Principal’s News

Hi ELSS families and community,

Our 2019 priority is an aligned culture that promotes learning for EVERY student succeeding.

There are many reasons to celebrate the great things at Edens Landing! From dressing up as pirates, learning about reconciliation, athletics, music concerts, chess, our wonderful cleaning team, Bush Dance preparation, Band Jam, KOKODA hikes, the growing kitchen garden and happy/healthy students.

The Culture at Edens Landing is developing- EVERY student Succeeding!

As we move forward with learning and culture, we have progressed some planned maintenance tasks-

Sandstone blocks, walkways replaced, smoothing concrete paths, footprints/‘walk’ words and pathway centre lines installed, aerated oval, yellow high visibility lines and bathroom upgrades.

Free online positive parenting help now available

The Triple P — Positive Parenting Program really is for every family with the popular Triple P Online for parents of primary kids.

These programs provide the tools to tackle all of parenting’s big (and little) problems.

In the latest issue of the Queensland Tippaper, Triple P’s free parent newspaper, you can read how one Queensland mum, and soon-to-be teacher, stumbled on a great way to break down barriers in school communities.

The latest Tippaper also includes your views on the things you love and find challenging about parenting; a feature on how to put more art and creativity into life; quirky family festivals; details on free positive parenting support, and lots more!

The Tippaper is out now in print and online. And you can also read more on our parent website about free parenting positive support including Triple P Online:

Minimum age requirement for social media accounts

Each social media site and app has its own criteria for minimum age requirements. Popular apps such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat require a user to be at least 13 years of age to create an account. For more information, parents can access the eSafety Commissioner’s advice on how to navigate key online milestones

Winter uniforms

With the chilly weather upon us, please ensure that your children are abiding by the school dress code. School winter jumpers, jackets, pants are available from the uniform shop. If you are not able to obtain the school jumper, please ensure that your children are wearing a navy blue jacket. While we don’t want your child to be cold, now is the time to organise a jumper/jacket that meets the school dress code.

Congratulations and Farewell Rachel Pope

It is with great delight and sadness that we say goodbye to Rachel as she has been successful in her application for Head of Curriculum (HOC) at Yarrabilba State School. Rachel starts in term 3 and begins the exciting journey as their school’s first ever HOC. Rachel has been a cornerstone of this school for many, many years and her experience, knowledge and skills will be sorely missed in her absence. For over 16 years she has impacted the lives of many student and teachers. ELSS thanks Rachel for her commitment and drive for student outcomes. Please join me in congratulating Rachel!

Executive Leadership Team

A few changes for the team over the last weeks of term 2. Deputy Principal Cheryl Gibson is off on long service leave, we are fortunate to have Karen Collishaw step into this role as DP and Katie Ambrose step into HOSES.

Together, lets promote learning for EVERY student succeeding

Deputy Principal’s News

While Mrs Gibson has been on long service leave, I have been filling her shoes as Deputy Principal. Over the last few weeks I have enjoyed visiting classrooms and seeing many students engaged in their learning, preparing for the Bush Dance and starting to unwind now that assessment is finished for the term.

BUSH DANCE 2019

Our Annual Bush Dance is finally here. Thank you to all of the families who donated items for our stalls. It shows what amazing people we have supporting our school. Please bring the whole family along to enjoy the evening. Food will be available and heaps of music and fun to fill the night. The mounted Police will again be there to help us on the night along with Luke and Jade (our local Police Beat).

The students and teachers have been practising very hard this week and are excited to perform their dances along with our favourite band, the Ran Tan Bush Band. Stalls, entertainment, food and activities for the whole family promise to keep us all busy on the night. Entry will be a gold coin donation with all proceeds going towards our Kitchen Garden Project.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff have been busy baking delicious cakes to tempt you with your cup of coffee/tea. If you have baked goods to contribute could you please deliver them to Mrs Gibson’s office or the Kitchen on the morning of the Bush Dance.

With the help of our staff we have many activities organised on the night – Bean Bag Toss, Jar Guess, Face Painting & Hairspray, Quoits, Lucky Dip, Knock Them Down.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families this Friday 21 June enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Date to remember: Family Fun Day – Celebration of Learning Friday 28 June.

YEAR 5 Camp 2019

Our Year 5 camp will take place next term 12 and 13 September. Last day for payment 14 August. This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a short stay away from home, and to build strong leadership skills. Camp is designed for encouraging personal growth and building resilience in all students. Now that we are nearly at the end of Term 2, I’m sure the Year 5 students are becoming excited about the activities that await them on camp.

Learning in classrooms

It’s amazing how far the children have come in these first 6 months of the year. The prep students have really settled in and many are not only learning letters and sounds but beginning to experiment with writing words. The children have all progressed well, and become more confident and proud of their work.

This is due to their Positive Growth Mindset. No matter how hard the work gets we don’t give up, rather we do our best and each time we practice we do a little better. Kids with a growth mindset believe their abilities can improve over time. By comparison, kids with a fixed mindset think their abilities are a set trait that can’t change, no matter how hard they try.

Developing the right mindset early on is crucial for a full, big life. When kids learn that putting forth effort and using the right strategies can make them smarter, they try harder and achieve more. When they know their brains are capable of growing, amazing things can happen!

Please follow the link to learn more about Growth Mindset.

Toys At School

We all enjoy watching our children play together and enjoy their schoolyard games. For this reason we have purchased a variety of games and activities that are available for the children to use.

Lately, some disagreements about toys (including BeyBlades, footballs, and trading cards) are causing disruption to classroom learning, especially when students are swapping or trading parts/ cards.

Our school handbook clearly states that

Children should not bring any toys, valuables and electronic devices to school. Many of these items can not be named with loss and or damage to these items often causing distress. While teachers are supportive and vigilant regarding such items they naturally cannot take responsibility for them.

When issues arise between students regarding toys it impacts on class learning. Please encourage your child/children to leave their toys at home.

International Visitors

Early next term we are hosting a group of 17 students from the Kinmen Provence of Taiwan. These students will join in with some classes to experience what school is like in Australia. Please welcome them when you see them around our school.

Chappy News

Hi Everyone,

Here we are nearly halfway through the year and it has been a busy one.

Friday 7th of June we had our annual Beenleigh Chaplains fund raising dinner where we work as a team to raise funds to help keep us in the schools for the hours that we allocated. We were able to raise over $15 000 with the support of school staff and community members. For this we are very grateful, so thank you.

27th of June the year 6 girls that are doing Chic Chat this term will be attending a Day of Influence where they will get to hear Trish Jackson speak. Trish is a survivor of the drug Thalidomide, she was born in Townsville North Queensland in 1962, with 3 tiny fingers on each underdeveloped hand and her tiny hands are attached to her shoulders as she was born without arms. She also had six holes in her heart and under developed lungs. All birth defects were due to Thalidomide marketed as a wonder drug for morning sickness it was claimed to be safe for women and child. Despite the best medical opinions that she would not survive, she survived.

Trish gives unpaid talks to about 50 Queensland schools each year, spreading a positive message to children and teenagers about acceptance of those who are different, and about pushing through when life is weighing you down.

So this is a great opportunity for the girls. Next term there is an opportunity for more year 6 girls to participate in Chic Chat.

On the first week of the holidays from the 3rd to the 5th of July, I will be a leader at the local Chappy day camp called,’ Believe it or what’. The cost of the 3 days is $35 and there are some interesting electives children can choose from. Students who attended last year have been asking when the camp is and are eager to come again. For registration and more information you can use this link.

There will also be flyers coming home this week.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS.

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2019 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.

Tuckshop News

CLOSED LAST DAY OF SCHOOL 28 June – For cleaning.

Tuckshop does not offer EFTPOS, we accept cash only over the counter.

Our school has two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during play time (1pm – 1.25pm) to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have had a few children this term coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.

Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.
