Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

A big welcome to Term 3, the term where all the action happens. This term we have our Musical, Junior sports day, Book week, STEMit Expo, Bushdance, Family fun day and much much more. It will be a fun term that is for sure with loads of community involvement.

Staffing

This week we welcome back our much-loved Ms Cath Hill who has returned on a graduated entry after a prolonged illness. It is wonderful to have her back and I know she is so happy to be back. Mr Detering will be continuing to support in Year 6 for the next six weeks.

Mrs Eve Richardson, our amazing office assistant, is taking long service leave for Term 3. We welcome Mrs Alison Butler to our join wonderful office team.

No Hat No Play

ELSS is a sun safe school. It is alarming the number of students who are coming to school without a hat. For the next two weeks, we will be focusing on ‘Being Safe in the Sun”. This will mean that if a student does not have a sun-safe hat they will not be able to play and will be required to sit in the Hall and the Junior undercover area for break time.

Please support us with this very important issue. Hats are available for purchase at our uniform shop which opens every Thursday from 8.15am – 9.15am.

Captain’s Table

This term I will be starting up my very popular Captains tables…an informal small group forum in which I meet with parents to discuss ELSS..what they like and what we can improve. This will be conducted every Thursday @ 9am. I am starting with the Prep parents and will move through the school throughout the term.

Invitations will be sent out at random however if you are interested in attending, please contact the office on 3826 0333. Parents who have previously attended are more than welcome to come again.

Look forward to meeting with you in the future.

Warmly

Gail Quigley
Principal

Deputy Principal’s News

Welcome back to what is already shaping up to be a busy term. Lunch time activities are back into full swing already. One of the many activities offered to students during second play break is our craft club. This club provides opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities, from bubble blowing, play dough, painting and construction right through to learning how to sew using the schools set of sewing machines. If anyone you know has unwanted craft items at home please send them our way. We are always looking for anything which can be used. The items most needed are fabric, glue, scrap booking resources and items to glue to constructions (feathers, sequins, pompoms etc.) All unwanted craft items can be used and will be greatly appreciated. Please leave any items at the office.

BUSH DANCE

The bush dance is finally here. Thank you to all of the families who donated items for our stalls. It shows what amazing people we have supporting our school. Please bring the whole family along to enjoy the evening. Food will be available and heaps of music and fun to fill the night. We still require people to help on the night. Please contact your child’s teacher or the P&C if you have a few minutes to spare.

Student Council Jeans for Genes Day Friday 3rd August

On Friday 3rd August, students are asked to wear their jeans and bring a gold coin donation to support this great cause. Students may wear jeans of any colour with their uniform shirt and jumper. If students own a denim jacket or skirt, they may wear that in place of their school jacket or shorts/skorts. Students who do not wish to wear jeans are expected to be in full school uniform.

What is Jeans for Genes? Jeans for Genes is the iconic fundraising campaign of Children’s Medical Research Institute.

Jeans for Genes was established in 1994 by Children’s Medical Research Institute to fund revolutionary research that helps diagnose, understand, and find cures or treatments for conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, cancer, and epilepsy.

1 in 20 kids is born with a genetic disease or birth defect. You likely know and care about someone affected.

Genetic diseases are one of the leading causes of death in kids under four and the main cause of ongoing hospitalisation. To fight this epidemic, we need more research.

Every Minute Counts

As the cold weather sets in, we are seeing a growing number of students coming to school late.

As a school community, we place great importance on students being punctual to school and to lessons. Lack of punctuality affects learning and behaviour not only of the student who is late, but of other learners in the class due to the disruption caused as student enter after the lesson has started and as the teacher is required to recap on missed learning for those who arrive late. This reduces learning time for all students of the class.

At Edens Landing State School, our expectation is that students are at school waiting in the designated places no later than 8.40am, so they are ready to enter class and begin learning at 8:50am. Similarly, students are expected to return to class promptly after each break.

Every minute of learning is important. Please support us in ensuring your child arrives on time, in correct uniform and with all the equipment they require, ready to work hard every day.

Enjoy More Time to Prepare

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the lessons to come. They have all the time they need to literally and figuratively wake up. Showing up on time can enhance the often-jarring transitioning between sleepy drives to school to concentrating on the day’s first lessons. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus.

Never Miss Important Information

Arriving to school after classes have begun can cause students to miss more than just the introduction to a new lesson. Teachers often share important information: reminders of upcoming events, class trips, classroom rules, project due dates and other school-related specifics. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event. While a teacher will likely reiterate crucial information throughout the day, latecomers may miss out on courtesy reminders about homework assignments and other projects.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2018 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 19th September 2018, from 3:20pm-6:00pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child will be required to attend this meeting so they can discuss how they are going with their learning.

Bookings for interviews will open on the 20th of August and close on the 14th of September. Links will be provided closer to the date.

Indigenous Culture Club

Indigenous homework club will once again run every Monday afternoon 3:00-4:00pm each term. This program is run by a group of dedicated teachers and is led by Mrs Harding and Ms Stevenson. This is a great opportunity for our Indigenous students to get support with their learning as well as participate in cultural activities to promote an understanding of their culture. I encourage all Indigenous students to attend as often as possible. Parents who wish to contribute to our culture club are also very welcome. More information will be coming home soon and all paperwork must be completed before students can attend.

Rule of the Week

Edens Landing is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. The first 2 weeks of this term have been used to target students transitioning between activities and areas in the school and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of the rules each week.

Prep takes Mathematics from the classroom to the kitchen

Prep students kicked off an exciting term by using their knowledge of patterns to create fruit skewers in their week 1 kitchen lesson. Students learnt how to cut the fruit safely, pull apart mandarins and separate grapes from the stalk without squashing them. These actions may seem simple, however for little fingers they are a great fine motor activity and strengthen hand eye co-ordination. Once the students had prepared the fruit, they chose pieces to create their patterns.

Knowledge of picture patterns in the early years helps children to develop number sense and apply pattern concepts to number sequences like counting in 5s and working out by how much numbers are increasing or decreasing. Here are some of the fantastic AB patterns created by the students. AB patterns have 2 elements that repeat. Next time your child is helping you in the kitchen, see if they can create patterns with the ingredients and describe to you what type of patterns they have created.

Representative News

Congratulatirons to Ava who recently completed at the State Titles for basketball. Her team ‘Logan Thunder’ placed second. This is a great achievement! Well done Ava!

Junior Sports Day

This day will be held on Thursday 30th August. This day involves students from Prep-2 participating in a range of tabloid activities and running races. Family and friends are encouraged to come along and support their child/ren. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, house colours, sunscreen, a hat and bring plenty of water. A note with further information will be sent home shortly.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. In saying this, there are a number of students who are failing to bring a hat to lessons. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

After School Sport Program

Unfortunately our school was unsuccessful in the application for funding this term, therefore there will no After School Sport Program.

Interschool Sport

Interschool Sport nomination forms have been sent home to students in grades 5 and 6. Please ensure these are returned as soon as possible to ensure your child/ren are nominated to play. Further information regarding payment and training will be sent home once numbers are finalized.
