Principal’s News

Dear ELSS parents, carers and community,

Welcome back to the last term of a very challenging year. We are back into learning at ELSS in term 4! Huge welcome to the 6 new students joining the ELSS family this term. It is important to take time to reflect on the successes of term 3. Once again, I want to congratulate our community on the manner and understanding that you showed in our response to restrictions. Your role modelling to your children is of the greatest benefit. Sometimes we forget just how important our behaviours are and how much our children learn from them. As parents we are the first, teachers in our child’s life. So, it is very important that we actively show them ways in which to navigate our emotions in both the good and the difficult times. Our ELSS Steps to success-

Had breakfast/ In uniform/ On time/ Ready to Learn

Below are 5 images that highlight how we Engage, Inspire and Empower students daily at ELSS. This is the end of mental health week, but we are focused on student wellbeing every day.

Every day I do learning walks around the school, in classrooms and the playgrounds. I celebrate the diversity we have in our children and use this as learning opportunities for all. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is the ELSS whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across our school and helps develop safe and supportive learning environments. EVERYDAY and EVERY WEEK students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and establish clear and consistent boundaries. Staff take a proactive, preventative approach to ensure all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. We encourage familes to discuss our 3 expectations regularly at home.

I am SAFE, I am Respectful and I am a learner.

School operations-

2021 planning- It’s hard to believe but we are in the process of planning for 2021 and part of this is making our enrolment predictions as part of our staffing cycle. Our prep numbers for next year are growing each day so ensure you have enrolled. The other information we really need to assist us in our planning is knowing if you will be leaving us in 2021 (not our Year 6 students, we know this information). To help us in making our planning as accurate as possible if you know you will be leaving ELSS at the end of the year can you please email through to office@edenslandingss.com.au

High Expectations- Please continue to support our high expectations for behaviour, uniform and academics.

COVID 19- We haven’t changed our school processes of- social distancing (adults should stay at least 1.5m apart), adults only onsite with appointment, practice great hygiene, sneeze in to your elbow, and wash hands frequently. Children showing any signs of illness, they must stay at home.

P&C meeting- please join us on Monday 19th October at 6.15pm in the office for our next meeting. We begin the team work of targeted focus on school improvement for 2021.

Attendance- At ELSS, every day counts! Unless your child is sick, it is a requirement that they attend school every day and on time. All appointments need to be made outside of school hours, to ensure children’s learning is not disrupted.

Continue-

  • To support our work, please be reminded of the two foundations of Edens Landing State School- Positive Relationships and High Expectations.
  • Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety.
  • Our three PBL school wide expectations are: At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER

I welcome your feedback, please reach out if you have any questions, ideas or constructive feedback.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to another busy term at Edens Landing State School. We are still waiting for the much-needed rain but this has not stopped our beautiful Jacarandas coming into bloom. Thank you to all of the parents who made sure their children returned in full school uniform and equipped with everything they need to participate in learning.

STUDENT COUNCIL- DAY FOR DANIEL

Edens Landing State School Student Council will once again support this important day on 29 October. Students are invited to wear red to signify the day as our school walks around the block to raise awareness of this important message. Please look out for the flyer coming home shortly. We ask students to bring a gold coin to donate to this very worthwhile charity.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Every day, our teachers are making a positive difference – creating opportunities for their students, empowering minds of our young people and proudly teaching our state's future leaders, innovators and influencers.

World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank teachers for the important role they play across our school community – inside our classrooms and out in the community.

This year, World Teachers' Day will be celebrated on Friday 30 October 2020 and once again, we would love our Edens Landing Families to be involved in this process.

World Teachers’ Day at Edens Landing State School is not about purchasing gifts for teachers but rather bombarding them with e-mails or letters/notes/cards expressing appreciation for their efforts. So, please do this during the week leading up to October 30. This gesture only takes a few minutes and yet it means the world to the person receiving it.

We always include a morning tea component to our celebrations, so this year we are again inviting parents to make a plate of sweet or savoury treats that could be on offer to our Teachers to help celebrate the day. It would be great to have some gluten free and vegetarian options included. Students can deliver items to the office on Thursday afternoon or on Friday morning. Some refrigeration will be available. The teachers were all very touched by the kind words, which were delivered along with the goodies last year.

Of course, if there are other things you want to do to thank your children’s teachers as individual families or as class groups, please feel free to do so. Our teachers are amazing, dedicated people who invest a huge amount into each student in their care. It is important we recognise their contribution and say thank you.

CYBERBULLYING

In an age where many children have access to social media, it is important that parents are aware of what their children are doing online. Whilst ELSS has policy and practises in place for the use of technology during school hours, we cannot monitor or manage incidents that happen outside of school hours. We encourage all parents to read the following information and discuss it with their children.

Key points

  • Cyberbullying is using digital technology to deliberately and repeatedly hurt someone.
  • Cyberbullying can happen anytime, anywhere there’s internet or mobile access.
  • Talking, technology rules and online safety precautions can help your child avoid cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying: what you need to know

Cyber bullying is when a person uses digital technology to deliberately and repeatedly harass, humiliate, embarrass, torment, threaten, pick on or intimidate another person.

Cyberbullying happens in lots of different ways – in text messages, emails and online games, and on social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Roadblok, Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok.

Examples of cyberbullying include deliberately and repeatedly:

  • posting or sending messages that threaten people or put people down
  • leaving people out of online games or social forums
  • spreading nasty rumours online about people
  • setting up unkind or unpleasant fake social media accounts using real photos and contact details
  • trolling or stalking people online
  • sharing or forwarding people’s personal information
  • posting insulting or embarrassing photos or videos of people
  • harassing other people in virtual environments or online games.

Cyberbullying can happen at any time of the day or night, anywhere there’s internet or mobile access.

Cyberbullying: how to talk about it with your child

Talking is one of the best ways to help your child avoid cyberbullying. It’s best to start talking about cyberbullying when your child first starts to use social media, or when he gets a mobile phone.

Here are some things you could talk about:

  • What cyberbullying looks like – for example, ‘Cyberbullying is sending mean text messages, spreading rumours on social media, ganging up on or deliberately excluding someone in an online game, or sharing an embarrassing photo with other people’.
  • How it might feel to be cyberbullied – for example, ‘Being cyberbullied can make you feel very upset and lonely. It can make you not want to join in activities where the person doing the bullying might be’.
  • The consequences of cyberbullying – for example, ‘People who get cyberbullied can stop doing well at school and feel depressed, anxious or even suicidal’.

Technology rules to help your child avoid cyberbullying

Agreeing on clear rules about when your child can use her mobile phone, computer or tablet can help her avoid cyberbullying.

For example, cyberbullying often happens at night through text messages and shared images. It can help to have a family rule that everyone switches off devices at night and leaves them in a family area.

Practical tips to help your child stay safe online

Here are simple things your child can do to stay safe online and avoid cyberbullying:

  • Accept only people he knows as online friends and followers. If your child adds someone he doesn’t really know as a ‘buddy’, ‘friend’ or ‘follower’, it gives that person access to information about your child that could be used for bullying.
  • Don’t give out passwords. Some teenagers give their passwords to friends as a sign of trust, but a password gives other people the power to pose as your child online.
  • Think before you post. If your child posts personal comments, photos or videos she might get unwanted attention or negative comments. People can screenshot or download the comments and photos and share and post them anywhere. They can also be available online for a long time.
  • Tell you, a teacher or another trusted adult if he’s worried about anything that’s happening online, including if he sees someone else being cyberbullied.

YEAR 5 NEWS

The selection process surrounding nominations for leadership roles in Year 6 2021 has been explained to students and the process has started with students submitting their applications for a senior badge. Students who are successful in gaining a senior badge will be eligible to apply for leadership positions. Teachers have distributed Nomination forms to students who indicated their interest. Students must follow all timelines for submissions listed on the application forms.

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

Notes have gone home offering Year 5 students the opportunity to purchase a seniors’ shirt, so they are ready for them to wear from day one of Year 6, 2020. The cost for each shirt is $36. A sample of each size is available for fitting purposes from the office. If you are unsure of the correct size, send the payment and order form to the office and your child can try on the shirts and select the appropriate size on the order form. Please allow a little extra room for growth throughout next year, as we cannot exchange sizes once ordered from the supplier. There will be no extension to the payment deadline, all payments and forms to be returned to the office by Friday 23 October 2020 so we can ensure early delivery next year.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2020.

YEAR 6 NEWS

Our Year 6 students have been writing up a storm. Here is one story form a budding Author.

The Phoenix By Aila 6H

Smoke swirled up into the air as water met the blazing fire with a hiss. Bonnie stared at the wall of flames as her eyes watered from the thick smoke, the thick smoke that rose into the air with an orange tinge, as the fire climbed the trees, eating away everything.

Bonnie felt her heart racing as she tried to defend her precious home from the life threatening flames. The fire danced in the wind like a bird soaring from tree to tree. Her whole body ached as she limped to the other side of her house dragging the emerald green hose behind her, but the hose wasn’t so emerald anymore. Instead, it was covered with black soot and dirt and her nose was blocked with ash.

Her white shirt wasn’t white anymore either, it was midnight black from the ash and dirt permanently staining it. She didn’t like the feeling of the ash on her skin as it was gritty and dry, burning her soft skin.

The grass was dry and made a crunching sound that gave Bonnie a feeling of deep anxiety with every step she took and her black leather shoes tightly hugged her feet as she raced from the other side of her property. The flames grew taller and more menacing and the saffron glow brightened with every second that passed. The sizzling fire ate through the bushland with the rage of the wind rushing towards Bonnie’s property, and at this point, she thought she might lose everything.

Bonnie’s short brown hair bobbed up and down on her shoulders every time she ran. She was always a daredevil, and it was the main reason why she was protecting her property. It reminded her of 5th grade when someone had stolen her green apple sitting on her desk, she never gave up trying to get it back or to get justice.

A full spray of water desperately poured from the end of the hose and the fire seemed as if it was retreating as the water hit the flames. The tears in her eyes slid down her cheeks slowly, as a bone crushing pain shot up her leg as the leg of her black jeans caught on fire. She immediately turned on the hose again to extinguish the flames and she let the cool water trickle down her leg. Sighing with relief, Bonnie watched as the cold water washed over the large red blister that stood out on her shin and the severe burns on her thighs. She was still in a life-threatening situation and she knew that the battle was far from over.

The glow of the fire reflected in her green eyes as she coughed hard, trying to get oxygen back in to her lungs. The pain in her chest became unbearable as if she was being choked, and it was then that her body hit the hard, dry ground. She breathed slowly as she closed her eyes, admitting to herself that it was all over and everything around her became blurry and out of focus. Everything was white as the flames finally consumed her body and only ash was left in the bushland. Silence.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2020

At the end of this Term, our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Our Year 6 students have certainly had a senior year like no other. To make sure they have a spectacular farewell, we are planning a huge celebration for their 2020 Graduation. Graduation this year will be a whole day event, taking place on Tuesday 8 December. Notes have gone home informing parents of the arrangements.

Deputy Principal’s News

Bookweek is coming !

It’s wonderful to walk around the classrooms and watch teachers and staff are working hard together so that the children are having fun ad engaged in learning. The year one children are designing their own creature so that later they can write a story about the adventures it has. Multiple opportunities to have fun and be creative are being presented so that the story writing will improve.

This year has brought many stresses and complexities to both our homes and the schoolyard. For some, it has been difficult not to be able to visit family who live in other states or countries. For others, working from home, or a cut in working hours has changed the financial stability. For the sake of Mental Wellbeing (both adults and children), it is important to teach our children strategies to develop resilience – what to do when the going gets tough.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
(Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Some great ideas, videos and activities can be found

https://ideas.classdojo.com/

How to teach your child resilience

1. Start coaching and Stop controlling.
Doing things for them robs a child of the opportunity to become competent. Doing things with them teaches how and builds confidence.

2. Remember that perfection is not the goal.
Resist the temptation to "improve" on your child's task, unless the outcome is vitally important. Intervention undermines a child's confidence.

3. Let them try to do it themself from the earliest age.
Stand by, smiling, ready to be helpful in whatever way actually helps your child—but stay back a bit and keep your hands to yourself, except to give appropriate encouragement and unless you really need to help.

4. Help them build confidence by tackling manageable challenges.
Emotional development researchers call this "scaffolding," which could be defined as the framework you give your child on which they build. You demonstrate how to do something, or you use words to suggest a strategy, or you simply spot them.

5. Don't set them up for failure.
Offer structure to help them succeed, help through each step of the way to organise their ideas and work and resist the impulse to improve on the project yourself, they completes the job, hugely proud, and having learned something about how to plan and execute a complex project.

6. Encourage, encourage, encourage and teach self-encouragement
All humans need encouragement. Encouraging your child not only keeps them feeling more positive and motivated, it also gives them an inner voice that will help to encourage themselves for the rest of their life.

7. Instead of evaluating, describe and empathise.
Praise evaluates the outcome of your child's action, describe what they did and empathise with how they must feel: "You just kept practising and didn't give up... You must feel so good that you finished that!"

8. Focus on effort, not results.
Give positive feedback about specific things that they have control over, like hard work or perseverance, rather than things they feel they have no control over, like being smart.

9. Model positive self-talk.
Whatever you model, your child will learn and will emulate. Positive self-talk improves our mood, unlike the self-disparaging comments many of us so automatically make.

10. Don't be afraid of your child's feelings.
When your child encounters frustration, remember that your empathy will be a critical factor in his overcoming it. Instead of automatically jumping in to remove the source of the frustration, give it a larger context by communicating your compassion that they have to encounter this circumstance:

"I'm sorry this is so hard..."
"It's really disappointing when..."

11. Don't set your child up for extra frustration.
Your child will naturally develop the ability to handle increasing amounts of frustration and anxiety as they attempt challenges that are more difficult.

12. Affirm your child's ability to affect the world.
All children will experience reasonable limits to their power, but the more your child has opportunities to make a difference in the world, the more they will see themselves as capable.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING AT ELSS

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

ELSS has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Week 2 and 3 Term 4:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. The first week of this term was used to target students transitioning between activities and areas in the school.

Weeks 2 and 3 will focus on our new whole school ‘Fast 5’. It would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

Tuckshop News

Due to the current COVID 19 situation we are NOT accepting money and you can only order tuckshop through Flexischools. Please do not send cash with your children to order tuckshop.

Flexischools cut off is 8.00 am the day of service, please have your orders in before this time. If you have ordered lunch for your child and they are absent from school on the day you have ordered, please contact the TUCKSHOP on 38057999 to let me know by 9.00 am to either cancel or hold over the order for another day. If no contact or late contact is made the order will stand and no refund or hold over of the order will be available. Please do not contact the busy office staff nor leave a message on the absence line, the absence line is for absences ONLY.

There are some new features that have been added to Flexischools. There is now a BEFORE SCHOOL MENU, you can order your children slinky apples, cheese and bacon rolls, poppers, and milk to be picked up at 8.30 am when the tuckshop opens. If you use this service, please make sure your child comes to the tuckshop to pick up their items.

Another addition to Flexischools is an IOU feature. If your child has forgotten their lunch and you are contacted by the office and wish the tuckshop to supply lunch for your child, you will receive a yellow note from the tuckshop letting you know how much you owe. You can then pay that amount on the flexischools IOU feature. For example, if your bill comes to a total of $6.80 then click onto the IOU icon and select the different denominations to the amount of $6.80 (3 x $2 and 4 x .20 c) that amount then is transferred to the tuckshop and your bill is paid. I receive confirmation each time an IOU is paid. It is a fast and simple way to know your bill is paid and as the tuckshop is not accepting money at this time, it is an ideal way to pay.

I have had a few people ask why they cannot find the specific lunch menus whether it be before school, first break, second break and IOU.

If you are using the Flexischools App

  • scroll down to FOOD
  • swipe across to find the appropriate menu
  • click on ORDER for any of the 3 different FOOD selections or click PAY on the IOU section

Flexi 6

If you are using the website, the three different food times are at the top, the IOU section is below that and uniforms is below that.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website, there is also a highly informative help section on their website. At the current time, their phone lines are not in operation, you can find email contact information on their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
