Principal’s News

Welcome back to Term 2 at Edens Landing SS! I hope your Easter school holidays were full of fun, laughter and chocolate. I spent some time with my family out on a farm in Central West NSW, the kids enjoyed the space, animals and adventure. These moments are wonderful and I am excited to be back at school.

Term 2 at ELSS will see the development of The Edens Landing Way- A growth mindset for EVERY student succeeding. We strive to develop a culture that promotes learning, a shared belief that EVERY student can succeed. As a team of teachers, staff, parents, carers, school partnerships and students, we can see students unleash their potential.

School update-

  • First Day of Term 2 saw everyone returned happy and healthy.
  • ANZAC Day assembly was a great success. The Choir sang beautifully along with all students preparing their wreath.
  • School Captains, Kokoda Kids, Staff and families marched at the Beenleigh ANZAC Day March.
  • District Cross Country with many students attending to represent ELSS.
  • Giant Zucchini’s picked from garden along with Chef making 30 jars of Rosella Jam.
  • Aeration of Oval happened over the break so oval is looking good.
  • Our PBL feet and lines were painted over the break to help direct students to walk to the left of path.

ANZAC day assembly with our flag monitors and school captains.

Every day counts-

Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.

Why is regular attendance at school important?

Regular school attendance will mean that your child gets a better chance at life. Your child will achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day:

  • they learn better
  • they make friends
  • they are happier
  • they have a brighter future

Student Learning-

Every lesson and every day our wonderful teachers are making a difference for our students. One day’s growth for each day at school. Over the term, teachers set learning goals through the National Curriculum.

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy term. Students have slipped back into learning seamlessly, and it is encouraging to see so many wide-eyed, happy faces when I enter classrooms.

Student Council Fundraiser

Thank you to the families and Staff who very generously donated chocolates and Easter Eggs for the Easter Raffle. We ended up with almost 30 prizes to give out and raised $320. The student council are now working on their next fundraiser for the year.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2019!

Please mark Friday June 21 on your calendar for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance and the Ran Tan Bush Band is coming back to perform. Once again, we will have a smorgasbord of entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Entry will be a gold coin donation as was the case last year.

To make the night successful, we ask for community support in a few ways. First, come and enjoy the night with your children. Invite grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the neighbours next door. The more the merrier. Second, please donate items to the stalls mentioned below. Third, please volunteer to assist teachers or the P&C on the night. Many hands make light work. If you can help on a stall for 15-30 minutes, please let your child’s teacher know. Alternately, stay and help pack down and clean up at the end of the night. All help is greatly appreciated.

The Year 5 cohort are running a Lucky Jar stall. This stall is always a huge hit with families. Year 5 teachers are asking for every child in Year 5 to bring at least one jar filled with anything you like. Suggestions: Lollies, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Bottles can be left at my office. If you don’t have a jar, just send in the items and we will put them in jars for you. Anyone else who has items suitable for this stall are welcome to donate.

The Student Council are once again running the Lob-A-Choc stall on the night. This was a huge success last year with everyone lining up to take a turn, if we get enough chocolate bars we will be able to run two stalls to reduce the time standing in line. In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at my office.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff are always amazing at baking up a storm. Last year we had many families donating baked items which was a much appreciated addition to our stall. Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods is asked to deliver the goods to the office or kitchen in the morning on the day.

We are once again asking parents to volunteer on the night to help the teachers run stalls and activities. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Kokoda 2019

Last weekend, 15 students went to Daisy Hill State Forest and completed a 15km hike, while sixteen students competing in the 30km Kokoda Challenge ventured out to Mudgeeraba State Forest and completed 28km in warm humid conditions. It was a tough hike with the steep climbs and distance really testing them physically and mentally. There were some tears and a few spills but after 9 hours of hiking, the pain was soon forgotten and the challenge was complete.

The students have come a long way since their first hike in February and it is great to see the team spirit develop over those weeks. Watching the students support one another when some are really struggling is one of the many positives that they gain from this program.

There are only four more hikes before the big day on June 1 where the students will participate with hundreds of other people in the Kokoda Challenge.

On April 20, a small group of students finished 41 tough kms from Austinville, over Polly's, part of the Creek circuit and back over Polly's in very wet and slippery conditions, in preparation for the Jim Stillman Cup. Despite the hurdles this group had to overcome they kept pushing forward epitomising what the Kokoda Spirit is all about.

Doug Henderson is the founder of the challenge and recently sent the following message:

“Hi Leo, just read your post. How proud we are at Kokoda Youth Foundation and me personally. Edens Landing should be very proud, you were the first primary school to take on the Kokoda Challenge and many others have followed. Stand tall Leo and all the amazing support people around you. Teachers who go above and beyond and parent as well. You make us all very humble.”

Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 cohort returned from Camp full of excitement and appreciation for their amazing teachers. It was certainly a different group of children (and teachers) returning than the buzz on the buses leaving on Monday morning. They were all very tired and ready for a good night sleep. I am sure the parents had their work cut out cleaning the mountain of wet and muddy clothes. Please take the time to thank the teachers who made the event both away and at school such a success.

YEAR 5 Camp 2019

Our Year 5 camp will take place next term. This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a short stay away from home, and to build strong leadership skills. Camp is designed for encouraging personal growth and building resilience in all students. The camp also covers a large part of the Year 5 curriculum, so we encourage all year 5 students to attend. Notes will be sent home shortly. If you require a payment plan for camp, please contact the school so arrangements can be made.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our explicit teaching of behaviour expectations will continue throughout the year, focusing on the Rule of the Week – each week teachers explicitly teach lessons which focus on a selected aspect of school expectations.

Teachers will be discussing these with students and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule or strategy.

I am safe by:

controlling my own anger and frustration towards my peers and teachers

I am respectful by:

speaking calmly towards my peers and teachers about my anger and frustration

I am responsible by:

using appropriate strategy to calm myself when I am feeling angry or frustrated

Week 2 and 3 -

Teachers will be explicitly teaching different strategies for students to use when they are feeling angry or frustrated. In Week 2, students will learn about using different calming strategies when they are feeling angry and frustrated. Week 3 will focus on using different breathing strategies when they are feeling angry, frustrated, annoyed or upset.

Deputy Principal’s News

Its great to be back at Edens Landing after visiting family and friends in the UK. As I walk through visiting the classrooms I see that the children are happily engaged in learning, and keen to share their successes.

As a parent and grandparent I often reflect on how we can support the positive attitude towards school life with our young people. I know that if we ask “How was your day today?” Or ‘What did you do at school today?” children tend to give one syllable answers, so I am sharing some questions that parents can ask that may help develop a better picture of what your child is doing at school.

  1. What was the best thing that happened at school today?
  2. Tell me something that made you laugh today.
  3. Where is the coolest place at the school?
  4. Tell me a weird word that you heard today (or something weird that someone said).
  5. How did you help somebody today?
  6. How did somebody help you today?
  7. Tell me one thing that you learned today.
  8. When were you the happiest today?

Chappy News

Hi Everyone,

This term I have been continuing to organise activities such as Uno, Snakes and Ladders, Pick up Sticks and Playdough, in the Resource Centre, meeting room at morning tea.

On second break on Tuesday I have been running the Chic Chat program with some year 6 girls and on Thursdays the SUPA Club program for years 4 and up. These programs both require parent permission and you would have received a letter and returned if your child is participating.

Parent’s afternoon tea will be on Thursday 9th May at 2pm in the meeting room in the Resource Centre, all are welcome to join us for some afternoon tea and relaxed chat.

I have had many parents talk to me about having difficulty managing temper tantrum and anger in their children. This can be very difficult especially if you were not taught how to manage your own anger correctly when growing up.

Children learn to deal with their emotions well when parents help the child to tune into what is experienced, and then tell the child behaviour they expect the child to have when experiencing the emotion that was experienced. When a child learns to manage their emotional responses and they reduce, the child’s emotional intelligence is developing. This helps children also with confidence and self-esteem. I have found a great article at the link below which may give you some helpful tips.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAYS.

Remember, WEDNESDAY is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit.

For every deposit made at school, students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

If your child has lost their book, they can bring their money to school in a sealed envelope with a note on the next School Banking day. We will issue them with a replacement.

Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Edens Landing State School. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below:

Tuckshop News

Welcome back to term 2. I hope everyone had a relaxing break. Have you seen our official P&C Facebook page yet? If not, please search Edens Landing State School P&C Association and click the like button. Important information regarding the Tuckshop will be posted on our P&C page, so have a look to like and follow our page.

The two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during play time (1pm – 1.25pm) to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have had a few children this term coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following procedure occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.
