Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2021

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

There is a great energy in and around the school for learning. Our students are growing their strategies to be a learner. Families are sharing their child/ren learning journey and the great work by their teachers. Let’s continue our journey at Partners in Learning.

The ELSS Annual Improvement Plan and Investing for Success continues to focus on improving literacy for ALL students. At the beginning of 2021, we took the time to celebrate our work in high impact strategies that reflected growth in our students English Level of Achievement. Our target for Semester 1, 2021 is 75% of students achieving A-C English.

It was great to see parents and carers onsite for our meet the teacher. When the school and families become Partners in Learning- the growth and development of students can be significant. Another great strategy is students reading every day. Reading is a super power for a life of choice. Here are some images of our fantastic students using our Resource Centre for reading. Keep it up!!

Leading Learning Collaborative

This week six staff members and I attended two days at a Professional Development called Leading Learning Collaborative. Dr Lyn Sharratt, an educational researcher and consultant, led the sessions virtually. The two days were based on her work of “Clarity – What Matters Most in Learning, Teaching and Leading”. Many of our improvement strategies we have adopted at school originate from Dr Sharratt’s findings and are proving successful in building capacity in our staff and enabling our students to develop a deeper understanding of what they are learning about and why.

5 questions we ask students about their learning:

  1. What are you learning about?
  2. How are you doing?
  3. How do you know?
  4. Where do you go for help?
  5. How can you improve?

Try asking your child/ren these questions about what they are learning about. These are also important questions that you can ask the teacher at your Parent Teacher interview in Week 10 regarding what your child is learning about and what their next steps are for improving.

School Uniform

Thank you to all who have ensured that their children have begun the year in the correct uniform. In ensuring we maintain high standards and whole school expectations; all students are required to wear the school uniform. It was wonderful on our assemblies to see the students wearing their uniform with pride.

Thank you for ensuring your children are wearing predominantly black shoes with white socks as per our school uniform policy. Our students look amazing!

Reminder

Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety. To support this we have a wonderful before and after school care provider onsite YMCA. Police have been notified about ELSS students throwing rocks at cars and running onto the road between 7.30am and 8.30am. Let’s work together to ensure students have safe behaviours.

Stop Drop and Go area at the start of each year in EVERY school requires patience and understanding. New families learning the system, students learning our processes and lots of traffic. Outside the school gates is council land supported by Queensland Police.

Respectful relationships are expected on school grounds. Everyone is responsible to keep good order and a safe school. Please model being kind with words and actions. We ask Parents/Carers not to use the student toilets, there is a key available at the office and the available toilet to use is in the Middle Hall next to the Tuckshop.

2021

Our three school wide expectations are:

At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER.

Our school motto and expectations link closely, students can SOAR to success daily-

Families can help this through our STEPS to success at school: Had sleep – Breakfast - Healthy food - On time - In uniform - Ready to learn.

At ELSS we have an attendance policy that aligns with Education Queensland’s state-wide initiative ‘Every Day Counts’. We are committed to ensuring a 95% attendance rate for all students.

Message-

Our focus in 2021 at ELSS is about- “GROWTH”- We will build a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning. The target is 75%+ of students achieving A-C in English. Three Priority Areas are: 1. Curriculum. 2- Data. 3- Culture.

Year 3 Team

In HASS our Year 3 students have been learning about the role of rules in the community as well as how individuals participate in and contribute to their community.

As a summation of their learning students were asked to show something they have learned in a photo still. Korbin is demonstrating how police can direct traffic. We follow their rules to stay safe. Aiden is demonstrating how volunteers donate books to charities. Anna and Saskia are demonstrating the importance of guide dogs which are raised by volunteers, in helping people with vision impairment.

Year 4 Team

Our Year 4 students have been keen Mathematicians investigating mapping. They are reading and designing their own maps. They are including features such as legends, compass directions and scale. After students design their own map with written directions they then give the map to a friend to see if they can follow. They are also learning about different types of angles: acute, right and obtuse angles. They have been using their bodies to show the different types of angles.

Year 5 Team

The entire Year 5 cohort is looking forward to their March excursion to the Planetarium, where they will get to view an epic ride through our galaxy to discover more about ‘Our Place in Space.’

Light pollution dulls the night sky and hides the brilliant sparkle of the stars. If we are lucky we can see one or two stars fighting to be seen but star gazing in the city and suburbs is limited.

Thankfully, we have a wonderful planetarium that reproduces the night sky with breathtaking visuals and intriguing information for our students to study and learn about the night sky. Once students are settled and the lights go off, the night sky appears right before their eyes and the audio and visuals make them feel as if they are experiencing it in real life. Students will get to see the most famous constellations, learn about how humans perceived the skies in the past and learn more about the galaxy that surrounds us.

The Botanic Gardens offer students the opportunity to study the surrounding animals and plants for their next unit of work exploring adaptations of animals and plants.

Year 6 Team

Last week out Year 6 students headed for the pool for their Leadership Big Day Out at the Bethania Aquatic Centre. Students participated in leadership activities throughout the day that involved co-operation, team-building and building self-esteem and persistence. The students reported a very exciting day filled with activities both in and out of the pool. These moments in our senior student’s year have certainly created memories and strengthened friendships as they head into their final year at Edens Landing State School. These events would not be possible if it wasn’t for the teachers who go above and beyond to make the day happen. I am sure you join me in saying a big thank you to the Year 6 team.

This week saw our school captains attend the Primary Captains Leadership Summit 2021. Participants were chosen based on their exceptional leadership capabilities and were involved in a number of team activities and planning sessions designed to build their skills and to further develop teamwork amongst their peers. Our leaders represented their school with pride as they embraced the opportunity to work with students from our neighboring schools to develop self-confidence, communication, self-reliance, cooperation, leadership, and team work and life skills.

Deputy Principal’s News

The children are really getting into the swing of learning, and we are seeing some amazing work

All the students in Prep to Year 2 have also been doing daily practice of letters and sounds through a phonemic awareness program called “Heggertys”. Each day the children learn to manipulate the sounds in words, blending and chopping. This will help them in both reading, writing and spelling.

Children’s behaviour in the Early Years

At this stage, children are developing and practising skills and abilities that help them meet new people and make friends. This includes self-regulation and the ability to see other people’s points of view. These skills are great for getting along with others at school.

It is normal for children to be involved in conflicts, as they are learning to be social as much as they are learning to read and write.

Self Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.

It includes being able to:

  • regulate reactions to emotions like frustration or excitement
  • calm down after something exciting or upsetting
  • focus on a task
  • refocus attention on a new task
  • control impulses
  • learn behaviour that helps you get along with other people.

In Health and PE the children have been learning about the ‘Zones of Regulation’ to help them learn about their emotions and how to self-calm.

For more information of Self-regulation follow the link

https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/behaviour/understanding-behaviour/self-regulation

Children learn about self-regulation and emotions in their HPE lessons, building their emotional tool boxes and resilience.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework used in our school to promote positive behaviour. PBL helps us to develop a safe and supportive learning environment, build positive relationships and improve student learning outcomes.

Our school community has worked together to establish simple, clear and explicit expectations for behaviour. Student behaviour improves when students know what is expected of them and when good behaviour is recognised.

Our school takes a proactive, preventative approach, ensuring that all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to succeed. Our PBL team constantly works to ensure that all students benefit and identified students receive additional support when needed.

Find out more about PBL in this video.

Over weeks 6 and 7 students will be learning about classroom and school transitions.

What is a Transition at School?

Put simply, a classroom transition is the process of moving from one lesson, space, or event to another during the course of the school day. They happen several times a day and often involve moving locations and collecting or swapping books and equipment.

Some examples of classroom transitions are:

  • moving from carpet time to desk work
  • rotating from one small group activity to another
  • shifting between learning areas
  • coming back into lessons after lunch
  • attending or returning from a specialist lesson
  • going to another area of the school, such as the library, hall, or kitchen/garden

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 6 & 7 Term 1:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class.

We have just had our first meeting for the year on Monday 15 February 2021 and the AGM for the year was held afterwards. We were successful in electing (2) two Executive members for 2021, Sky Marshall as President and Caitlin Dayman as Treasurer. We still have (2) two to positions available on the Executive team, Vice President and Secretary. Their roles are in the images below.

The P&C supports and works with the school and community to achieve our future goals as a united team. These visions cannot be reached without your help and support.

All committees have the full assistance of the executive team as all events are a group effort, we cannot do it alone – “Many Hands make light work” – John Heywood.

We also need help to assist with events held during the year. Our first one this year is handing out ice blocks at Cross Country on 5 of March 2021 as each year level finishes, they receive an ice block. If you are here on the day and want to lend a hand while you are watching your child, please contact us and let us know.

Although, we understand everyone’s time is important to them, if you cannot stay for the whole meeting and need to leave, that is fine.

We look forward to seeing you.
