WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Our mission to Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance is seen daily in my walk throughs into classrooms. Some inspirational work from our teachers to increase student learning and growth. Students are on tasks, engaged in their learning and wanting to improve. I have received amazing feedback from families which I share frequently with all our staff at ELSS. We are partners in learning.

Reading is a super power! It was a great celebration across the school for Book week and Book Parade. The displays, learning and costumes on Friday was engaging. It was wonderful to share the Book Parade with family members onsite. Lots of phtoos and laughs as we highlighted different characters from many books. I love the commitment from all ELSS staff to our dress up. Great role modelling and showing students/families that our work is serious but we don’t need to be serious all the time.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our fantastic teacher aides here at Edens Landing State School. Our teacher aides take on many roles, all aligned to improving student academic and social outcomes. Our Teacher Aides and Support Staff share the same role at ELSS- Change a kid’s life.

Reminders-

Attendance, Uniform and celebration-

Whole school yearly attendance in 2021 is still below average at 88%. Shout out to Prep and Year 5 who have shown improvement. Our school goal is 93%. All COVID-19 and lockdown leave doesn’t impact these figures.

Prep- 86
Year 1- 87
Year 2- 88
Year 3- 88
Year 4- 89
Year 5- 89
Year 6- 90

Uniform reminder notes continue to be sent home to families of students who are out of uniform. We have worked closely with the P&C to build a strong focus on pride and unity through our uniform. We welcome any family to discuss financial hardship if this is a barrier to full school uniform. We are happy to support and help. We are partner in learning.

Countdown to our end of term Pizza and Disco for students who have an attendance rate 95% or above and 0 major behaviour incidents in this term. A new 95-0 student celebration.

Reminders-

Communication between home and teachers is a crucial feature of Partners in Learning. Please ensure this communication is kept between work hours and allow for a 24-hour response time by staff.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Term 3

Bookings have now closed for Parent/Teacher Interviews. If you missed booking but wish to speak with your child’s teacher, please email/SeeSaw the classroom teacher to make a time to discuss your child’s progress. Our Semester 2 2021 parent/teacher interviews will take place over weeks 8 & 9 this term. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will once again have phone interviews this term. The 10-minute interviews will run in a similar format as face-to-face with teachers calling at the allocated time. Teachers will call the number recorded in Oneschool twice so please be available at you allocated time.

From the Year 3 Team.

Our Year 3 classes had fun dressing up as their favourite character from a book. They understand how important reading is. A huge thank you to parents and careers who organised costumes for their children.

From the Year 4 Team

Year 4 have been learning about fractions in the kitchen. What a wonderful real life experience to learn from.

As part of our Book week activities and celebrations, students were involved in a scavenger hunt around they school. Our year 4 students were super sleuths and solved the puzzle easily.

It is lovely to see our staff getting involved in the fun of the day.

From the Year 5 Team

2022 Senior Shirt

As an acknowledgement of the final year in Primary School, the Year 5 students have the option to purchase a 2022 Year 6 Senior Shirt. Our senior shirt helps to foster a leadership culture within all Year 6 students. Edens Landing State School believes that every student in Year 6 has the shared obligation to lead the Primary student population and the senior shirt signifies to others in our community that they hold this responsibility. The cost for each shirt is $36.50. This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2022 so please respond to the SMS and get your orders in. Parents may order as many senior shirts as they wish, however, once the order has been placed with the supplier, no further orders can be made. Final day for payment id 15 September 2021.

This year we are trialling SMS ordering. You received an SMS on Monday 26 July with the information you require to purchase a senior shirt. Parents will need to enter in the parent notes section: your payment receipt number, the size of shirt your child needs and the number of shirts you want. You then hit the accept button and the order is sent directly to the school. If you are unsure of the size, enter the size you think is correct. You can then come and try on the shirts with your child and we can alter the size if needed once parents are able to come onto school grounds.

This year we are very excited to launch our new senior shirt design. The artwork on the shirt was inspired by one of our Year 4 students, Charlie, who is a proud Bundjalung child. His art work has been interpreted and embedded into the new design. I am sure you will agree that our 2022 Seniors will look amazing in the new design.

Year 5 Camp

The payment deadline has now passed for the Year 5 camp which will take place next week. Please ensure all documentation ahs been returned to your child’s teacher, including paperwork for medication. Even over the counter medication must have a pharmacy label with your child’s name on it and completed administration paperwork.

Students not attending camp will be supervised at school by teachers running an alternate program.

From the Year 6 Team

Our year 6 Students enjoyed their last Book Week Parade last Friday. They certainly showed their personality by selecting a very eclectic collection of costumes. It was great to see our seniors leading the parade with big smiles and lots of enthusiasm.

Deputy Principal’s News

In science we are learning how toys move. This week we are about how toys spin. The wonderful Mrs. Grey helped us make our spinning tops! The students has a ball testing out their experiments!

Hello everyone,

Walking around the classrooms in the junior sector I have seen a lot of amazing work.

Prep:

I have seen science experiments using spinning tops to see how toys move. How do they spin? What if I put it on the side? Does it matter how I try to spin it? Making learning fun. The excitement on the children’s faces watching how toys move was wonderful.

Year 1:

The children have been reading Possum Magic and retelling the story. A steady stream of proud children have been down to my office displaying their retells, some in such great detail, It has been hard to select just a few to showcase in the newsletter.

Possum magic

Hush and Grandma poss lived at the Australian bush and she made magic. She made Hush invisible. A couple of days later Hush wanted to be visible again but she could not find it in her book. Suddenly she remembered. It was people food!

So they rode a bike across Australia and Hush ate lots of people food. They went to Darwin and a tail appeared and then a body appeared. Then they went to Perth and a head appeared. Then they went back to the Australian bush and on every birthday she had what made her visible and she did.

She was happy forever.

Hush and Grandma poss lived in the Australian bush they were two cute possums. Grandma poss made magic.

She made Hush invisible. A couple of days later, Hush wanted to be visible again. When Grandma poss was looking for the magic, it was nowhere to be seen. She remembered it was people food.

First they went to Adelaide to have ANZAC biscuits. Then they went to Melbourne to eat minties. Then they went to Sydney to eat steak and salad. Then they went to Brisbane to have scones. They went to Darwin to have a vegemite sandwich and Hush had a tail. Then they ate a piece of pavlova and there was a body. Then they went to Hobart to eat a lamination and she could be seen from head to tail.

On her birthday she ate a vegemite sandwich, a piece of pavlova and half a lamination to make her visible forever.

She was so happy she danced!

Book Week:

What a wonderful week of activities for our children. We started the week with doors being decorated using the Book Week theme, Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds. Well done to Prep and Year 5, the winners, a difficult decision. On Friday, the children went around the school looking and complimenting the doors from other grades.

All the classes went on a scavenger hunt, reading and following the clues caused such excitement and the book cover design competition has highlighted how important books are to our school community and how talented our students are. Winners will be announced soon.

All our exciting activities finished on Friday with the Book Parade, a winner was chosen from each class by our Adopt a Cop.

Prep Hearing Tests:

‘Research indicates that hearing difficulties may have a significant effect on a child’s ability to learn. Hearing may change over time so it is important to monitor your child’s hearing even if they have passed a previous hearing test.’ Edens Landing State School has engaged the UQ Health & Rehabilitation Clinics to provide a Screening Program for our prep students. A consent form went home on Monday, this must be returned in order for your children to have the hearing screener. If you do consent, please return the forms by 10 September.

Wendy

PBL News

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Excursion/ Incursion permission system

The school is currently trialling a online permission form system, some of you will have already have used it. Parents will receive a text message asking to click on a link, then it will give you the information about the excursion/ incursion via pdf format and an option to give permission. The benefit of this system is parents will have instant access to the information on their phones and not having to look for forms at home. Invoices for payments will remain the same sent via email, bpoint is our preferred method of payment.

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

The payment window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities. Payment information and a hyperlink are on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. The hyperlink makes the payment process very easy, providing a simple and quick link to the payment portal for that individual invoice.

No late orders can be taken, as the Sushi is ordered from an outside company. All orders are to be placed on Flexischools as this is the only way to order Sushi and Tuckshop. Scroll across (on the APP) or click the arrow across (on website) to find the Sushi option.

Single use plastic Ban

The Single use plastic ban started on 1 September and as a result the cutlery currently used in the Tuckshop can no longer be purchased or supplied. This will mean that anything on the menu that has cutlery supplied has had an increase in price due to the new compliant cutlery that has to be purchased. You will no longer have to order cutlery for your items, the new price will include the cutlery price. Flexischools has been changed to reflect the new prices. I will also no longer be able to hand out cutlery if students come to ask for it if it has been forgotten from home.

Birthday Buckets

This year the Tuckshop is offering Birthday Buckets for $16. Your child will receive a Quelch Fruit Ice Stick for every child in their class (plus one for the Teacher/Aide) and they will also receive a balloon to take home. Help Needed

Tuckshop needs help on Mondays and Wednesdays. We rely on volunteer help so the Tuckshop can function at full capacity. Without regular help, the Tuckshop cannot run a full menu.

If you can commit to helping on a regular basis, please message our P&C page, email, call or drop in for a chat.

You do not have to be in the Tuckshop all day. Currently help is really needed for packing lunch bags and handing out class boxes on the above days. This would be from 10.15 am to around 11.15 am. So, if you think you can help, please let us know.
