Deputy Principal’s News

The Jacarandas are in full bloom, which signals the rapidly approaching end of the school year. Our school is one of the most beautiful schools I have ever seen, especially at this time of year. 2018 has been a huge year filled with many wonderful educational and fun filled experiences for our students and staff. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who come, help, and support our school. A big thank you also goes to the staff who work tirelessly to ensure every student gets the very best possible outcome, our local adopt-a-cops Luke and Jade who support each and every one of us and to the students who come to school with a smile and willingness to learn. Our school community is certainly a wonderful place in which to raise our children.

Our Kitchen Garden program is growing and has just taken delivery of a load of garden soil in readiness for the addition of several new garden beds. As the school grows, we require additional growing beds to cater for the swelling numbers of students. Even having the sad setback of vandalism, we will be up and running ready for 2019. Thank you to Chef Chris for his never-ending enthusiasm for our program.

As this is the last newsletter for the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and peaceful holiday break, full of family and fun. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2019.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2018

We had a great response to the graduation packs again this year, if you forgot to purchase your child’s graduation pack (which includes the tickets to attend graduation) please contact the office immediately. It is our goals each year to have every year 6 attend graduation on Monday 10 December. This is a big event for our Year 6 students who are very excited to be have their graduation in our hall followed by a disco. If you are having financial difficulties, please speak to the office staff as soon as possible.

Confirming the dress code for graduation

Smart casual (not formal) - School appropriate attire is expected: No midriffs, low cut dresses/tops, short skirts, high heels or excessive make up for the girls. Boys should be dressed neatly, suits are not appropriate but a collared shirt is required (No tee-shirts and board shorts please). It is fun for our Year 6 students to dress up on their special night; however we ask that parents keep the occasion in perspective. This is a Year 6 graduation, not a Year 12 formal.

Once again, Queensland School Photography will be taking photos at the senior graduation evening. Photos will only be taken between 5pm and 6pm at the Prep block prior to the night commencing. These photos can be individuals, family or friends photos. Photos are printed straight away in a 6 x 8” size and are available for purchase only on the night.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 12th of December. This year we will be heading to Movie World for a day filled with rides and adventure. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students.

If you missed the payment date for this event, please contact the school immediately as we would love every Year 6 students to have this wonderful experience.

Students must wear Full School Uniform, Closed in shoes and a hat to attend this excursion.

UNIFORM

As the year moves closer to the end, we are seeing an increasing number of students wearing non-uniform items to school with their uniform. Large bows, ribbons and hair clips, jewellery (other than sleepers/studs, watch or religious or cultural relic), board shorts, undershirts which can be seen, extra-long socks which come above mid-shin, and non-uniform shorts/skirts are not permitted. Please ensure that your child wears school uniform every day. This shows pride in their school and respect for the rules.

It has also been noticed that many young ladies are wearing skirts which are very short with a significantly high split at the front. Please ensure that all skirts are long enough to afford the wearer the appropriate degree of modesty. Just because the skirt is attached to sports briefs, does not make it appropriate to wear.

Deputy Principal’s News

This time of year is so busy with so many opportunities for parents to celebrate children’s learning; swimming in the lower school, Carol’s night, Prep playdate, Year 6 Graduation, Report cards, classroom party day, and finally, Family Fun day!

It’s a great time to look back at all the things your children have achieved this year – they have not only become better at reading and maths, they have become more independent and responsible.

The Year 1’s have been writing procedures – they have created some wonderful sandwich ideas, designed paper planes and then chose to write a procedure on something of their own choice. The results are amazing!

First 5 Forever

This week at playgroup Lisa Burt from the First 5 Forever imitative from Logan Libraries came along to set up a mini library for the group. Each week the children can take home a book, when they swap it they get a star on their ‘library card’ to earn awards. This is a wonderful opportunity for our young ones to enjoy the advantages books and reading.

Up to 90% of brain development happens in the first five years, so make talking, reading and singing with your child part of your daily routine. It’s fun. It helps little brains to grow. And you can do it any place, any time.

For information, ideas and resources to help you make the most of the first five years, visit www.first5forever.org.au.

Holiday safety

With the holidays just around the corner it is time to “brush up” safety rules for the kids – especially our road and water safety rules.

For children, there are some great interactive activities at “Safety Island”. You will need to sign up (for free)

The Safety Educator has a range of information brochures for parents.

Tuckshop News

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all my volunteers that have helped throughout 2018, without this small handful of wonderful people the tuckshop would not be able to run efficiently. Thank you to all and I hope to see you back in 2019.

Reminder - TUCKSHOP WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE WHOLE DAY ON THE LAST DAY OF TERM FOR CLEANING

Next year I will be putting a call out for more volunteers to help in the tuckshop. If you can spare some time to come and help it would be great, as the saying goes…’Many hands make light work’. If there is a large enough volunteer base, then you may only have to chip in once a fortnight or even month. If you cannot stay all day that is fine, sometimes a helping hand during the busy times is all that is needed, before school helping process bags and orders, helping with making sandwiches, popping in to help pack the lunches or even just coming to help serve the children at second break. All help is greatly appreciated and needed.

As per Department of Education requirements anyone who volunteers in the tuckshop will be required to complete the annual Mandatory Training program. This training is very simple and will only take at the most 10 minutes to complete, if you have not completed the training then I can walk you through the requirements before you start. A link to the CVV fact sheet can be found in the Office News section of the newsletter, please take time to read the fact sheet.

With 2 weeks of schools left and stock in the tuckshop is being run down for the holidays. There will be very limited stock of most of the menu and all efforts will be made to supply the children with what they order but please be aware that some items may not be available. I will post on our P&C Facebook page during those last two weeks updating stock availability and flexischools will reflect what is available.

Flexischools removes all class list eg, PH, PC etc from their system during the holidays ready to start with fresh class names next year. As soon as I receive the new list of class names from Admin, I will send them off to Flexischools.

Please take a moment to read about our ordering process. We have an online ordering system called Flexischools. THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Ordering on flexischools has a cut off time of 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are IN AND CONFIRMED BY 8AM or they will not be processed on the flexischool system.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, please call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled so you can be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will still be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left-hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order, child’s name and class on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order.Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.

Any problems or concerns please do not hesitate in contacting me
