Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to Term 4 and a special welcome to our new families joining us at ELSS. I hope everyone enjoyed the weather and time with friends and family.

Our improvement review saw 3 big changes for term 4-

  • WARNING BELL- With 5 minutes to go at each break, a warning bell will sound for students to go to the toilet, get a drink then line up for learning.
  • MAXIMISE LEARNING- From 8.50am-11am EVERYDAY is uninterrupted learning time. Learning starts every day at 8.50am, so dont be late!!
  • ASSEMBLY change- to maxmise learning, we have moved the Friday assembly to 2.15pm.

Thanks for supporting- EVERY student succeeding.

This is resulting in Alignment and Clarity of student learning and ensuring-

EVERY student succeeding at ELSS!

The picture below was taken during my time in the year 6 science experiments. I saw students engaged in learning, discovery and questions. This is our school work moving forward- Positive Relationships and High Expectation for EVERY student to succeed.

The family steps to success:

Had breakfast - On time - Ready to learn - In uniform - Healthy food

Our 2019 priority is still-

The Edens Landing Way- A growth mindset for EVERY student succeeding

The strategies remain-

Alignment (consistency of a ELSS Way) - Growth Mindset (learning/demonstrating) - PBL (school wide reset) - Staff (development/getting BETTER) - Teams (cohort/groups working with others) and Literacy (English-planning/moderation/support/teaching)

School events-

STEM day, celebration of learning, NAPLAN readiness test, and Gala sport

Homework @ ELSS- 2019

To support EVERY student succeeding, ELSS encourages the below homework guidelines for 2019.

Students in Prep to 2- 15 minutes a day (regularly sharing/ reading books: Practice of sight/ keywords, spelling or maths)

Students in Year 3 to 5- 20 minutes a day (reading – independently, Practice spellings, longer maths or topic based activity)

Student in Year 6- 30 minutes a day (reading and research. research task related to curriculum work and additional items determined)

In 2020, ELSS will have an aligned Homework policy to ensure EVERY student succeeds.

We are partners in learning.

Student resource scheme (SRS)

Student Resource Scheme (SRS) for 2020 has begun. Information emailed to families and shared on our school website. SRS is the cost effective access to student resources at State Schools. We are in our 2nd year. It was wonderful to discuss SRS with parents at the 2 x SRS Parent information sessions on Monday. From these discussions, we are compiling a Frequency Asked Question sheet to share with the community.

Together, lets promote learning for EVERY student succeeding

Before School Procedure

For the safety of all our students, especially our younger ones, the teachers have devised a clear set of “before school guidelines”. These guidelines have been explicitly taught and practised with all the students. By following these guidelines we can maximise learning time and ensure our children are being actively supervised when they come to school.

  • Before 8:30 am all students are to be seated in the Old Hall, with their bags and belongings. Students need to remain seated in this area until dismissed by the teachers on duty.
  • At 8:30am teachers will arrive on duty and will dismiss any P-2 students who are in the hall. They will walk themselves without older siblings to the junior covered area.
  • Any students wishing to go to the tuckshop need to line up at the hall door near the tuckshop and wait for the teacher on duty to dismiss them. Students must order their tuckshop and then head to the Junior Undercover Area with their bags.
  • When the teacher arrives on duty, students may access the Junior Undercover Area and the Junior Oval before school. The Junior Undercover Area and the oval are the only two inbounds areas for the Junior School before 8:45am.
  • Please encourage parents that are waiting with their children to wait in the Junior Undercover Area.
  • Students need to ensure that during the morning they have ensured their drink bottles are filled, they have been to the bathroom and are lined up with any belongings they need to take into the classroom.
  • At 8:50am, Prep and Year 1 students are to line up outside of their classroom. Year 2 students are to line up at their allocated sections in the Junior Undercover Area and wait for their teacher to collect them.
  • Teachers and staff who see students in an out of bounds area before school will assist teachers on duty by redirecting students who are in the wrong area.

Writing in the classrooms

The Prep children have been writing some amazing descriptions of the Gruffalo and dinosaurs – they are learning to use a range of adjectives (describing words) to accurately describe creatures – have a look at their amazing work.

The year 1 students have been questioning each other to gather data!

They have devised questions and then tallied the answers to determine the most popular items. Who would think that cookies and cream ice- cream is more popular than caramel and chocolate!

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to another busy term at Edens Landing State School. The much-needed rain has resulted in our school starting to look green and fresh once again with our beautiful Jacarandas coming into bloom. Thank you to all of the parents who made sure their children returned in full school uniform and equipped with all of the equipment they need to participate in learning.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2019

At the end of this Term, our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Notes will be going home soon informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 9th December. This year we will once again be holding the event at the school to reduce the cost to parents and giving our graduating students the opportunity to have a short ‘disco’ after the ceremony.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 11th of December. This year we will be heading to Movie World. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students. Please fill out the permission forms which have been sent home and utilise the payment options indicated to ensure your child’s place on the day. If you do not have the note, please contact the office to get a copy.

We have had a small number of parents asking about transporting their children on the day. We ask that any parent who is able to transport extra students on the day, please contact your child’s teacher so we can help facilitate every child attending.

YEAR 5 NEWS

The selection process surrounding nominations for leadership roles in Year 6 2020 has been explained to students and the process has started with students submitting their applications for a senior badge. Students who are successful in gaining a senior badge will be eligible to apply for leadership positions. Nomination forms have been distributed to students who indicated their interest. Students are to return all completed nomination forms to the office no later than Week 4, Term 4 (Thursday 31/10).

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

Notes have gone home offering Year 5 students the opportunity to purchase a seniors’ shirt, so they are ready for them to wear from day one of Year 6, 2020.

Sizes of the shirts are similar to the current (new stock) uniform sizes. If your child is wearing a uniform from a previous batch, the sizes may vary. A sample of each size is available for fitting purposes from the office. The cost for each shirt is $36. Please allow a little extra room for growth throughout next year as we cannot exchange sizes once ordered from the supplier.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2020.

If you are unsure of the correct size, send the payment and order form to the office and your child can try on the shirts and select the appropriate size on the order form. There will be no extension to the payment deadline, all payments and forms to be returned to the office by Friday 8th November 2019 so we can ensure early delivery next year.

DAY FOR DANIEL

Edens Landing State School Student Council will once again support this important day. Families are invited to join us on Thursday 24th October (approx.1:45pm) as we walk our way to awareness. Students are invited to wear red to signify the day.

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

Every day, our teachers are making a positive difference – creating opportunities for their students, empowering minds of our young people and proudly teaching our state's future leaders, innovators and influencers.

World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank teachers for the important role they play across our school community – inside our classrooms and out in the community.

This year, World Teachers' Day will be celebrated on Friday 25 October, 2019 and once again we would love our Edens Landing Families to be involved in this process.

World Teachers’ Day at Edens Landing State School is not about purchasing gifts for teachers but rather bombarding them with e-mails or letters/notes/cards expressing appreciation for their efforts. So, please do this during the week leading up to October 25. This gesture only takes a few minutes and yet it means the world to the person receiving it.

We always include a morning tea component to our celebrations, so this year we are again inviting parents to make a plate of sweet or savoury treats that could be on offer to our Teachers to help celebrate the day. It would be great to have some gluten free and vegetarian options included and items can be delivered Thursday afternoon or on Friday morning to the office. Some refrigeration will be available. The teachers were all very touched by the kind words which were delivered along with the goodies last year.

Of course if there are other things you want to do to thank your children’s teachers as individual families or as class groups, please feel free to do so. Our teachers are amazing, dedicated people who invest a huge amount into each and every student in their care. It is important we recognise their contribution and say thank you.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

Welcome back to term 4, not long now until the end of the year!!

Tuckshop will be running another Subway day on the 6th of December, please stay tuned for more information and notes closer to the date. Again it will be ordering via Flexischools only event.

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we accept cash only over the counter.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during eating time to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I regularly see children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have children coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact by 9am and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
