WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Daily I conduct learning walks and talks throughout the classrooms at ELSS. We have culture of engaged learning and opportunities. I thank the staff of ELSS who are committed to delivering quality education to your child/ren. I thank the committed families who drop off their child/ren in uniform, on time and ready to learn. The student GROWTH in learning and development is seen daily.

Having parents and families onsite at our sports carnival brought a great atmosphere and some sense of normality to the school being the hub of the community. Families cheering children, mothers getting involved with the relay and sharing memories together was a highlight of the 2 days.

Year 3 and 5 students have been completing NAPLAN online across the country. ELSS uses the Australian Curriculum for our reports and teaching of students. NAPLAN is just a point in time test that could support the teaching.

Hosting the Parent/Teacher interviews last week was another opportunity to be partners in learning, I thank the families that could prioritise this connection with the classroom teacher.

Sport is a wonderful opportunity for students to put their character skills into action. I challenged all student on our sport days to

  1. Do your best.
  2. Have fun.

These photos highlight the effort and smiles from the days-

Also, a photo of Captain Courageous (CC) and Mr Steve, as they gave a high five to students at the Sport Carnivals.

Toys, School Uniform and attendance-

For the majority of our families, a huge thanks for role modelling respect by sending their child/ren to school in full school uniform, on time, ready to learn. I urge all families to keep toys, coloured jackets and jewellery at home. Reminder that staff will direct students to put these items in their bags straight away- Pokémon cards, poppers, Beyblades, plush toys, necklaces, bracelet and multi coloured jackets (only school jacket or plain navy blue will do!). The school takes no responsibility for the loss of these items at school as they are not part of our uniform or resources. Please read the information in the student diary. If you have financial hardship with school uniform, we are always ready to assist.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy term. Students have slipped back into learning seamlessly, and it is encouraging to see so many wide-eyed, happy faces when I enter classrooms.

Student Council Fundraiser

A huge thank you to everyone who joined in the fun of our first fundraiser this Term. The money raised by our wonderful school community is going to the Children’s Cancer Foundation. It was wonderful to see so many families and staff joining in the fun for this very worthwhile cause.

Our second fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 18. Once again, we are asking for donations of chocolate bars for the stall. If you wish to donate any size or shape chocolate bar, please leave them at the office as they will be stored in my office.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2021!

Please mark Friday June 18 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

From the Year 3 Team.

Our Year 3 students started their first ever NAPLAN tests on Tuesday. They were very excited to get their ideas on paper and show their teachers how much they love to write.

From the Year 4 Team

Mr. Tuckett and Mrs Harding have been working with our Year 4 students, teaching them how to collect data, compile the data using spreadsheets and turn the data into graphs. Students counted cars in the car park and recorded which colour each car was. They recorded this data on their working page and then inputted the data into their spreadsheet to create graphs to help compare the data. Students will continue to use this skill as they move through primary school and into high school.

From the Year 5 and 6 Teams

One aspect of senior primary schooling is learning how to work as a team member and how to work together under pressure. Our teacher volunteer their own time to train students before and after school and love to see our students representing Edens Landing State School with pride. Teachers received very positive feedback from other school during our Gala Days this term about the exceptional sportsmanship demonstrated by all of our teams.

On Monday this week, some of our Year 5 and 6 students competed in the State-wide Soccer Cup at South’s United. Once again, the effort and attitude we talk about at school shone through as they displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. They won two games against St Francis, which resulted in them making the finals. They won the semi-final 5-1 against Stretton College and then lost the grand final 5-0 to the other Stretton College team.

It was wonderful to see that our students conducted themselves well by being both gracious winners and losers, showing that they respect the game, their team and their School.

A special mention goes to Bailey who received runner up MVP and Matteen and Mohadisa who received MVP awards on the day.

Well done to all players on a fantastic tournament and a huge thank you to Mrs Hropic who lead them on the day

Deputy Principal’s News

Happy Term 2 Week 4 – and what a big couple of weeks it has been for our school.

It was wonderful to see all our year prep-2s on the Sport’s Field, the first time for our Prep children. Thanks to Mr O and our Junior Sector staff for organising such a well-run event. CC even made an appearance, causing a lot of excitement.

Week 5 is the beginning of our Australian Early Development Census

Under 8s Day looks a little different this year, nevertheless just as enjoyable for our children. The children have been focusing on the Queensland Early Childhood Development Story:

It focuses on 5 key messages about the importance of young children's development and each message is an important chapter in the story.

  • Loving relationships
  • Healthy environments
  • Learning everywhere
  • Strong connections
  • Supportive communities

The 5 chapters are:

The Queensland Early Childhood Development story lives on the ECEC website and each chapter has eye-catching images, useful information and animations.

Click on the website for some great information and resources for your little people.

We have our PBL Acknowledgment Day coming up next Friday; this is for last term so children still have an opportunity to work towards Gold for Term 2.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

‘Go For Gold’ Day

Students worked very hard to collect enough tokens to attend our ‘Go for Gold’ Day in Term 1. We are excited to announce that our Term 1 ‘Go for Gold’ Day will be happening on Friday of week 5 this term. The same amazing activities are being arranged so our students can enjoy their rewards.

Our staff have already starting to plan for this term’s rewards day so students are already collecting tokens from day 1 Term 2.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Rule of the Week

Week 5 & 6 Term 2: 1-I am a learner when I actively participate in learning activities.

Over the next two weeks, students will be learning about

Student participation is an important aspect of teaching. Learners who engage in student participation activities retain more information and give their teachers important visibility into how they understand concepts. In a study by Faculty Focus, more than 70% of students saw a positive relationship between their participation and learning. They also saw value in other students’ comments in class. These students felt that classroom participation helped confirm what they’d learned, facilitated retention of the information, provided clarification and deepened their understanding of topics.

What you can do to help your child?

As a parent, you have a strong influence on your child’s learning and development from their early years and through school. You do not have to be an expert or know how to do the work your child is learning. Supporting and encouraging your child to learn makes a big difference.

The difference you can make

You are your child’s first teacher. How you support your child’s learning matters. You have a key role in shaping your child’s values, attitudes and approaches to learning at home, at school, and beyond.

Being engaged in your child’s learning

Research has shown that when parents are engaged in their children’s learning and build strong connections with their children’s school, there can be significant benefits for children:

  • They are more likely to enjoy learning and be motivated to do well
  • They have stronger relationships with other children
  • They have greater confidence and social skills
  • They do better at school and have increased wellbeing
  • They are less likely to miss days at school.
