Thank you for your support to live out our mission, vision and expectations-

Mission – Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance
Vision – Positive Relationships and High Expectations for EVERY student succeeding.
Expectations – Safe, Respectful, Learner
Motto- Soar to Success

Events in the last 2 weeks have seen P&C meeting, Fireservice visit, Bush Tucker Garden plant out, GALA sport, Science excursions, Prep transisiton sessions and our Day for Daniel walk.

Our Bush Tucker Garden plant out was a team effort from staff, students, P&C and Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre.

Please see our communication on Seesaw, emails, newsletter and Facebook.

Many budgets within our school funding are based on enrolments. It is at this time of the year that families are advising that they are moving away from the area and a change of school is necessary. If you are planning to leave our school for the 2022 school year, I ask that you advise the office in writing as soon as possible and complete our Exit form to ensure we have the most up to date enrolment information. Please share this with friends who are leaving or those you may know are enrolling. If your circumstances change over the upcoming months and a change of school is necessary please let us know.

World Teachers day celebration was on Friday 29 October- Happy World Teachers’ Day to my amazing teachers at ELSS. I am very proud of you all. Thanks for your hard work to Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to do more and be more. Daily I see your commitment to our students and community. We are a great school because we have great teachers leading our great students.

Thanks to the families and community members that have respectfully notified the school about ELSS students making poor choices and not showing respect at the basketball court on Jamie Nicholson Dr- before and after school. Also, student throwing rocks at houses on their way home. We have notified the police and now sharing with families in newsletter. Parents, please be reminded that school supervision is from 8.30am to 3.15pm. We have a wonderful YMCA for outside school hours care from 6am to 6pm. Our adopt-a-cop, Mitch, will patrol the area and speak with identified students. As student are in school uniform, they will also be addressed at school. However, I urge parents to have the conversation with their children and take responsibility for their actions. As a school, we work hard with explicitly teaching respect daily as one of our expectations. Thanks to the families that instil this into their children, we require this from everyone to be a safe community as partners in learning.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Every day, our teachers are making a positive difference – creating opportunities for their students, empowering minds of our young people and proudly teaching our state's future leaders, innovators and influencers.

World Teachers' Day last Friday -is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank teachers for the important role they play across our school community – inside our classrooms and out in the community. Thank you to the many families who sent messages of thanks to our amazing teachers. They were very touched and enjoyed their morning tea.

CYBERBULLYING

In an age where many children have access to social media, it is important that parents are aware of what their children are doing online. Whilst ELSS has policy and practices in place for the use of technology during school hours, we cannot monitor or manage incidents that happen outside of school hours. We encourage all parents to read the following information and discuss it with their children.

Key points

  • Cyberbullying is using digital technology to deliberately and repeatedly hurt someone.
  • Cyberbullying can happen anytime, anywhere there’s internet or mobile access.
  • Talking, technology rules and online safety precautions can help your child avoid cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying: what you need to know

Cyber bullying is when a person uses digital technology to deliberately and repeatedly harass, humiliate, embarrass, torment, threaten, pick on or intimidate another person.

Cyberbullying happens in lots of different ways – in text messages, emails and online games, and on social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Roadblok, Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok.

Examples of cyberbullying include deliberately and repeatedly:

  • posting or sending messages that threaten people or put people down
  • leaving people out of online games or social forums
  • spreading nasty rumours online about people
  • setting up unkind or unpleasant fake social media accounts using real photos and contact details
  • trolling or stalking people online
  • sharing or forwarding people’s personal information
  • posting insulting or embarrassing photos or videos of people
  • harassing other people in virtual environments or online games.

Cyberbullying can happen at any time of the day or night, anywhere there’s internet or mobile access.

Cyberbullying: how to talk about it with your child

Talking is one of the best ways to help your child avoid cyberbullying. It’s best to start talking about cyberbullying when your child first starts to use social media, or when he gets a mobile phone.

Here are some things you could talk about:

  • What cyberbullying looks like – for example, ‘Cyberbullying is sending mean text messages, spreading rumours on social media, ganging up on or deliberately excluding someone in an online game, or sharing an embarrassing photo with other people’.
  • How it might feel to be cyberbullied – for example, ‘Being cyberbullied can make you feel very upset and lonely. It can make you not want to join in activities where the person doing the bullying might be’.
  • The consequences of cyberbullying – for example, ‘People who get cyberbullied can stop doing well at school and feel depressed, anxious or even suicidal’.

Technology rules to help your child avoid cyberbullying

Agreeing on clear rules about when your child can use her mobile phone, computer or tablet can help her avoid cyberbullying.

For example, cyberbullying often happens at night through text messages and shared images. It can help to have a family rule that everyone switches off devices at night and leaves them in a family area.

Practical tips to help your child stay safe online

Here are simple things your child can do to stay safe online and avoid cyberbullying:

  • Accept only people he knows as online friends and followers. If your child adds someone he doesn’t really know as a ‘buddy’, ‘friend’ or ‘follower’, it gives that person access to information about your child that could be used for bullying.
  • Don’t give out passwords. Some teenagers give their passwords to friends as a sign of trust, but a password gives other people the power to pose as your child online.
  • Think before you post. If your child posts personal comments, photos or videos she might get unwanted attention or negative comments. People can screenshot or download the comments and photos and share and post them anywhere. They can also be available online for a long time.
  • Tell you, a teacher or another trusted adult if he’s worried about anything that’s happening online, including if he sees someone else being cyberbullied.

YEAR 3 NEWS

Our Year 3 students are learning about fractions. Ask you child to tell you about their fraction journey. Can they tell the answer to the following?

YEAR 4 NEWS

Our Year 4 students have been having lots of fun learning about forces in Science. Here are some highlights form their lessons. Ask you child about what they are learning in Science. They are full of interesting facts.

YEAR 5 NEWS

Math + Garden = FUN LEARNING

The Eden’s Garden provided a unique opportunity for our Year 5 students to consolidate their recent learning in Math based on perimeter and area. The students enjoyed working together to solve ‘real world problems’ that centred on our unique garden area.

Leadership 2022

Senior badge selection is continuing, with many students already successful. The second part of the leadership process is now underway with students who have been successful in gaining a senior badge being eligible to apply for captains and school leader positions. The school has a process for selection of school leaders. It is important that families support school decisions as they are being made. At Edens Landing State School, we see all Year 6 students as leaders, even if they do not hold an official position. This is why all students will have ongoing opportunities to gain the senior badge. Whilst this means some students will not be eligible to apply for official positions, this is the process and we ask that families support the school as we go through the remainder of the leadership selections. Applications for leadership positions were short-listed this week and interviews for school leadership positions will start next week.

2022 SENIOR SHIRTS

We have placed the order for our 2022 Senior Shirts. If you missed the payment deadline but want a shirt for your child, please contact the office. A small number of extras have been ordered. Once these are gone, there will be no other opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2022.

YEAR 6 NEWS

Deputy Principal’s News

Hello Everyone,

It has been a very busy start to term 4 in the Junior Sector and we still have lots of things to look forward to.

Last week the children in year 1 and 2 were very excited to have a talk from the Fire Service on being safe as part of their HPE.

We are in the process of enrolling our students who will be attending prep in 2022. If you know any one who intends to enrol please ask them to collect an enrolment pack as our prep playdates are coming up 9 or 10 September.

Prep

All our prep students had the opportunity to attend Jacob’s Well, I am sure the Re-tells will be very exciting.

Year 1

Here is some amazing work written by 1W. It is a narrative they composed together. How proud they all were when it was completed.

Unicorn Saves the Day
Sally the rainbow unicorn was
sleeping in her bed. She heard a
bang outside.
The rainbow land shook. It was an
earthquake. A massive black and red
spider crawled out of the crack in
the ground. The spider tried to eat
Sally while she was asleep. But she
woke up and ran away.
Sally pointed her magic horn at the
spider to turn it into nice spider and
make it her friend. They loved
playing together on Sally’s pink
slide.
Written by 1W

Year 2

Last week the children in year 1 and 2 were very excited to have a talk from the Fire Service on being safe as part of their HPE.

On Wednesday 13 October, we were lucky to have a visit from the Beenleight Fire Station. They talked to us about call 000 (only in emergency), getting ‘low and go, go, go’ if there was a fire in our home and waiting outside near the letter box. One important reminder was to NEVER go back inside the house to get a toy – stay outside!

The fire fighters have asked the children to:

  • Discuss a fire plan with their families to ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency
  • Learn their home address so if they had a call 000 they know where to send the help.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

ELSS has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 5 and 6 Term 4:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. The first week of this term was used to target students transitioning between activities and areas in the school.

Weeks 5 and 6 will focus on our new whole school ‘Fast 5’. It would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

Chappy News

Hi everyone,

Friday 15 October we had Chic Chat’s annual celebratory Mother/Daughter night.

This year it was a dessert night at Mt Warren Park State School hall. We spent all day making the hall look wonderful for our guest. The tables dressed with tablecloths and runners, and table decoration. The chairs were covered and all tied with bows. Everyone entered through a balloon entrance and we set up a photo booth.

The night started at 6 pm with mothers and daughters from 6 schools in the district where the Chic Chat program is facilitated. The night celebrates the completion of the program and the importance of the mother, daughter relationship.

We had special guest speaker Councillor Karen Murphy, talk about how important it is for mothers and daughters to spend time each other. That it helps to develop stronger relationships, and even though there may be times when they do not get along, in the end when life gets difficul,t they really need each other.

During the night we played games, watched a power point of all the girls and performed a crowning ceremony, where all the girls were presented with a tiara and crowned princesses. The night ended with a small dance party.

We had 10 of our year 6 girls attend the night, with their mother, grandmother or aunt. Everyone had a wonderful time.

Cheers,

Chappy Tricia
