Leadership Experience.

It was my great pleasure to take a group of our school leaders to a day camp at Runaway Bay Sport & Leadership Excellence Centre. Students talked about personality traits and how they impact on others, enjoyed a run around the track while some of our Paralympians were training and helped each other through team challenges. They ate an athlete’s lunch before heading out to have a go at archery. As you can see from the photo, they were up to this challenge and all challenges which came their way. What an inspirational groups of students we have leading our student body.

STEM IT!

What a great way to finish the term. Students and Adults all enjoying the challenges of activities designed for learning concepts from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There were some amazing K9 robots which made it very difficult to pick the winner. Congratulations to everyone who submitted an entry. The winners name will be the first on our STEM shield which will be displayed in our Resource Centre.

Year 3 Poets

Our Year 3 students have been learning about poetry and how to use poetic devices to create interesting original poems. Here a few snippets form some of their wonderful works.

Emily’s 3H

Title:Silly Supermarket.

I can feel:

Frozen ice cream, tickling my warm tongue ooo, Frozen air from the freezer whoo-who.
Tummy rumbling, gurgle glush,
Excited for ooshies that make us rush.

Harsimrat 3W

Title: Beautiful Beach

I can Hear:

Seagulls screeching in the sky as they eat.
Splish, splosh as people quickly swim to escape the heat.
Wild wind whooshing past kids as they run,
Splishing slowly in the water and having lots of fun.

Kalle 3B

The shining, shimmering, blue, salty water on the shore,
Dark green seaweed and bright blue coral lay still on the ocean floor.
The burning, blazing sun, high up in the sky,
Every time I get salty water in my eyes, it stings and makes me cry.

Nevaeh 3S

Title: Beach Beauty

I can see:

Perfect people prancing joyfully across the sandy ground,
Soft, silky sand like mud stretching endlessly all around,
Crazy, cheeky children crafting sandcastles cheerfully in a secret place,
Ravishing rays of sunshine shining brightly on a person's face.

Hannah 3V

Title: Life on a farm

I can feel:

A soft woolly coat as I rapidly sheer a huge fat ram,
Wind from the windmill blows soothingly swaying my hair towards the dam.
Long lofty lovely freshly mowed grass tickles my feet as I walk on it,
Blazing heat in droughts burn the scorching ground.

Year 5 Camp

Last week our Year 5 students attended their two day school camp at the Camp Laurence Outdoor Education Centre. They left full of excitement and a little bit of apprehension about what was ahead of them. They threw themselves into every challenge and activity and showed their teachers how determined they can be. The bus ride home was considerable quieter, with many students sleeping after their big adventure.

These experiences for our students are only possible through the hard work and personal generosity of our staff. Many hours are put into the organisation to make the camp run smoothly, then teachers give up a night with their own families to support their students. If you haven’t already done so. Please take the time to thank the staff who made this camp possible and an enjoyable experience for your children.

Leadership 2020

This year we are offering all Year 5 student the opportunity to receive a Senior Badge. Only students who are successful in their application for a senior badge will be eligible to apply for leadership positions next term. Please support you child to complete their paper work and return it so the applications can be processed promptly.

Year 6 information – Transition to High School

Transition to high school is also about the social and emotional changes students will encounter. At times, this can cause anxiety for some of our transitioning students.

Anxiety

  • Normal to experience anxiety and worry.
  • It helps us to respond efficiently to threat and danger.
  • Helpful versus not helpful behaviours
  • Ongoing worry or fear associated with a situation
  • Anxiousness stops your child participating in activities
  • Interferes with ability to complete activities in comparison to peers
  • Worries are disproportionate to event
  • Anxiety – affects one in 14 children and young people (Beyond Blue, 2019)

What does anxiousness look like?

Physical

  • Stomach aches, diarrhoea, headaches, sleepiness, trouble sleeping alone, nightmares, difficulty joining in to group activities,

Emotional

  • Irritability, difficulty concentrating, crying, requires frequent reassurances, oversensitivity to criticism or feedback
  • Avoidance of situations/presentations/school/events/party
  • Exhibiting excessive perfectionism when completing a task
  • Negative thinking and always expecting the worst

What’s the difference between Anxiety and Stress?

  • “With stress, we know what’s worrying us. But with anxiety, you become less aware of what you’re anxious about [in the moment] and the reaction becomes the problem.”
(David Spiegal, Assoc Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences, Stanford University)

Strategies to support anxiousness in children

  • Provide validation - It’s okay to feel worried! It’s normal!
  • Teach alternatives – breathing techniques, mindfulness, talking to friends.
  • Model helpful coping – verbalise “This looks a bit scary, but I’ll give it a go.”
  • Recall situations where they’ve succeeded despite being anxious, to strengthen their self-belief they can cope with and manage their anxiety
  • Physical activity and engagement in pleasurable activities
  • Help build resilience –try to support independence to solve issues

If you are concerned…

  • See your GP – A Mental Health Care Plan may be helpful
  • Flag it with the Guidance Officer at the high school who can support a plan of attack

Typically, anxiety can be short lived and may disappear as an individual develops coping strategies and learns to deal with stressful situations.

PBL News

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Each week, teachers explicitly teach the Rule of the Week through an inquiry cycle, which involves modelling, practicing, prompting, monitoring and reinforcing expected behaviours across various school environments. These lessons focus on specific aspects of our school expectations, stemming from, “As a learner, I am safe, I am respectful and I am responsible”.

Rule of the Week

For weeks 9 and 10 the rule of the week has been ‘I am safe when I keep my hands, feet and objects to myself’. These lessons focus on the importance of keeping their hands, feet and objects to themselves. The students have been learning how to play and resolve conflicts with others without using their hands, feet or objects. Please continue discussions at home with your child/ren about the importance of keeping their hands, feet and objects to themselves. This is a necessary skill for all children to master and use in their daily lives.

This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

Chappy News

Hi Everyone,

I can’t believe that term 3 is over, 2019 is going to be gone before we know it.

This has been a big term for the school but it has been great to be a part of it all.

The biggest highlight for me this term was definitely the Mother/Daughter Chic Chat Evening on the 6th of September, which was held at City Hope Church Holmview. We had 8 girls attend with their mothers and enjoy a wonderful evening together. We played games, listened to some very inspiring women such as Karen Murphy the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce President. Some lovely ladies from the church volunteered their time to serve the mothers and daughters on the night and they were truly well looked after.

The girls all received the title of princess and given a tiara at the end of the evening.

Next term breakfast club, SUPA Club and Chappy’s Parents Afternoon will return as normal. The next afternoon tea will be on the 10th of October from 2pm to 3pm in Conference room 1 in the library. Hope to see you there.

I wish you all a safe, happy and enjoyable the holiday break. See next term.
