Newsletter Articles

Principal’s News

We have had a very positive start to our final term with students coming back vey settled and ready to learn.

Enrolments

We have now hit the 800 mark for student enrolments with more enrolments coming in each day. This is the most enrolments we have had in Edens Landing history.

We currently have 95 Prep students on our books for 2019. This is far more than we had at this time last year.

Pupil Free Day

A reminder that Monday 22 October is a pupil free day. We will be using this day to do our planning for 2019.

Staffing 2019

Transfers have almost finalised. This year we only received one transfer out which is wonderful news for us as it means that our staffing will remain stable. I will be able to share the finalised transfer report at next month’s P&C meeting.

Professional Learning

The leadership team has been involved in a two day workshop around High Performance Teams. This is to support the work we have been doing with Dr Pete Stebbins in ensuring our leadership team is implementing strategies that high performing teams use.

Next week Mrs Gibson, Ms Ambrose, Ms Wheeler and myself will be attending the final two days in the Berry Street Model training. This training is delivered by Berry Street, a school in Victoria who have had great success in supporting students who have suffered from trauma and neglect. We are working towards being a trauma informed school.

STEMit expo

Our STEMit Expo, held on the last day of Term 3 was an amazing success. The students and community’s feedback was very positive. I would like to thank the staff as many hours of planning and preparation went into the event.

Art Expo

Due to many competing priorities, we have decided to hold our Art Expo in Term 1 of next year. We hope to use the same organisation as our STEMit Expo in which the whole school participates in The Arts activities and families are invited to participate.

Gala Sports Days

Our Gala sports day have started well with students competing earnestly. We have also ensured that students can be involved in their passions, other than sport, with our Jam Program and STEM program being offered on the Fridays for those not attending sports. This has proved to be positive initiative.

Important information about the new book list process for 2019

In 2019 Edens Landing State School will be implementing a Student Resource Scheme (SRS). The SRS was endorsed at the P&C Meeting on Monday night. The SRS will replace our usual process of book lists and the ordering of stationery supplies for students. The purpose of implementing a SRS is to provide quality stationery items for all participating students and increasing the school’s capacity to provide resourcing for student learning. Full information about the SRS will be uploaded to the school website on Thursday this week.

Participation in the SRS is voluntary and the scheme is in line with Department of Education policy. This week a Participation Agreement and information will be provided to each family via the youngest student in the family. Invoices for payment will be generated on Monday 5 November where the Participation Agreement has been returned to the office.

Please note that the Participation Agreement must be returned even where families decide not to participate, with the No box ticked. Parents who decide not to participate should contact the school office to make an appointment with the Business Manager to obtain a book list and discuss non-participation.

The school is in the process of opening a Centrepay account. This will enable families who receive Centrelink assistance to pay the SRS fees directly to the school as a payment plan. Payment forms will be available from the office.

A Parent Information Session about the SRS will be held in the near future at a date and time to be confirmed.

I look forward to an exciting and busy Term 4.

Warmly
Gail Quigley
Principal

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to another busy term at Edens Landing State School. The much-needed rain has resulted in a few wet weather lunches, which most students enjoy. Thank you to all of the parents who made sure their children returned in full school uniform and equipped with all of the equipment they need to participate in learning.

GRADUATION FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS 2018

At the end of this Term, our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Notes will be going home in the next 2 weeks informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 10th December. This year we will once again be holding the event at the school to reduce the cost to parents and to offer graduating students a dance after the ceremony.

YEAR 6 BIG DAY OUT

As is our Tradition, our Year 6 students will be having their “Big Day Out” on Wednesday the 12th of December. This year we will be heading to Movie World. This is an exciting day and one that will create many memories for our senior students. Please fill out the permission forms which have been sent home and utilise the payment options indicated to ensure your child’s place on the day. If you do not have the note, please contact the office to get a copy.

We have had a small number of parents asking about transporting their children on the day. We ask that any parent who is able to transport extra students on the day, please contact your child’s teacher so we can help facilitate every child attending.

YEAR 5 NEWS

The selection process surrounding nominations for leadership roles in Year 6 2019 has been explained to students and nomination forms have been distributed to students who indicated their interest. Students are to return all completed nomination forms to the office no later than Week 3, Term 4 (Tuesday 23/10).

YEAR FIVE SENIOR SHIRTS

Notes have gone home offering Year 5 students the opportunity to purchase a seniors’ shirt, so they are ready for them to wear from day one of Year 6, 2019.

Sizes of the shirts are similar to the current (new stock) uniform sizes. If your child is wearing a uniform from a previous batch, the sizes may vary. A sample of each size is available for fitting purposes from the office. The cost for each shirt is $36. Please allow a little extra room for growth throughout next year as we cannot exchange sizes once ordered from the supplier.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2019.

If you are unsure of the correct size, send the payment and order form to the office and your child can try on the shirts and select the appropriate size on the order form. There will be no extension to the payment deadline, all payments and forms to be returned to the office by Friday 9th November 2018.

RULE OF THE WEEK

This term we are teaching students the NED Strategy. This series of lessons focuses on:

  • Never Give Up – Focus and Persistence
  • Encourage Others – Kindness and Shared Learning
  • Do Your Best – Diligence and Excellence

Students will be watching videos about how the brain works in order to develop an understanding of the brain and that, by being challenged; their brain can get stronger and smarter. Classes will discuss how this relates to never giving up, encouraging others and doing our best. If you would like to know more about this strategy, you can access resources and information online at the NED website. Additionally here are some links to websites which you may find helpful.

Developing fine motor skills for writing

Does your child avoid writing, drawing or colouring? Perhaps they find it physically difficult to hold a pencil, pen or brush needed for these activities.

Throughout their school life students will need to demonstrate their understanding through writing and drawing. To be able to do this they need to develop their fine motor skills.

Fine motor skills refer to the movement and control of small muscles groups, including hands, wrists, fingers, feet and toes.

Movement and physical play from birth is important for the development of fine motor skills, as these build the foundations for everyday activities later in life; like buttoning a shirt, tying shoelaces, playing a musical instrument, typing, writing and more.

Tactile play with materials like playdough or slime is a great way for children to experiment and build fine motor skills through play, through moulding and manipulating the different textures and materials.

For more fantastic fun ideas to help develop fine motor skills follow these links.

The prep students have certainly come a long way this year. Last term they were making up their own rhyming books – including illustrations

Video games and the effects on students

Each year there is a new game or fad that children (and adults) become interested in, a few years ago we were hunting for Pokemon, and the latest game that has come to my attention is Fortnite.

There are some very interesting articles regarding the game and to whether it has a negative effect on students.

I would highly recommend that before allowing your child to play M rated games, that parents explore the scenarios and language used in the games with the understanding that children often play the game in the playground. What I have heard from students concerns me with what concepts they are being exposed to at such a young age.

Please consider exploring and monitoring the online games your child plays.

Tuckshop News

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems. Talk to your children about finishing these items during the first break and not leaving them to consume for second break.

Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled, and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the website below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left-hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.

Online ordering system is called Flexischools.
