WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

We are truly blessed to work and learn at this wonderful school with beautiful grounds, committed staff, growing minds and engaged Partners in Learning. Thanks for the many emails and conversations about the progress our school continues to make. Over the past weeks, I have had the opportunity to visit other schools and return grateful about Edens Landing State School students, staff, community and grounds.

Along with the daily teaching and learning of the National Curriculum, our staff teach social skills to all 700 students. The social skilling of positive behaviour for learning looks different for all our students. Most students learn these positive behaviours by our tier 1 approach to explicit teaching and rewarding the positive behaviour we see. Some students require further support and teaching to display these positive behaviours. Finally, we have a small group of students who require targeted and intensive support and teaching to replace negative behaviour with the positive behaviour to be SAFE, RESPECTFUL and a LEARNER. I thank parents that share our messages at home and build that strong partnership between school and families. Learning Positive behaviour is just like learning the times tables in maths, some students may take longer but we never give up and increase teaching and support to be successful.

Teaching and non-teaching staff are well and truly engaging all students in classrooms that are inclusive, calm and orderly. The inspired learning is exciting - -

Toys, School Uniform and attendance-

For the majority of our families, a huge thanks for role modelling respect by sending their child/ren to school in full school uniform, on time, ready to learn. I urge all families to keep toys, coloured jackets and jewellery at home. Reminder that staff will direct students to put these items in their bags straight away- Pokémon cards, poppers, Beyblades, plush toys, necklaces, bracelet and multi coloured jackets (only school jacket or plain navy blue will do!). The school takes no responsibility for the loss of these items at school as they are not part of our uniform or resources. Please read the information in the student diary. If you have financial hardship with school uniform, we are always ready to assist.

Attendance at the school at present is 88.8%. Shout out to year 6 who are the best attending year level. Congratulations to the year 6 students and families. Our school goal is 93%.

Prep- 86.44
Year 1- 88.68
Year 2- 88.36
Year 3- 89.58
Year 4- 89.82
Year 5- 88.43
Year 6- 91.44

Reminders-

SeeSaw communication:

Communication between home and teachers is a crucial feature of Partners in Learning. Please ensure this communication is kept between work hours and allow for a 24-hour response time by staff.

Early Departure from school:

Full days of learning are important for student growth. If it is essential that you pick your child up early, please follow the school procedure.

  1. Come to the office and let the office staff know you wish to collect you child.
  2. Office staff will locate your child and ask for them to come to the office.
  3. Wait in the office foyer to collect your child. The office staff will sign your child out once they are leaving with you.

Please do not ring in advance asking for your child to be sent to the office. Your child’s safety is our priority. No student will be sent to the office until the adult collecting the student is sighted and their identity confirmed.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Deputy Principal’s News

It is hard to believe that we are already over half way through Term 2. It has been a very busy term filled with exciting learning and lots of fun. Students are working towards their end of semester assessments in readiness for report cards at the end of this term.

Student Council Fundraiser

Our second Student Council fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 18. Once again, we are asking for donations of chocolate bars for the stall. If you wish to donate any size or shape chocolate bar, please leave them at the office.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2021

Please mark Friday June 18 5.30pm-8.30pm on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

From the Year 3 Team.

Our Year 3 students have been using MAB to explore place value. They were challenged to create a castle using their MAB. Each castle has a different value according to the number of Hundreds (flats) Tens (longs) and Ones (shorts) it contains. The students had lots of fun creating their castles. One very clever student said, ‘I know what you did Mr V, we think we’re just building castles but we’re actually doing Maths!’ What a wonderful way to learn about place value.

From the Year 4 Team

In Science, the year 4s have been exploring the effects of weathering and erosion on our environment. They had lots of fun learning as they conducted a science investigation to study the effects of water erosion on sandcastles.

Year 4 students have also been planting tomato plants in our garden. They are learning about how plant grow and measuring them to see how fast they mature.

From the Year 5 Team

Year 5 Bush Dance Stall 2021.

The Bush Dance is back and the Year 5 cohort are excited to be running the Lucky Pick stall. This stall replaces the Lucky Jar stall, using the same idea but replacing jars (which are a bit dangerous) with zip-lock bags. We want our stall to be a big hit so are asking for every child in Year 5 to bring at least one zip lock bag filled with anything you like or items for us to put into zip lock bags. Suggestions: Lollies, lollipops, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties/clips and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Please leave Bags/items at the office.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the Year 5 teachers run the stall. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know or complete the note sent home.

Year 5 Science Matters!

Our Year 5 students have been busy exploring the observable properties and behaviours of solids, liquids, and gases. They have watched experiments, engaged in classifying materials, made predictions, and recorded results. Students are looking forward to working together to design their own science experiment and write a scientific report about their findings.

From the Year 6 Team.

Deputy Principal’s News

It’s been a busy two weeks in the Junior School demonstrating that learning can take many forms.

Year 1 children learning how to make string phones during the PBL Acknowledgement Day.

We have had children looking at and learning about the chickens we have near our amazing garden.

Year 2 children taking part in Under 8s Day.

Last Thursday, May 20, from 1.50pm – 2.50pm Year Two children got to participate in an activity of their choice for the celebration of Under 8’s Day.

Under 8's week is a celebration that happens every year.
Each year there is a different theme.
This year it was -

‘We've got a story to share.’

It's called the Queensland Early Childhood Development story.

It focused on 5 key messages about the importance of young children's development and each message was an important chapter in the story.

The 5 chapters are:

  • Loving relationships
  • Healthy environments
  • Learning everywhere
  • Strong connections
  • Supportive communities

The Queensland Early Childhood Development story lives on the ECEC website and each chapter has eye-catching images, useful information and animations.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

‘Go for Gold’ Day Term 1 – finally happened in Term 2 Week 5!

What an amazing day. Students enjoyed their rewards and spent the day with big smiles on their faces. Please take the time to thank the staff who make this event such a highlight in your children’s term. Without the dedication of our amazing staff, these events would not be possible.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Rule of the Week

Week 7 & 8 Term 2: I am a learner when I am in the right place at the right time.

Over the next two weeks, students will be learning about being in the right place at the right time. This includes being in class during learning times, at a desk when asked, playing in the appropriate places and eating in the allocated spaces.

Chappy News

We are halfway through the year; the year is going fast as usual. This time of the year we celebrate Chappy Week, the last week in May. This year it was the 23 - 29 May. This is a week where the communities highlight the work school chaplains do in our schools. We have chaplains in schools all over Australia working to support supporting schools and families. More than 67% of Queensland State Schools have a chappy.

It is really a privilege to be able to do the work that I do and I am very blessed to be able to work with such wonderful school communities. I thank you all for your support.

For those that are not sure what a school chaplain does here is an explanation from the SU Qld website.

SU QLD chaplains, or ‘chappies’, provide spiritual and emotional support to school communities. They are in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, depression and anxiety.

They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for children and young people in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

The top 5 issues students talk to chaplains about are:

  • Friendship/Peer Issues (14%)
  • Bullying/Harassment (12%)
  • Mental Health – Anxiety/Depression (11%)
  • School Behaviour (10%)
  • Family Breakdown/Parental Separation (9%)

Sourced from : https://www.suqld.org.au/services/chaplaincy/

Chaplaincy provides this support through various ways, such as one on one conversations and running social, emotional, and spiritual programs. Here at Edens Landing I provide support in these ways and with programs such as Chic Chat and SUPA Club, Parents Afternoon Tea and Breakfast Club.

If you would like to know more about what I do here at Edens Landing or to contact me for any reason my email address is pquat0@eq.edu.au.
