Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to school for Term 2. I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break with family and friends. It is always nice to switch off the alarm and have a more relaxed start to the day. I enjoyed some beach, fishing and family time.

The ELSS ANZAC assembly was an amazing event that brought our students, staff and community together. We hosted Sargent Aaron Littlefield to address the students was a moving tribute to the current and past service men and women. I am proud to share that our students showed respect during this event.

The below photo’s demonstrate some of the opportunities provided for our students- Our specialist areas are HPE, Technology, Japanese and ARTS.

Respect at ELSS

I have spoken to some parents recently about students teasing, annoying, being rough and/or calling names at ELSS. In our conversation I tell them about my experience at multiple other schools and they have encouraged me to share my views in the newsletter for our community. With nearly 20 years’ experience in both primary and high schools, with roles such as behaviour teacher, head of department, wellbeing, head of school and Principal. I have a deep insight into student social skills.

Parents are children’s first teachers- what social skills, like respect, look like at home is the same respect students will demonstrate at school.

Teachers are children’s second teachers- we explicitly teach social skills and learning skills every day.

Our classroom walls are children’s third teacher- we have explicit learning walls for social skills and link to our PBL structure of SAFE, RESPECT and LEANER.

We don’t have a bullying problem at ELSS, we just have students who are yet to learn to show respect to other people all the time. This is part of growing up and maturing but this is why I communicate that we are Partners in learning- we need your help! Respect needs to be taught at home, we can build on your foundations. Just like we build learning skills that teach development with reading, writing and numeracy, and you can build on our foundations. We give a grade on learning skills, I would love to give a grade on social skills so families can be more aware and proactive about their child’s behaviour. Currently, this isn’t the case but rest assured, all our staff teach social skills every day.

School Uniform and attendance-

Thank you to the amazing families that have prioritised full school uniform and high attendance rates. We still have students out of uniform attending school. From coloured socks and shoes to incorrect shorts, hats and coloured jackets. Girls who wish to wear tights or leggings must wear their shorts/skirt over the top. Please reach out if you are under hardship for support. We are happy to work with you to ensure your child/ren are wearing the correct uniform with pride, displaying self-confidence and a sense of belonging to our wonderful school. Our uniform goal is to have 100% students in full school uniform. I will communicate to you through the student diary.

Our whole school attendance percentage is sitting at 88% for term 1. Our target of 93% is based of research for student learning and growth. Every day missed is critical teaching and learning that promotes growth and development. Attendance figures are discussed at Parent/Teacher interviews and appear on report cards.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

I love our school! We have so much to be thankful for. All staff are fully committed to creating opportunities for your children to succeed. We can celebrate our diverse community, students and staff. We are a great school when everyone works together to make it great.

NAPLAN Online Information for parents

During Week 4 and 5 of Term 2, students in year 3 and 5 students will undertake NAPLAN Online. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

Parents/carers can support their children with NAPLAN online by accessing the Public Demonstration site at home. Families can explore some of the key features of NAPLAN online including a range of questions types, onscreen tools, timers and interactive navigation. Students are encouraged to try all the tests for their year level to practise the complete range of item types in the online assessment.

Teachers are supporting students at school by continuing to provide quality teaching of the Australian Curriculum English and Mathematics learning areas. As a school we have also provided students with the opportunity to undertake Practice Tests on the 25, 29 March and 23 April, which has familiarised students with the online mode and tested our school’s network capacity.

During the NAPLAN online testing window which runs from 11-19 May, students will undertake testing during the following sessions.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy term. Students have slipped back into learning seamlessly, and it is encouraging to see so many wide-eyed, happy faces when I enter classrooms.

Student Council Fundraiser

This Term our enthusiastic student council will host two fundraisers.

The first is for the Children’s Cancer Foundation on Friday May 14. They are inviting students to dress up like a pirate, bring their treasure (gold coin donation) and raise money for kids’ brain cancer research. Pirate Day is a fun way to raise awareness and much needed funds for childhood brain cancer research.

Pirate Day was established by the Colgan Family to support childhood brain cancer research following the diagnosis of their son Conor when he was 5 years-old. In 2021, Pirate Day will be managed by The Kids’ Cancer Project with funds raised going towards research into finding better treatments and ultimately a cure for childhood brain cancer.

Our second fundraiser this term will be our Lob-A-Choc at Bush Dance on June 18. We will send more information home closer to the date requesting donations of chocolates for this much loved stall.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2021!

Please mark Friday June 18 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band has been invited back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Please watch this space for more information across the term.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

From the Year 3 Team.

Year 3 have been searching everywhere to learn about identifying living and non-living things. They have discovered earthworms (in the plastic cups in photos) from the ELSS garden and the Hawaiian Spinach plant too. They have been having fun deciding what is living and what is not. Once again our ELSS Garden is a wonderful place for our students to learn through hands on investigations and activities.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to another wonderful term at Edens Landing State School. This Term is already building up to be a very busy but productive time in your young child’s life. They will experience Bush Dance, Rewards Days, Dress like a Pirate Day, Sports Day and National Simultaneous Story time. Above all your children will experience quality learning experiences which allow them to develop into literate members of our community.

WHY IS READING SO IMPORTANT?

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. Here’s how you can get your child off to a great start.

Children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.

In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.

What Difference Can I Make As A Parent?

You can make a huge difference! Parents are the most important educators in a child’s life – even more important than their teachers – and it’s never too early to start reading together.

As children start to learn to read at school, you can play an important role in helping to keep them interested in books. Find out what interests them, help them to find books that will be engaging and fun, and spend time reading the books they bring home from school together.

Make sure that your child is familiar with language and books so they can see how enjoyable reading is. Some of the things you can do include:

  • reading aloud to your child, talking about the words and pictures, and sharing ideas about the book
  • reading yourself – children who see adults reading, and enjoying it, are much more likely to want to read themselves
  • surrounding your child with books – you don't need hundreds of books at home, but go to the library or bookshop regularly to borrow books, spend time together, browse and make choices. In this way, reading becomes a habit

Most importantly, talk to your child. Spend time with them, doing simple activities (like cooking and making things). As you talk about what you’re doing, you are helping them to learn new words. Later, when they see words written down, they’ve already heard them and know what they mean.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

Go For Gold’ Day

Students worked very hard to collect enough tokens to attend our ‘Go for Gold’ Day in Term 1. We are excited to announce that our Term 1 ‘Go for Gold’ Day will be happening on Friday of week 5 this term. The same amazing activities are being arranged so our students can enjoy their rewards.

Our staff have already starting to plan for this term’s rewards day so students are already collecting tokens from day 1 Term 2.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Rule of the Week

Week 3 & 4Term 2: I am safe when I keep my body to myself.

Over the next two weeks, students will be learning about keeping their hands and feet to themselves as they explore what it means to be safe by keeping their body to themselves. It is important that students understand how they can get the help, attention or interactions they want without resorting to physical misconduct. There are many social stories and YouTube clips that can help open this conversation with your child. Here are two you might like to visit.
