Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2020

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Dear ELSS parents, carers and community,

We are coming to the end of a very intense and emotional year. I encourage everyone to be kind to themselves and each other. I have been speaking with some heightened parents which results in heightened children for school. Let’s be kind and together finish this year strong and connected.

Let’s celebrate world teacher’s day- a bright future, NAIDOC week- always was and is Aboriginal land:

School improvement- Perception is an interesting concept, just this week I have had conversations with parents who feel the school communication is poor and the school does nothing to stop bullying. Whilst other parents have expressed congratulations for our communication channels and commitment to anti bullying.

Our school reality for everyone-

Communication at ELSS is highlighted by the parent and class teacher options through seesaw, email and phone. School messages through letters, newsletters, website and Facebook. Our feedback channel is through class teacher, then Deputy Principal and finally Principal.

Anti-bullying is addressed EVERY day at ELSS by explicitly teaching what respect looks like by staff daily. Additionally through PBL we reward positive respectful behaviour daily. Consequences are delivered with high expectations of showing respect. The school doesn’t teach negative or bullying behaviour. I encourage families to consistently discuss respect at home.

The first priority of our school improvement plan is to have the mindset of BETTER and solution focused- how can we do things better? We continue to explore making our school great. The school opinion survey results have been forwarded. The 2020 headline data from survey is-

91% of parents say Edens Landing State School is a good school.
96% of staff say Edens Landing State School is a good school.

Through our partners in learning culture, student achievement success is happening across the school. We look forward to celebrating the amazing achievements at the end of term.

We soon commence the start of our amazing adventure playground. Please see the final drawing of our fully inclusive, sensory and adventure playground. As we improve our teaching and learning, we are committed to improving the student engagement at ELSS.

Community consultation for school improvement in 2021 will continue. An email survey will be sent. The P&C meeting will feature community feedback. Also I will be conducting some round table discussions with parents for school improvement.

Reminder-

2021 planning- Our prep numbers for next year are growing each day so ensure you have enrolled. The other information we really need to assist us in our planning is knowing if you will be leaving us in 2021 (not our Year 6 students, we know this information). To help us in making our planning as accurate as possible if you know you will be leaving ELSS at the end of the year can you please email through to office@edenslandingss.com.au

Attendance- At ELSS, every day counts! Unless your child is sick, it is a requirement that they attend school every day and on time. All appointments need to be made outside of school hours, to ensure children’s learning is not disrupted.

One issue I need to raise with our community is the high volume of students who are being collected early from school. On occasion we know that there will be genuine reasons for students to be collected early, however, on Friday alone there were 35 students needing to come to the office and be signed out. That is an exceedingly high number. Please remember that early pick up needs to be for genuine reasons only.

Continue-

  • To support our work, please be reminded of the two foundations of Edens Landing State School- Positive Relationships and High Expectations.
  • Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety.
  • Our three PBL school wide expectations are: At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER

I welcome your feedback, please reach out if you have any questions, ideas or constructive feedback.

Deputy Principal’s News

As the year draws to an end, many students have grown out of their school uniform. We keep a supply of spare clothes in the office for students who have ‘accidents’ and to donate to families in need. If your child is leaving the school, or has grown out of their school uniform, please consider donating any spare items to our office. All donations gratefully accepted and can be sent directly to the school office.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS AT RISK OF ASTHMA

With the change of season well and truly upon us, it is timely to think about students diagnosed with Asthma. If your child has asthma and requires assistance to administer their medication, it is important for you to provide the school with your child’s emergency medication and their Asthma Action Plan, completed by your doctor. An Asthma Action Plan provides specific instructions for the school to administer your child’s medication.

We recognise that some students are capable of managing their asthma without adult assistance. If you are confident that your child can safely self-administer their asthma medication, let the school administration know if you have not already done so. The school will record your decision and will not require your child’s Asthma Action Plan. Please note that if your child requires assistance in an asthma emergency, staff will provide Asthma First Aid.

YEAR 5 NEWS

Year 5 Science Immersion Day—Let’s Learn About Light

Our Year 5 students have spent a fun filled day experimenting and exploring to develop their understanding of light. Throughout the day they engaged in partner activities to extend their knowledge about shadows, how light reflects, retracts and travels. Students used prisms to separate white light into a rainbow of colours and positioned mirrors to make a periscope, allowing them to reflect light and see around corners! What a fun way to learn about Science!

Student Leaders 2021-The 2021 student Leaders selection process is well underway. Students have been shortlisted and interviews have taken place. Voting took place on Tuesday of this week and successful candidates will be notified shortly. I would like to congratulate all of the students who submitted an application for any of the leadership roles. We certainly had an outstanding group of students from which to select. Thank you also to the families who supported their children in writing their applications and speeches and encouraging them to apply. It is lovely to see our wonderful families being partners in learning.

The senior shirts for 2021 have been ordered. If you missed the payment deadline, please speak to the office staff as we hope to see all year 6 students in their senior shirt next year.

YEAR 6 NEWS

Graduation for Year 6 Students 2020- Organisation for Graduation 2020 is well underway. Notes have gone home informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on 8 December. Whilst this year’s arrangements are different to past years, we will ensure that our Year 6 students will have lasting memories of their graduation form ELSS with a whole day spectacular. Please make sure payments are made by the due date to ensure no one misses getting their graduation pack, which contains the much-anticipated Year Book.

Year 6 Big Day Out - As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” at the end of this term. Information will be coming home about this soon.

High School Transition Days- please notify ELSS if your child is attending transition days for high school to avoid an unexplained absence being recorded.

Uniform -Please ensure all students remain in full school uniform right through to the last day of term. Students are not permitted to have others sign the uniform they are wearing at any time. If students wish to have their peers sign their shirt, they are to bring an additional shirt to school to have it signed on graduation day. As has been the case in the past, students who get their shirts signed will be asked to turn their shirt inside out for the day.

Deputy Principal’s News

Play is important

Playing card and board games often offer kids meta-messages about life: Your luck can change in an instant, for better or for worse. In addition to teaching them that nothing is guaranteed, board games are a good way to encourage kids of different ages to team up and work together — something they'll need to do throughout life. Games also give you the opportunity to teach your child about rules, about integrity and honesty, and about luck. Games also can help increase your child's ability to focus her attention. Playing board or card games also is a very social occasion. Game playing enables and encourages your child to practice important social skills that they will need to play well with other children. Nearly all games, for example, involve taking turns, sharing dice or a spinner, waiting for your turn, patience, and learning how to be a good sport. When you play games with your child, try to emphasise the fun of game as much as possible, rather than focusing on "who's winning."

Playing games is a good way for children to practise the skills necessary in developing resilience.

Work from the classrooms

The prep classes turned the rooms into habitats of the world to stimulate the children to write.

It is amazing how much they have grown in since starting school 10 months ago. Children who could hardly recognise letters and sounds are now writing whole stories – complete with capital letters and full stops.

PREP PLAYDATES 2021

Good afternoon Prep 2021 families,

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. It would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

ELSS has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 7 & 8 Term 4:

During weeks 7 and 8, students will be learning about one of our strategies for dealing with problems. This strategy encourages students to have a voice, seek help from an adult and then finally report if the issue is escalating. During this focus, we also explicitly teach students that there are times when we go straight to report

2021 Student Resource Scheme

Invoices for 2021 Student Resource Scheme were generated this week, if you have not received your invoice via email please contact the office.

The scheme for next year was approved at the last P&C Meeting to remain at $200 per student, which provides exceptional value for money. If families were to purchase the individual items via other methods the total cost could be between $780-990 per student.

Families who wish to alter their SRS participation preference for next year, either to opt in or opt out, must complete a new Participation Agreement Form. These forms are available from the school website or the office.

Instrumental Music participation follows the same process, so if your child currently has instrumental music lessons at school or hires a school instrument and you wish to change the participation option for 2021, a new PAF will need to be completed and returned to the school office asap.

Payment options are listed on the SRS Fee Payment Arrangement form. Please complete the form outlining your selected payment option and return the form to the school office by Friday, 6 November. All outstanding SRS invoices must be paid in full to be eligible for 2021 SRS participation.

Information documents are available from the school office and the website.

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

The payment window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities. Payment information and a hyperlink are on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. The hyperlink makes the payment process very easy, providing a simple and quick link to the payment portal for that individual invoice.

Tuckshop News

TUCKSHOP IS NOT accepting money and you can only order tuckshop through Flexischools. Please do not send cash with your children to order tuckshop for any of the breaks.

Tuckshop will be closed for cleaning the last week of the term.

  • Last day for first break tuckshop – Thursday 3 December.
  • Last day for second break tuckshop – Friday 4 December.
  • First break Friday 4 December – normal tuckshop menu not available. Subway lunch only available via Flexischools.

If you place an order and your child is away on the day, the order will need to be collected. As it will have already been made, it cannot be kept and will not be able to be cancelled or refunded.

A note has been sent home with details of this event. Check out our P&C Facebook page for more information at the link below.

https://www.facebook.com/ELSSPandC/

Flexischools cut off is 8.00 am the day of service, please have your orders in before this time. If you have ordered lunch for your child and they are absent from school on the day you have ordered, please contact the TUCKSHOP on 38057999 to let me know by 9.00 am to either cancel or hold over the order for another day. If no contact or late contact is made the order will stand and no refund or hold over of the order will be available. Please do not contact the busy office staff nor leave a message on the absence line, the absence line is for absences ONLY.

Flexischools IOU feature. If your child has forgotten their lunch and you are contacted by the office and wish the tuckshop to supply lunch for your child, you will receive a note from the tuckshop letting you know how much you owe. You can then pay that amount on the flexischools IOU feature. For example, if your bill comes to a total of $6.80 then click onto the IOU icon and select the different denominations to the amount of $ 6.80 (3 x $2 and 4 x .20 c) that amount then is transferred to the tuckshop and your bill is paid. I receive confirmation each time an IOU is paid. It is a fast and simple way to know your bill is paid and as the tuckshop is not accepting money, it is an ideal way to pay.

I have had a few people ask why they cannot find the specific lunch menus whether it be before school, first break, second break and IOU.

If you are using the Flexischools App

  • scroll down to FOOD
  • swipe across to find the appropriate menu
  • click on ORDER for any of the 3 different FOOD selections or click PAY on the IOU section

If you are using the website, this is what it will look like. Use the arrow at the side to click across to select the correct service.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website, there is also a highly informative help section on their website. At the current time, their phone lines are not in operation, you can find email contact information on their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
