Principal’s News

A big hello to the Edens Landing SS community!

I am looking forward to engaging with the whole ELSS community and making personal connections for OUR school. I am passionate about leading schools as learning communities for students and staff to thrive. As I navigate through my introduction to the students, staff and families of ELSS, I am looking to build on the positive work already existing here and empower the highly developed staff.

This school is proud of its-

  • Kitchen Garden- the deep learning this provides.
  • Extra Curriculum opportunities- for student engagement in learning
  • Age Appropriate Pedagogy- meeting the needs of each student in their growth
  • Team environment of ELSS staff- working together for EVERY student

At my first staff meeting, I shared how highly I value people and learning. This motto is linked to the Growth Mindset model, lifelong learners and positive behaviour model. I look forward to learning names and putting faces to every member of this school.

It takes a whole community working together for school students to realise their potential, my Leadership is focussed on People driving culture and standards. State Schools are great schools!

I am focused on a curriculum that is not only building the literacy and numeracy skills of our future but embeds inquiry learning to develop critical and creative thinkers and innovative problem solvers.

Student Council Fundraiser

Thank you to the families and Staff members who have very generously donated chocolates and Easter Eggs to kick start the prizes. If you would like to donate Easter items towards this fundraising, please drop your chocolates at the office. The more donations we get the more prizes we can offer. Last year we ended up with almost 20 prizes. It would be great to be able to offer the same again this year.

Year 6 Camp 2019

Notes have already gone home for our Year 6 camp. Thank you to the families who have already returned their notes. Please makes sure all notes are returned promptly so we can finalise the numbers before the end of term. As always, if you are finding it difficult to meet the payment deadline, please speak to the office staff who can assist with a payment plan.

Year 6 Photograph

Due to the wet weather this week, we were unable to set up for the Year 6 Hole group photograph. The photographer will return later in the year to take groups photographs for sports and music and will take the Senior photograph then.

Semester 1 Parent/Teacher Interviews

Thank you to the many parents who braved the threatening bad weather to attend our Term 1 Parent/teacher interviews. It was inspiring to hear our students speaking to their parents about the progress they are making with their learning. Interviews will be held again in term 3. Report cards will be sent home in terms 2 and 4.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day falls on the first Thursday back after the holiday break. Edens Landing State School invites all community members to join us for our ANZAC Day commemoration on Wednesday 24th April.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our explicit teaching of behaviour expectations will continue throughout the year, focusing on the Rule of the Week – each week teachers explicitly teach lessons which focus on a selected aspect of school expectations.

This Term Teachers have taught students how to Talk, Walk and Report when facing conflict along with the revision of other school rules.

The following lessons will take place over the remainder of this term and into next term. Teachers will be discussing these with students and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule or strategy.

Week 9 - No Hat, No Play

Australia has the highest rate of melanoma and other skin cancer in the world (Parkin et al., 1997; Staple et al., 1998). Childhood sun exposure is a particularly important cause of melanoma, so it is important that we reduce childhood exposure to UV rays as much as possible. Hats that provide suitable protection from the sun are legionnaire, bucket and broad-brimmed styles. Caps are not OK. They do not provide adequate protection from UV radiation. The areas where skin cancers commonly occur such as the ears, back of neck and side of the face remain exposed.

Please help us to protect your children by providing an appropriate hat every day.

Week 10 – Playing in the correct areas – Revision of which areas are appropriate for students of each year level to play within along with which areas are not considered safe to play in so are out of bounds.

Week 1 Term 2 - Week 1 - Helping students identify and express feelings

Learning to identify and express feelings in a positive way helps children develop the skills they need to manage them effectively.

Children experience complex feelings just like adults. They get frustrated, excited, nervous, sad, jealous, frightened, worried, angry and embarrassed. However, children usually do not have the vocabulary to talk about how they are feeling. Instead, they communicate their feelings in other ways such as facial expressions, through their body, their behaviour and play. Sometimes they may act out their feelings in physical, inappropriate or problematic ways.

From the moment children are born, they start learning the emotional skills they need to identify, express and manage their feelings. They learn how to do this through their social interactions and relationships with important people in their lives such as parents, grandparents and careers. Being a parent means you’ve got a really important role to play in helping your child understand their feelings and behaviours by modelling how to manage feelings in positive and constructive ways. Many picture books are useful resources when talking to your child about identifying their emotions.

Reading with Children

You can help your child enjoy reading by:

  • Reading aloud together every day
  • Talking about the story and the pictures
  • Choosing books together

Visit your library!

You and your child can borrow books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and more – and it’s free to join. Some libraries also provide free school holiday activities. Many libraries have Better Beginnings Discovery Backpacks, containing puppets and picture books for families to borrow. Here’s some suggestions for great books for children aged 4 & 5 that you can borrow from your local library. To find the public libraries near you, type your postcode in where it says "Find a Library" at the top of this screen.

Can’t get to the library? If you are a member you can access the eLibrary resources for free

Stefanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

Rosie and Ruby, our beautiful ladies, have moved into their wonderful new chook run, over the past week and are absolutely loving it.

A big thank you to Jim Davidson, for donating this absolute palace, to the school. (Jim unfortunately fell gravely ill on Tuesday of this week, and has under gone hours of heart surgery and is now recovering in the ICU of the PA hospital, so please kept this friend of the school in your thoughts).

Also a huge thank you to Mrs Gibson and her husband for clearing the space to allow the chook run to reside in shade and comfort.

We must also thank Mr Steve for, firstly organising the donation of the Chook run, the work he did preparing the area and transporting the run, but also the daily care he is giving the chooks and the extra care during my absences. (He has a new girlfriend, sorry Angi, but Rosie and him are very tight !!!!!!!!!!).

We are now getting eggs most days, which is an exciting occasion when we head there to check.

If you haven’t visited the garden recently, please walk by and have a look, as it is all looking great, with all the new growth.

At the start of next term we will be reaping the benefits of our plantings and have loads of fresh produce for our kitchen.

How great was the beautiful rainfall ,we have experienced, the last couple of weeks. This is why this is the best growing time in Queensland.

Enjoy your home gardens if you have them, if not talk to your children, they should be able to tell you how to build one.
