Principal’s News

Dear ELSS parents, carers and community,

Welcome back Partners in Learning to Term 3 at Edens Landing State School! I am proud to lead this school and acknowledge the tremendous work that took place to navigate through our semester 1 response to COVID-19.

It’s been great seeing the happy faces back at school and hearing all the holiday adventures and opportunities. There was camping, playing in parks, gaming, up and down the coast, visiting family and friends, sleep overs and many more. I personally managed some reading and relaxing time with my family at the beach. It was a great time to reset and get ready for our next challenge.

We look forward to working together in semester 2 for EVERY student to succeed with Positive Relationships and High Expectations.

In term 3 we are excited to relaunch our student programs that were affected by the response to COVID-19. Students now have-

  • Access to ELSS Kitchen Garden for P-6 classes to deliver the Australian Curriculum.

  • Extension STEM program, MUSIC program, SPORT academy.

Many lunchtime clubs and groups.

  • Whole school parades for staff and students only.

We welcome our newest teacher Aaron Loiselle to our school. He brings experience and knowledge as one of our Technology teachers. Additionally in the front office, we have Charlotte Flanagan working 2 days a week.

REMINDER-

A huge thanks to the ELSS community for your response and continued improvements in school uniform. I appreciate that your children/ our students will SOAR TO SUCCESS with a positive school

culture. High expectation in student uniform supports- Safety, cost, confidence, school spirit, saves time, reduce distraction, encourages discipline and high school readiness. Please see the uniform guidelines on the website, link-

https://edenslandingss.eq.edu.au/supportandresources/formsanddocuments/documents/elss%20uniform%20guidelines.pdf

Additionally, the school continues to actively support parents that are experiencing financial hardship by purchasing uniforms through school funds or the P&C (on a case by case basis), organising end of term lost property parades, accepting uniform donations from parents and sponsorships from external agencies.

Term 3 response to COVID-19

Let’s Continue- :Washing hands regularly, Covering coughs and sneezes Throwing away used tissues, Staying at least 1.5 metres away from anyone who is sick Staying at home if you're sick. ELSS have extra cleaning time. Student wash hands before each session. No adults onsite unless a meeting has been approved by the school. Gates open at 8.30am. No cash onsite. ELSS staff will be deployed to ensure students transition from classroom to the gates. Families to discuss how they pick their child/ren up after school. All 3 gates will be open. You can use the exit that best suit your family.

BULLYING- NO WAY is EVERYDAY at ELSS

As a community we continue to clarify what bullying is- The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

IS- Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated.

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

ISN’T- Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

  • mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)
  • not liking someone or a single act of social rejection
  • one-off acts of meanness or spite
  • isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.

Edens Landing SS does not tolerate Bullying. Our schoolwide response within PBL is-

A positive impact of COVID-19 is seen in the resilience of students compared to the start of the year. We are seeing many more students ready to learn and enjoying the golden 2 hours of learning 9am-11am. Staff are moving on with quality education for all of semester 2. High expectations for uniform, behaviour and attendance.

The schools 2020 Focus is- An aligned culture of professional learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS. Our strategies include:

  1. Mindset of BETTER- Partners in learning.
  2. Whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) alignment
  3. Professional Learning Teams- supporting English across the school.
  4. Culture Foundations: Positive Relationships & High Expectations.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is already shaping up to be a busy term. Lunch time activities are back into full swing already. One of the many activities offered to students during second play break is our craft club. This club provides opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities, from bubble blowing, play dough, painting and construction right through to learning how to code using the school robotics equipment. If anyone you know has unwanted craft items at home please send them our way. We are always looking for anything which can be used. The items most needed are fabric, glue, scrap booking resources and items to glue to constructions (feathers, sequins, pompoms etc.) All unwanted craft items can be used and will be greatly appreciated. Please send any items to the office.

Student Council Jeans for Genes Day Friday 7 August

On Friday 7 August, students are asked to wear their jeans and bring a gold coin donation to support this great cause. Students may wear jeans of any colour with their uniform shirt and jumper. If students own a denim jacket or skirt (of an appropriate length), they may wear that in place of their school jacket or shorts/skorts. Students who do not wish to wear jeans are expected to be in full school uniform. Please note this is not a free dress day so all other aspects of school uniform are to be followed.

What is Jeans for Genes? Jeans for Genes is the iconic fundraising campaign of Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Jeans for Genes was established in 1994 by Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, cancer, and epilepsy.

1 in 20 kids is born with a genetic disease or birth defect. You likely know and care about someone affected.

Genetic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in kids under four and the main cause of ongoing hospitalisation. To fight this epidemic, we need more research.

Every Minute Counts

As the cold weather sets in, we are seeing a growing number of students coming to school late.

As a school community, we place great importance on students being punctual to school and to lessons. Lack of punctuality affects learning and behaviour not only of the student who is late, but of other learners in the class due to the disruption caused as student enter after the lesson has started and as the teacher is required to recap on missed learning for those who arrive late. This reduces learning time for all students of the class.

At Edens Landing State School, our expectation is that students are at school no later than 8.45am, so they are ready to enter class and begin learning at 8:50am. Similarly, students are expected to return to class promptly after each break.

Every minute of learning is important. Please support us in ensuring your child arrives on time, in correct uniform and with all the equipment they require, ready to work hard every day.

Enjoy More Time to Prepare

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the lessons to come. They have all the time they need to literally and figuratively wake up. Showing up on time can enhance the often-jarring transitioning between sleepy drives to school to concentrating on the day’s first lessons. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus.

Never Miss Important Information

Arriving to school after classes have begun can cause students to miss more than just the introduction to a new lesson. Teachers often share important information: reminders of upcoming events, class trips, classroom rules, project due dates and other school-related specifics. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event.

From the Year 5 Team

Science is Fun at Edens Landing!

Year 5 has been busy making tasty treats in the kitchen and, at the same time, learning to understand science and its connection to their world.

Students worked together to make creamy vanilla ice cream and, at the same time, they saw firsthand how Matter (solids, liquids and gases) changes from a liquid to a solid or from a solid to a liquid as a result of a change in temperature. This is a great experiment to try at home. Just ask your Year 5 child. I am sure they will be able to tell you all about it.

Year 5 Camp

This term sees our Year 5 students attending their two day camp at the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre on September 2 and 3. This is an amazing opportunity for your son or daughter to develop confidence, independence and build leadership qualities. All payments must be made no later than August 14. If you are finding it difficult to meet this deadline, please see our helpful office staff for assistance. This is an important event for our Year 5 students and I encourage all students to attend. If you have any concerns about camp, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 students are very excited that their camp is finally happening this term. Students will be attending camp September 9-11. Anyone who paid for camp earlier in the year, your payments have been transferred across to these dates. If you did not pay for your child earlier in the year, payments must be made by Friday August 21. We look forward to seeing as many of our senior students attending camp as possible.

Deputy Principal’s News

This week we started our Step Up to Prep transition program with the children who attend the local Early Childcare Centres. The children went into the prep classrooms for some time before having a fruit snack then going to our Resource centre for some story time. Each fortnight the children will be visiting our school and investigating different aspects of school life, such as the playground, Arts and Physical Education. A similar program will be extended to children who attend our Edens landing Little Learners Playgroup program and are eligible for prep next year.

Our Little Learners playgroup program also restarted this week. It was wonderful to see the parents interacting with their children with their learning and skill development. If you have a child between 3-5 years in age, come and join our learning group.

From the classrooms

The children in the lower school are learning about poetry and the language that authors use to engage the reader, such as Rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. The children are experimenting with these literary devices to create their own poems.

The Prep students are writing their own rhymes! I love to celebrate how they are becoming confident writers.

All children in years Prep – 2 are bringing books home to read each day. Sometimes they will bring home a picture book to just enjoy together. Here are some tips to ENJOY story time with your child.

  • Ask your child to choose what they’d like to read. They’ll feel more interested in the story if they’ve picked it out themselves. (And don’t worry if they keep returning to the same story, either!)
  • Sit close together. You could encourage your child to hold the book themselves and turn the pages, too.
  • Take a look at the pictures. You don’t just have to read the words on the page. Maybe there’s something funny in the pictures that you can giggle about together, or perhaps your child enjoys guessing what will happen next.
  • Ask questions and talk about the book. Picture books can be a great way to talk through your child’s fears and worries, or to help them deal with their emotions. Give them space to talk, and ask how they feel about the situations in the story.
  • Have fun! There’s no right or wrong way to share a story – as long as you and your child are having fun. Don’t be afraid to act out situations or use funny voices… your little ones will love it!

Office News

Cash Payment No Longer Accepted

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic this school no longer accepts cash for payment of activities or excursions. We understand that this is a significant adjustment to our processes, however this decision has been made for the health and safety of the whole school community. Thank you for your understanding and support.

The payments window will be open as usual on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 8.30 – 10.30am, for EFTPOS payments. BPoint is the easiest way to pay for school activities and payment information is shown on the bottom left-hand corner of each invoice. Parents can click on the link to bpoint on the invoice and will be directed straight to the bpoint payment screen for that invoice.

Year 5 and 6 Camps

Payments for both camps close in August, as per the notes. Please be aware to be eligible to attend the camp all students must also have no outstanding SRS fees, unless centrepay deductions are in place for the SRS. Contact the office for student account balances if unsure.

2020 Student Resource Scheme

Thank you to those families who have paid in full or are continuing to make payments for the SRS.

The final instalment is due by Friday, 24 July 2020. On Monday next week any student who still has SRS fees owing ( unless using Centrepay) will not be eligible to participate in paid activities until the SRS fee is paid in full. This includes camps, excursion and incursions. If you are experiencing hardship and wish to discuss payment options for the SRS please make an appointment via the office to speak with me.

If you have any questions about this process please contact the office staff for assistance.

School Sport Dates

Senior Sports Day (3-6): 28 August
Junior Sports Day (P-2): 27 August

Information regarding these events will be sent out later in the term.

Zones

You may hear your children talking about the Zones of Regulation. We have been learning about the Zones of Regulation in HPE lessons. The zones of regulation teaches children about the different emotions they feel and how to self-regulate these in a range of different situations. We learn about different strategies to use in each zone to help with self-regulation.

The Blue Zone

The blue zone is when a person is feeling low states of alertness or arousal. When you’re in the blue zone you may be feeling down – sad, sick, tired or bored. You’re still in control but with low energy emotions.

The Green Zone

The green zone is used to describe when you’re in a calm state of alertness. Being in the green zone means you are calm, focused, happy or ready to learn. This is the zone we want to be in predominantly most of the time. This state is most needed in the classroom for best learning.

The Yellow Zone

The yellow zone describes when you have a heightened sense of alertness. This isn’t always a bad thing and you still have some control. Being in the yellow zone means you may feel frustrated, anxious or nervous. But it could also mean that you’re feeling excited, silly or hyperactive – which is okay in the right situations.

The Red Zone

The red zone describes an extremely heightened state of intense emotions. When a person reaches the red zone, they’re no longer in a state of control of their emotions or reactions. Being in the red zone means you’re feeling anger, rage, terror or complete devastation and feel out of control.

Chappy News

Hi everyone,

Week 4 Term 3 in this crazy year! There have been so many changes and challenges for us all. On the Chappy front I have been able to restart SUPA Club and Chic Chat for this term, unfortunately the YMCA Breakfast Club is not able to start up again yet.

Despite this there have been some good things to come out of these times. One of which is the very many resources and information to help us with our mental wellbeing.

The Queensland Government have produced some resources to help support the mental wellbeing of Queenslanders through Covid-19.

Here’s an excerpt…

Your mental wellbeing is the unique way that you handle your emotions, respond to stress and also your general outlook on life. Having a healthy sense of mental wellbeing has many benefits. It lifts your mood, promotes resilience in difficult situations and helps you get the most out of life. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or how you’re feeling – taking a few moments for yourself each day will help you be a happier and more resilient you.

How can I improve my mental wellbeing?

We know that being active for 30 minutes each day can help you improve your physical health.

The good news is that taking just a few minutes to focus on mental wellbeing activities each day can lead to big improvements in your mental wellbeing too.

It only takes a few small actions, practised every day, to find a happier you.

If you wish to access these resources, click here:

https://mentalwellbeing.initiatives.qld.gov.au/

Remember to take care of you!

A reminder that you are welcome to contact me on Pquat0@eq.edu.au should you need support or more information on the programs I am running.

Kitchen Garden News

Over the holidays some maintenance work was done around the school:

  • The compost bins in the kitchen garden area were replaced with a permanent structure. The old bins were constructed using pallets, however the new ones have galvanised steel posts and sleeper sides so that they can be accessed easily by the tractor bucket. They look great.

The Kitchen garden is looking the best it’s ever been, lots of produce.

Class 4H moved the classroom to the garden, measuring lengths around the garden.

  • The new school signage looks great. A lot of time has gone into organising these signs and they certainly add freshness and a warm welcome to our school.

TUCKSHOP ORDERING

Due to the current COVID 19 situation the tuckshop will NOT be accepting cash and you can only order tuckshop through Flexischools. Please do not send cash with your children to order tuckshop.

Flexischools cut off is 8.00am the day of service, please have your orders in before this time. If you have ordered lunch for your child and they are absent from school on the day you have ordered, please contact the TUCKSHOP on 38057999 to let me know by 9.00am to either cancel or hold over the order for another day. If no contact or late contact is made the order will stand and no refund or hold over of the order will be available. Please do not contact the busy office staff nor leave a message on the absence line, the absence line is for absences ONLY.

There are some new features that have been added to Flexischools. There is now a BEFORE SCHOOL MENU, you can order your children slinky apples, cheese and bacon rolls, poppers, and milk to be picked up at 8.30am when the tuckshop opens. If you use this service, please make sure your child comes to the tuckshop to pick up their items.

Another addition to Flexischools is an IOU feature. If your child has forgotten their lunch and you are contacted by the office and wish the tuckshop to supply lunch for your child, you will receive a yellow note from the tuckshop letting you know how much you owe. You can then pay that amount on the flexischools IOU feature. For example, if your bill comes to a total of $6.80 then click onto the IOU icon and select the different denominations to the amount of $ 6.80 (3 x $2 and 4 x .20 c) that amount then is transferred to the tuckshop and your bill is paid. I receive confirmation each time an IOU is paid. It is a fast and simple way to know your bill is paid and as the tuckshop is not accepting money at this time, it is an ideal way to pay.

I have had a few people ask why they cannot find the specific lunch menus whether it be before school, first break, second break and IOU.

If you are using the Flexischools App

  • scroll down to FOOD
  • swipe across to find the appropriate menu
  • click on ORDER for any of the 3 different FOOD selections or click PAY on the IOU section

If you are using the website, the three different food times are at the top, the IOU section is below that and uniforms is below that.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below:

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website, there is also a highly informative help section on their website.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
