Principal’s News

There are more than 4,000,000 great reasons why Queenslanders should take care on the road. You're one of them. Too many people die on Queensland roads, and the effects can be devastating. The financial costs are enormous, and the social and emotional impacts are even bigger. But the sad truth is, road crashes are largely preventable. Join the Drive to Save Lives is a road safety initiative with the goal to get the whole of Queensland to rally together behind road safety.

Edens Landing Police Beat in partnership with Edens Landing State School, Transport & Main Roads and Logan City Council conducted a “Walking School Bus”.

What is a Walking School Bus?

A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that’s part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school as a structured route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers. The flexibility of the walking school bus makes it appealing to communities of all sizes with varying needs. Parents often cite safety issues as one of the primary reasons they are reluctant to allow their children to walk to school. Providing adult supervision may help reduce those worries for families who live within walking or bicycling distance to school.

Edens Landing Police along with Teachers and other representatives escorted and supervised students along a designated route while wearing high visibility vests. The theme for the particular day is to Share the Road - Bikes/Pedestrians - Importance of sharing the road and the impacts upon us when we don’t display these behaviours.

Police will be discussing with students along the way the importance of Road Safety as a pedestrian or bike rider. Students participating in the “Walking School Bus” will also be given a Road Safety Week gift for their acknowledgement and support of road safety.

When giving way to Pedestrians on the crossing- Pedestrians MUST be off the crossing before motorists can drive through the crossing.

During Road Safety Week 2018 Edens Landing Police will be conducting numerous enforcement and community engagement activities subsequently joining the drive to save lives. It is requested that we remember to continue this drive and passion for road safety all year round which will ensure a safe and incident free year for all road users.

If you seek more information in relation to this matter, contact Edens Landing Police Beat via phone or email on 3382 9690 or EdensLanding.Beat@police.qld.gov.au.

Deputy Principal’s News

Congratulations to the staff and students for an amazing production of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. A big thank you also to the families who supported us with costumes and props. It is wonderful how our school community comes together to make things happen for our students and how they support us by attending. It is lovely for our students to have such an enthusiastic audience.

STEM IT!

On the 6th September, we will be running our first ever STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Day. Families are invited to join in the fun with their children. Activities will be set up around the school and students and their families will be able to participate in the activities.

As part of this event, families are invited to create a rubber band car to enter our competition. Your challenge is to design and create a car that can be propelled by rubber bands. It needs to be made using recycled materials, for example: plastic bottle caps, old CDs, straws, skewers, metal or cardboard. The car that travels the further will be the winner!

Here are some helpful websites for ideas:

  • PBS Kids – Rubber band car

http://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/rubber-band-car/

  • Your Modern Dad – DIY Rubber Band Racer

https://yourmoderndad.com/diy-rubber-band-racer/

  • DIY.org – Rubber Band-Powered Car

https://diy.org/rabinovitch/63115

All entries are due no later than Wednesday 5th September. Your creation must be handed into the Resource Centre with the competition entry form. All entries will be displayed in the Resource Centre for viewing during Week 8 of Term 3.

On the day of our STEM IT! Expo (Thursday September 6th) an announcement will be made for all participants to carry their cars to the racing track. They will be tested in front of the crowd to see which car travels the furthest and the winning entries will be announced on the day! Cars will be taken home at the end of the Expo.

If you have any of the following items and are happy to donate them for use on our STEM EXPO, please drop them at Mrs Gibson’s office. We would greatly appreciate your help with these items which will be used by students on the day.

Any donations of any of the following items would be greatly appreciated.

Match sticks, Paper cups, Plastic cups, Newspaper, A4 photocopy paper, Paper clips, PVA Glue, Masking Tape, Sticky Tape, Rubber bands, Paddle pop sticks, Mini marshmallows, Split pins, Pom poms (mini), Blu-tack, Glitter, Confetti, Playing cards, Cellophane, Jam jars/glass jars, Clear contact.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2018 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 19th September 2018, from 3:20pm-6:00pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child will be required to attend this meeting so they can discuss how they are going with their learning.

Bookings for interviews will open on the 20th of August and close on the 14th of September. Go to the link below - (Link is available through the school newsletter and school’s web page)

Rule of the Week

Edens Landing is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. The current focus has been teaching students about TALK, WALK, REPORT At Edens Landing State School!

Sometimes we have conflict with others. Conflict is when two or more people have a disagreement or argument

To resolve conflict we can… TALK, WALK, REPORT.

Talk

  • Talk to the person about what has upset or hurt you
  • Use “I statements”
  • I feel…when you...because...
  • Next time can you please...
e.g. “I felt sad when you didn’t sit with me because I wanted to sit with you. Next break can I please sit with you?”
“I felt angry when you didn’t let me play because I really wanted to. Next time can I please play?”

Walk

  • If you have done the talk and it doesn’t seem to help, walk away
  • Sometimes we need to walk away to help us calm down because we might be really angry or really sad

Report

Report (Prep – Year 1):

If the conflict keeps going, report it to a teacher.

  • When you tell the teacher, say:
    -Where it happened
    -When it happened
    -What happened

e.g. “At lunch time on the oval Jesse kept taking my hat and wouldn’t give it back.”

  • In the classroom – tell the teacher
  • In the playground – tell the teacher on duty who is wearing a yellow vest
  • The teachers will ask you if you have talked and walked!

Report (Year 2 – 6)

If the conflict isn’t resolved, report it to a teacher.

  • When you tell the teacher, just include the facts!
    -Where it happened
    -When it happened
    -What happened
e.g. “When I was on the oval at lunch time, Jesse took my hat and ran off with it. I told him that I didn’t like it because I needed my hat on to be safe and asked him not to do it next time, but he did it again.”
“I was playing soccer on the oval at second break and Jasmine came from another game and kicked our ball. I told her that it makes us angry and asked her not to do it again but she kept doing it.”
  • If the conflict is in the classroom, tell your teacher.
  • If the conflict is in the playground, tell the teacher on duty. Teachers wear a yellow vest.
  • The teachers will ask you if you have talked and walked!

Early years Count - Using maths in everyday situations

Counting, measuring and sorting are important mathematical skills that are used in day to day life. There are many ways you can help your child find practical uses for maths each day. By counting steps, measuring ingredients for cooking or sorting things into colours, shapes and sizes, children are developing a foundational understanding of key mathematical concepts.

Games and stories that use counting, size or measurement are also a great way to use maths each day. Why not try water games to learn about volume and measurement?

By showing your own interest in maths and helping your child use their skills in everyday activities, you can help them develop an understanding and interest in maths at an early age.

PE News

Interschool School Sport

Interschool Sport training will commence next week.

Touch Football- Tuesday and Friday mornings 8am
Softball- Monday and Thursday mornings 8am

Junior Sports Day

This day will be held on Thursday 30th August. This day involves students from Prep-2 participating in a range of tabloid activities and running races. Family and friends are encouraged to come along and support their child/ren. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, house colours, sunscreen, a hat and bring plenty of water.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. In saying this, there are a number of students who are failing to bring a hat to lessons. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

P & C News

Pie Drive orders are due 31 August.

Tuckshop News

To celebrate the upcoming STEM day on Thursday 6 September the tuckshop will be holding a Subway lunch. Normal tuckshop for first break will not be available on this day. Second break will operate normally.

Subway forms and more information will be sent home soon, information will also be posted on our P&C Facebook page.

Please ensure you are using the green menu for 2018, if you do not have one please ask your child to come and see me and I will give them one.

Money and food sharing is not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems. Talk to your children about finishing these items during the first break and not leaving them to consume for second break.

ORDERING PROCESS

We have an online ordering system called Flexischools.

http://www.flexischools.com.au.

THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled, and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.
