Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

Can you believe that we are over half way through Term 2? The only thing that is reminding me of that is the chilly mornings and the warm afternoons lol.

Staffing Update

It gives me great pleasure to announce that our wonderful Mrs Cheryl Gibson has been permanently appointed as Deputy Principal to ELSS. I know many of you probably thought that was the case as Cheryl has been here for over five years but finally the appointment has come to permanency. I am very excited about the future of ELSS with such a wonderful caring woman helping drive the ship.

Year 5 camp

Next week our Year 5 are off to camp. I know they are going to have a fantastic time.

A big thankyou to the staff attending. I know it is certainly a labour of love and that you are giving up time with your family.

Under 8’s day

Don’t forget that our Under 8’s day is taking place next Wednesday from 9-11. This is for all our junior school students and their families.

Hope to see you all there.

World Environment Day Poster Competition

Congratulations goes to Hudson from 1W as he was one of the winners in Logan City Council's 'World Environment Day' Poster Competition. He created a poster late last year as part of the school unit. There was an official presentation last Sunday at Griffith University as part of the annual LEAF event. (Logan Eco Action Festival) Acting Logan Mayor Cherie Daley presented the award to Hudson.

South Coast School protocols

A reminder that Education Qld operate under a clear set of protocols outlining how we speak and interact with each other. Please remember that we are all here for the same purpose and that your child is at the heart of everything we do with all the staff going above and beyond. It is disappointing that some parents are operating outside the guidelines of respect when speaking with staff. This behaviour will not be tolerated.

Have a wonderful weekend

Warmly

KOKODA CHALLENGE 2018

This weekend sees our Kokoda teams and their leaders participating in the Kokoda Challenge Day. This will take place at Brookfield, with students assembling at ELSS at 5:15am before heading over to the event. This is a huge day for the teams and I am sure you join me in wishing them fine weather and happy hiking for the day.

CONGRATULATIONS MR. HOPKINSON.

Most parents and students know that we have a whole staff full of legends, however one staff member has now been identified as an official Local Legend. Mr. Leo Hopkinson was nominated by a parent of children who have been involved in the Kokoda Challenge for several years; and has won recognition by NOVA 106.9 for being a community member who is out there participating and doing it for our kids and for our community. Leo has worked tirelessly to support students to be the best they can through the Kokoda Challenge Program and through his work within our school. You may have seen Leo on the news a few months ago when he helped carry a Canadian visitor (who is confined to a wheel chair) up Mt Warning so the man could achieve something he had always dreamed of doing. Congratulations Leo, we all agree you are a legend!

PBL NEWS

I am sure that any parents who have attended the last 2 assemblies on Friday morning have been touched by the students and staff of our school who helped us understand and celebrate differences which make us all unique. While everyone is different in some way, some of us are more obviously different than others and as a result can be misunderstood by those around us. Over the past 2 weeks, Teachers have been focusing on helping all students understand that while others may look, sound or act differently to us, everyone deserves to be appreciated.

Here are some of the links you can use to have further conversations with your children about this topic.

BUSH DANCE 2018!

Please remember that Wednesday the 27th June is the date for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance, we have the Ran Tan Bush Band coming back to perform and there will be entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Entry will be a gold coin donation as was the case last year.

A huge THANK YOU to the very generous families who have already started to send in donations. Your support will ensure the night will be a very successful one.

URGENT: We desperately need jars for our jar stall. Clean jars without the label and items to go in them please. Suggestions: Lollies, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Bottles can be left at Mrs. Gibson’s office. If you don’t have a jar, just send in the items and we will put them in jars for you.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the teachers run stalls and activities. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know.

The Student Council are once again running the Lob-A-Choc stall on the night. This was a huge success last year with everyone lining up to take a turn, if we get enough chocolate bars we will be able to run two stalls to reduce the time standing in line. In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

For those who did not attend last year, this is how the ‘Lob a Choc’ works. It involves setting up blocks of chocolate (a variety of big and small) randomly on a wire grid. Customers stand behind a line and throw coins, trying to land them on the chocolate blocks. If they are successful, the chocolate is theirs. Under some blocks of chocolate there will be a ‘golden ticket’ which offers the winner a bonus prize. All funds raised through this stall will go directly to our kitchen garden program.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff are always amazing at baking up a storm. Last year we had many families donating baked items which was a much appreciated addition to our stall. Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods is asked to let their child’s classroom teacher know or simply deliver the goods to Mrs Gibson’s office in the morning on the day.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

NEWS FOR THE KITCHEN GARDEN

You may have already seen our cute little chicken coop which Chef assembled last week. We are currently in the process of doing the paperwork required to get our first batch of chickens. This is a very exciting time in our garden project. Our next project will be looking at getting a productive bee hive. If anyone has contact with local bee keepers or has a hive we could use, please contact the school.

Under 8’s Day June 6th

Parents, grandparents, family friends are invited to join us for one my favourite days in the school calendar – Under 8’s day, next Wednesday morning, 6th June from 9 – 11am on the Junior oval.

The Prep – Yr2 and Specialist teachers have organised a range of interactive activities, along with community members from our local high school and retirement village, for our students based on this year’s theme is “Children exploring language and culture”.

Children will be able to make Japanese windsocks, indigenous Australian boomerangs, make Chinese ‘fortune cookies’, do some Bollywood dancing, or hip hop; as well as some favourites – ten pin bowling, playdough, reading, obstacle course and Bee bots (robotics) and LOTS more!

There will be coffee/ tea and cake available for purchase with funds going towards our student council.

Early Years Count

Tactile learning with playdough

Playing with playdough can help children investigate mathematical ideas, compare, measure and count, while developing the small muscles in their hands.

As children twist, knead, pull and work with the dough, they are exploring ways to create three dimensional objects and communicate mathematical ideas, while using their bodies to foster physical development.

As children manipulate play dough to create three dimensional objects, they are learning about texture, shape, size, pattern and design. If they are playing in a group or with another person, they will also need to use mathematical terms and language skills to communicate ideas.

AEDC data collection in Prep

The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is an Australian Government Initiative. It is a national census of early childhood development, with a data collection taking place every three years. The document gives more information about how AEDC data is collected on individual children around Australia who are in their first year of full-time school. Results are reported at the local community, community, state–territory and national level to help create a snapshot of early childhood development.

Children do not need to do anything to be included in the census and will attend class as usual. During the census, teachers record information (including children’s names and dates of birth) based on their knowledge and observations of each child in their class. The questions to be used by the AEDC in the upcoming collection are available at:

http://www.aedc.gov.au/instrument

Once all schools participating in the AEDC have provided their information, and the AEDC is completed, some of the data collected is compiled and made available publicly as de-identified data, i.e., data that does not include any children’s names, ages, addresses or schools.

To assist teachers in completing the census correctly, we will be sending home a form with a series of questions, most of which are on your child’s enrolment form, and therefore is an opportunity to make sure the information is correct.

We thank you in advance in assisting us in collecting this valuable data.

Bringing stories to life in Prep

This term students in prep have been learning how to retell familiar stories. They have been acting out stories in lots of different ways to bring them to life. Students have been creating storyboards, making character puppets and retelling stories to their peers, and using Beebots to follow story maps. Here we have students in Prep H constructing an obstacle course to show how the story of “We’re going on a bear hunt” can be retold. The students had to choose items for the course that represented all the events in the story. They chose a big, blue mat for the river, a brown rope for the squishy mud and a round climbing frame for the cave. Students then had to use their writing skills to label each item in the course and retell the story as they moved through each event. Thankfully they didn’t end up finding any bears!

Building resilience in children

(From the Beyond Blue Website.)

Resilience … it’s a familiar word, isn’t it? But what does it really mean?

When we talk about resilience, we’re talking about a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs, and bounce back from the challenges they experience during childhood – for example moving home, changing schools, studying for an exam or dealing with the death of a loved one. Building resilience helps children not only to deal with current difficulties that are a part of everyday life, but also to develop the basic skills and habits that will help them deal with challenges later in life, during adolescence and adulthood.

Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events. Stress is a risk factor for mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, if the level of stress is severe or ongoing.

So where does resilience come from?

Resilience is shaped partly by the individual characteristics we are born with (our genes, temperament and personality) and partly by the environment we grow up in — our family, community and the broader society. While there are some things we can’t change, such as our biological makeup, there are many things we can change.

One way of explaining the concept of resilience is to imagine a plane encountering turbulence mid-flight. The turbulence, or poor weather, represents adversity. Different planes will respond to poor weather conditions in different ways, in the same way different children respond to the same adversity in different ways.

The ability of the plane to get through the poor weather and reach its destination depends on:

  • the pilot (the child)
  • the co-pilot (the child’s family, friends, teachers and health professionals)
  • the type of plane (the child’s individual characteristics such as age and temperament)
  • the equipment available to the pilot, co-pilots and ground crew
  • the severity and duration of the poor weather.

We can all help children become more resilient and the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask other adults such as carers and grandparents to help. Building children’s resilience is everyone’s business, and it’s never too early or too late to get started. We’ve got some simple things that you can do in your own home.

How can I build resilience in my child?

As a parent, carer, or significant adult, you can help to develop essential skills, habits and attitudes for building resilience at home by helping your child to:

  • build good relationships with others including adults and peers
  • build their independence
  • learn to identify, express and manage their emotions
  • build their confidence by taking on personal challenges

On the website below you can find simple strategies to help to build your child’s resilience in child in different age groups.

P&C News

P&C would like to note a few special dates that we would appreciate to be put into your calendar.

School Disco - we have the school disco on the 15th June. A flyer will go home soon with students with information on times, raffles and prizes. Food will be available on the night to purchase.

We are sure that the night will be a success and the kids will have a great night.

Parents and care-givers are encouraged to attend.

BBQ at Mitre 10, Beenleigh on the 24th June – Volunteers needed. Even if it is only for an hour or two it would greatly appreciated. These BBQ’s are our main revenue raiser so the P&C are able to put on events throughout the year for the kids.

Thirdly the school will be putting on the annual Bush Dance on 27th June. The P&C will be helping with the food on the night and we would like again volunteers for the night. As we all have children at the school and more hands make less work. We will have sausage sizzle, Burgers, Cans of Soft drink and water available on the night for purchase. Last year the Bush Dance was a great night and a lot of fun was had by both parents and children.

Let’s all get together and support the P&C and Edens Landing State School.

Regards,
Stephen Henwood
Vice President
