Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

Well the end of term is nearly upon us with only one week to go for our September vacation. I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. I would also like to thank the overwhelming number of parents to show their support to our wonderful school in so many ways.

Before School arrival

I know this has been an issue in the media over the past week with a school mandating when their students can arrive at the school.

I feel it is timely to remind parents that the preferred time for student arrival is 8.30am. This is when the students are supervised from. As I am sure you can understand, having many children here well before 8am creates its own problems. I do understand that many parents need to leave for work early and we are very fortunate that we have a OSHC program here on our school site that opens at 6am. I therefore request that your child is dropped off no earlier than 8.30am and if they need to then they need to be dropped off at OSHC.

If you have any issues around this request, please do not hesitate to contact me on 3826 0333.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Talk, Walk Report

At ELSS we take the issue of bullying very seriously. Bullying is a very complex problem with many layers. The dealing with the problem cannot be just a single strategy but rather a range of strategies.

One way we are dealing with bullying is to educate children on how to deal with conflict or bullies. We have adopted our ‘Talk, Walk, Report’ response which empowers students to firstly Talk to the person who they are in conflict with, Walk away and if this doesn’t work, then Report to an adult here at school.

So, you can reinforce these valuable lessons with your child we will soon post our Powerpoint Presentations on our Website.

In my next newsletter, I will explain how we are drawing on the cutting-edge practice being utilised by our criminal justice system, the practice of Restorative Practices, as another tool to deal with this complex issue.

Should you wish to speak to me personally regarding our approaches please do not hesitate to contact me.

Facebook

Have you liked our Facebook page? This is one of the main ways we communicate with our parents/community.

Having discussed the issue of bullying, I feel it is important to stress that our Facebook page is to be utilised for information sharing ONLY. It is disappointing to see that some parents are using it as a forum to voice their concerns, sometimes distorting the truth of what has actually happened. This, to me, is a form of bullying as it takes away the right of the person/persons being accused as it does not afford them ‘natural justice’ and a right of appeal. We are constantly trying to prevent ‘cyber bullying’ with our young people but to do this we need to be practicing what we preach.

We welcome feedback at ELSS and there are many face to face forums available to do this, namely the Captains tables and direct meetings.

To those parents who utilise these forums I sincerely thankyou and look forward to our continued productive partnerships.

Warmly

Gail Quigley

“FIVER FROM A FAMILY FOR THE FARMERS ON FRIDAY”

Once again the amazing families of Edens Landing State School have come together to show the world what our community is made of. Our Student Council fundraiser to support out struggling farmers raised $1 425.00. Thank you very much. The support our families give to our school makes the staff and students feel very lucky indeed.

YEAR 6 NEWS

The Students and staff of year 6 are already getting organised for the big events happening next term. The Big Day Out notes have been sent home and Graduation preparation is well underway. The year book is almost ready to send to print. Please make sure you have given your child media clearance so they can be included in the year book and graduation presentations.

This year Graduation will be held on Monday 10th December in the school hall. This is the second year we will use our own hall and the students last year loved it as they were able to have a disco after the ceremony. Please mark this date on your calendars.

YEAR 5 NEWS

The selection process surrounding nominations for leadership roles in Year 6 2019 have been explained to students and nomination forms have been distributed to students who indicated their interest. All nomination forms must be returned to the office no later than Week 3, Term 4 (Tuesday 23/10).

NEW DATE FOR STEM IT!

Our STEM IT! Day was rained out so has been moved to the last Friday of term 21st September. Families are invited to join in the fun with their children. Activities will be set up around the school and students and their families will be able to participate in the activities.

As part of this event, families are invited to create a rubber band car to enter our competition. Your challenge is to design and create a car that can be propelled by rubber bands. It needs to be made using recycled materials, for example: plastic bottle caps, old CDs, straws, skewers, metal or cardboard. The car that travels the further will be the winner!

Here are some helpful websites for ideas:

  • PBS Kids – Rubber band car

http://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/rubber-band-car/

  • Your Modern Dad – DIY Rubber Band Racer

https://yourmoderndad.com/diy-rubber-band-racer/

  • DIY.org – Rubber Band-Powered Car

https://diy.org/rabinovitch/63115

All entries are due no later than Wednesday 12th September. Your creation must be handed into the Resource Centre with the competition entry form. All entries will be displayed in the Resource Centre for viewing during Week 8 of Term 3.

On the day of our STEM IT! Expo (Friday September 21) an announcement will be made for all participants to carry their cars to the racing track. They will be tested in front of the crowd to see which car travels the furthest and the winning entries will be announced on the day! Cars will be taken home at the end of the Expo.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Tuckshop News

TUCKSHOP CLOSED 21 September

Another term is coming to an end, where did that time go?!

With end of term fast approaching, stock is being run down for the holidays. Flexischools will reflect what is available and all efforts will be made to fill your children’s lunch during the last week of school.

Over the past few weeks children have been bringing large notes to pay for tuckshop. Please be mindful that the tuckshop only has a small float at the start of the day and the potential for money being lost or stolen when children have large amounts of money with them is great. I keep change safe in the tuckshop until I leave for the day if it is a large amount.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems. Talk to your children about finishing these items during the first break and not leaving them to consume for second break.

Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled, and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the website below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left-hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.

ORDERING PROCESS

Online ordering system is called Flexischools.
