Principal’s News

Hello ELSS community

Well we are now over the ‘hump’ week and heading towards the end of the 2018 school year. This is not to say that we are in cruising mode with assessments still being completed, graduation finalising, school leaders elections just to name some exciting things still in store for our students.

Before school arrival

I am noticing that many students are arriving at school well before our preferred time of 8.15am. Some students are here as early as 7.15am. A reminder that there is no supervision of students provided before 8.30am. Having students here early causes many issues as students unsupervised can sometimes make their own ‘fun’ which can lead to inappropriate behaviour. I urge parents to adhere to or suggested drop off times. We have an amazing before school program for parents who need to drop their children off early, YMCA is located at the Multi Purpose Hall. Thankyou for your support in this matter.

Student absences

Did you know that EVERY DAY COUNTS? I cannot stress the importance of your child attending school every day as a day off is a day lost of learning.

  • Every day counts… because children achieve better when they attend school all day, every day
  • Every day counts… because going to school means getting a better chance at life
  • Every day counts… because school helps children build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience
  • Every day counts… because going to school is a legal requirement

What the law says

  • Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled and attends school on ALL school days unless you have a reasonable excuse.
  • You must not keep your child away from school for minor reasons.
  • Under the law, schools must monitor attendance of students and follow up with parents and caregivers any unexplained absences.

If your child is going to be away please ensure that you let the office know otherwise the absences is recorded as unexplained

Have you registered for QParents yet? Edens Landing State School provides our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Academic report cards
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details
  • Upcoming events list showing school events, exam and assessment dates, and excursions.

Invitations to register have been sent home to parent’s via email, if you have not received your invitation email for QParents please advise the office so that we can send out an invitation via the email address that you have provided to the school.

Register via the unique code link in your invitation and add your student by entering their EQID number – this can be found on any school invoice issued to you or your child’s previous report cards. If you have trouble locating your child’s EQID number please email office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au.

If you have an existing QParents account, simply select add another student and enter your student’s EQID number.

Thank you to those families who have already registered and discovering the many benefits of QParents. I hope to see many more families registering, I know you will enjoy the functionality of the QParents app.

Have a wonderful week

Warmly
Gail Quigley

Deputy Principal’s News

The term is passing us by so quickly. Thank you to the parents who are making sure their children are at school every day. This is a very busy time of year as teachers undertake final pieces of assessment leading up to reporting, so is very important for students to be at school.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

As a result of our outstanding performance in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, Edens Landing State School was invited to join the team at the Department of Education Reading Centre to celebrate the 2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. A small group of year 5 students joined Mrs. Quigley and myself to meet Lance Balchin, author and illustrator of ‘Mechanica’ and ‘Aquatica’. These students participated in a workshop with Lance Balchin creating their own ‘characters.’

This invitation acknowledges the huge effort of all students who completed the challenge to ensure we once again achieved 100% completion of the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS - 7 DECEMBER 2018

Please mark the date on your calendar to ensure everyone is able to attend out annual Christmas Carols on the Oval. Once again, we will have food and drinks for sale and a wonderful evening of songs and family fun.

FAMILY FUN DAY – 14 DECEMBER 2018

This term we will, once again, host our Family Fun Day on the last day of school. Please mark this day in your calendar as it is an amazing day for the whole family. Due to popular demand, we will endeavour once again to have a water slide to keep everyone cool on what is expected to be a warm day. All family members are invited to join us, bring a picnic to share with your child/ren and enjoy the day.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2018

Notes have gone home informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 10th December. This year we will once again be holding the event at the school to reduce the cost to parents and to offer graduating students a dance after the ceremony. Please make sure you have paid to make sure all year 6 students are able to attend. If you are finding payment difficult, please speak to the office before the cut-off date for payment.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 12th of December. This year we will be heading to Movie World. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students. Please fill out the permission forms, which have been sent home and utilise the payment options indicated to ensure your child’s place on the day. If you do not have the note, please contact the office to get a copy.

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

Orders are now being finalised for the 2019 Senior Shirts. The supplier has indicated that shirts should be available for the first day back next year.

UNIFORM

As the year moves closer to the end, we are seeing an increasing number of students wearing non-uniform items to school with their uniform. Large bows, ribbons and hair clips, jewellery (other than sleepers/studs, watch or religious or cultural relic), board shorts, undershirts which can be seen, extra-long socks which come above mid-shin, and non-uniform shorts are not permitted. Please ensure that your child wears school uniform every day. This shows pride in their school and respect for the rules.

Yours in Education

Deputy Principal’s News

Crime solving Preps.

To excite and encourage our budding letter writers, the teachers staged an alien invasion in the classrooms. The police were called and the students enthusiastically went around looking for clues on who created the chaos in their classrooms. The results prove it was worth it!

Reading aloud matters

Reading aloud is one of the most important things parents and teachers can do with children. Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about.

Children learn to love the sound of language before they even notice the existence of printed words on a page. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. When the rhythm and melody of language become a part of a child's life, learning to read will be as natural as learning to walk and talk.

Even after children learn to read by themselves, it's still important for you to read aloud together. By reading stories that are on their interest level, but beyond their reading level, you can stretch young readers' understanding and motivate them to improve their skills.

For ideas on reading aloud with your child please go to

Writing Narratives

The year 2 students have been busy with intensive reading and writing activities this term based on Narrative. One of the skills they have been practicing is using noun groups – or descriptions. Some students have worked really hard to improve on their work, such as the following story about Seth, the Deadly Wolf.

Don’t throw away your bottle tops!

Year 3 Excursion –Daisy Hill Koala Sanctuary

The Year 3s had a wonderful excursion on Tuesday visiting the Daisy Hill Conservation Park and Koala Centre. The excursion was part of our students’ Geography exploration of local places of significance. The students learnt a lot about the importance of the Koala Centre in educating the public about the dangers to koalas and the various uses of the park as an important recreation hub as well as being a significant habitat for native animals.

Summer Hiking Club

Every year we run a summer hiking club for students and families, usually along the beach, to provide some fitness, fun and social opportunities, finishing off with a sausage sizzle each time. Hikes are scheduled about a fortnight apart, depending on the weather. Staff members attend every hike. This Saturday 17 November the hike will be at Main Beach Gold Coast.

Family members are welcome to join in our hikes. If you cannot provide transport for your child, every effort will be made to offer alternative transport, however this will be dependent on volunteer drivers. There is no cost for the hikes; however we ask if possible that your child contributes to the sausage sizzle by providing either bread, sausages or sauces, They will be notified closer to the day of the hike as to what we need.

If you want your child to participate, please sign the form below and indicate if would like to participate and can offer transport to other students. Your registration, insurance and license must be current.

When: Saturday 17 November

Where: Main Beach Gold Coast

What to bring: Small back pack or their school bag, Water, Sunscreen, good walking shoes (joggers), light food ( fruit, sandwich, muesli bars, nuts). We encourage you to pack light, as the students will need to carry their own food and water.

Cost: Nil, if possible provide some supplies for the sausage sizzle.

We will meet parents at the front of Edens Landing State School at 7.00am promptly on Saturday morning so we can travel as a convoy and not be waiting for anyone.

In order to provide the opportunity for all students who wish to participate, it is necessary that we have enough transport for the hikes to ensure that we don’t have to exclude any students. If you are able to volunteer your time and provide transport please tick the permission form attached below and students attending need to complete a medical details form.

Tuckshop News

We are getting very close to the end of the year; how did that happen?!

As we edge closer to the end of the term, I will be running down tuckshop stock for the holidays. The last 2 weeks of the term there will be very limited stock of most of the menu and all efforts will be made to supply the children with what they order but please be aware that some items may not be available. I will post on our P&C Facebook page during those last two weeks updating stock supplies and flexischools will reflect what is available.

Margarita Pizza is already out of stock and will not return to the menu next year due to its unpopularity and low sales. Small poppers are also no longer available and will not return to the menu next year due to a supplier change.

Please take a moment to read about our ordering process. We have an online ordering system called Flexischools. THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Ordering on flexischools has a cut off time of 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are IN and CONFIRMED by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool system.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, please call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled so you can be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will still be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the website below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left-hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.

Any problems or concerns please do not hesitate in contacting me
