Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2021

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Edens Landing State School Spirit is alive and well throughout the school. From sport, arts, learning and engagement, students are showing Safe, Respectful and Learner positive behaviours. We are receiving positive feedback from the community and continue to have new enrolments from the area. Thank you to everyone who plays their part to make this a great school. I look forward to coming together for the BUSHDANCE on Friday 18th June.

The foundation of our work is based on Positive Relationships and High Expectations. With these foundations we can Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance.

Over the last fortnight, we have had a regional school review which explored our inclusive practices. They have outlined many celebrations and left us with some considerations for improvement. All staff are committed to BETTER and look forward to unpacking the report and sharing with the community.

We have celebrated student achievement at parade, daily staff acknowledge positive student behaviours with tokens and direct praise. Let’s not forget the 1000’s of high fives and thumbs up to students for encouragement. We have also given consequences and re-teaching to a small number of students who are still yet to display SAFE and RESPECTFUL behaviour. We do not tolerate physical or verbal misconduct.

Toys, School Uniform and attendance-

For the majority of our families, a huge thanks for role modelling respect by sending their child/ren to school in full school uniform (outlined in student diary and on website), on time, ready to learn. I urge all families to keep toys, coloured jackets and jewellery at home. Reminder that staff will direct students to put these items in their bags straight away- Pokémon cards, poppers, Beyblades, plush toys, necklaces, bracelet and multi coloured jackets (only school jacket or plain navy blue will do!). The school takes no responsibility for the loss of these items at school as they are not part of our uniform or resources. Please read the information in the student diary. If you have financial hardship with school uniform, we are always ready to assist.

Whole school attendance in 2021 is still below average at 88.8%. Shout out to Year 1, 2 and 5 who have improved their attendance over the last 2 weeks. Our school goal is 93%.

Prep- 86.35
Year 1- 88.88
Year 2- 88.47
Year 3- 89.52
Year 4- 89.50
Year 5- 88.52
Year 6- 91.16

Reminders-

SeeSaw communication:

Communication between home and teachers is a crucial feature of Partners in Learning. Please ensure this communication is kept between work hours and allow for a 24-hour response time by staff.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Student Council Fundraiser

Thank you to the many families who have donated chocolates for our Lob-A-Choc stall at Bush Dance on June 18. The more donations we get the more chances everyone has to win a great prize, so please keep those donations coming. If you wish to donate any size or shape chocolate bar, please leave them at the office.

BUSH DANCE is almost here!

Please mark Friday June 18 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch for the flyers which outline this wonderful community event.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

From the Year 4 Team

Our Year 4 students have been cooking up a pancake storm during their speaking task this term. They have had lots of experience in the kitchen to make sure they knew what they need to present. They then channelled their inner chef to teach us all how to make pancakes.

From the Year 5 Team

Year 5 Bush Dance Stall 2021.

The Bush Dance is back and the Year 5 cohort are excited to be running the Lucky Pick stall. This stall replaces the Lucky Jar stall, using the same idea but replacing jars with zip-lock bags. We want our stall to be a big hit so are asking for every child in Year 5 (or any other class) to bring at least one zip lock bag filled with anything you like or items for us to put into zip lock bags. Suggestions: Lollies, lollipops, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties/clips and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Please leave Bags/items at the office.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the Year 5 teachers run the stall. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know or complete the note sent home.

Year 5 Switch on to Science!

Does Water Temperature Affect the Ability of Salt to Dissolve?

Our Year 5 students have been busy developing their science skills and working in groups to design their own scientific investigations. Together they have planned their experiments, made predictions, organised materials and recorded their observations.

From the Year 6 Team.

Year 6 students are busily upskilling their research skills in preparation for their move to High School at the end of this year. Students are using laptops and iPads to learn the correct way to note-take and reference from a wide variety of websites, how to check the validity of facts and how to identify which sites are reputable. Students are finding that their explanation writing is improving dramatically, as they can now include more interesting facts and information about a wide range of topics including earthquakes and renewable energy sources.

Deputy Principal’s News

Hello Everyone, It’s been a wonderful, busy and productive term at Edens Landing State School. So far we have had Pirates Day, Rewards Days and National Simultaneous Story time. All these activities are rich learning experiences to enhance your children’s time at school.

There are 193 school days in 2021. Attendance matters! Every day counts as it is an opportunity to learn. Our Student Planner lists the 4 steps you can help your child/ren to be a learner and ready for school - Make sure they have had breakfast, are in uniform, on time and ready to learn.

All students should have our school planner, why not take the opportunity to read it and check the wonderful information in there.

Year 1:

In Technology this term, Year 1 have been looking at different types of gardens.

They went out to our school garden to take pictures of Raised Garden Beds.

These pictures were then inserted into their Book Creator book that they are making about different types of gardens.

Our Premier, Ms Annastacia Palaszczuk has sent out an invitation to all students from Prep to Year 9 to participate in the Premiers Reading Challenge for 2021. Ms Palaszczuk is challenging all Queensland students to read or experience the allocated Number of books for their reading level (either 15 or 20 books) during the reading period form 10th May until 27th August.

If you would like your child to participate in this event, please register as an ‘individual reader’using the following link.

Please see a flyer with some helpful numbers and activities.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

‘Go for Gold’ Day Term 2 – Friday week 10

‘Go for Gold Day’ Term 2 is promising to be the best rewards day ever! The theme for this term is Side Show Ally. The team have designed lots of fun activities as highlighted on the flyer below. Please check with your child how they are tracking with collecting their tokens.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Rule of the Week

Week 9 & 10 Term 2: I am respectful when I use kind words and an appropriate voice

Over the next two weeks, students will be learning about using respectful words and voice. One strategy they will be exploring is the THINK process. This is a great discussion starter when talking to your children about using kind words and appropriate voice.

Office News

Student statements were sent via email to parents this week, if you have any queries relating to the statements please email the office : office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au

SRS REMINDER: 23 July 2021 is the final date for SRS to be paid in full, unless Centre pay deductions are in place.

Excursion/ Incursion permission system

The school is currently trialling a online permission form system, some of you will have already have used it. Parents will receive a text message asking to click on a link, then it will give you the information about the excursion/ incursion via pdf format and an option to give permission. The benefit of this system is parents will have instant access to the information on their phones and not having to look for forms at home. Invoices for payments will remain the same sent via email, bpoint is our preferred method of payment.

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

The payment window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities. Payment information and a hyperlink are on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. The hyperlink makes the payment process very easy, providing a simple and quick link to the payment portal for that individual invoice.

Chappy News

Hi everyone,

On the 2nd of June as part of the Chic Chat program with the year 6 girls, we had a ‘Day of Influence’.

This event was held in our Multi-purpose hall during the middle session, with girls from Beenleigh, Mt Warren and Windaroo State Schools who are currently also doing the Chic Chat program. This day is where we invite an influential person from our community to come and speak to the girls about something that relates to the Chic Chat program.

This time we invited Tess Van Bennekom a motivational speaker. Tess talked to the girls about Influencer’s in our lives, people who might be a good or a bad influence. How others can influence us our actions our feelings etc. and how we ourselves can do things to influence those around us. We learnt that no matter who we are we can make a difference in our homes, schools and community by doing small things to influence others.

A reminder that our next two parents/carers afternoon tea will be on the 10th of June and the 15th of July from 2.15pm to 2.55pm, in the Resource Center. All carers and parents welcome.

Cheers,
Chappy Tricia
