Principal’s News

QParents is coming!

Great news! Edens Landing State School will soon be providing our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.

The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with their child’s school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Academic report cards
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details
  • Upcoming events list showing school events, exam and assessment dates, and excursions.

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.

We will be sending out invitations via the email address that you have provided to the school for parents to register for QParents on Tuesday 14 August. If you do not receive an email, please contact the office via email office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au with the subject line QParents so that we can get the correct email into the system as soon as possible.

To register you will need your child’s EQ ID number – you can find this on your child’s report card or a previously issued invoice in your child’s name. If you do not want to register, you may advise us not to send you any more invitations, and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents.

QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

Deputy Principal’s News

What an exciting start to Term 3. Our students are working hard on the curriculum which has been carefully designed by their teachers. As always, teachers greatly appreciate offers of help from parents and guardians. If you have some time to offer, please contact your child’s class teacher or the office as we are always looking for willing helpers in the classrooms, garden, kitchen and other projects which pop up from time to time.

MUSICAL

You are invited to attend our 2018 Musical “Robyn and the Sherwood Hoodies.” Students have been working hard to learn their lines and remember their roles. Our musicals are always lots of fun and a great night out for the whole family.

Dates: Thursday August 23 and Friday August 24, 2018
Where: Windaroo Valley High School Performing Arts Block
Times: Doors open 6:30pm for 7pm start
Cost: ADULTS - $10, STUDENT/CHILD - $8 or FAMILY - $30 (2 adults and 2 children/students)

Tickets are available through the order form which went home on Wednesday this week.

Student council will be hosting a stall with coffee and cakes available for purchase on the night. All proceeds go towards supporting our Kitchen/Garden Program.

If you are able to help with costume or scenery, please contact the office and let them know. We are always looking for people handing with a sewing machine or hammer and paint.

STEM IT!

On the 6th September, we will be running our first ever STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Day. Families are invited to join in the fun with their children. Activities will be set up around the school and students and their families will be able to participate in the activities.

As part of this event, families are invited to create a rubber band car to enter our competition. Your challenge is to design and create a car that can be propelled by rubber bands. It needs to be made using recycled materials, for example: plastic bottle caps, old CDs, straws, skewers, metal or cardboard. The car that travels the further will be the winner!

Here are some helpful websites for ideas:

  • PBS Kids – Rubber band car

http://pbskids.org/designsquad/build/rubber-band-car/

  • Your Modern Dad – DIY Rubber Band Racer

https://yourmoderndad.com/diy-rubber-band-racer/

  • DIY.org – Rubber Band-Powered Car

https://diy.org/rabinovitch/63115

All entries are due no later than Wednesday 5th September. Your creation must be handed into the Resource Centre with the competition entry form. All entries will be displayed in the Resource Centre for viewing during Week 8 of Term 3.

On the day of our STEM IT! Expo (Thursday September 6th) an announcement will be made for all participants to carry their cars to the racing track. They will be tested in front of the crowd to see which car travels the furthest and the winning entries will be announced on the day! Cars will be taken home at the end of the Expo.

If you have any of the following items and are happy to donate them for use on our STEM EXPO, please drop them at Mrs Gibson’s office. We would greatly appreciate your help with these items which will be used by students on the day.

Any donations of any of the following items would be greatly appreciated.

Match sticks, Cardboard (old cereal boxes, food packaging, sheets of cardboard A4, old folders, any cardboard boxes), Paper cups, Plastic cups, Newspaper, A4 photocopy paper, Paper clips, PVA Glue, Masking Tape, Sticky Tape, Rubber bands, Paddle pop sticks, Mini marshmallows, Split pins, Pom poms (mini), Blu-tack, Glitter, Confetti, Playing cards, Cellophane, Jam jars/glass jars, Clear contact.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2018 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 19th September 2018, from 3:20pm-6:00pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child will be required to attend this meeting so they can discuss how they are going with their learning.

Bookings for interviews will open on the 20th of August and close on the 14th of September. Go to - http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au (Link is available through the school newsletter and school’s web page)

Enter the following code to access bookings and press go: f72d8

Indigenous Culture Club

Indigenous homework club will once again run every Monday afternoon 3:00-4:00pm each term. This program is run by a group of dedicated teachers and is led by Mrs Harding and Ms Stevenson. This is a great opportunity for our Indigenous students to get support with their learning as well as participate in cultural activities to promote an understanding of their culture. I encourage all Indigenous students to attend as often as possible. Parents who wish to contribute to our culture club are also very welcome. More information will be coming home soon and all paperwork must be completed before students can attend.

Rule of the Week

Edens Landing is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. The current focus has been insisting students wear hats every day. We do this to ensure our students are safe from having their skin damaged to protect them from skin cancer later in life. Students who don’t have hats are required to sit in either the old hall or JCA. Thank you to the many families who ensure their children come to school with a hat every day.

Deputy Principal’s News

We have had a wonderful start to the term. The children are very excited about the units of work this term. For example the year 2 classes are studying the life cycle of different animals and are observing the life cycle of an insect by looking after rhino beetles. Each of the classes have Rhinoceros beetle larvae in their rooms and are monitoring their growth and change.

International Study Tour

Recently we had a group of 10 Taiwanese students from Kinmen County visit our school, while being hosted by our amazing families. The students were able to experience some of the fantastic programs we offer here at Edens Landing by joining in some classes for learning, including Robotics, gardening, cooking, dancing, computer lessons and PE. The children had a wonderful time and we hope they will visit again in the future. Thank you to all our host families that made it possible.

Book week

We ae celebrating book week August 20th – 24th, starting with our fantastic costume parade. Parents are invited to come in and join the fun on the junior oval at 9 -11am, then stay on to read to children in their classrooms.

We are also doing a Book Swap. This was very successful when we did one last year – and the children have been keen to do another one. Please look through your children’s libraries for any books they may have grown out of and send them along to the office. On the Friday children can pay a gold coin donation to take a book home. All children are able to collect a book - ie you don’t have to donate in order to get a book, however the more books that are donated the better the choice children have.

Curriculum News

Taking Mathematics from the classroom to the kitchen.

This term year 2 students are learning about fractions. The kitchen is a great place to practice these skills as reading recipes and following the instructions relies on being able to understand not just how to measure out a quarter of a cup, or half a teaspoon, but also how to work out fractions of collections. Last week the year 2 students cooked banana and sultana pikelets. They had to make sure each pikelet had the same amount of sultanas. To do this they took 16 sultanas and split them into 2 groups, 4 groups and then 8 groups. Their teachers asked them questions such as “What is one half of 16?” and “What is a quarter of 16?”. A very big thank you to the parents who came along to our kitchen lessons and helped the students to cook the pikelets. They were delicious!

Junior Sports Day

This day will be held on Thursday 30th August. This day involves students from Prep-2 participating in a range of tabloid activities and running races. Family and friends are encouraged to come along and support their child/ren. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, house colours, sunscreen, a hat and bring plenty of water. A note with further information will be sent home shortly.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. In saying this, there are a number of students who are failing to bring a hat to lessons. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

TuckshopNews

TUCKSHOP NEWS

To celebrate the upcoming STEM day on Thursday 6 September the tuckshop will be holding a Subway lunch. Normal tuckshop for first break will not be available on this day. Second break will operate normally.

Subway forms and more information will be sent home soon, information will also be posted on our P&C Facebook page.

Please ensure you are using the green menu for 2018, if you do not have one please ask your child to come and see me and I will give them one.

Money and food sharing is not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems. Talk to your children about finishing these items during the first break and not leaving them to consume for second break.

ORDERING PROCESS

We have an online ordering system called Flexischools.

THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled, and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to Flexischools and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.
