Explicit Improvement Agenda for ELSS in 2020

WHAT: Literacy- Greater than 75% of students will achieve a C standard in English.
HOW: Positive Relationships and High Expectations
WHY: Literacy is the key to a life of choice not chance

Principal’s News

Dear ELSS parents, carers and community,

It’s time to say thanks our amazing staff at ELSS, especially our amazing teachers as we celebrated World Teachers Day on Friday 30 October. This year has been unlike any other and staff have risen to the many different challenges of education. During ‘Home Learning’ they were agile and responsive to work as partners in learning, whilst all personally dealing with their own pressure from home. 2020 will be remembered for many different reasons, I will remember how amazing the staff at ELSS worked to ensure EVERY student succeeded. When I get a phone call about students not respecting each other within the school, I know we have made a huge improvement. Just look at this data

ELSS DATA from the last 18 Months:

  • Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) set data which is school wide data of implementing PBL across all areas of the school has INCREASED by 40%.
  • Major behaviour incidents per month has DECREASED by 48%

Everyone has contributed to this. On behalf of the school community, I would like to say thank you to our amazing Teachers. Shout out to all the families that sent in treats for our Morning Tea celebrations.

A quick reminder in images about the great teaching and learning in this extraordinary year.

Day for Daniel was another successful whole school event which saw a sea of red across our community. Our school community raised $375 which has been donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Being SAFE is one of our three expectations and is the cornerstone of Day for Daniel message. Every student was taught how to keep safe and look out for others. I encourage our families to do the same and look after our school- online and in person.

Reminder-

2021 planning- Our prep numbers for next year are growing each day so ensure you have enrolled. The other information we really need to assist us in our planning is knowing if you will be leaving us in 2021 (not our Year 6 students, we know this information). To help us in making our planning as accurate as possible if you know you will be leaving ELSS at the end of the year can you please email through to office@edenslandingss.com.au

Attendance- At ELSS, every day counts! Unless your child is sick, it is a requirement that they attend school every day and on time. All appointments need to be made outside of school hours, to ensure children’s learning is not disrupted.

Continue-

  • To support our work, please be reminded of the two foundations of Edens Landing State School- Positive Relationships and High Expectations.
  • Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety.
  • Our three PBL school wide expectations are: At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER

I welcome your feedback, please reach out if you have any questions, ideas or constructive feedback.

Deputy Principal’s News

We know, once the jacaranda trees start to bloom, that the end of the year is well on its way. Our school is certainly a beautiful place to come to every day.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT

Over the last few weeks, there has been an increasing number of students purchasing food from venue canteens, which does not meet our School’s Healthy Choices Policies. Please ensure that your child has a packed lunch and water for all subsequent Gala Days as students will no longer be permitted to purchase items from the canteen.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Year 4 News

Our Year 4 students have been learning about forces in their Science lesson. One little scientist figured out how to keep the feather in the air.

YEAR 5 NEWS

Senior badge selections is continuing, with many students already successful. The second part of the leadership process is now underway with students who have been successful in gaining a senior badge being eligible to apply for captains and school leader positions. The school has a process for selection of school leaders. It is important that families support school decisions as they are being made. At Edens Landing State School, we see all Year 6 students as leaders, even if they do not hold an official positon. This is why all students will have ongoing opportunities to gain the senior badge. Whilst this means some students will not be eligible to apply for official positions, this is the process and we ask that families support the school as we go through the remainder of the leadership selections. Applications for leadership positions were short-listed this week and interviews for school leadership positions will start next week.

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

We have placed the order for our 2021 Senior Shirts. If you missed the payment deadline but want a shirt for your child, please contact the office. A small number of extras have been ordered. Once these are gone, there will be no other opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2021.

Year 6 News

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2020

Organisation for Graduation 2020 is well underway. Notes have gone home informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 8th December. Whilst this year’s arrangements are different to past years, we will ensure that our Year 6 students will have lasting memories of their graduation form ELSS with a whole day spectacular. Please make sure payments are made by the due date to ensure no one misses getting their graduation pack.

Loganlea State High School will be having a High School Orientation Day on the 1st of December 2020 for students enrolled for year 7 in 2021. Please contact the school on 3451 8777 to book an enrolment interview, or for further information.

Building resilience in children

From the Beyond Blue website

‘When we talk about resilience, we’re talking about a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs, and bounce back from the challenges they experience during childhood – for example moving home, changing schools, studying for an exam or dealing with the death of a loved one. Building resilience helps children not only to deal with current difficulties that are a part of everyday life, but also to develop the basic skills and habits that will help them deal with challenges later in life, during adolescence and adulthood.

Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events.

One way of explaining the concept of resilience is to imagine a plane encountering turbulence mid-flight. The turbulence, or poor weather, represents adversity. Different planes will respond to poor weather conditions in different ways, in the same way different children respond to the same adversity in different ways.

The ability of the plane to get through the poor weather and reach its destination depends on:

  • the pilot (the child)
  • the co-pilot (the child’s family, friends, teachers and health professionals)
  • the type of plane (the child’s individual characteristics such as age and temperament)
  • the equipment available to the pilot, co-pilots and ground crew
  • the severity and duration of the poor weather.

We can all help children become more resilient and the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask other adults such as carers and grandparents to help. Building children’s resilience is everyone’s business, and it’s never too early or too late to get started. We’ve got some simple things that you can do in your own home.

For more information on how to build resilience go to the link below:

https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/healthy-homes/building-resilience

From the Classrooms

The prep classes have been creating different ‘environments’ to stimulate children’s writing. One room is under the sea, while another is the Aussie Bush. The children’s have been actively involved in creating these imaginative spaces

The year one and two students are working on writing a descriptive sentences – expanding their vocabulary so that they can use more effective words – turning Boring sentences into interesting sentences.

Parents can help by pointing out these more interesting words in books that you are reading with your children

Children are also working on their spelling and punctuation with weekly or daily dictation exercises. This gives them multiple opportunities to concentrate on how the sentence is written rather than creating the ideas, as well as ‘getting it right’. The children are gaining confidence and are very proud of their progress.

PBL News

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) AT ELSS

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. It would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

ELSS has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 4 Term 4:

During week 4, students will learn about bullying. Specifically, what bullying is and is not. There are some wonderful resources online for parents to share with their children. Here are two links, which might help your discussions.

https://www.stopbullying.gov/resources/kids/facts

https://www.pacerkidsagainstbullying.org/what-is-bullying/

Weeks 5 & 6 Term 4:

Over weeks 5 & 6, teachers will explicitly teach lessons about being safe by keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. Here are some ideas for families to reinforce this rule.

  • Create posters showing ‘keep your hands and feet to yourself’
  • Role-play different scenarios for children to practise keeping their hands and feet to themselves
  • Watch a YouTube clip (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfZKdHMYzAg )
  • As a family, make a video about keeping your hands and feet to yourself. We would love to see these so please share.

Office News

2021 Student Resource Scheme

As this year draws to a close we are busy preparing for the 2021 SRS. The scheme for next year was approved at the last P&C Meeting to remain at $200 per student, which provides exceptional value for money. If families were to purchase the individual items via other methods the total cost could be between $780-990 per student.

Families who wish to alter their SRS participation preference for next year, either to opt in or opt out, must complete a new Participation Agreement Form. These forms are available from the school website or the office. The change of participation option must be returned to the school office by Friday, 6 November

Families who participated in 2020 will automatically be invoiced for 2021 unless a new Participation Agreement Form (PAF) with a change of option is returned to the school office by Friday, 6 November. Invoices will be raised and emailed on Monday, 9 November.

Instrumental Music participation follows the same process, so if your child currently has instrumental music lessons at school or hires a school instrument and you wish to change the participation option for 2021, a new PAF will need to be completed and returned to the school office by Friday, 6 November.

Payment options are listed on the SRS Fee Payment Arrangement form. Please complete the form outlining your selected payment option and return the form to the school office by Friday, 6 November. All outstanding SRS invoices must be paid in full to be eligible for 2021 SRS participation.

Invoices will be raised and emailed on Monday, 9 November. Information documents are available from the school office and the website.

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

The payment window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30am – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities. Payment information and a hyperlink are on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. The hyperlink makes the payment process very easy, providing a simple and quick link to the payment portal for that individual invoice.

Interschool Sport

Interschool Sport is half way through and since the beginning, our teams have shown so much improvement in their skills and team work. There have been loses and wins but our students are enjoying themselves playing sport. A special mention goes to our Senior and Junior Touch Teams who will be heading to the finals. We wish them the best of luck.

A reminder that training will continue while interschool sport is running. All students who are a part of an interschool sport team need to ensure they attend training sessions.

Touch Football-Thursday and Friday mornings 8am
Soccer- Monday and Wednesday mornings 8am

School Swimming

In week 8 and 9, students in grades 1-4 will take part in a school swimming program. Students in grade 1-2 will take part in a lesson every day for one week and year 3-4 will take part in an intensive swimming day. A reminder payment is due 18th November (1&2) and 25th November (3&4).

Hats

Over the course of the year, lessons will be held on the oval. It is essential that your child/ren has a suitable school hat for all lessons. If your child/ren is unable to take part in a lesson due to an injury or medical reason, please provide a note.

Shout Outs

Our school would love to hear about any sporting achievements your child/ren have made. P&C News

Next P&C meeting held 16 November at 6.15pm in the Admin Staffroom.

Tuckshop News

TUCKSHOP IS NOT accepting money and you can only order tuckshop through
Flexischools. Please do not send cash with your children to order tuckshop.

Please be aware of the amount of food you order for your children for first break. They have a limited time to eat and keeping hot and cold food that is ordered, prepared, and served at the correct temperature for the 11am break until second break, could potentially lead to illness.

Flexischools cut off is 8.00 am the day of service, please have your orders in before this time. If you have ordered lunch for your child and they are absent from school on the day you have ordered, please contact the TUCKSHOP on 38057999 to let me know by 9.00 am to either cancel or hold over the order for another day. If no contact or late contact is made the order will stand and no refund or hold over of the order will be available. Please do not contact the busy office staff nor leave a message on the absence line, the absence line is for absences ONLY.

Flexischools IOU feature. If your child has forgotten their lunch and you are contacted by the office and wish the tuckshop to supply lunch for your child, you will receive a note from the tuckshop letting you know how much you owe. You can then pay that amount on the flexischools IOU feature. For example, if your bill comes to a total of $6.80 then click onto the IOU icon and select the different denominations to the amount of $ 6.80 (3 x $2 and 4 x .20 c) that amount then is transferred to the tuckshop and your bill is paid. I receive confirmation each time an IOU is paid. It is a fast and simple way to know your bill is paid and as the tuckshop is not accepting money, it is an ideal way to pay.

I have had a few people ask why they cannot find the specific lunch menus whether it be before school, first break, second break and IOU.

If you are using the Flexischools App

  • scroll down to FOOD
  • swipe across to find the appropriate menu
  • click on ORDER for any of the 3 different FOOD selections or click PAY on the IOU section

If you are using the website, this is what it will look like. Use the arrow at the side to click across to select the correct service.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website, there is also a highly informative help section on their website. At the current time, their phone lines are not in operation, you can find email contact information on their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
