Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Edens Landing State School is a GREAT school! Each day I see a committed group of teachers passionate about student learning and growth. As a school team, we want to make a difference in the lives of all students. Please continue your communication with your child’s classroom teacher, the parent/teacher interviews is another opportunity for communication.

We have over 750 students enrolled at ELSS. This means we have many different learners, stages of learning, level of maturity, understanding and ability to regulate emotions. This is a positive to schooling as it allows students to embrace differences and diversity. Let us all be patient with each other to allow learning to happen.

School events-

Book week Parade was amazing (image below), Junior sports day, Crazy sock day.

Staff news

We welcome our new Literacy Support Teacher- Emily Roberston. Emily will be in classrooms supporting students to succeeding in literacy development appropriate for their age level.

BULLYING- NO WAY is EVERYDAY at ELSS

Identifying whether a situation is bullying or something else helps to determine the most appropriate response.

Bullying requires schools and families to look beyond the observable behaviour of students to what is going on behind the scenes.

We deal with the behaviour but need to ask- “What is the behaviour telling us?”

As a school we are working through our processes, as a parent you can access strategies at the link below:

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/

Edens Landing SS does not tolerate Bullying.

Report Cards

Please check that your child has brought home their letter regarding Email addresses. ELSS will be sending report cards home by email in Term 4. Please assist us by making this a smooth transition, by returning the form to the office for checking

Homework @ ELSS- 2019

Homework is anything that children do outside the normal school day that contributes to their learning in response to guidance from the school. Homework encompasses a whole variety of activities instigated by teachers and parents to support children’s learning.

Research tells us that homework-

  • improves a child's thinking and memory.
  • helps children develop positive study skills and habits that will serve them well throughout life.

To support EVERY student succeeding, ELSS encourages the below homework guidelines for 2019.

Students in Prep to 2- 15 minutes a day (regularly sharing/ reading books: Practice of sight/ keywords, spelling or maths)
Students in Year 3 to 5- 20 minutes a day (reading – independently, Practice spellings, longer maths or topic based activity)
Student in Year 6- 30 minutes a day (reading and research. research task related to curriculum work and additional items determined)

In 2020, ELSS will have an aligned Homework policy to ensure EVERY student succeeds. We are partners in learning

Together, lets promote learning for EVERY student succeeding

Deputy Principal’s News

Enrol for Prep 2020

If your child is born between 1 July2014 - 30June 2015 please complete an “Intention to Enrol” at the school administration office as soon as possible as we are arranging interviews now and play dates starting SOON.

Years ago I remember walking through some classrooms and all the children’s work looked the same; the teacher had photocopied a picture and the children had coloured it in. I am so glad that here at Edens landing the children from as young as prep are given the opportunity to demonstrate their creative ability not only in writing but also in in illustrating their work. I am amazed with the quality of writing and art work our children are demonstrating.

Learning through play

Games can exercise children’s executive function and self-regulation skills—and allow them to practice these skills—in different ways. At this age, children start to enjoy games that have rules, but do so with widely varying levels of interest and skill.

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, I hope you have a wonderful day. My last parents afternoon tea we had the pleasure of having two fathers along, which was great to see. Our next afternoon tea will be on the 12th of September from 2pm to 3pm in the library. Hope you can make it.

This term I have be running the girl’s year 6 Chic Chat program which will be finish soon with a Mother and Daughter Evening. As part of the program we had a Day Of Influence in the MPC Hall with other local schools. This is a great day that all the girls talk about for quite a while. We have a guest speaker called Trish Jackson who is an inspirational speaker. Trish was born without arms due to her mother being given the drug Thalidomide. She was also born with other medical issues.

Her mother encouraged independence and would never allow her to give up. Trish talks to the girls about her life and what it was like growing up and shares her remarkable artwork that she creates with her feet. We had a great day and finished off the day trying to write and draw with our toes.

Some of the feedback we received from the girls about what they learnt was:

  • to never give up
  • give things a go
  • make an effort to try and be happy
  • that we are all special
  • not to judge someone from their appearance
  • to be kind to others

I have had a change in location for my lunch time activities this term. In the first break on Tuesdays and Thursday I am now located in the first room in G-Block. We have been playing a card game called Dobble most breaks.

Also on the 12th of September it is RUOK? Day.

R U OK? Day is an annual day in September dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference and even save lives. R U OK? is a not-for-profit suicide prevention organisation founded by Australians, Gavin Larkin and Janina Nearn in 2009. In a 12 month period, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt, with an average of 2,320 people suiciding every year. In fact, around 45 per cent of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, while 20 per cent are affected every year. The Foundation works collaboratively with experts in suicide prevention and mental illness, as well as government departments, corporate leaders, teachers, universities, students and community groups. Its activities also align with the Australian Government's LIFE Framework. If you are looking for information on ways you can contribute to the cause, or help someone you know, the R U OK? website provides extensive resources for people.

This is a great day to highlight mental health and how we can help and support others, not only just on the 12th of September but every day. Please take some time to check out their website.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS.

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below:

With only 2 weeks left of the term stock will be run down for holidays. Every effort will be made to fulfil orders but please be aware that some items may not be available. Items will be updated on Flexischools as to their availability. Please check out our Facebook page for any relevant tuckshop information.

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we accept cash only over the counter.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during eating time to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I regularly see children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have children coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
