We pay our respects to Elders, past, present & emerging and recognise their continuing connection to Country and ways of learning over thousands of years.

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to 2020! We are ready to SOAR to success together. I will start with the introduction of my letter to parents that was emailed for the New Year-

“My personal goal is to create a school culture where students enjoy coming to school, engage in the learning process and set themselves up as successful young people ready to thrive at High School; developing character through curriculum learning”

A huge welcome to our new 108 Prep students and families. I saw the tears, nerves and excitement on your faces on Day 1. Throughout Day 1, I saw every student and every class engaged and learning. Well done to families and teachers for being partners in learning. Below picture is of year 2 students on the journey to engaged, inspired and empowered.

Introduction-

We have 3 new staff at ELSS, warm welcome to-

Jodie Hunter- A successful experienced teacher from Victoria who is teaching grade 1.

Terry Cloherty- A passionate local teacher who is teaching grade 3.

Richard Maze- A music inspired teacher who is our Specialist music classroom teacher.

Let’s Celebrate-

Mr Russell who is a permanent teacher at Edens Landing. Currently he is our student engagement teacher who support building positive relationships and high expectations for our students.

Kokoda restart for 2020. Again, Edens Landing SS will be leading the primary school sector.

Our 4 specialist areas across the school for student success are; Health and Physical Education, Technologies, ARTS and Japanesse.

Reminder-

Our school supervision starts at 8.30am, please do not drop students at school early, we cannot ensure safety. To support this we have a wonderful before and after school care provider onsite YMCA.

Stop and Go area at the start of each year in EVERY school requires patience and understanding. New families learning the system, students learning our processes and lots of traffic. Outside the school gates is council land supported by Queensland Police.

The ELSS P&C is a great opportunity to further being a partner in learning. I hope to see many of you at the next meeting. We are looking for executives but also families to attend and work together.

2020

Our three school wide expectations are:

At ELSS I am SAFE, I am RESPECTFUL and I am a LEARNER.

Our new school motto and expectations link closely, students can SOAR to success daily-

Families can help this through our STEPS to success at school: Had sleep – Breakfast - Healthy food - On time - In uniform - Ready to learn.

Operations-

I request that parents not use the student toilets. We are placing signs at each student toilet entry requesting parents to obtain the old hall toilet key from the office.

School uniform policy- White socks and Black Shoes. Please support this with your next purchase of socks and shoes to align with the school uniform policy. There are actually no changes from the 2018 policy however, I will be encouraging families/students to meet with guidelines. Part of the reason for high expectation in student uniform is- Safety, cost, confidence, school spirit, saves time, reduce distraction, encourages discipline and high school ready.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning families to another wonderful year at Edens Landing State School. I hope you all had a fun filled holiday break. Edens Landing State School focuses on building better learning environments for all students through innovative and exciting curriculum and actively teaching our students appropriate behaviour that allows them to get their needs met in efficient and socially acceptable ways, as well as rewarding students for demonstrating appropriate behaviour. We achieve this through Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework.

To reward the students who display appropriate behaviour, and to encourage students to strive to be the best they can be we have a school wide rewards system.

Our rewards system is based on students collecting gotchas which count towards each student attending the rewards day at the end of term. Attendance is not a component of this system, however, the more students are at school the more opportunities they will have to receive a GOTCHA.

Uniforms

Thank you to our amazing families who have sent their children to school, in full school uniform. It has been pleasing to see our students returning to school wearing their school uniform with pride. For those who are not sure of school expectations it is outlined below.

Girls: Shorts, skirt or skorts in navy blue. School shirt. Black school shoes with short white socks.

Boys: Shorts in navy blue. Black school shoes with short white socks.

All students: If hair touches the collar, students are to tie their hair up. All fringes must be out of eyes (trimmed or pinned). Ribbons, headbands and bows/hair ties are to be school appropriate and in school colours. Jo-Jo bows (or other large items) are not part of our school uniform, even if they are in the school colours.

Watches, stud or sleeper earrings and medical alert items are the only permissible jewellery. Culturally significant pieces permitted where appropriate.

Hats must be worn for all outside activities. Our school hat is reversible so can be worn for sports days and competitions. If a school-hat is not purchased from the uniform shop, a navy blue wide brimmed hat is required. Caps are not sun-safe so are not appropriate for school use.

DONATIONS NEEDED:

From time to time students need to borrow a uniform from our sick bay. This can be for a variety of reasons. At the moment our sick bay is completely out of school shirts. If your children have grown out of their uniforms (a few stains don’t matter), we would be very grateful for any donations of school shirts, skirts and shorts. Please drop any donations at the school office.

About Year 6 2020

Year 6 is a very exciting year for students, with lots of special opportunities available to them. School Leaders were announced last year, with our badge ceremony being held on assembly early this term.

Seniors received their senior shirts last week and look wonderful wearing them with pride.

Camp reminder forms also went home last week. If you want your child to attend but find the lump sum payment difficult, please contact the office to arrange a payment plan. This payment plan must be in place before the due date for payment.

Office News

2020 Student Resource Scheme

Once again our Student Resource Scheme (SRS) has been well supported with the majority of our families participating. Non-Participating families should obtain a list of the required items from the office as soon as possible if they have not already done so. Throughout the year teachers will send home requests for non-participating students to supply additional items as required.

Thank you to those families who have returned their Participation Agreement forms and made payments.

For families who have elected to pay using the instalment option, please note that the due date for the first payment is Friday, 7 February. The second payment is due by Friday, 1 May and the final instalment is due by Friday, 24 July.

Education Queensland policy states that account statements are distributed at the end of every month. If you are making regular SRS payments, including by Centrepay or instalments, and there is an invoiced amount unpaid at the end of any month please be aware that you will receive statements as a courtesy notification of the amount owing.

We have been working diligently to supply stationery items to students as quickly as possible after a deposit is received and thank teachers, students and parents/caregivers for their patience during this process.

2020 SRS Participation Agreement Form

If your student has not returned their SRS Participation Agreement form, I request that you please do so urgently. The Department of Education changed the form for 2020 so that now one form is on file for the whole of the student’s enrolment at this school. A form for each student must be retained by the school. If a parent wishes to change their participation option for the following school year this can be done by submitting a new form by the end of Term 3 each year.

Unpaid 2019 SRS fees

Please be aware that where a student has unpaid 2019 SRS fees, these must be paid in full to be eligible to attend incursions, excursions and camps.

If you have any questions about these processes please contact the office staff for assistance.

ATTENTION TO ALL CONTRACTORS, VISITORS and VOLUNTEERS INFORMATION and REQUIREMENTS

It is a Department of Education requirement that all contractors, visitors and volunteers working in any school must complete the annual Mandatory Training program. ALL contractors, visitors and volunteers entering the school must complete the Mandatory Training program.

Chappy News

Hi everyone,

Welcome to 2020. For the new families here at Edens Landing State School, my name is Tricia Quattromani. The children call me Chappy or Chappy Tricia. I provide social emotional and spiritual support here at the school for students, families and the staff, as well as run programs within the school. My office is located in J-Block and I am at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please free to stop in and say hello. If you need to book a time with me, your details can also be passed along to the lovely office staff, who will pass them along to me, so that I can contact you.

The YMCA Breakfast Club is up and running on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8am to 8.30am. We serve toast and cereal and sometimes fruit and baked beans. There are some lovely staff members and community volunteers from the community who assist with the program.

All the food and resources are provided by the YMCA.

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you are interested please let me know. Volunteers must have a blue card unless you are a parent of a child at Edens Landing State School, read and complete a quick volunteer training form in the office, which takes around 15 mins. Small children are not allowed in the kitchen for safety reasons, so this limits the number of people able to volunteer.

I also run parents afternoon teas during the year, on the second Thursday of every month. Our first afternoon tea will be March 12th from 1.45pm to 3pm, location yet to be decided. So please keep an eye out on the parents Facebook page for details. These afternoons are very relaxed and we have mums, dads, grandmas and even some aunties join us.

So please if you see me around the school do not hestitate to say hello and introduce yourself.

Chappy Tricia

Outside School HOURS CARE- OSHC

Welcome to our returning and new families for 2020. We look forward to working with families and the wider school community again this year.

We look forward to joining the P&C again this year, by volunteering to support events such as Christmas concerts and fundraisers. We also hope to hold Staff lunches and Parent Breakfasts through the year.

This year we are moving to online enrolments and booking. Once this s completed the service sends the Family an offer which once accepted will complete the enrolment.

The service is currently in the process of recruiting new Educators to fill positions by staff completing their Degrees and moving onto teaching careers. The service is also growing and the need for more Educators has increased due to growing numbers of families needing care.

WE welcome any ideas for programming or any ways the service can link with communities outside the school eg age care, places for excursions, parents the may be involved in clubs , scouting groups etc
