HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Not the finish to term 1 that we planned for. We will reschedule our planned events and meeting for early term 2. Please look out for messages. Regardless of the final 3 days, we have had a wonderful start to 2021. Well done to our students and school community for the great start to the year. Term 1 has delivered many highlights, both individually for our students but also our school. I look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 19 April.

Thankyou to staff, students and families that congratulated me on 2 years as the Leader of Edens Landing State School. We have achieved many milestones and there are many more in sight over the next 2 years. Your child/ren are now very dear to my heart. I have a great desire and passion to set them up for success in high school and see them leave ELSS to SOAR to SUCCESS. I appreciate my staff who have put their trust in me to lead our school improvements and make a difference in the lives of 712 students.

High Expectations and Positive Relationships are the foundations of our school at ELSS. Students are learning the national curriculum and also learning important social skills. It is these social skills that are explicitly taught every day, that set students up to be learners. It is your family social skills that we build from and the curriculum knowledge that we develop for you to build from. This is why I communicate that we are ‘Partners in Learning’.

I wish you all the very best for a relaxing and enjoyable Easter holiday doing the things you love with the ones you love.

School Uniform and attendance-

Thank you to the amazing families that have prioritised full school uniform and high attendance rates.

After 2 years of clear communication, we still have students out of uniform attending school. From coloured socks and shoes to incorrect shorts, hats and coloured jackets. Please reach out if you are under hardship for support. We are happy to work with you to ensure your child/ren are wearing the correct uniform with pride, displaying self-confidence and a sense of belonging to our wonderful school. Our uniform goal is to have 100% students in full school uniform.

Our whole school attendance percentage is sitting at 88% for term 1. Our target of 93% is based on research for student learning and growth. Every day missed is critical teaching and learning that promotes growth and development. Attendance figures are discussed at Parent/Teacher interviews and appear on report cards.

2021 School Priorities-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Deputy Principal’s News

Term 1 has certainly gone by quickly. I would like to wish all of our families a happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back safe next term.

Health Plans for Students with Asthma and Allergies

It is our desire to provide the best possible environment for the health, well-being, and safety of all students. Good management of your child’s asthma and allergies is important to his or her success at school. Clear communication between you and your child, your health care provider and school staff is the key to managing asthma and allergies at school. If the school does not currently have a formal Asthma or Allergy Action Plan for your child, please provide one as soon as possible. A written Asthma or Allergy Action Plan developed by your health care provider and shared with the school will help keep your child safe at school. Following the Action Plan will enable your child to participate fully in school activities. If your child is able to administer his or her Asthma medication without any supervision or assistance, an Action Plan is not required. If this is the case, please send a written note or email stating this to the school promptly. Likewise, if your child’s allergies do not impact their schooling, please notify the school that an action plan is not required. Thank you to the many families who have already done this.

Student Council Fundraiser

A huge thank you to the families and friends of Edens Lansing State School who helped to make this the most successful Easter Raffle ever! We gave away 61 prizes and raised $1240.00

This money will be a wonderful boost to our Kitchen Garden program which benefits all students at Eden’s Landing State School.

From the Year 3 Team

Our Year 3 students have been exploring using their senses to create ‘sensory poems’. Throughout the term students have been learning about language devices such as rhyme, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and evaluative language to capture the reader’s attention. Students have experienced the garden to see what they could see, hear, smell, feel and even taste in the garden. Students have then used these experiences to create their own poetry.

From the Year 4 Team

Our Year 4, we have been continuing their learning about symmetry in polygons. They have also been designing symmetrical designs using various polygons and colours.

From the Year 5 Team

Our Year 5 students have been keen Authors this term as they are learning about writing their own narratives. I am sure you will agree they are painting wonderful pictures in our minds with their words.

“I could see the rotting wood attracting many disgusting types of bugs as they swarmed a piece of apple. I could smell my grandma’s rose petal perfume invading the back of my nostrils. I could feel my stinky sweat dripping like a wave down my tall back and taste the plain taste of my spit drying away. I decided to invite myself inside regretting my foolish decisions.” By Parehuia 5K

From the Year 6 Team

Year 6 students have started designing and creating artefacts for their Popup Federation Museum. Students have been working hard to produce a range of multimodal pieces for their museum catalogue. Items include coat of arms, historical figures which influenced Australia’s federation and places linked to Australia’s democracy.

Deputy Principal’s News

Another busy week in prep- year 2

Walking around the classes I am excited to see the work which is being completed by our hardworking students, it is great to see such a big difference in our 10 weeks of school. It is lovely when children are excited about learning, running up with their work and telling me about the ingredients they have put on their imaginary wrap. Thank you for your support as you hear your children read daily, encouraging them to see themselves as learners.

Last week the Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program nurse came to administer vision screening to our prep children, reports would have gone home last week. This is a screening service so if you are concerned about your child’s vision, make an appointment to see an eye health professional, optometrist or ophthalmologist for a more detailed assessment.

We also were privileged to be able to have Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show for our Prep and year 2 students, Braveheart’s personal safety education. The students attending would have been provided with personal safety tools and strategies while supporting positive self-esteem and resilience building.

An important message using poems and songs. Despite the rain we were able to all stay dry and enjoy the show.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy holiday, take care and I will see you all when you come back next term.

Acting Deputy Principal
Wendy Williams

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

‘Go For Gold’ Day

Students have worked very hard to collect enough tokens to attend our ‘Go for Gold’ Day this term. We have a record number of students who have achieved Gold and Silver - Gold- 376, Silver- 222. It is disappointing that we have had to postpone our celebrations this term but look forward to celebrating next term with our amazing students.

Our staff are already starting to plan for next term’s rewards day so students will once again be collecting tokens from day 1 Term 2.

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

Week 1 & 2 Term 2: I am Safe when I use Talk, Walk, Report to resolve conflict.

Students are explicitly taught this strategy for dealing with conflict.

  1. Talk: use a firm voice and tell the person to stop and state the school expectation being breeched.
  2. Walk: If the behaviour continues, walk away from the situation. Go to a safe space, walk towards a staff member and ask the adult for help to resolve the problem. Stay calm.
  3. Report: If the behaviour continues, tell the person on duty at break times or classroom teacher during learning times.

Sometimes, students may need to go directly to Report when the problems are dangerous or persistent. All staff members on duty wear a fluorescent vest with STAFF written on the back. This makes it easy for students to locate the closest adult to support them.
