Principal’s News

Good afternoon Edens Landing Community

It is hard to believe that next week rounds out Term 1 of a very eventful year. It just seems like yesterday that we were welcoming our new Preppies. Now they are capable and confidents students.

Japanese@ Edens Landing State School

The implementation of Japanese across the school is well underway and being enjoyed by our early years students who are engaging for the first time. Many parents are commenting on how exciting it is to hear their children talk to them in Japanese.

Parents are also voicing their excitement at the prospect of having their children able to go to Japan when the time comes. One family who recently enrolled, spoke about having heard about our students visiting Japan and how they were very keen to be part of this program next year when their child will be old enough to go to Japan.

Last week I hosted a group of Japanese visitors who were shopping for a school to visit this year. They were thrilled with Prep H’s rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in Japanese. They were very impressed by our program and the facilities and opportunities we can offer their children.

Edens Landing Little Learners Playgroup Open Day

When: Wednesday 18 April, 2018
Where: ELSS Multi Purpose Hall
Time: 9am – 11am

Do you have a child aged between 3 and 5 years who will be an Edens Landing State School student in the next few years? Would you like to become involved in the school community, meet other parents and students and help your child become prepared for their learning adventures at Edens Landing State School? Our open day is the perfect opportunity to come along and take a peek at our Edens Landing Little Learners Playgroup, which will operate weekly during school terms.

Our Edens Landing Little Learners Playgroup incorporates a range of supported activities for the development of social, fine and gross motor skills for pre prep aged children. We include the Koala Joeys interactive oral language program as part of our weekly program which promotes opportunities for parents to develop an understanding of early literacy and numeracy skills and the importance of play for learning in the early years. Our format encourages parent-led interaction with children, facilitated by a qualified early years educator and aims to empower parents as their child’s first teacher.

Enrolment forms and Playgroup Queensland membership will be available at the open day and our program will officially start on Wednesday 2 May. All forms must be completed before starting the program. Edens Landing Little Learners Playgroup is strictly limited to 20 places.

STEM(Science Technology Engineering Maths) Redesigned

We are well underway in establishing our STEM program across ELSS. Our approach is three pronged: (1) building teacher capacity; (2) building student capacity; (3) building strong networks with outside agencies to enhance the delivery of STEM at ELSS.

In 2017 the project was launched with the establishment of facilities to support the introduction of our STEM program. The facilities include a STEM centre, robotics room, re-establishment of the kitchen-garden and upgrades to the kitchen facilities. Initial kits for robotics were also purchased along with flexible furniture to facilitate flexible learning spaces within the STEM Centre.

Part of 2018 roll out is the partnership with the University of Queensland and the Wonders of Science program. This will involve our Year 5 and 6 students in exploring real world problems such as sustainability and conservation.

Say No To Bullying

ELSS participated in our Say-No-To bullying day once again this year. It was wonderful to see the families supporting us by wearing orange. A huge thankyou to the parents who went to the extra effort of creating hand painted T Shirts. Please go to our Facebook page to see photos of our day.

I am currently working with Senior Constable Luke to deliver training session around the prevention of bullying. These sessions will be run for both staff and parents of ELSS as well as the students. I will update you once this has been finalised.

Family Fun Day

This Term’s Family Fun day is being developed around the Commonwealth Games theme and is being coordinated by Mrs. Grant. I look forward to seeing as many parents and families attend as possible. These days have proven to be well supported by our families and have had an impact on our last day of term attendance.

Collection of students during school hours

School is an extremely important time in a child’s learning years, however we are finding that children are being collected during school time for appointments, or just because it is more convenient for parents to do so. We understand that we all lead very busy lives but we encourage you to minimise interrupting your child’s school attendance unless it’s an emergency. It will definitely make your child’s progress at school easier for them.

Student Security

Procedures are in place for the collection of students during school time. You must first report to the front office where you will receive a print-out before collecting your child from the classroom.

Please be aware that if the ladies in the office do not know you on sight, you will be asked for identification. They will then check the OneSchool student data base to ensure that you are authorised to collect this child, prior to a print-out being generated. Please allow time for this security measure to take place.

Warmly

Deputy Principal’s News

What a busy and productive term 1 we have had. The students have been working hard to achieve their personal goals in learning, and their teachers are already preparing for the term ahead. Next term will see the Year 5 students heading off to camp and NAPLAN will once again come around for our Year 3 & 5 students.

Student Council Fundraiser

2018 has seen the election of a very keen group of Student Council representatives. They are organised and hoping to raise significant funds to help with school projects and community support projects. The first fundraiser for the year is an Easter Raffle. Staff members and Edens Landing families have very generously donated chocolates and Easter Eggs for prizes. We currently have 17 prizes to give to some very lucky winners.

Raffle tickets cost $1 per ticket, 6 tickets for $5 and 15 tickets for $10. You can purchase tickets from Ms. Alterator and Student Council Members, outside the tuck-shop at 8:30am on Wednesday and Friday mornings or in the Old Hall at second breaks. Tickets will also be available at our Cross Country Event, on the 30th of March.

The raffle will be drawn on the afternoon of the 28th March. Winners will be notified and prizes will be ready for collection on the last 2 days of term.

Our student council are also running a raffle for a wheel barrow full of gardening items which was very generously donated by Loganholme Mitre 10. These tickets will be for sale at parade and cross country week 10 and family fun day. The money raised for both raffles will go towards our Kokoda Challenge program.

Please support our student council as they raise money towards a set of team shirts for our Kokoda Challenge teams. These shirts will showcase our school during training and the challenge

YEAR 5 Camp 2018

Our Year 5 camp will take place next term. This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a short stay away from home, and to build strong leadership skills. Camp is designed for encouraging personal growth and building resilience in all students. The camp also covers a large part of the Year 5 curriculum, so we encourage all year 5 students to attend. If you require a payment plan for camp, please contact the school so arrangements can be made.

Year 6 Camp

Our Year 6 cohort returned from Camp full of excitement and appreciation for their amazing teachers. It was certainly a different group of children (and teachers) returning than the buzz on the buses leaving on Monday morning. They were all very tired and ready for a good night sleep. I am sure the parents had their work cut out cleaning the mountain of wet and muddy clothes. Please take the time to thank the teachers who made the event both away and at school such a success.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our PBL committee meet regularly to discuss the data collected about student behaviour across the school. This data is used to decide which lesson we need to teach in the following weeks. Next week teachers will be explicitly focusing on the way we communicate with each other using school appropriate language. It would be great if parents could also speak to their children about the language which is considered socially acceptable at school.

Please enjoy the holiday break, and I look forward to seeing everyone back safe and sound in term 2.

Deputy Principal’s News

Come and join us as we wrap up Term 1 with Family Fun Day next Thursday 29 March! To add a little Commonwealth spirit our theme this fun day is the Commonwealth Games! Our day is filled with activities that are novelty versions of some of what we will see on the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games in less than 2 weeks.

The students will be split into Junior and Senior groups and rotate through activities throughout the day. Our Juniors will start with a hat parade and a short concert at 9am in the Multi-Purpose Hall followed by a disco. All Prep – Yr 2 students are invited to wear a hat, Easter themed or otherwise and join in the fun. While Senior students will head to the oval for the games.

Our P&C will be cooking a BBQ and are taking pre-orders now for delicious lunch options, why not join your students for a picnic lunch at 11am.

After lunch Junior students will head to the oval for games, while Senior students rotate through a variety of other great S.T.E.M based activities and games.

As always parents and siblings are welcome to join us on our Family Fun Day and we hope to see many of our community sharing the day with us! To add to the spirit of the day, we’ve declared it free dress day so come dressed in green and gold and get ready for the games!

Innovative Maths in Year 3

Students in 3H have this week been learning about measurement. They used a variety of non-standard units to discuss and compare the length of objects. Using concrete materials to learn Maths helps students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts. It also allows students to problem solve and discuss their thinking with their classmates which is a great strategy for consolidating their ideas. Next time you need something measured at home, ask your child what would be a good non-standard item to measure with. It will prompt an interesting discussion when you head out to Bunnings and try to buy a length of hose that is 245 playing cards long! Thank you 3H for sharing your innovative learning.

Get involved in the School Banking program.

Edens Landing State School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2018 are:

  • Twister Power Handball
  • Secret Scratch Pad
  • Sparkle Glitter Pens
  • Glow Light
  • Mighty Boom Handball
  • Heat Reactor Pencils
  • Slushie Maker Cup
  • Zoom Flying Disc

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

  1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
  2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAY. Each week you need to hand in your bank book to your teacher where it will be brought down to the banking ladies.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below:
