NAPLAN Next week

Next week our year 3 and 5 students will participate in NAPLAN testing. Students have been well prepared for this by our team of expert teachers and are ready to do their best.

Parents often ask how they can help prepare their children for the tests. The best support parents can give is to ensure their children get a good night’s sleep the night before each test and a good breakfast each morning. Don’t dwell on talking about the test as a big deal, reinforcing that all we expect is that they give it their best effort.

BUSH DANCE IS BACK IN 2018!

Please remember that Wednesday the 27th June is the data for our Annual Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance, we have the Ran Tan Bush Band is coming back to perform and there will be entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. Entry will be a gold coin donation as was the case last year.

Thank you to the very generous families who have already started to send in donations. Your support will ensure the night will be a very successful one.

The Year 5 cohort are running a Lucky Jar stall. They want their stall to be a big hit so are asking for every child in Year 5 to bring at least two jars filled with anything you like. Suggestions: Lollies, coloured popcorn, small cars, hair ties and decorations for girls, marbles, toy animals, vouchers, small toys. Bottles can be left at Mrs. Gibson’s office. If you don’t have a jar, just send in the items and we will put them in jars for you. Anyone else who has items suitable for this stall are welcome to donate.

We are also looking for parents to volunteer on the night to help the teachers run stalls and activities. If you are able to help for half hour or so, please let your child’s teacher know.

The Student Council are once again running the Lob-A-Choc stall on the night. This was a huge success last year with everyone lining up to take a turn, if we get enough chocolate bars we will be able to run two stalls to reduce the time standing in line. In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

For those who did not attend last year, this is how the ‘Lob a Choc’ works. It involves setting up blocks of chocolate (a variety of big and small) randomly on a wire grid. Customers stand behind a line and throw coins, trying to land them on the chocolate blocks. If they are successful, the chocolate is theirs. Under some blocks of chocolate there will be a ‘golden ticket’ which offers the winner a bonus prize. All funds raised through this stall will go directly to our kitchen garden program.

In order for this stall to be successful, we need a range of chocolate blocks (big or small). If every family donates one block of chocolate we will have a fantastic stall on the night. Please leave all donations at Mrs. Gibson’s office.

The Kitchen Garden crew will once again be offering cakes and coffee/tea on the night. The teachers and other staff are always amazing at baking up a storm. Last year we had many families donating baked items which was a much appreciated addition to our stall. Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods is asked to let their child’s classroom teacher know or simply deliver the goods to Mrs Gibson’s office in the morning on the day.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our families enjoying the Bush Dance and joining in the fun.

Deputy Principal’s News

Today we had our first Mother’s and special friend’s celebration day, and I was overwhelmed by the fantastic response from our community. The day started with a special assembly with performances from the choir, preps, year 1 and a number of students throughout the school. After a while in classrooms and activities the visitors came along to a scrumptious morning tea, where we able to meet and greet and catch up with some of our families.

I then went for a walk with some year 6 students to the retirement village, where the children gave out some handmade cards to some of the residents. It was truly wonderful to see the children be so comfortable talking and listening to the elder generation. Hopefully we will see more of these members of our community.

I would like to thank all the staff and community who made this such a special day. I am certainly looking forward to Under 8’s day on the 6th June.

Curriculum News

STEM at Edens Landing

This term our year 6 students are working in collaboration with the University of Queensland on two exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) projects. 6C and 6H are working on a sustainability project where they are designing components for an Eco Village such as aquaponics units and recycling bins. 6T and 6B are working on a biodiversity project where they are collecting data on a species native to Edens Landing and counting over a period of time, how many of the animal they see in the school grounds. Collecting the data will allow them to come up with ideas of how to encourage more of their chosen animal to visit our school. Below is a picture of students in 6T using the Atlas of Living Australia website. This website allows you to search what animals live in your suburb and how many of that species have been spotted. The presenters from the university asked students “Do you think you will find more animals living in the suburbs or in the bush?”. The students were shocked with the results they found when using the Atlas website to do some research. Do you know what the most common animal is in Edens Landing? Here a hint, its black, can open lunch boxes and will let you know with its loud caw that’s its living in your backyard.

Chappy News

Just a quick reminder that the Chappy’s Parent Afternoon Teas are on the 10th of May and 14th of June this term. Everyone is welcome to join us from 1:45pm until 2:50pm in my room lower B-block.

This month we also have Chappy Week which is from May 20th until May 26th as part of the celebrations for the week we are having a fundraiser at Holmview McDonalds where 10% of all sales between 5pm and 7pm towards our local chaplaincy committee. It is an easy fundraiser as you just have to purchase something. You could even have a night off cooking. These funds go towards keeping me at the school for the two days a week.

This week I have added an article on Building children’s resilience I have been sitting in on the Healthy Mindsets Resilience program on Tuesday afternoons at OSHC and therefore thought some parents might want to know a little more about resilience and how you can help to build it.

Building resilience in children

(From the Beyond Blue Website.)

Resilience … it’s a familiar word, isn’t it? But what does it really mean?

When we talk about resilience, we’re talking about a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs, and bounce back from the challenges they experience during childhood – for example moving home, changing schools, studying for an exam or dealing with the death of a loved one. Building resilience helps children not only to deal with current difficulties that are a part of everyday life, but also to develop the basic skills and habits that will help them deal with challenges later in life, during adolescence and adulthood.

Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common response to difficult events. Stress is a risk factor for mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, if the level of stress is severe or ongoing.

So where does resilience come from?

Resilience is shaped partly by the individual characteristics we are born with (our genes, temperament and personality) and partly by the environment we grow up in — our family, community and the broader society. While there are some things we can’t change, such as our biological makeup, there are many things we can change.

One way of explaining the concept of resilience is to imagine a plane encountering turbulence mid-flight. The turbulence, or poor weather, represents adversity. Different planes will respond to poor weather conditions in different ways, in the same way different children respond to the same adversity in different ways.

The ability of the plane to get through the poor weather and reach its destination depends on:

  • he pilot (the child)
  • the co-pilot (the child’s family, friends, teachers and health professionals)
  • the type of plane (the child’s individual characteristics such as age and temperament)
  • the equipment available to the pilot, co-pilots and ground crew
  • the severity and duration of the poor weather.

We can all help children become more resilient and the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask other adults such as carers and grandparents to help. Building children’s resilience is everyone’s business, and it’s never too early or too late to get started. We’ve got some simple things that you can do in your own home.

How can I build resilience in my child?

As a parent, carer, or significant adult, you can help to develop essential skills, habits and attitudes for building resilience at home by helping your child to:

  • build good relationships with others including adults and peers
  • build their independence
  • learn to identify, express and manage their emotions
  • build their confidence by taking on personal challenges

On the website below you can find simple strategies to help to build your child’s resilience in child in different age groups.
