ELSS staff acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Owners and ongoing custodians of the lands on which our school is built and where learning takes place. We pay our respects to Elders, past, present & emerging and recognise their continuing connection to Country and ways of learning over thousands of years.

Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Welcome back to term 3. I hope all of our families and friends shared quality time together. Whilst I spent the majority of the holidays with our Japan Study Tour, I also prioritized some family time. I was pleased to witness our Edens Landing students represent the school proudly in Japan. We are back.

Kokoda students

ELSS are extremely proud of our four students who participated in The Kokoda Challenge at the Gold Coast on Saturday 20 July. They are the first ever Primary school students to complete the 48klms through the hills of the Numinbah Valley, starting at 11am and finishing between 1am and 3am. HUGE thank you to Mr Hopkinson and Mrs Alterator for their leadership and commitment to training from the very beginning. Check out our facebook page for footage.

NAIDOC celebration

A sincere thanks to John Briggs, Loganlea State High School, Jane Dooley, Edens Landing Police beat, MP Bert Van manen, Beenleigh State High School and Michaela Williams for attending, contributing, performing and engaging with our ELSS NAIDOC celebration. The celebration was another step forward at ELSS to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Also our work of embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Our staff went further with the celebration and successfully conducted indigenous games for all our students. Thanks to Fay, Sarah and Beth for all the planning and engagement for staff and students to learn different indigenous games and further understand the connection culture. Check out Facebook for footage of the day.

Pictured is- Jane Dooley, Beth Tailby, Fay Harding, Sarah Stevenson and John Briggs.

Students set for success

Research shows that poor school attendance is associated with:

  • lower academic achievement including literacy and numeracy
  • early school leaving
  • leaving school with fewer qualifications
  • reduced opportunities for students to learn and access educational resources, further limiting achievement
  • further absenteeism in higher year levels
  • increased alcohol, tobacco, and substance use in adolescents.

Please ensure your child is at school every day. EVERY DAY COUNTS! Please let the school know if we can support you futher.

Winter uniforms

With the chilly weather upon us, please ensure that your children are abiding by the school dress code. School winter jumpers, jackets, pants are available from the uniform shop. If you are not able to obtain the school jumper, please ensure that your children are wearing a navy blue jacket. While we don’t want your child to be cold, now is the time to organise a jumper/jacket that meets the school dress code.

Staff news

Thanks to Anthea, Kristen and Leo for supporting 12 students explore the Japan Study Tour. The student growth in 9 days was very encouraging. Their dedication and attention to detail ensured everyone gained much from the tour.

A welcome return to Cheryl from her travels/adventure. Also, Karen from injury.

Welcome back Casey Moore our HOC and Stephanie Brosnan our Year 3 CT.

Our workforce grows this term as we continue to use our time effectively- We welcome Sam Russel as our Student engagement teacher, Linette Walker our new PED coach. We also welcome our 2 new LLI teacher aides- Hayley Muchow and Kimberley Sutcliffe.

Future appointments for Literacy teacher and PED coach will follow.

BULLYING- NO WAY is EVERYDAY at ELSS

We are aware of the potential harmful effects of bullying, including online bullying (cyberbullying) on students and take reports of bullying seriously. We have a range of actions to address bullying that I will share with our community to ensure we have a consistent approach. The primary aim of our response is to restore a positive learning environment for all students. Positive responses are based on the understanding that students are in the process of learning how to be a member of the school and wider community.

Edens Landing SS does not tolerate Bullying.

HELP WANTED

The P&C in our tuckshop is in need of your HELP. If you are able to volunteer any time please contact Annette via the link below or see her at the tuckshop any morning.

The more helpers = less time needed. Without your support the canteen operations and options will unfortunately be reduced.

GARDEN renewal and beautification project is taking place over the next several months. Please be patient if it causes any inconveniences. I look forward to our finished product.

Together, lets promote learning for EVERY student succeeding

QPARENTS

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Academic report cards
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details
  • Upcoming events list showing school events, exam and assessment dates, and excursions.

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.

To register you will need your child’s EQ ID number – you can find this on your child’s report card or a previously issued invoice in your child’s name. If you do not want to register, you may advise us not to send you any more invitations, and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents.

QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

More information about QParents can be found via the link below.

Update from YMCA our onsite OSHC service

Dear Eden’s Landing State School,

The YMCA OSHC team would like to take this opportunity to thank Eden’s Landing State School for your continued support of the service.

Please rest assured that we are doing all we can to provide stability to the service and provide the high quality care that you are accustomed to.

We have advertised for the Coordinator and Educator roles and are currently engaged in the process of finding the best fit for Eden’s Landing State School. We are confident that we will be able to improve the staff turnover at the service over the next couple of months and provide some certainty for the children and families.

The YMCA does not take our responsibility lightly as the caretakers of OSHC at your school and we still firmly believe we are the industry leaders in providing quality Outside School Hours Care. We will continue to work closely with the Eden’s Landing State School Principal and Administration Team, the P&C, Parents, Children and external stakeholders.

The YMCA is committed to providing high quality Outside School Hours Care at your school and look forward to continual improvement and development.

Kind regards,

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is already shaping up to be a busy term. Lunch time activities are back into full swing already. One of the many activities offered to students during second play break is our craft club. This club provides opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities, from bubble blowing, play dough, painting and construction right through to learning how to code using the school robotics equipment. If anyone you know has unwanted craft items at home please send them our way. We are always looking for anything which can be used. The items most needed are fabric, glue, scrap booking resources and items to glue to constructions (feathers, sequins, pompoms etc.) All unwanted craft items can be used and will be greatly appreciated. Please leave any items at the office.

Student Council Jeans for Genes Day Friday 2nd August

On Friday 2nd August, students are asked to wear their jeans and bring a gold coin donation to support this great cause. Students may wear jeans of any colour with their uniform shirt and jumper. If students own a denim jacket or skirt, they may wear that in place of their school jacket or shorts/skorts. Students who do not wish to wear jeans are expected to be in full school uniform.

What is Jeans for Genes? Jeans for Genes is the iconic fundraising campaign of Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Jeans for Genes was established in 1994 by Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, cancer, and epilepsy.

1 in 20 kids is born with a genetic disease or birth defect. You likely know and care about someone affected.

Genetic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in kids under four and the main cause of ongoing hospitalisation. To fight this epidemic, we need more research.

Every Minute Counts

As the cold weather sets in, we are seeing a growing number of students coming to school late.

As a school community, we place great importance on students being punctual to school and to lessons. Lack of punctuality affects learning and behaviour not only of the student who is late, but of other learners in the class due to the disruption caused as student enter after the lesson has started and as the teacher is required to recap on missed learning for those who arrive late. This reduces learning time for all students of the class.

At Edens Landing State School, our expectation is that students are at school waiting in the designated places no later than 8.40am, so they are ready to enter class and begin learning at 8:50am. Similarly, students are expected to return to class promptly after each break.

Every minute of learning is important. Please support us in ensuring your child arrives on time, in correct uniform and with all the equipment they require, ready to work hard every day.

Enjoy More Time to Prepare

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the lessons to come. They have all the time they need to literally and figuratively wake up. Showing up on time can enhance the often-jarring transitioning between sleepy drives to school to concentrating on the day’s first lessons. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus.

Never Miss Important Information

Arriving to school after classes have begun can cause students to miss more than just the introduction to a new lesson. Teachers often share important information: reminders of upcoming events, class trips, classroom rules, project due dates and other school-related specifics. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event.

Year 5 Camp

This term sees our Year 5 students attending their two day camp at the Camp Laurence Outdoor Education Centre on September 12 and 13. This is an amazing opportunity for your son or daughter to develop confidence, independence and build leadership qualities. All payments must be made no later than August 14. If you are finding it difficult to meet this deadline, please see our helpful office staff for assistance. This is an important event for our Year 5 students and I encourage all students to attend. If you have any concerns about camp, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2019 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 11th September 2019. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child will be required to attend this meeting so they can discuss how they are going with their learning. A note containing further information will be sent home in the near future.

Deputy Principal’s News

Exploring the world and the diverse cultures is a passion of mine. I believe that when we have the opportunity to interact with people from different cultures we expand our understanding of the world and develop tolerance and acceptance of others.

At Edens Landing we take the opportunity do this through hosting and embarking on study Tours.

As many of you may know I had the wonderful opportunity to accompany 12 of our senior students to Japan during the winter break. It was amazing to watch these children grow in confidence as we explored a new culture throughout the week. Travelling on public transport, visiting World Heritage sites and places of significance, exploring temples and shrines, and enhanced the cultural experience. They also had the opportunity to try new foods and soon learned the value of money and how to make it last longer to get the things they really wanted.

This past week we have hosted a group of 16 students from Kinmen County, Taiwan. The students experienced classroom lessons, including PE, Music, Robotics, Cooking and Gardening. They joined in our day to day life of school including the NAIDOC activities, visiting classrooms and experienced our food through our ‘tuckshop’. Thank you to everyone who welcomed our visitors. I am proud to think that Edens Landing is a school of choice for visiting schools.

Dear parents, guardians and carers

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy.

https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal.

https://www.nccd.edu.au/

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.

Tuckshop News

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we accept cash only over the counter and order online Flexischools.

Tuckshop News

Welcome back to term 3, time has certainly flown by this year. Its wonderful to see all our prep and new children becoming familiar with the tuckshop and I am slowly recognising them and remembering names.

I have recently posted on our Facebook page about needing help in the tuckshop, I have had some absolutely wonderful people respond and I am still in the process of sorting out exact days and times for people to come and help. Once I have done that then I will post a roster on our Facebook page and in our newsletter. Thank you to everyone who has offered help, it is very much appreciated.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day which are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their desingated eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during eating time to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have children coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
