Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

I cannot believe how quickly this term is passing by …. We are nearly at the halfway mark already. Our students have been engaging in some exciting learning adventures including a Year 3’s trip to the Daisy Hill Koala Santuary, Year 4’s went to Browns Plains Landfill and learnt about the importance of recycling. There is still a lot more to look forward to including Year 6’s going to Movieworld for their Big Day Out, Year 1 and 2’s will be going to swimming lessons for 2 weeks and Surf Life Saving will be coming to the school to talk to Prep- Year 2’s.

ELSS ‘Say No to Bullying’ initiatives

At ELSS we tackle bullying issues using the latest research on what works best. We use a multi strategy approach and are constantly adding to our suite of tools.

This week we added another program to build students resilience and ability to tackle bullying head on. Our Rock and Water program launched this week with our Year 4 girls. This program is being delivered by our accredited Rock and Water PBL teacher aide, Mrs Ashlee Wheeler.

The Rock & Water program is an experience that provides young people a pathway to self-awareness, and increased self-confidence and social functioning.

Each participant of the Rock & Water program undergoes a journey of self-awareness as they learn about responding to life with either a "rock" or a "water" attitude. The use of symbolism is central to the success of the Rock & Water program and the reason why young people are drawn to the program.

The program is an excellent tool to support young people in finding their grounding, learning how to centre oneself and learning how to self manage in social settings. Topics covered in the program include: intuition, body language, mental strength, empathic feeling, positive feeling, positive thinking and positive visualizing. Discussion topics include bullying, sexual harassment, life goals, desires and following an inner compass.

I encourage all parents of Year 4 girls to complete the permission form and return ASAP to ensure they are part of this proactive program.

This program will be rolled out across the appropriate year levels throughout 2019.

For further information on this program please go to the website below.

https://www.rockandwaterprogram.com.au/

ELSS has registered to be part of the Project Rockit Digital Ambassadors project. The project has teamed up with Facebook and Instagram to build the next generation of Digital Ambassadors across Australia.

Digital Ambassadors mission is to promote the use of on-line power for good and to utilise positive strategies to safely connect and tackle on-line hate.

Project Rockit will be visiting over 40 communities across Australia in 2019 to seed the first generation of Digital Ambassadors and we need your support to bring them to ELSS.

We need you to nominate ELSS…the more nominations we get the more chance we have of being involved in this amazing opportunity.

Please go to the website below to register our school. The website also has detailed information about the project.

Let’s put ELSS in the spotlight for making a difference to on-line bullying.

No Hat No Play

A reminder that all students must wear a sun-safe hat to be able to play at break times. This initiative has been very successful in encouraging students to bring their hats to school. Thankyou to all the parents for their support in keeping our kids sun safe.

Enrolments for 2019

Please ensure that you have completed your enrolment forms and handed them into the office if you intend your child to attend ELSS in 2019. The more accurate we have our student numbers to more consistent our staffing will be for 2019.

Our Prep places are filling fast so don’t delay.

Have a wonderful week and thankyou for taking the time to read our Newsletter.

Deputy Principal’s News

Last Friday was World Teachers’ Day. Our teachers were showered with gifts and messages of gratitude for the amazing job they do every day. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to make our teachers feel so appreciated. A special thank you to the families who delivered treats to the office for the teachers to share for morning tea. They certainly enjoyed every morsel.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2018

At the end of this Term, our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Notes will be going home in the next week informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 10th December. This year we will once again be holding the event at the school to reduce the cost to parents and to offer graduating students a dance after the ceremony.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 12th of December. This year we will be heading to Movie World. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students. Please fill out the permission forms which have been sent home and utilise the payment options indicated to ensure your child’s place on the day. If you do not have the note, please contact the office to get a copy.

We have had a small number of parents asking about transporting their children on the day. We ask that any parent who is able to transport extra students on the day, please contact your child’s teacher so we can help facilitate every child attending.

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

Notes have gone home offering Year 5 students the opportunity to purchase a seniors’ shirt, so they are ready for them to wear from day one of Year 6, 2019.

Sizes of the shirts are similar to the current (new stock) uniform sizes. If your child is wearing a uniform from a previous batch, the sizes may vary. A sample of each size is available for fitting purposes from the office. The cost for each shirt is $36. Please allow a little extra room for growth throughout next year, as we cannot exchange sizes once ordered from the supplier.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2019.

If you are unsure of the correct size, send the payment and order form to the office and your child can try on the shirts and select the appropriate size on the order form. There will be no extension to the payment deadline, all payments and forms to be returned to the office by Friday 9th November 2018.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Thank you to the families who dressed in red for Day for Daniel last Friday. It was lovely to see so many students supporting this very valuable cause. Teachers have access to resources developed around Day for Daniel to help support students to keep themselves safe. We raised $373.75 for the Daniel Morecombe Foundation.

KITCHEN GARDEN NEWS

This week Edens Landing State School hosted a dinner for Rotary members to celebrate the development of our orchard. They were all very impressed with how our school runs this amazing program. If you have not been to see our garden recently, please pop in and take a look and a chat with Chef Chris. We are always looking for volunteers to help in the kitchen and garden so if you have a little or a lot of time on your hands please let Chris know.

Chef Chris asked me to mention that we have had several cases of theft from the garden. Some of our mature lettuce plants, ready to fruit tomato plants, beetroot, rockmelons and bok choy have been taken. All produce grown in the garden is planned and planted to provide students with the items they need to cook at specific times through the term. All cooking is directly linked to curriculum requirements. When items are taken, we no longer have the quantities we need for a whole year level of students to use. We ask all families to help guard our garden and let us know if you see anyone helping themselves.

Prep Enrolments

I have the privilege of meeting each of our new Prep students for next year. I have met some who are shy and need lots of encouragement and others who have no hesitation to talk to me about all their pets, their favourite foods and things they like to do. So far I have not come across any child who is like another – they are all unique individuals. I know that with the care and encouragement from our teachers and staff they will blossom.

If you know of any children in our area who turns 5 before June 30th 2019 please make sure they have contacted the office to arrange an interview.

Listening to children

In the rush of daily life, it can be easy to focus on your tasks, but it’s important we also make time to pause and listen to our children. Talking and really listening to your child holds a lot of importance. It is a two way experience with benefits for not only your child but for you as well.

Listening involves paying full attention to what your child has to say. Sometimes you may have to explain to your child that they need to wait before you can give them attention.

When you do have a moment, try these tips for listening:

  • Let your child know they have your undivided attention.
  • Focus on your child, don’t jump in to fix things, just listen.
  • Use language your child will understand.
  • Place yourself in your child’s shoes, imagine how you would have reacted in a given situation that your child is in.
  • Show curiosity and have an open mind.
  • Show attentiveness and be receptive by nodding and using positive facial expressions to reassure them.
  • Show you are interested and understand.
  • Be patient – don’t hurry your response.
  • Schedule time together where you can be in the moment physically and mentally.

Take the time today to listen to your child. Who knows what we will learn.

Prep Letters

As part of the current English unit, the prep students have been writing letters. I received some letters about my house, I hope you enjoy some of these as much as I did.

Tuckshop News

This term we have introduced some exciting new products to try. Along with our original flavours of Strawberry and Mango frozen yoghurts we now have a new flavour, Raspberry!

We also have Messy Monkeys, they come in Cheese, Burger and Pizza flavours, priced at $1.20 per packet.

Two new hot foods have joined our menu for this term. Twista Pasta Bolognese and Macaroni Cheese Pasta both selling for $3.70.

For a limited time only, we are selling Weis Frozen Fruit and Milk Bars. Two delicious flavours, Strawberry and Mango Passionfruit for $2.00 each.

All these new items are available on Flexischools. You can also make note of these additional items on your menus at home.

Please take a moment to read about our ordering process. We have an online ordering system called Flexischools. THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Ordering on flexischools has a cut off time of 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are IN and CONFIRMED by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, please call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled so you can be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will still be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the website below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.
