Deputy Principal’s News

What an exciting start to Term 3. Our students are working hard on the curriculum which has been carefully designed by their teachers. As always, teachers greatly appreciate offers of help from parents and guardians. If you have some time to offer, please contact your child’s class teacher or the office as we are always looking for willing helpers in the classrooms, garden, kitchen and other projects which pop up from time to time.

STEM IT!

Save the date -Thursday September 19 is this year’s STEM IT! Celebration day. Families are invited to join in the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fun with their children. Activities will be set up around the school and students and their families will be able to participate in the activities.

This year’s challenge is to design and create a K9 (canine) Robot from recycled materials. It must have at least one interactive element. You will also need to make a poster to explain how you made it, so make sure you take lots of cool pictures of each step!!

Examples of interactive elements:

  • Lights up
  • Moves legs/head/tail/blinks
  • Makes a sound/plays a song

Here are some helpful websites for ideas:

  • How to make walking robot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH7QMsbMowo
  • How to make robotic dog using DC motor at home

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQoV2o2mbIY

Get your whole family involved in this competition!

All entries are due on Thursday 5 September.

Your creation must be handed into the Resource Centre with the competition entry form. All entries will be displayed in the Resource Centre for viewing during Week 9 of Term 3. Students and parents will vote for the best K9 robot in Week 9. Remember, your K9 robot must be made of recycled materials, and must have at least one interactive element. The entry that meets the criteria and has the most votes, will be the winner! The winner will be announced on the day of this year's STEM It! Expo, Thursday 19 September, and will receive the first STEM trophy.

If you have any of the following items and are happy to donate them for use on our STEM EXPO, please drop them at Mrs Gibson’s office. We would greatly appreciate your help with these items which will be used by students on the day.

Any donations of any of the following items would be greatly appreciated.

Match sticks, Cardboard (old cereal boxes, food packaging, sheets of cardboard A4, old folders, any cardboard boxes), Paper cups, Plastic cups, Newspaper, Paper clips, PVA Glue, Masking Tape, Sticky Tape, Rubber bands, Paddle pop sticks, Mini marshmallows, Split pins, Pom poms (mini), Blu-tack, Glitter, Confetti, Playing cards, Cellophane, Jam jars/glass jars, Clear contact.

Year 5 Camp

This term sees our Year 5 students attending their two day camp at the Camp Laurence Outdoor Education Centre on September 12 and 13. This is an amazing opportunity for your son or daughter to develop confidence, independence and build leadership qualities. All payments must be made no later than August 14. This is an important event for our Year 5 students and I encourage all students to attend. If you have any concerns about camp, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Year 6 information – Transition to High School

Moving from primary to secondary school, or high school, is a big transition. It can be a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but it can also be challenging or worrying for many children. You can help by making sure your child is prepared and feels supported. The first step towards preparing your child is to make the decision as to which high school your child will attend. Parents will need to speak with the High School and collect enrollment forms. All high schools in this area are enrollment managed, which means you have to be living in the catchment area to attend unless there is a sibling already attending. Over the coming months, each high school will offer transition and orientation days. It is important that parents know when these are and ensure their child attends. Being familiar with their new school helps with reducing the anxiety of starting somewhere unfamiliar.

Student Council Jeans for Genes Day Friday 2nd August

Thank you to all of the families who supported this Student council fundraiser. We raised over $360 for this very worthwhile cause.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2019 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 11th September 2019, from 3:20pm-6:30pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child will be required to attend this meeting so they can discuss how they are going with their learning.

Bookings for interviews will open on the 12th of August and close on the 10th of September. Go to the website below - (Link is available through the school newsletter and school’s web page)

Enrol for Prep 2020.

Do you have a child or know of one who is eligible for Prep in 2020?

Children born 1 July 2014 – 30 June 2015 are eligible for prep 2020. Please come to the office to complete the intention to enrol forms. Interviews are being conducted throughout the term.

Book week

This year the theme to Book Week is “Reading is my Super Power”. Classrooms will be decorated in themes across the year levels and children will be involved in some exciting and engaging activities throughout the week including a Poetry Quest, Mystery Readers, Visiting Authors, the Great Book Swap, and of course the Dress up Parade on Friday 23 August.

Great Book Swap –

As part of our Book week celebrations we will be holding a Book Swap. All students are invited to donate a book for the swap. On the Friday students can ‘buy’ a book for a $1 donation.

Donations of books can be brought to Ms Grant’s room.

I was very happy to see the Year 1 and Year 2 students have been working very hard at their story writing.

Importance of playing games

Last weekend I spent some time with my grandkids, including teaching them to play “Go Fish”. It was a lot of fun, even though it was quite challenging to teach them the rules about taking turns and being fair (as the older one was definitely at an advantage).

I reflected on the importance of playing games as I am aware that we live in an age where children are more likely to play on devices by themselves than play a card game. Though some of the games they play on a device can be educational as well as entertaining, there is nothing like card games that require interaction also help develop social skills.

Games that require players to remember the location of particular cards are also great at exercising working memory. At the simplest level, there are games such as Concentration, in which children uncover cards and have to remember the location of matches. At a more complicated level are games that require tracking types of playing cards as well as remembering their locations, including Go Fish, Old Maid, Happy Families, and I Doubt It.

So I encourage you over the next few weeks to spend a little time and play a good old fashioned memory game.

The following links have some great ideas.

We are in the process of organising a playgroup for children aged 3-5 starting in a few weeks. Please watch for the information through our Facebook page.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES (SSS)

At Edens Landing State School our whole school approach to support every student succeeding is based on the Three-Tier Response to Intervention with three stages of increasing intensity of instruction for all students. This approach ensures a cohesive response to diverse learning needs and consistent practice in a culture of ongoing achievement.

Tier 1: Differentiated and Explicit Teaching: for all students
Teachers provide differentiated and explicit teaching to respond to the learning needs of all students as a regular part of curriculum provision. Adjustments are provided that will not impact the integrity of the unit taught.

Tier 2: Focused Teaching: for identified students
Focused teaching for groups and individuals is planned in response to formative assessment. It includes teaching understandings and/or skills from particular content descriptions through effective pedagogical practices that address barriers to learning.

At the same time as focused teaching is being provided, students continue to access the differentiated and explicit teaching planned within the context of the unit being provided to the class.

Tier 3: Intensive Teaching: for a small number of students
Intensive teaching for individual students is provided in response to the analysis of monitoring tasks and diagnostic tools and addressed specific understandings and skills.

At the same time as intensive teaching is being provided, students continue to access the differentiated and explicit teaching planned within the context of the unit being provided to the class.

Following examination of student responses to the differentiated, focused and intensive teaching that has been provided, a small percentage of students may be identified as requiring a different year curriculum in some or all core learning areas. These students are provided with an Individual Curriculum Plan in a reporting period. This will require identifying where students are in the developmental sequence of learning.

Students who may require focused and/or intensive teaching are identified by their class teacher who discusses their data profile with the Deputy Principal. Further support is provided at this meeting with Tier 1 differentiation or a decision is made for the class teacher to present the child at a Student Support Services meeting for review of data.

Tier 2 and/or Tier 3 decisions are made in response to the diverse needs of the student

by the committee.

Focused and intensive teaching acknowledges that all students can learn successfully and achieve when given appropriate learning opportunities and the necessary support. Class teacher consults with parents/carers prior to the their child being reviewed at Student Support Services and feedback of decisions made are provided by the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) after the meeting.

Yr 5 & Yr 6 MIBB Club News

This term, we have begun our ‘Mad Inventors and Busy Builders Club’. Students from Year 5 and 6 come to Ms Alterator’s classroom in Modular 3, on a Monday and Tuesday lunch break. This is where we plan and build our wonderful creations out of recycled materials and paddle pop sticks. Our only rule is that ‘if it moves, you must figure out a way to move it without a motor’. Two days into our club and students are already building items such as a rollercoaster, battleship, bridge, church and an observatory.

It is great to see both boys and girls getting excited about their projects. Students can either work independently, in pairs or groups. They select their own projects and as they develop these, they also build on their collaborative, problem solving and communication skills in a fun environment. We will keep you posted on our progress.

Rule of the Week

This week rule of the week is ‘I am responsible when I am on time’. This lesson focusses on the importance of being time (punctual) to have a greater opportunity for a successful learning experience. Please discuss with the class that being on time is not just about going to class but also being on time for their clubs meeting, instrumental lessons, lunch time club activities etc. This skill also encompasses to their daily lifestyle which they need to master effectively.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS.

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit this link:

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we accept cash only over the counter.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during eating time to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have children coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
