Principal’s News

We wish to advise that the school’s Principal, Ms Gail Quigley, has needed to take a temporary leave of absence unexpectedly. I appreciate this is short notice and would be grateful if you could please respect Ms Quigley’s privacy at this time.

A process to select an acting principal has been advertised and the process will be finalised in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Mrs Cheryl Gibson has been appointed as the interim Acting Principal to ensure service delivery and the smooth running of the school is maintained.

Student Council Fundraiser

The first fundraiser for the year is an Easter Raffle. Thank you to the families and Staff members who have very generously donated chocolates and Easter Eggs to kick start the prizes. If you would like to donate Easter items towards this fundraising, please drop your chocolates at the office. The more donations we get the more prizes we can offer. Last year we ended up with almost 20 prizes. It would be great to be able to offer the same again this year.

School appropriate Language

As I mentioned on assembly last week, we are having increased incidents of students using inappropriate language at school. Please discuss this issue with your children so they understand that this is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Say No to Bullying Day

Thank you to everyone who participated in our 2019 Say No to Bullying Campaign. We had some lovely displays around the school and on our fence. Unfortunately, we were unable to do the happy face on the oval due to the wet weather.

Year 6 Camp 2019

Notes have already gone home for our Year 6 camp. Thank you to the families who have already returned their notes. Please makes sure all notes are returned promptly so we can finalise the numbers before the end of term. As always, if you are finding it difficult to meet the payment deadline, please speak to the office staff who can assist with a payment plan.

Kitchen Garden Project

As most of you would know, we received two chickens earlier in the year. These have been a great addition to our program. Last week we were very excited to see our first eggs laid. We are now getting an egg most days and are looking forward to an increasing contribution from our lovely chickens.

Deputy Principal’s News

Literacy is key to successful learning – so it is essential that parents take advantage of every opportunity to help children develop their skills. At Edens Landing State School reading every day IS our only homework. Children read at school throughout the day for a variety of reasons – whether it is to gain information around a subject, reading someone’s story, practicing skills or just for fun, the more children see the importance of reading the better they will be.

Brisbane Kids has come up with a few helpful pointers that will turn reading into a fantastic family friendly reading event, including using the 5 Finger test when choosing a book.

Music News

Now that we’re past the midway point of term 1, our music program is in full swing. The year 6 percussion bands are rapidly improving and playing as cohesive units. The choir students are busy preparing for their first performance at the term 2 ANZAC parade (more details to follow).

The Jam Program has already unearthed some talented young musicians who have realised that they have the skills to play instruments that they’ve never picked up before.

A reminder that Mr Hogerheyde is teaching our multi instrumental students each Thursday. Ms Stephenson’s strings lessons continue to take place on Tuesdays.

In the music room, year 5 and 6 students are utilising glockenspiels, bass guitars, keyboards and electric drums to play ‘We will rock you’, in addition to learning about Queen, the band who wrote and performed the famous song.

Year 3 and 4 students are learning how to change chords and play songs on ukuleles. Year 1 and 2 are practicing songs on glockenspiels, while prep students are using untuned percussion instruments to play the beat to a range of songs.

Chappy News

Hi Everyone,

On Thursday afternoon in the Resource Centre at 2pm we had our first parents afternoon tea. It was well attended with 10 parents present and we had some great conversation. The next one will be held next term, in the same location at the same time on Thursday May the 9th. Hoping you can make it.

On Sunday the 17th I have the privilege to be a part of the Junior Quota Fun day, from 1pm to 5pm in the Beenleigh Town Square. This free event is family friendly and support our local community. With live entertainment, teddy bear story time, food trucks, an emergency service vehicle display and more.

International artist Donald James Waters will paint a public art piece to be revealed on the day called ' Beenleigh Tree of Life'. This tree will have leaves with brandings from local business and services. The profits from these leaves will be put back into the community.

The Beenleigh Chaplains are sponsoring a leaf that will be on display on the tree.

Tuckshop News

Coming to the end of term, stock will be run down for the holidays. Every effort will be made to fill orders. Tuckshop will be closed all day on the last day of term for cleaning.

Flexischools is still unfortunately having some issues on a Friday morning with parents ordering on Friday morning and causing a bottleneck for the system and it cannot handle the volume. I have received emails from Flexischools assuring me that they are working on the issue. I do thank all the parents for their patience during this time. I suggest that to overcome any problems you order Thursday evening or before 6.30am Friday morning. When there is a technical issue with Flexischools, either with their app, website or your account, you will have to contact Flexischools, I do not have access to your accounts, nor can I do anything about the website or app. If your child is away and you need to cancel or hold an order, then you contact me. A quick phone call is all that is needed, and I will do my very best to help straighten out any issues you are having. If you are sending messages via our Facebook page, please be aware that I am not able to check it while working.

The two lunch breaks during the day are at 11am and 1pm. First break (11am) is the main food break and is for hot food and sandwiches. Second break (1pm) is a snack food time and no hot food or sandwiches are sold for this break.

First break food ordered at tuckshop is collected by classroom monitors and taken to their respective eating areas. Second break is the break when students must come to the tuckshop in person to collect or buy their food. They must come during play time (1pm – 1.25pm) to collect. Tuckshop closes at 1.25pm. If your child forgets to come and pick up their second break, they can come the next day. Second break orders are kept in tuckshop until end of term.

Money and food sharing are not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students. Please do not send large amounts of money to school with your child. I have had a few children this term coming at second break with very large notes, this is a dangerous practice which can lead to money being lost or stolen.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems.

If your child has forgotten their lunch, the following occurs. The child has their bag checked and if there is no food then they are sent to the office and the office staff will contact parents to approve lunch if tuckshop is what is decided upon. I will then send a yellow note home with the amount owing on it. If you have been contacted by the school when you child is without lunch, please check your child’s bag for this yellow note. Please send payment and the yellow note along with the child the next day.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. Our preferred method of ordering is Flexischools. Flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure the orders are completed and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the Flexischools website. If your child is not at school and not needing their Flexischools order on that day, please contact the tuckshop and inform us so I can cancel the order, if you do not make contact and cancel the order with me then your order will stand, and no refund will be given. If there is no answer, please leave a clear message including child’s name and class. If there are any problems with the Flexischools website and ordering system, please contact them directly.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, Flexischools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

https://www.flexischools.com.au/

Please feel free to contact me if you have any issues with tuckshop or would like to come and volunteer. There is no need to stay the whole day, a couple of hours at the most is normally only what is needed. The tuckshop can only provide lunches to children if volunteers help. Many hands make light work.
