year 6 students are very excited to attend their graduation at Beenleigh Entertainment Centre. They have been practising the graduation routine and are looking forward to celebrating their Edens Landing State School journey with peers, teachers and families. It is important that students maintain their attendance over the next few weeks as we will be practising regularly.

Constable Mitch, our Edens Landing State School Adopt-A-Cop, met with our Year 5 and Year 6 students to discuss the importance of online safety. Students were introduced to a variety of strategies they are able to use in order to stay safe online, particularly with social media and online gaming. Thank you again Constable Mitch, we are looking forward to seeing you again in the near future!

Deputy Principal’s News

The last few weeks of school are probably our busiest, especially with swimming, assessments, prep playdates, meet the teacher, refurbishing B Block and of course our celebration days.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents, children and staff who have helped make this a successful year for all our students, as we all work together to make things better.

Prep for 2022

In preparation for their transition to school, the children who are starting prep next year have been coming along for visits to the classrooms and joining in activities. They have been listening to stories, drawing, cutting and gluing. Though there may have been anxiety from both children and parents, everyone was able to settle and make the most of the time together. The children from our local centres have been visiting regularly this term, getting used to big school and meeting different staff members.

We look forward to seeing the new faces next year.

Year 1s have been learning about narratives and now they are in the kitchen making cookie monsters.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING AT ELSS

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. It would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

ELSS has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 9 Term 4:

During week 9, students will continue learning about one of our strategies for dealing with problems. This strategy encourages students to have a voice, seek help from an adult and then finally report if the issue is escalating. During this focus, we also explicitly teach students that there are times when we go straight to report.

Over the coming holiday break, it would be wonderful if parents discussed the school strategies and processes students will need next year. The Fast Five is the language used across the school for bringing students to engage in learning. Talk, Walk, Report is the strategy for dealing with conflict. THINK is a process for considering the words students use with each other and staff.
