Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

Report Cards

With only two weeks left until the end of term, school life is becoming alot calmer, with all our assessments out of the way. Teachers are completing the Semester 1 report cards. The report cards will be handed out on Thursday 28 June. Please remember that a “C” grading is average, and that your child is achieving at a sound level. This is something to be celebrated.

Attendance

Just a reminder that it is compulsory for all students to attend every day unless they are sick or for other acceptable personal reasons. We are currently sending out letters to families where their child/ren have missed a significant amount of school. Research shows that every day counts and by missing days at school has a significant impact on their learning outcomes.

If you are experiencing difficulty bringing your child to school, please call us as we can organise support.

When your child goes to school every day they will achieve their best. Here are some tips for helping your child turn up, achieve more and maintain a good attendance habit:

Let your child know it is important to go to school every day

One of the best ways to encourage your child to go to school every day is to talk about school in a positive way. Tell your child it is important that they go to school, even on special days like their birthday or the last day of term. Occasionally, your child may need to stay home from school—they might be sick, or there might be serious family matters you have to attend to (such as a funeral). While these kinds of events are unavoidable, other events such as shopping trips, holidays, visiting family and friends, or appointments such as haircuts can be scheduled out of school hours.

Create routines for your child

Help your child get organised and prepare for their school day. Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. Encourage them to lay their school clothes out the night before and pack their bags in advance so they can get to school on time.

How can you help?

  • Talk positively about school with your child.
  • Create and maintain a routine.
  • If possible, make appointments out of school hours.
  • Avoid taking your child away for holidays during the school term.

Illness at school

Time Out – protect students from spreading infectious diseases.

When your child is ill, look after them at home to help reduce the spread of germs and prevent other children becoming ill. Keep surfaces, toys and equipment clean and encourage your child to wash their hands often, even when they feel well. If your child is suffering from a virus, gastroenteritis or another illness, there are rules about when they can return to school. Learn more about symptoms and exclusion rules in Queensland and take your child to the doctor if you are concerned.

Help reduce the spread of infection by keeping your child at home when they are ill. Keep surfaces clean and encourage children to wash their hands often, even when they feel well. Learn more below

School Disco

Our first P and C disco for 2018 will be held this Friday 15 June in our Multi Purpose Hall. This is for students of ELSS only. Siblings or students not enrolled at ELSS will be refused entry.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

My favourite part of my job is the time I spend with your beautiful children, both in class and outside of class. I love to visit classrooms to discover what new and exciting adventures their learning has taken them on. Last week I visited 4/5S to look at some of the amazing work they had been doing in History and Technology as they created dioramas and model space crafts. The students were able to explain their planning and construction methods and were able to explain what Australia was like before European settlement. The detail in some of the displays was fantastic, one student had even gone to the effort of putting rock art on the rocks in the background.

YEAR 5 CAMP

Our Year 5 students returned from camp looking very pleased with themselves for having completed their first school camp. The teachers looked just as happy to be returning to school after a long night with one student who had broken his arm. The young man is doing well and was very brave during his ordeal. Please take the time to thank the staff who leave their own families behind to make this experience possible for our students. They are an amazing group of very dedicated people.

BUSH DANCE 2018!

Please remember that Wednesday the 27th June is the date for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance, we have the Ran Tan Bush Band coming back to perform and there will be entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Entry will be a gold coin donation as was the case last year.

A huge THANK YOU to the very generous families who have already started to send in donations. Your support will ensure the night will be a very successful one.

URGENT: We desperately need jars for our jar stall. Clean jars without the label and items to go in them please. Suggestions: Lollies, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Bottles can be left at Mrs. Gibson’s office. If you don’t have a jar, just send in the items and we will put them in jars for you.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the teachers run stalls and activities. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know.

The Student Council are once again running the Lob-A-Choc stall on the night. This was a huge success last year with everyone lining up to take a turn, if we get enough chocolate bars we will be able to run two stalls to reduce the time standing in line. In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff are always amazing at baking up a storm. Last year we had many families donating baked items which was a much appreciated addition to our stall. Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods is asked to let their child’s classroom teacher know or simply deliver the goods to Mrs Gibson’s office in the morning on the day.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

EVACUATION AND LOCKDOWN DRILLS

Each term we practice the procedures we would need to use in the unlikely event of an incident requiring an Evacuation or Lockdown. Last week we walked through an evacuation drill. During this drill, we must account for all people on campus including visitors. Please understand when we ask you to sign in each time you visit that we do so to ensure your safety should a real incident take place. Thank you to the parents who had signed in which made them easy to check off as being accounted for.

PBL NEWS

Week 9 will see our teachers and students focusing on being RESPECTFUL when entering classrooms. The following are the expectations the teachers will explicitly teacher during the week.

  1. Knock on the door
  2. Wait for the teacher to invite you in
  3. Use a clear voice and use your manners
  4. Close the door gently and quietly when you are finished

Week 10 will focus on being RESPECTFUL when entering other spaces in the school e.g. ipad club, Resource Centre.

NEWS FOR THE KITCHEN GARDEN

Anyone who has volunteered in our kitchen or garden will tell you what an amazing program it is. As we expand our program, it becomes more difficult for the day-to-day jobs to get done. If anyone you know has an interest in gardening and would like to volunteer to weed some garden beds, prune some plants, move some soil, mulch some gardens or help in any way, please contact me so we can chat. There is no requirement for people to make a weekly commitment or even commit to a specified amount of time, even a half hour after school finishes would be very helpful. We appreciate any time that you can spare. If you have family members or friends who don’t have children at our school but would like to help, please get them to contact me as we can arrange to get them a blue card so they can join in the fun.

UNIFORMS

Each term we revisit our school rule about wearing our school uniform with pride. We are having an increasing number of students wearing large bows, affirmation bands and other items of jewellery to school. While these items are fun, they are not part of our school uniform so are not appropriate to wear to school. The only jewellery accepted is any medical alert items, studs or sleepers for pierced ears, and religious/culturally significant items. Hair must also be tied up if it is long enough to reach the uniform collar.

As the cooler weather has started to creep in this term, students have been wearing jumpers to school. School jumpers are available from the uniform shop. If your child does not currently have a school jumper, a navy jumper or jacket will suffice. Patterned or brightly coloured jumpers or jackets are not part of our uniform. Please ensure that all items of clothing, especially jumpers and jackets, are clearly marked with your child’s name. Our lost property basket is full of un-named items. Please help us maintain a high standard of appearance within our school by ensuring your children wear their uniform each day.

Deputy Principal’s News

Under 8’s day was a huge success, Thanks to ALL who were involved. This year we had a special visit from Queensland Ambulance service, as well as volunteers from Southern Cross Care Village, and students from one of our local high schools, Loganlea. Teachers and staff created interesting activities to engage young minds and hands, and it was wonderful to see so many parents and friends enjoying the day with our young ones.

Dear Mr Webster,

I loved your Ambulance because it’s colourful, large, life saving and it has a loud siren. My favourite part of Under 8’s day was going into the ambulance and sitting on the comfortable seat.

From Nevaeh 2W

Awesome Under 8’s Day

When I went to Under 8’s day, my favourite part was me hoping into the Ambulance with Mason.

“Vroooom! Vrooom! Weeeoooo, Weeeooooo!”

We had lots of fun in the truck and we loved the colouring book.

From Troy

When I went to Under 8’s day, I enjoyed making a mask. It was super fun. I made heaps of things like kites, fans and little fake pianos. We also got colouring in books. It was the best day. Oh and we even had an Ambulance come.

From Isabella

I really like the Ambulance because it was fun to look inside. Then I went to make a piano. After making a piano I went to Bollywood dancing. Then I found my buddy and we made a snake and a fan together.

Administering medication at school

If your child requires staff to administer medication to your child at school, please contact the school office in the first instance to discuss your child’s requirements.

Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:

  • has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)
  • is in its original container
  • has an attached pharmacy label.

Office staff will ask you to complete and sign Section 1 of the Administration of medication at school record sheet.

N.B. If your child requires more than one medication, you will need to complete a form for each medication.

Providing medication to the school

Before you provide the school with your child’s medication, check the expiry date to ensure it is in-date and there is enough for the agreed time period. It is also a good idea to take a note of the expiry date so that you can replace the medication before it expires.

Please note, school staff will not administer medication that you can buy over-the-counter at chemists and supermarkets (e.g. paracetamol, eye drops, cough syrup) unless it has been prescribed by your child’s qualified health practitioner. For example, the school would administer paracetamol to a student only if it has been prescribed by their dentist to be taken for a short time after dental treatment.

School staff are bound by these regulations and we hope that all parents will acknowledge and cooperate with these rules.

Curriculum News

Moderation

Last week at our staff meeting, teachers from Prep to Year 6 shared samples of student work. We discussed how well the students performed with their latest English assessment task. Teachers were able to ask their colleagues their opinions on student work to ensure that grades across classes are fair and accurately aligned to the Australian Curriculum. This process is called moderation and at Edens Landing State School we aim to moderate student samples multiple times during units of work. Moderation allows teachers to respond to the needs of students in their class by changing their teaching sequence to cater for individual learning pathways. It is a powerful strategy that promotes consistency and collaboration.

As a school chaplain I often get asked what I do?, so this week I thought that I would share with you all a few quick facts about SU Queensland Chaplains. If you wish to know more I have provided a link to the 2018 SU QLD Snap Shot.

https://www.suqld.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/2018-Chaplaincy-Snapshot-Web.pdf

WHAT DOES A SCHOOL CHAPLAIN DO?

School chaplains provide social, emotional and spiritual support, enhancing a school’s overall wellbeing strategy and contributing to their educational goals.

HOW MUCH TIME DO CHAPLAINS SPEND ON EACH OF THEIR KEY ROLE AREAS?

  • 47% Social, emotional and spiritual support
  • 17% Educational support
  • 14% Role modelling and mentoring
  • 9% Extra-curricular activities
  • 7% Community development
  • 6% Team contributions

WHO DO SCHOOL CHAPLAINS TALK TO?

School chaplaincy services are available to everyone in schools, and students, staff and families all access them. Chaplains complement other school support services by offering support through pastoral conversations, but not counselling or case management.

HOW DO SCHOOL CHAPLAINS HELP STUDENTS?

Top 5 issues students talk to chaplains about:

  • 16% Friendships / peer issues
  • 13% School behaviour
  • 12% Bullying / harassment
  • 8% Family - breakdown / parental separation
  • 6% Mental health

Every year SU Qld chaplains have 153,240 formal conversations and 388,960 informal conversations.

I hope this has helped you to understand a little more about what I do and please feel free to ask me if you have any questions. I am at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, located in Lower B Block.

P&C News

P&C would like to note a few special dates that we would appreciate to be put into your calendar.

We are sure that the night will be a success and the kids will have a great night.

Parents and care-givers are encouraged to attend.

BBQ at Mitre 10, Beenleigh on the 24th June – Volunteers needed. Even if it is only for an hour or two it would greatly appreciated. These BBQ’s are our main revenue raiser so the P&C are able to put on events throughout the year for the kids.

Annual Bush Dance on 27th June. The P&C will be helping with the food on the night and we would like volunteers for the night. As we all have children at the school and more hands make less work. We will have sausage sizzle, Burgers, Cans of Soft drink and water available on the night for purchase. Last year the Bush Dance was a great night and a lot of fun was had by both parents and children.

Let’s all get together and support the P&C and Edens Landing State School.

Regards,
Stephen Henwood
Vice President

Tuckshop News

Another term is nearly over, towards the end of term tuckshop stock will be run down and every effort will be made to ensure your child’s order is filled. Tuckshop will also be closed the last day of term for cleaning, no tuckshop available for either break this day.

NOW AVAILABLE - 150 ml Lite White Milk only $1.00. At the moment we have a White Milk and Cookie Combo for $1.50, not available before school.

Please ensure you are using the green menu for 2018, if you do not have one please ask your child to come and see me and I will give them one.

Money and food sharing is not allowed between students at our school. I have seen children giving others money to purchase food and trying to buy for others. Neither of these situations are acceptable within our school. Please talk to your children about keeping their own money for themselves and not to buy items for others. Sharing food from home and food purchased at the tuckshop can be potentially fatal to some students.

Please be aware of how much food is ordered for your children with regards to how long their eating break is. Leaving hot and cold food and dairy items in bags or lunchboxes for second break is a dangerous practice that could lead to unwanted health problems. Talk to your children about finishing these items during the first break and not leaving them to consume for second break.

ORDERING PROCESS

We have an online ordering system called Flexischools.

THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING.

Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled, and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the website below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. 2 bags are also needed for one hot item and one cold item ie lasagne and milk, this needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag. If you are just writing your child’s order on a piece of paper and using a snap lock bag, please ensure you are including money for the bags.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be taped in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop order. Don’t forget to include money for the bags please.

Any problems or concerns please contact me
